Publisher's Summary: In life and in death, Jesus words were powerful and meaningful. Despite the serious effort and increased pain required for Jesus to speak as he hung on the cross, Jesus spoke seven "final words" statements that have much to teach us about Jesus, his Father, and ourselves: "Father, Forgive Them." "Behold Your Son.Behold Your Mother." "My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?" "Today You Will Be with Me in ParadiseI" "Thirst." "It Is Finished." "Into Your Hands I Commit My Spirit." In 24 Hours That Changed the World, Adam Hamilton took us on a Lenten journey through the last day of Jesus' life. Now in this inspiring follow-up book, Hamilton explores these final words as seen and heard through the eyes and ears of those who stood near the cross. Each chapter begins with the biblical account followed by a first-person story as might have been told from the viewpoint of one of the characters at the cross. Then the chapter explores the meaning of Jesus' dying words for our lives today. Following the last statement, a postscript recounts the words Jesus spoke following his resurrection, including what truly were the final words Jesus spoke while walking this earth.
Members Reviews: Worth Reading I came across this book as I was preparing a sermon series on the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. The author wrote the book in preparation for the season of Lent. He devotes a chapter to each of the seven statements recorded by the gospel writers, but the last two statements are covered in one chapter. It is a thought provoking book and definitely a good read for daily devotionals or as a small group study. Each chapter begins with a fictional story from the imagined perspective of a person who witnessed the crucifixion of Jesus. I enjoyed the perspective the author brings to the biblical account. The historical references were some of the greatest assets of the book. I thought the book was worth reading, but nothing earth-shaking. I would recommend it as a small group study, or even for research on a sermon series like I used it. There is a discussion guide available as well for a small group.
Interesting study of Jesus' final words from the cross This is an insightful examination of Jesus' final words from the cross. While in some places Hamilton may read into Jesus' words more than is there, he gives us a good deal to think about. Throughout the book he offers personal insights from a pastoral perspective.
Great series to use around Easter in your class. John Hamilton series are all first rate. We have used several in our Sunday School class and this one was no exception. The book is well written and the DVD is first rate. If you are looking for a series to use in class around Easter, this is for you.
Outstanding Lenten Study Adam Hamilton has written a thoughtful and thought provoking study on Jesus' last words from the cross. Typical of his writing, Hamilton sets his topic in the context of the time, while relating it to our lives in the present. Our pastor is using the book as the basis for his messages during Lent, along with leading several small group studies during the week.
