Good morning, this is SEND7 World News in 7 minutes. I'm Stephen Devincenzi. Today is Monday the 16th of June 2025. Starting in Asia today, Israel and Iran are effectively at war after trading missile fire since Friday.

On Friday, Israel fired missiles and drones at various locations across Iran, primarily hitting nuclear facilities, air defences and military bases. There were also targeted assassinations of many senior Iranians, including the head of the armed forces, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard,

the head of the Aerospace Forces, the head of the Quds Special Forces, a top advisor of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and some nuclear scientists. Iran responded by firing missiles and drones at Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that Israel's primary objectives are to destroy Iran's nuclear capabilities and ballistic missiles capabilities.

and on Friday, he released a message in English targeted at Iranians. Tonight I wish to speak to you, the proud people of Iran. We're in the midst of one of the greatest military operations in history, Operation Rising Lion. The Islamic regime, which has oppressed you for nearly 50 years, threatens to destroy my country, the state of Israel.

The objective of Israel's military operation is to remove this threat, both the nuclear threat and the ballistic missile threat to Israel. And as we achieve our objectives, we're also clearing the path for you to achieve your objective, which is freedom. In the past 24 hours, we've taken out top military commanders, senior nuclear scientists, the Islamic regime's most significant enrichment facility,

and a large portion of its ballistic missile arsenal. More is on the way. Iran's health ministry said yesterday that over 126 people have been killed in Israeli airstrikes. About half of these deaths appear to have come from a missile hitting an apartment building in Tehran. In Israel, at least 14 people have been killed, including four Palestinian-Israeli women from the same family.

Israel's Iron Dome air defence system has shot down most of Iran's missiles and drones, but not all. Israel says that it now has air superiority over Iran and has said that its planes will fly over Iran.

In India, in the city of Ahmedabad, police have said that 279 bodies have been identified at the crash site of the Air India flight, which crashed on Thursday. It is known that out of 242 people on the flight, just one survived. So that means that at least 38 people on the ground have died as well.

The black box has been found and investigations are continuing to try to find the reason for the crash. Africa In Kenya, the police chief of Nairobi's main police station has been arrested over the death of a teacher who was detained for a tweet critical of the Deputy Inspector General of Police,

There have been protests in Nairobi after Albert Ojuang was arrested and then died in police custody. One other policeman and a technician who is accused of disabling the police station's CCTV have also been arrested and five other policemen have been removed from duty.

Egypt has signed a deal with Norwegian energy company Skatec for a 1 gigawatt solar power plant. Egypt is aiming to raise the proportion of its energy production, which is renewable, from about 12% today to 42% by 2030.

In Tunisia, Abir Moussi, the leader of the Free Constitutional Party, has been sentenced to two years in prison for criticising the Electoral Commission. Human rights groups have said that President Kays Saeed has used the judicial system to oppress his political opposition.

Europe. In Italy, France, Portugal and Spain, there were protests against over-tourism yesterday in many cities. Protesters say that high levels of tourism are making it impossible for local people to live their normal lives, especially by raising the cost of housing.

Denmark will require women who turn 18 after July 1st to register for possible military conscription in the same way that men currently do. Denmark runs a lottery system where a certain number of men, and now women, must be conscripted if there are not enough volunteers. However, in recent years, most military conscripts have been volunteers.

Americas. In the United States, member of the Minnesota House of Representatives Melissa Hortman and her husband were assassinated in their home on Saturday. Member of the Minnesota Senate John Hoffman and his wife were both also shot in their home but survived. Police have said that they are searching for a 57-year-old man who may have been motivated by anti-abortion views.

Also in the United States, the military held a parade on Saturday in Washington, D.C. to mark its 250th anniversary. At the same time, in many cities around the U.S., hundreds of thousands of people joined anti-Trump protests called the No Kings protests.

In Argentina, monthly inflation was only 1.5% in May, the lowest it has been in five years, according to official data. President Javier Millay was elected in 2023, promising to end Argentina's decades of extremely high inflation. And in Canada, a man has won the lottery three times in a year, and he's been

In August last year, David Serkin won half a million Canadian dollars. In November, he won a million. And recently, he won another million. According to the Canadian Lottery Company, winning just one of these times had a probability of about 1 in 33 million.
