It's time for epo de five hundred hundred and eighty two of the clockwise podcast from relay recorded wednesday, november twenty seven, two thousand to twenty four clockwise for people, for tech topics, thirty minutes.

Welcome back to clockwise, the tech podcast that will be ready to come out to even in thirty minutes based IT. In everything, I am one of your host, mike sergeant, and I am joined across the internet by my good power, my dear friend, one, and only then the man more and how you do that.

Hey, that's me. Um i'm doing well. Ve it's so good to be here on our prethident here in the U S. show. Um so we will be put together our thanksgiving meal and we will be passing IT around the table as we go.

All right, I will start by introducing one of our lovely guests as I put sub crane very sauce on my place, I guess, to my left partner, eligibility and host of absolutely crushed its M, B bishoff. Welcome back to the show. M, B.

so good to be here. I brought .

the .

pumpkin pie. I be right back. I am. Get together some sweet potato, Carol. And passing that over to my left, where IT is the one and only writer, photographer, ingredient card publisher on the origin coast. Gene mcDonald, to welcome back gene.

i'm so glad to be here. I love these three holiday shows and please do not touch my p campi.

Don't think the last we have so many pies.

lots of pies are today while we gobble those down. Oh, gob, gob, I will kick things off my question for you. Um what tech do you use with family and or friends around the holiday season? M.

I try to use as little tech when i'm visiting friends and family as possible because I think that often pulls me away from the thing that I want to do, which is be having conversations and playing board games and watching movies. But I do bring a few things. I bring a kindle for, uh, those moments when I want to a take a break and and read something, my phone, of course, and then if I want to do a flash or demo, i'll bring the vision pro with me and everyone likes to likes to try that out for the first time so that's fun.

Yeah I also use a fairly limited amount of tech. Um I think about this. I actually have like a standard packing list that I used for most my travels of course do and yeah course and and IT IT scales right depending on where i'm going on what i'm doing. Um usually my problem for the holidays, if I intergalactic ef of chip like for thanksgiving words a couple days and not expecting you have to do any work, i'll bring my ipad pro and that's the main thing um if I don't think that you do any writing, I won't even bring like keyboard all store my case you magnetic cover and go with that um and then you know obviously have got my phone, i've got my apple watch. I've charges for all those things and I usually bring any reader of some kind like my a cobo or something like that um but yeah I trying to think I beyond that not much my kid now has their own their own coin code ipad which say and I will hand me down ipad that they can watch videos on um but that's about yet I mean another and that yeah i'd like to uh unplug E A little bit on these vacations gene about you I got .

more focus on like tech we use in a group. The first thing I couldn't help IT was find my friends because when everybody is together, but not all in the same room, and it's like we need to go to place or where is so and so are they on their way that you home my whole immediate family know with news and a few um we we are all on fine friends.

We share our locations with each other so um that's helpful um another cool thing that we have in the family and it's kind of old now, but IT still does. What IT needs to do is to think called the party rock er which is a portable Carry OK machine and IT actually has like rolling like a handle and whelps like luggage so that you can roll IT over to somebody's house and we even took him on a plane one time. And IT has flashing lights and a speaker to play music.

It's not like IT doesn't show lyrics or anything like that, so you can only sing the songs you actually know or make up stuff too. But it's super fun. So I recommend .

that that's awesome. Yeah so the text used with family I will launch on apple T V jacket box games um which of course ends up being a fun time with folks now that i'm far away from family I just got and it's funny I believe that was just last week that I said I was tech that had disappointed me yeah however, what i'm planning on using this holiday season is belkin little stand that uses duck kit to be able to do face time from the apple T. V.

And my fox, a show big on the screen, and they can kind of follow us around as well. And and something that I just uses recently for the first time is the apple music sort of kao ke feature. We have a project such a huge space on the wall, and people were loving IT oneself. They came over and we're able to see kind of big on the screen, them singing and dancing along the stuff. And so that was another fun thing to get to use.

And then i'm also going to point out um something like role twenty um which is a great thing that I ve used with friends, not just on the holiday season but other parts of the year, which is not just for something like table top playing game like dungeons and dragons, but um front of the show. And I also uses IT for board games because you can just put a board on a screen and help people move around. So that's another option and opportunity. Thank you all for your answers on that. Let us go to our next topic, which comes from mb.

Speaking of packing list, next week i'm going to be attending a rally outside the supreme court for the landmark united states versus remedie case about trans rights. It's really important. It's going to be a day trip and i'm going to be on a bus ride starting at four thirty A M.

So I have like a five something hour bus ride to dc, no access to a room, all m there, no access to consistent power. What tech should I bring? What tech would you bring on a day like that?

The most good thing, obvious ly in that case, is power, right? You need to be able to get power if for any devices, probably especially your phone, i'm guessing in a case like that, not only but you want like access camera and video and stuff like that, but you also probably need a way to stay in touch with people. And i'm sure there are A A lot of cases which you may want to like share stuff. So you batteries, external batteries, ies are great. I really I have of those anchor mag matter's that just slabbed onto the back of the phone.

I find that incredibly convenient um uh ways to recharge from like uh you know uh a small power bank with a you plugs or treat or cables for all your various gear is also really important um if you're if you want to like a bus or something for hours, uh airports probably yeah uh you know I think those are kind of critical for me whenever I am traveling, especially on some point or transit and if you're trying to get some sleep maybe on the way down, you maybe some White noise or music or something like that will help you um and then sort of beyond that again. I mean, I think IT comes down to what kind of things you want to do along the way. Like for the trip part, like maybe you downloads and videos that can be handy as well.

So you don't like you run out your battery doing streaming or things like that if you can prop stuff ahead of time. I always like to do that. What I am doing, plain trips because a good news, most streaming services now let you download video, which is really nice, but they are vary in how good they are about IT. So pod gas to you know things to listen to whatever on your transit are important. Um yeah I think those the top ones that that I would suggest to gene anything else ad you .

know charges the charges like I would take more than one if you you know have one and have more than one and also you know i'm thinking about you walking around and Carrying everything you have. So but still to minimize on when power use like a book. I know it's not a high tech, is a tech IT was a tech with a signal.

How dare you I know a book or magazine maybe something like you can give away or just leave behind like an you know if you don't want to Carry IT for the whole day um but haven't on the bus and one of my and get low tech um but I have this little problem of therapy. Rolen are like tiny little tubes and they don't weak. I take on planes and you just never know when you're gonna need to like adjust the aroma, let's say when you're stuck on a thing so anything maybe even it's just like some kind of um you know moisture telling thing that has as a accent because i'm kind of sensitive to to sense and I so anyway, that's my recommendation. I think then hit all the high tech ones I would recommend.

I agree with both of them on stuff to bring, particularly for me having some sort of noise cancellation on bus would be great if you have IT a cable that he has multiple ends on IT, even if all the same end, you could end up being the hero that helps some other people get to charge their device.

And if if somebody is you know running very low and they there looking a little frantick and need some juice, you being able to come along and give them and you know the group a little top up would be great. Since it's next week, you can very much take advantage of black friday and cyber monday deals, particularly with anchor. There are quite a few options there that you might pick up right before you go. What what are you planning on bringing for sure? And b.

yeah, that was, that was very hopeful. Give me some good new ideas. A few other things that I have on my list that didn't come up already were um a good supply of masks when I bring some black k and and k and ninety five um also like to hand out other people if they want them and some since it's going to be cold, likely some heat tech that I like the unicode heat tech line to to stay warm. So there are some some other .

Our things to finally for their support of this show. And really, all right, we are back from the break and that means it's time for them to kick things off.

Take IT away, all right, the black is the right. This is upon us. Uh deals deals be besides by deals.

Um i'm curous now you know as we hit the shopping season in the holiday shopping season that comes upon IT, are there any tech products that you are personally looking for deals on, either for yourself you treat yourself in the holiday season or for others in your life? Or have you entirely asked the deal mentality and just buy things when you need them and don't get swept up in the driver of the deal? Gene lets.

I quitted my amazon prime subscription this year early in them, like fall. I'd decided when I was coming up for renewal, and I thought one hundred and forty or whatever dollars, that is too money for where I live. Now we don't get anything overnight.

We don't get anything hardly on two days. And so you know I just and also I really went for books. I've always been buying them at the bookstore. You know at some point I decided that was important. Um but another thing that I do to is to the deal mentality, which is so you know so enticing, is I started filtering my email.

There are certain companies I like to buy from, but if I look at their deals which come out like every week or so, I end up buying probably more than I need. They always have a sale. You know who you are.

If it's always on sale, it's never on .

sale actually. And you know I do like they will get me they say forty percent off and free shipping, you know no minimum. I'm like, oh yeah, I should probably pick up a few things while they're doing this and then I get things that I probably could have lived without.

So anyway, I felt to a mall into, I made a little folder and my apple mail called retail. And now when I think, oh, I need to get another, you know, t shirt from Lancer and mine is wearing out, I just go in there and see if lanson is running a deal. And the usually .

so that .

keeps me from what they want me to do, which is you know just instant gratification um so I recommend that black friday is like, gosh, it's the up it's like more than instinct gratification. It's like gratification anticipation yeah for weeks and I have found myself getting sucked into IT, but I I am resisting this year um .

I tend to resist most of IT because impulsive there of the rest of the year. So i've already purchased the things that I need slash things that I don't particularly mean but definitely want um and so when black friday comes around, it's like um but um given that I moved to a much Better place, I have taken advantage of some black friday deals on like waterproof stuff but that's not tech the tech thing that I actually just posted about yesterday that no one on the internet is being hell about because they're all trying to convince me that I should get IT is A A A three printer um i've been watching the bamboo black friday deals and they're not that great even but I have wanted three printer for a long time but I don't really need one, but I want one, but I kindly need one, but I don't really need one. But I convinced yet that I do but I don't, but I want to.

These black friday deals are really just whispering in my ears like cream, a warm time. And we don't know they're going to win, but they might see. Mb, what about you?

Yeah, I am also not great at thing up on the deals. And like gene, I have too many emails from all these companies always coming in and I should fill to with them out. That's a great idea. But I usually use this period is like day after thanksgiving sort of that that weekend to do some of my shopping for loved one.

So i'll look around at um the the companies and brands that they like and see if there are things on sale and buy some gifts and also like to update my own little list of things that i'm that i'm hoping to receive over the holidays because i've been told by many i'm like a very hard person to buy for. So I like to have a little list when people ask. My birthday day is also over in the end of december so um IT helps to have something and I used gift ster for that now, which I used to use amazon wish lists until amazon completely ruined that product um as they do many things. So gift ster has been has been an upgrade in the last year or two.

I think I many of you the deal thing is hiring. I do keep an eye on the wire tor deal page just in case or something. I I you know have been thinking, oh, you know i'll get we got on sale.

Um I don't find there's no lot in the black friday sales that I immediately compelled to buy. And usually it's one of those things where if I take a step back, I can do though I do I really need this and I usually need to talk myself out of things. Um there's himself that I was good to pick up on sale that you can you know never have too much of uh, storage is a good one always like a good extra hard drive that's great.

Um there are some really good honestly, they used to be there were no good deals on apple products these days. There are actually lots of good deals on apple products, but they do seem to be here round even, which is kind of wild um so in that case, I also don't feel like, oh, I need to buy now. It'll never be on sale again. Um I have four years used camel, camel, camel which tracks Prices on amazon um which I find very handy for sort of getting an idea at least like oh, has IT ever been discounted as much before? Like what is the likelihood that will be on sale again? Um other than that, I mean, I do a secret ta gifted change with my family so you know I used I have a wishlist there that I maintain a little bit and use the check other people's wish list so I know what to look for and that can be helpful to you again targeting a specific all this person really wants this thing and i'm going to check and see if it's on sale. But you know I feel like deals for me are now just sort of an entertaining thing where I can look at and be like o sixty percent off you know four hundred mattress covers you like I don't need that.

but it's entertaining .

I guess you know good for for those people occasionally do you like aspirational like you I know Michael was that was talking about three d printer like converting um and like something about that thing and it's like it's still too never mind. I will not pay. I see huge amounts of money for these things.

So i'm glad to hear that mainly, we I think we've escaped the clutches of the deals. Thank you all for your thoughts on that topic. Let's go to gene to rap things up.

This is wonderful. We've had family. We have shopping. We have civil liberties. It's like a good holiday round table. But it's missing one of the obvious topics, cooking recipe management. I was wondering what apps and are you are using, if any, to find recipes or save them and share them.

I love this. I to find recipes i'm just good old fashion google um I will look at the different options that are out there for whatever recipe thinking about making um and then kind of based on sites that I have been to before and have like the recipes pared with what the ratings are for the recipe um I will make a decision on one.

Sometimes I click into IT and go, oh no, they have something odd they've chosen for this or oh, this doesn't have enough spice in IT and changed my mind but when IT comes to recipe management, I am a peppa girl. Y, I love peppa. IT is an act available on the market.

It's available on, I think I bad it's ta. But I am big on having physical manifestations of my recipes in front of me. And the way that I manifest them physical is by printing them out and praga has a great set of tools for properly kind of a lining and displayed and laying out of recipe. And you can use IT on index cards. You can use IT on full size pieces of paper.

How we want to um but yeah there is something about having that recipe in front of me that way that just works for me VS having to unlock my screen or do whatever IT to get to the recipe and scrolling through when I just want to keep my fingers where they're supposed to be, not on the screen or anything like that. So that's the APP that i've used for quite some time and continue to use to this day. M, B, what about you?

I used to be A A rica girl, but I am now um into mella by silsby zy, the crater of reader, really, really beautiful. A recipe manager also thinks um it's just sort of super simple uh and you can subscribe to your favorite recipe sites via R S S. In there. I've been most of cooking stuff from and my times cooking lately and Y T cooking, but um always looking for a new sites. I'm interested to hear what you have .

to say down yeah I I think you'd basically just took my answer. I am also in new ordinem cooking person. My wife and I use IT quite a bit and save recipe and send recipe to each other and and use IT, even the store notes and stuff.

I also use meller. That is the other one. What I mean to do for things that don't fit in other places. It's got a really good recipe import feature. And that really is the huge thing is like, oh, I want to grab this recipe and drop IT in some place.

Um I also liked that it's got a very easy um slider for adJusting quantities, which like I only want make half of this recipe and IT is a nice job of adJusting for that IT search able looks great. I haven't like fully committed to IT but because I use new or times cooking for so many things still but it's a handy place for me to know that whenever i'm looking for whole there's a thing I cooked and it's not in the new york times cooking up. Where is IT? It's in there.

Um i've heard a lot of people rave about with uh property and creon ah I haven't really used I had per at one point but I just for something IT just does IT wasn't working for me crew one of things as I got the recipes collection is very aspirational for me. I should put all my recipe together and put IT in one place and then I like that just seems like work so I don't but yeah, that's pretty where I end up. Gene, when you read this up for us.

I used para as well come for years and I was intrigued by mela because of the developer and that makes sense that I would have an r assess component to IT yeah and I might give you another look um also sometimes i've used any list not for so much for recipe management but IT allows you to like import your shopping list and make meal plans and sometimes when I feel like him need to organize myself more than just like what do I feel like eating this moment um i'll use any list for that.

Um but Michael, you gave me a really great Christmas idea. What about the printing from peppa because I am thinking I would be kind of cool and make probably just it's like a burger. I won't be a cookbook of the recipes that I actually made this year.

You know not like the ones I aspired rationally downloaded because how helpful is that but things that I mean, there there's at least ten that I make regularly and that like maybe printing them out into something nice to give to people. I love they might enjoy one or two those song. I look into that.

That is a really cool idea. Also, I just want to say that I did use the new york, uh, cooking recipe for making my first turkey this year. And IT was a hit and I was very excited about i'd never made a turkey before in that recipe rocked.

All right, we have just in a time for a bonus topic. Before we get there though, I want to to remind you all about our clockwise swag, which, of course, stains for stuff we all get and you should get some swag. Um we just launched a new and perhaps a limited time option that just makes the sound work exclusive. IT is our clockwise mug.

Has mike about the mug yet? Know will he? yes. Does he have everything else except the phone case? absolutely.

That's because the clock bag is awesome and you should get IT yourselves. Um if you are going okay, you know it's kind of Price. See, I don't really need a hat. The mug is only eighteen dollars and you can get IT now IT looks so cool and I can't wait to have IT.

Please take a picture of yourself wearing the cloth shirt and had while drinking from .

the well I have on my, yes, that immediately. So head to clockwise that social to see all of the awesome clockwise swag. We have included the perhaps limited debug.

All right, let us head back into our bonus topic. Do you have a favorite animated character? M, B will start with you.

I I love a lot of animal characters that I have affection for but um the one that I guess is my favorite is also maybe the most basic answer possible, making mouse. I just always felt sort of connected to Mickey and I am when I would go to uh, disney world as a kid, I would do the pin trading and i'd always trade for interesting Mickey.

So I have a lot of interesting Mickey and namal pins on my looking at right now, on on my pinboard, on my desk today. I even have a few rare like coach bags from the japanese olympics. So I have Mickey doing different olympic sports. So I have like a kari one and a roller skating one and I get compliments on the mall time. So are making mouse .

a way too many to name all .

of them um a few can and Jerry from stories rebels uh captain rex from uh clone wars uh older vacco from an immediate but probably got its so hard the entire cast of evita the less arbor and uh I don't know I just named in characters now uh but I think uh, I have a special spot in my heart for several of the characters from the disney series cargoes from mid nineties which was hugely influential on me recently one my pal chip other uh gifted my son with a stuffed goliath um and it's become a favorite but he took child I took IT from him. It's in right now he gets to play with IT not me, not daddies toys as he says um but from that show a one of my favorite all time, David sanatory s who is nominally the villain of the show but is a fantastic cally created character voice by JoNathan freak A K commander record from start ric, ah that I was wonderful. And if you have wasted IT you yourself .

to seek IT out, I just I was going by like, what if I had a stuff t animal amarian stuff cartoon figure of and you just reminded me that I used to have a stuff t upper from amateurs til I gave to my naw. But APP is number two, because i'm, and I don't quote from upper very often, my all time, my all time favorite pixar character, which is story, and I had a story, a stuff story, to which I must have given away. But yes, story is the best for me.

IT is there. There are two that are my oldtime favorite flick from a bug's life as a kid, super, super identified with the tinkering outcast figure. And gigi puff from the animated poking on series.

Every little bit of attitude that gigli puff puts forth in every little sound that gigli puff makes that's why gigi puff is my favorite poking on in general but IT is because of that animated character that is so thinking funny. I love jingly buff. Um thank you so much for your answers on that bonus topic.

If you out there would would like to get add three episodes with an extra overtime topic every week, you can become a member of clockwise, just going to relate out of him, slash clockwise, sign up for just seven dollars a month, seventy dollars per year, and you will help support the show in this week's overtime topic, we discuss energy tech and that we've reached the end of this episode clockwise. All that has left us to think our awesome guests. Mb bishop, thank you so much for taking on some time to join us today.

say and keep watching the clock. A couple.
