The 'Dun Dian Taiwan' program, organized by the Chunghwa Telecom Foundation and the Department of Radio and Television at National Chengchi University, encourages university students to step out of their comfort zones during summer and spend 15 days in rural areas. The program focuses on providing hands-on service and documenting local stories, aiming to uncover hidden narratives, offer community services, and preserve local culture through text and imagery.
Initially, Dongyuan Village was not their first choice; it was ranked in the middle of their preferences. However, after being assigned to Dongyuan, they began researching the village and connecting with the community, which led to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the area. Their initial lack of familiarity with the village turned into a meaningful experience as they immersed themselves in the local culture and community life.
Upon arrival, they faced immediate challenges such as difficulty contacting the community's general manager and logistical issues like transporting their motorcycles to the village. Additionally, one of them fell ill, adding to the initial chaos and uncertainty about how to proceed with their planned activities.
They provided various services at the Cultural Health Station, including assisting with health courses, measuring blood pressure, helping with meal distribution, and teaching first aid to children. They also created a 30-page booklet of health-related lesson plans for the station's coordinator, which significantly eased her workload.
Their documentary focused on the life and work of the Cultural Health Station's coordinator, Jia Hui. It was shown to local officials and community leaders, raising awareness about the station's resource shortages. This led to increased support, including the addition of a new staff member and enhanced community activities, significantly improving the station's operations and community engagement.
You Junqi learned to be more adaptable and less insistent on his own ideas, understanding the importance of flexibility and teamwork in overcoming challenges. Zhuo Yisheng developed a deeper sense of observation and confidence in his writing and service contributions, realizing the impact of his work on the community and his personal growth.
They advise future participants to be brave and seize opportunities. They emphasize the importance of stepping out of one's comfort zone, engaging with unfamiliar communities, and fully committing to the experience, as it can lead to significant personal and professional growth.
