TUDCA (Tauroursodeoxycholic acid) is a hydrophilic bile acid naturally produced in the liver. It is popular for its wide spectrum of health benefits, including liver protection, kidney protection, gut health, glucose metabolism, obesity, weight management, and neurological protection. It is particularly known for its ability to protect the liver from general stress and regenerate damaged liver cells.
TUDCA offers benefits for kidney protection, gallbladder protection, gut health, glucose metabolism, obesity, weight management, and neurological protection. It has shown potential in treating neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, Huntington's, Parkinson's, and ALS. It also aids in detoxification and protects against damaging compounds such as alcohol and drugs.
Research shows that TUDCA can reduce liver enzymes, improve overall liver function, and lower total cholesterol. It is effective in treating liver cirrhosis and chronic liver disease, with studies suggesting it stimulates hepatocyte proliferation and improves biochemical markers.
TUDCA has shown potential in treating neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Huntington's, Parkinson's, and ALS. It may improve insulin sensitivity in the liver and muscle, and it has been linked to better metabolic health and reduced adiposity.
Dosage recommendations vary. A high dosage of 1,750 milligrams per day for four weeks has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and fatty liver disease. A lower dosage of 10 to 13 milligrams per day for three months can improve liver regeneration rates. The typical dosage is 500 milligrams daily, and it is often split into three to four doses throughout the day to maintain homeostatic levels.
Potential side effects of TUDCA include nausea, diarrhea, GI distress, and skin eruptions. These side effects are generally mild and resolve with cessation of the supplement.
People with the APOE4 genetic variant may benefit from using TUDCA, as it has shown potential in improving insulin sensitivity and reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's.
TUDCA is a bile salt which has rapidly gained popularity in the last few years but many people don't know what they're actually taking. In this solocast, Lucas explains exactly what TUDCA is and some of the unique findings.
