Members Reviews: Love it! I'm SUPER glad I found this little gem! I've been in camp ministry for about 7 years now, going into my 3rd summer as a program guy. I'm always looking for great ways to visioncast and teach staff. Training is a fun, but high-responsibility part of the job - and the joy of this book is that I can start doing that more effectively before my summer staff even arrive on the grounds. I'm going to be sending my support staff (program assistants, waterfront director, and health officer, and groundskeeper) through this book this season in hopes they can transfer a lot of it into the culture of my camp and furthermore to my counselors. I think having the backbone of your camp staff on the same page is a great way to start. During staff training in June I plan to teach my counselors and co-counselors the important stuff using this resource - and by that point, my support staff will know it and be able to assist in teaching it as well. I love that this book is an overview of the big picture stuff. Badke's other book is excellent as well, but I wouldn't have my staff read it before coming just due to the size (300pgs vs. a little over 100). I definitely don't want to administer a resource that's overwhelming, so this book is much more ideal for that. I may pick and choose certain chapters my staff are required to read and leave other portions optional. But really, this book is wonderful. If you're in charge of training a summer staff, definitely check this out. I wish I knew of this book 2 years ago when I had to lead training my first time and didn't know hardly anything! Last, but certainly not least, I think it's important to mention that Badke always ALWAYS ties it back into the Word of God. He knows his stuff and constantly reminds the reader to keep their focus on the spiritual. In my experience, a staff completely sold out and committed to the cause of Christ is the most effective staff you can have. I'm convinced this book will help you get your staff there help you get your staff there.

Best book available on the subject. Looking for a great training tool for summer camp counselors? I work as director of a small Bible school on the west coast, where we routinely train and send out summer ministry teams from among our students. Each of these teams will spend about 8 weeks of the summer traveling around the Northwest, counseling each week at a different youth camp. In addition to the curriculum that we have developed over the years, we have had the teams read a good book on the subject as well. Ok, we have had them read a book on the subject, although to be honest, we have had trouble finding one that we felt really nailed it, until now! The Christian Camp Leader is the perfect companion for our training program, and packs so much essential material into a very manageable and compact format. The author's heart for kids and for ministry resonates throughout the book, and sets the right tone for the summer. There are sections on heart preparation and ministry perspective, as well as practical sections that equip the cabin leader to effectively lead, and to appropriately handle a wide variety of special situations.
