The trial on six kilos of cocaine that were found in a "trailor"

Postponed the deliberation of the jurors because they did not reach a decision

The jurors who entered to deliberate in the trial of Arnold Farrugia, 44 years old from Ħal-Luqa and resident of Ħaz-Zebbuġ, around 5.00 pm did not reach the verdict until 7.30 pm with the Judge suspending the deliberation and orders them to continue with the deliberation on Wednesday morning (this morning). The jurors had come to decide after a long address by Judge Laurence Quintano that between Monday and Tuesday he explained the procedures to the jurors for almost seven hours. It is not known if the jurors will reach a verdict on Tuesday evening, or if they will ask the Court to continue with their work on Wednesday, April 9.

All this after the defense and the Prosecution made their negotiations where they started from last Saturday and ended last Monday after noon.

Farrugia, who went on trial on Tuesday, April 1, is being charged with possession, association and importation of the drug cocaine. The drug was found in a trailer owned by the defendant. The "trailer" had arrived from Genoa in the summer of nine years ago. A total of six kilos of cocaine were found, with a street value of €500,000.

The case goes back to 25 July 2005. In his trial, Lawyer Arthur Azzopardi who is appearing for the accused together with Lawyer Edward Gatt, said that the accused was in no way involved in this case because he was never with the "trailer ” all the time. He reiterated that the accused had in fact arrived in Malta long before the "trailer" and therefore there is no connection between him and the discovery of the drugs.

On the other hand, Lawyer Lara Lanfranco who is leading the Prosecution, on behalf of the Attorney General said that the things in this case did not happen by chance. She claimed that a digital fingerprint of the accused was found on the drug package. She said that this was a professional operation and involved substantial money, and thanks to the useful work of the Maltese Police, the case was solved.
