Hey everyone, and welcome back to AI Unraveled. We're going to take another deep dive into AI today because things are moving so fast right now, it's kind of crazy. This show, by the way, is the brainchild of Etienne Newman. He's a senior AI engineer up in Canada. And get this, he's a soccer dad too. Okay, so I think what's really interesting this week is this kind of Shakespearean drama that's playing out between Elon Musk and open AI. Yeah, like some kind of tech rivalry you'd see in a movie. Yeah. So Elon Musk launched this new AI called Grok 3. It uses this massive Colossus GPU cluster. We're talking 200,000 GPUs. Which basically means Grok 3 can just process information ridiculously fast. And that means? It has some pretty impressive capabilities like Wi-Fi.
We're talking advanced reasoning, coding skills that could really give human programmers a run for their money. And it even has multimodal abilities. Okay, hold on. Multimodal. What does that even mean for those of us who aren't, you know, AI engineers? Mm-hmm. Good.
Good point. It means Grok can work with more than just text. Like it understands images, audio, and they're even saying maybe video at some point. It's designed to interact with the world in a much more like dynamic way than just your typical chat bot. So is this like Elon basically saying game on to ChatGPT and Gemini? Yeah, it seems that way, especially when you look at some of the features they're planning, things like voice interaction, gaming tools,
even API access for developers. It's definitely a challenge to open AI, that's for sure. And it sounds like open AI is not just sitting back and watching all this happen.
I heard they're thinking about doing some pretty big things to protect themselves. Like what's the deal with these special voting rights? Oh, yeah, that's interesting. So the Financial Times is reporting that OpenAI is looking at new ways to kind of govern things so that they can prevent any kind of hostile takeover. And they're doing this specifically with Musk in mind. The idea is that these special voting rights would give more control to certain investors and board members. So it all goes back to Musk's history with OpenAI. This is getting juicy.
So you've got these two titans, Musk and OpenAI, kind of going head to head. But then there's this other player that's coming in with a whole different approach, Mistral AI. This is where things get really interesting. So Mistral AI is all about like tailoring AI to specific regions and cultures. They just released this thing called Saba. And what makes it different is that it focuses on languages and dialects that the big players
players you know tend to overlook so we're not talking about another chat bot that's just trying to be everything to everyone right exactly Saba's trained on these data sets from the Middle East and South Asia they even include Arabic and some South Indian languages like Tamil and Malayalam okay I see why this is a big deal now instead of making everybody adapt to like
one standard AI. Saab is the one adapted to the people it's designed to serve. That's a huge difference. For sure. And it opens up so many possibilities for people who haven't had access to like sophisticated AI tools before, especially in their own languages. It's
It's like having an AI that actually gets you like it understands your culture and where you're coming from, not just the words you're saying. Exactly. And think about the impact this could have on things like education, health care, even business in these regions. It's huge. OK, my mind is officially blown and we haven't even gotten to the next topic yet.
But before we do, I want to just quickly remind everyone that AI Unraveled is listener supported. That's right. We rely on your generous donations to keep this show free for everyone to access. And every little bit helps us keep exploring this awesome world of AI. If you want to support us, you can find links to donate in the show notes.
All right. So let's get back to the AI news and talk about a place where AI is starting to make some waves and it's getting a little controversial. I'm talking about the newsroom. Ah, yes. The New York Times. So they've been doing some pretty interesting things lately with their own AI tool built specifically for journalists. Wait, is the New York Times actually using AI to like write their articles now? Yeah. Because that's a pretty big deal. Not quite. No, they're being very careful about how they use it.
The main idea is to kind of like help human journalists not replace them. So more like a high tech research assistant. Exactly. Like think about it as a way to automate some of the more tedious tasks that journalists have to do. Things like research, analyzing data or even summarizing really long reports. That makes sense. It frees up the journalist to do the more like creative stuff. Yeah. And the
And the New York Times has some pretty strict guidelines for how this tool can be used. Like they don't let it write entire articles or create images or anything like that. And it definitely can't make any editorial decisions. It's all about supporting the humans, not taking over. So they're trying to find a balance, right? Between using the power of AI and making sure they keep their journalistic standards high.
But isn't the New York Times also suing OpenAI over copyright issues? They are, yeah. They're claiming that OpenAI trained their AI models on content that the New York Times owns, which brings up all sorts of legal and ethical questions about AI and intellectual property.
It's crazy, right? On one hand, they're using AI in their newsroom, but on the other, they're in court fighting a huge AI company. I know, right? It's a complicated relationship. It'll be interesting to see how this lawsuit turns out and what it means for the future of AI in journalism, that's for sure. But it definitely shows that we need some clear guidelines and rules as this technology gets more and more powerful. Well, talking about powerful, get ready for a rapid fire round of some other AI developments you need to know about.
It seems like every day there's something new. Hit me with it. I'm ready. Okay, so first up, billions, and I mean billions, with a B, are being poured into AI startups right now. It's like an investment explosion. And along with all that investment, we're also seeing a huge rise in open source AI. It's getting smarter and faster all the time, which means that more and more people are going to have access to these powerful tools. And of course, the question everyone's asking is, are we on the verge of seeing...
Artificial General Intelligence.
You know, that idea from sci-fi where machines can actually think like humans? It's the hot topic right now. And while we might not be there yet, the progress is definitely there. And all this progress is fueling another race, the battle for AI chip dominance. It seems like every company out there wants to control the hardware that's going to power this whole revolution. It's like the gold rush of the digital age. Whoever wins this one is going to have a big advantage. And with all this rapid development, there's this growing concern about data privacy.
As AI gets more integrated into our lives, protecting our personal information is more important than ever. Oh, absolutely. We need to be having some serious conversations about data security and ethical guidelines for AI, like right now. Wow. Okay, that was a lot to take in. We've covered so much ground already, but there's still so much more to explore. So let's dive into this fascinating world of personalized AI after a quick break.
You know, it's kind of crazy to think about how much AI is changing things. Like, it really feels like it has the potential to, you know, totally transform our lives. And one of the most exciting areas is this whole thing with personalized AI. Yeah, I feel like personalization is everywhere these days, from like what Netflix recommends you watch to the ads you see online. It seems like every company out there wants to know exactly what you like.
But how does AI take personalization to like the next level? It's all about using AI to create experiences that are truly designed for you based on your data, what you need, even your goals. Like we're not just talking about suggesting movies anymore. It goes way deeper than that. OK, I'm listening. What could this look like in the real world? OK, imagine your health care is totally personalized.
AI could analyze your medical history, your lifestyle, even your genes and create a treatment plan that's like specifically for you. So instead of getting the same treatment as everyone else, you'd have something that's unique just for you. That's pretty amazing. Exactly. It could totally change how we prevent diseases and just be healthier overall.
But it goes way beyond health care. Think about education. AI could create lessons and learning plans that fit your learning style, making it more fun and effective. It's like having a personal AI tutor who knows exactly how you learn best.
Man, I could use that back in school, especially in math. I know, right? We all learn differently, and personalized AI could help everyone reach their full potential. It's not just about convenience. It's about empowering people. So it's not just about making our lives easier. It's about creating a more equal world where everyone can be themselves.
Everyone has the tools they need to succeed. You got it. And the possibilities are endless. Think about personalized financial advice, travel plans that are designed just for you, even dating apps that use AI to find your perfect match. Okay, now you're talking my language. A personalized AI matchmaker. Sign me up.
But seriously, this all sounds great, but doesn't it get a little creepy sometimes? I mean, AI collecting all this data about us, knowing our habits, our likes and dislikes. Yeah, I get it. Privacy and data security are super important when it comes to this stuff. As AI gets smarter, we need to make sure that our information is safe,
and that it's not going to be misused. So it's not just about the tech itself. It's about having the right rules and ethics in place. Exactly. It's got to be a two-pronged approach. We need the tech to keep advancing, but we also need to make sure it's being used responsibly. That makes sense.
This whole conversation about personalized AI is making me think about how much it could change things, for better or worse. I agree. It's both exciting and a little scary to think about. I mean, we're basically watching a technological revolution happen right now, and it's up to all of us to decide how it's going to affect our lives and, you know, the future. You're right. It seems like every time we do one of these...
deep dives into AI, we find something new and complex. That's the best part, right? The future of AI is still being written and we all have a role to play in shaping it. And speaking of shaping the future, you know what's really important? Supporting the voices that are helping us understand all of this, like this podcast right here. Absolutely. AI Unraveled is listener supported, which means we rely on your donations to keep this show free for everyone.
That's right. Every little bit helps us keep exploring this amazing world of AI, bringing you the latest news and asking the tough questions. So if you're enjoying these deep dives, and you can, we'd really appreciate your support. You can find links to donate in the show notes. Okay, so let's switch gears a bit and talk about another area where AI is making some serious waves.
The creative arts. This is where it gets really cool. We're seeing AI being used to make music, write poems, even create incredible works of art. It's really pushing the limits of what we thought was possible with creativity. It's crazy to think that AI can be creative, right? It makes you wonder what creativity even means. Like, can you even
Can a machine really express emotions or capture the human experience through art? Those are the big questions. And there's no easy answer. Some people say that AI art is just a copy of the data it's learned from, like a really good imitation, but not truly original. But then there are people who believe that AI can be a powerful tool for artists, helping them come up with new ideas and be even more creative. It's like having an AI partner working together, pushing each other to create something new and exciting. I like that. An AI muse.
And think about how this could make art more accessible. People who might not have traditional artistic skills could use AI to express themselves. Exactly. It can make art more inclusive so that everyone can participate, no matter their background. That's a really cool idea. But we can't ignore the fact that some people are worried about AI replacing human artists or making their work less valuable.
Yeah, that's a valid concern. It's something we need to talk about. Think about the impact of AI on the art world and how it's going to affect artists. You're right. As with any new technology, we need to figure out how to use it in a way that benefits everyone, both the artists and society as a whole. It's all about finding the right balance. We want AI to help artists be more creative, not replace them altogether. This whole conversation about AI and art is really making me think,
There's so much potential, but also a lot of uncertainty. Definitely. It's both exciting and a little scary, just like everything else with AI. It's wild how fast it's all moving. I know, right? But that's what makes it so interesting. We're seeing the start of a brand new era, all powered by AI. And who knows what amazing things are going to happen next? That's the big question, isn't it? What does the future hold for AI? And how can we help shape that future? We'll just have to keep exploring and see where it takes us.
This has been another incredible chapter of AI Unraveled. We've covered so much ground today, from the latest AI developments to the ethical and philosophical questions that they bring up. It's been a wild ride, and I hope our listeners are feeling as inspired and informed as I am. Me too.

It's all about how AI is being used in the creative arts. Yeah, this is where things get really interesting. Like we're seeing AI create music, poetry, even visual art. It's really pushing the boundaries of what we thought was possible in terms of creativity. It is pretty wild to think that AI can be creative. Makes you wonder what creativity actually means, you know. Can a machine really capture human emotion or experience through art? That's a tough question, and I don't think there's an easy answer.
Some people think that AI art is just a reflection of the data it's trained on. Basically, it's just a really good imitation without any real originality. But others believe that AI can be an amazing tool for human artists, helping them explore new ideas and push their own creativity even further. Yeah, like imagine having an AI partner to bounce ideas off of, pushing each other to create something totally new and innovative. I love that. An AI muse.
And think about the potential for accessibility. People who might not have traditional artistic skills could use AI to express themselves in ways they never thought possible. - Absolutely, it could really democratize art and make it more inclusive so that everyone can participate no matter their background. - That's a really cool idea. But we also have to acknowledge the concerns about AI
potentially replacing human artists or making their work seem less valuable. Right. And that's a valid concern. It's something we need to think about carefully, you know, the impact of AI on the art world and how it's going to affect artists. As with any new technology, we need to figure out how to use it in a way that benefits everyone, both the artists and society as a whole. Yeah, it's all about finding that balance where AI enhances human creativity instead of replacing it.
This whole conversation about AI and art just highlights how much potential there is, but also how much uncertainty there is around AI. It's both exciting and a little bit scary. It's a wild ride for sure, but it's also an amazing time to be alive.
