The Flame in the Wind' is a suspense drama set in northwest China 30 years ago. It follows three high school students who witness a murder in an abandoned mine and become entangled in the case for a decade. The story involves two police officers, three childhood friends, and four lives, with themes of fate reversal and survival.
The host finds 'Old Chu' compelling because of the character's restrained portrayal, which reflects the depth and subtlety of real-life police officers. Actor Wang Jingchun's performance, combined with the character's old tea mug, leather jacket, and motorcycle, creates an authentic atmosphere. The character's calm demeanor and the show's overall restraint in storytelling highlight the skills of the actors, directors, and writers.
The production team faced extreme weather conditions, including temperatures as low as -25°C, which required creative solutions like eating ice pops to prevent visible breath in scenes. Additionally, filming in a relocated town required meticulous set design to restore the original look of the buildings. The team also had to manage complex transitions between three timelines, ensuring smooth narrative flow and maintaining suspense.
The show captures the dry and cold climate of northwest China, contrasting it with the tropical monsoon climate of Taiwan, where the director grew up. The story's setting in a small mining town reflects the region's unique culture and the resilience of its people. The use of local dialects and detailed set designs, such as an old cinema, further enhances the authenticity of the northwest Chinese environment.
The show explores themes of fate, survival, and the struggle to move on from past traumas. It delves into the emotional and psychological burdens carried by its characters, including unresolved cases, personal relationships, and the desire to escape small-town life. The narrative also highlights the tension between past and present, as characters grapple with their histories and seek redemption or closure.
