WHY IS IT HARDER TO LEAD 1 THAN 100?

Leading ONE might be harder than leading 100. Why is that true?

When leaders are responsible for a small team Of three to five people, there is a group mentality which kicks in. If the leader is a kind and caring person, the team will become like them in many ways and the culture of kindness will begin to flourish. If the leader tends to be rude and tyrannical, the team will also tend to follow suit.

When leaders are responsible for several teams and several levels of teams, there are multiple personalities at play in creating the culture. In other words, it is less a direct reflection of the nature of the leader and more an amalgamation of all of the most dynamic people in leadership.

The larger the organization, the more “tempered” the culture will be - most of the time. The exception would be when the top leader uses policies and operational documentation to manage or manipulate behavior. Rules which don’t serve the vision of the organization more than to satisfy the ego of the leader can be seen as extreme control or even narcissistic tendencies.

When leading ONE PERSON (besides self - SELF IS THE HARDEST) the dynamics change completely. Two people have more discussions, share direct opinions and feelings more readily and confront injustices quickly. Emotions are higher and conflict is deeper when there is no one to balance or break a tie vote.

This is why many partnerships and marriages fail. Co- leadership takes self sacrifice, patience, perseverance, resilience and thick skin.

If you have lead large teams and now are asked to lead a small team or you are venturing out on your own, things like delegation, shared work load, assignments - they are all on you! The spotlight and the curb are both equally yours. You will have to focus more on being the kind of leaders, the kind of person others want to be around.

“Law of magnetism. A leader tends to attract like people to themself.” John Maxwell
