Huge loss for the 'taxpayer' from the Government's public transport
The extraordinary loss that the Government company Malta Public Transport made in the first three months in which public transport was in the hands of the Government is of great concern to everyone who pays taxes. This loss amounted to €7 million in just three months. This means that, in just three months, the Government forced the Maltese taxpayer to pay as much as he had previously paid in a whole year in subsidy to the company Arriva.
In a statement on behalf of the Spokesman of the Opposition for Transport and Infrastructure Toni Bezzina, the Nationalist Party said that this is an unacceptable situation from a Government that boasted that it is managing public transport better than the Arriva company and that it was describes the Arriva service as a "disaster". Now the truth of the truly disastrous management of the Government in public transport in these three months is coming out. Due to this mismanagement of the Government, the Labor Government lost everyone who pays taxes €7 million in three months, while the service went backwards.
The Government removed the night service at the weekend, a number of routes were removed from the last cars at 11pm and a number of routes are working with cars that many elderly people, disabled people and women with children cannot use them. In addition, the interest that Minister Joe Mizzi had claimed was in the public transport contract did not result. Only three companies showed interest in the public transport service and two Maltese companies showed their interest because otherwise the Government would have no choice but to settle for the conditions of one company.
The PN said that the lack of interest shows that the Government is managing to discourage foreign investment. This results from the fact that several foreign private companies have withdrawn their interest and commented publicly that the Government has misled them with concealment and interference, which are a threat to investment. The PN wished that the Government would no longer throw the enormous burdens on those who pay taxes, as it did in these first three months in which it operated the public transport. He also wished that the Government would improve the service that went back in these three months in which the Government worked.
