Are we a bit late? Are we late? I feel like we're late. Were you there with the Flares last weekend? No, I was running the marathon, wasn't I? No, I was running the marathon, I couldn't do it. You ran the marathon? I ran the London Marathon, yeah. Wow. Jill got me trainers for it. Wow. That's some achievement. What was your time? 3:45, I did it. That's not bad. Three hours, 45 minutes? Yeah. Just give us some context to that. Where's that in, like, the... How many minutes per mile is that? It's about eight minute miles, just over. That's not bad. Eight minute miles.
I can't sustain it, so I can do like an hour and a half marathon, but then you get to like 20 and you... Did your legs go? Yeah. What hurts most? The legs and the lower back. But everything just starts cramping up everywhere all at once. What are you thinking while you're running? Do you know what? The crowd carries you a little bit. You're just thinking one more mile and then I'll have a break. Do you walk at all? Did you have a break? I stretched at 24 miles. I had to. Everything was cramping up.
- Well done. - Do you do it for charity or something? No, no. Because I've done it once for charity and I was like, if I do it again, I'm taking the ****, aren't I? - Why? - It's not a challenge then. - It is a challenge because it's 26 miles. - Not a second time, though. Yes, it is. It's doing the work to get to do 26 miles. Have you tried going out running now? I can only do 20 minutes. I did this morning for a little bit, a session I did. It's just boredom for me. Do you know the other day, I took my dog for a walk and it's a bulldog.
and I got about a mile from the house and the sun came out and she was really struggling. So I said to Shelley, "You wait with the dog and I'll run back and get the car." I only ran a mile and I was knackered, like, absolutely knackered. Yeah, but you still look amazing, Jill. No, I'm not really, though. I actually couldn't do a marathon. No, you could, Jill. I don't think I could. You could, definitely. You've talked yourself out of it already. You could do a marathon. I don't know what you're thinking about. Everybody I speak to with the women, they always talk about your stamina.
Three and a half hours though, what do you think about for three and a half hours? What, could you do it in three and a half hours? No. That was my target. I reckon you could. I think I could have if I did it. Did you try and fit it properly? I did, but then I went on holiday just before for the wedding. Can you show us the pace that you ran at if I was just following you? For three and a half hours, go. I reckon it's about that.
- Oh, that's... - Wow, good run. Look at Jill. Jill, do your run. No, look at... Jill, you can easily do it. You should do next year's, Jill.
People are cheering you on. The whole course... Pretty much the whole way. Every mile there's another DJ and stuff. It's an amazing day. DJ? They start off with a little dance with the DJ. Was your pre-season tough, though? Because I was back in the day, it was just all running. They were tough. They were hard. No, they were hard. I remember we had to... We'd done one with Riyadh one time where...
We had to run around Colney, which was about five miles or something. The whole thing. And then you do it and then, you know, he threw that one in. Okay, right. We're going to do it again. But no one could come in in front of the slowest runner. So the two goalies...
I think it was Maxi Miller and Dave Seabrook. So everybody has to run because you can imagine... Yeah, but that's fair enough, isn't it? You're not behind the goalkeeper. Yeah, but if you're trying to finish something like that, to run slower when you're trying to finish, it's harder. No, they had to keep behind the goalkeeper. It's harder to run slower. Oh, they had to stay behind them, sorry. So we had to stay behind them because, you know, the first one... No, no.
The point he was making was you don't leave anyone behind. That's the point he was making. And so we finished... Who was this? Bruce Ritter. So I'm thinking to myself, OK, so I really run well the first one. And he says, OK, we're going to do it all again and no-one can come in in front of these two. It was the hardest run I've ever had to do. Steve McLaren came in, remember, his first pre-season. And usually at United, you have a few days where they let you settle in and then the room...
It was on a Monday and I went out on a Sunday and I went, the next few days will be easy. We came in on a Monday. Bleed test, the first day. Oh my God, a bleed test. I'd been all right, I had a good day by the way and I came in, my eyes, I'm like, what's going on here? Bleed test, the first day. Steve's first pre-season.
trying to impress everybody. I think I dropped out at level four. No way. The thing is just even starting. You can't drop off at level four. I was embarrassed afterwards. I can't do it. I think I remember that. It's very difficult. You always said, don't worry, I'll be ready in a few. Yeah, Steve had a go at me a couple of years later.
Say that to him. Yeah, I said, don't worry, I'll be ready, I'll be ready. But that first day I was caught up. No, I was embarrassed. You dropped out of four? It was something like level four where even the machine had just started. I'd be gutted with myself. I was embarrassed. Yeah. Whatever he got the year before, he said, just get to that, one more level and get out.
And he could go again. He could keep going, couldn't he, Nick? He's meant to be confident. Oh, that bleep test. I couldn't do that, though. I'd get so competitive. Was Yorkie good at the bleep test? Did he cut to the end? Bex used to go to the end, didn't he? He'd complete it. We're used to here. Speaking of Beckham, how was the party? I've seen some pictures of you in the paper. What was that one? Tell me more. I've not seen them. You looked a bit worse for work.
It was before Sunday's game. I wasn't the best on Sunday. No, that's what I thought. The Chelsea game. Yeah. So what picture are you talking about? He was in... He was there, Joe. It was about half three in the morning. We don't care what time it was. What were the pictures? What were the pictures? Oh, don't tell me you weren't going to the toilet all the time. No, I don't do that. Was it a good night, though? It was very good. Were you with Tom Cruise and that?
Loosely. Oh, I thought that was the next one. Yeah, it was there, yeah. Was he trying to get close? Can you forget about all his other teammates? What's happening? Were we not good enough to... You know what I mean? It's because you didn't invite us to your 50th. Do you know what? I told you my 50th. I went to Pizza Express in Altrincham. Nice. No, in Hale. Where would you have gone, though? Where would you have gone, though? I didn't want you there, honestly. Keep writing these matches off. I understand, obviously, it's a big game for them.
So he's just dismissed his league matches. They're a disgrace now. He might sign four or five players this year. He might have injuries next year and he might still be with a team he doesn't like. But he's got to find a way to win games. Do you know who United should play at right wing back after that cross the other day? Harry Maguire. Oh, relax, Jimmy. Harry Maguire crossed the ball and everyone's going, what an amazing feat. He crossed the ball.
We haven't messed the first half up. We've only won 1-0 down. Bottle went. I don't think anybody had that impact in the last 34 years as a teenager. He might not want Trent in his team. He might be a blessing for him. I wouldn't be rushing into signing anybody if I was Liverpool. I wish we had Bruno. Bruno's a talent. A talent isn't enough.
What's upset you about United this morning that you were going about in the green room? Why is it so bad here? It's getting on my nerves. They keep talking about a game next week. Oh, we've got a big game next week and they're just not even trying. They've done it for Newcastle as well. You go, well, and right, you made the point a while ago, they have a big second leg. They're training a lot.
training up in the first leg yeah but Roy can you trust this man United oh right you're training up but then at Newcastle a couple of weeks ago after the match we couldn't focus on today's game because we've got Lyon coming up so you keep putting these keep writing these matches off I understand sometimes obviously it's a big game for them
So you just dismissed these league matches? This final's going to be huge, isn't it? I mean, do you think... They're a disgrace now. They're an absolute disgrace. I'm thinking about United and Tottenham in that final. It's making my stomach go a little bit sick. If they get there, you've still done well, do you? But usually, some teams you'd think 3-0, they're definitely going to win. United are there. United are there. You don't know, though. Bilbo just about beat Rangers. Rangers are 300 points behind Celtic.
My goodness. You never know with football. I'll have a bet with Jay. Who do we have a bet with? Do you want me £100 for Trent? You said he might say it. I'd have a bet for Trent. £100, I'd say United. For charity. What do we make of that? Obviously, Tottenham might have a bump or two over in their game, but I think United are definitely there. But if that game happens, it's a colossal game. That makes my stomach feel a bit like... It's a great game for both of them.
You think so? It's a great game for both of them to try and get in the Champions League for the disgraceful league performances. You know something, that's why they shouldn't, if you win the Europa League, you shouldn't go in the Champions League. So Arsene Wenger said that. No, but that's a bit, well that's unfair on Spurs and United because that's the rules, but I understand having six, seven teams, that's a bit much. I think we're probably, sorry, I think you're probably only saying that because of where they are in the league. Yeah. Yeah.
No, I still think six or seven teams from one country is too many. Oh, yeah, I do, yeah, boy. If you've given that rule... That's not United's sports fault, I get that. Exactly. What if United were third? Well, they'd be in it. You know what I think? Everyone's saying if United are in it, how big United are, but United are going to be in the Champions League. But that's like, you're talking like a small club, as if they've got no chance of winning it. It could be embarrassing. Do you know what I mean? Well, obviously, the way it's panned out now, they're probably... Of course, I get that. Never give...
100% I get it it'll be huge for the club and the format might be they'll probably win one or two games because whatever the season but in terms of winning it you're going so United are going we have to be in it
They're not talking about winning it. We just have to be in it for financial reasons. What's the money if they get in it? So the winner of, say, Tottenham United... It's just all the knock-on effect. It makes a difference for players. The summer, the players, bonuses. It's the whole package. I think it's 50, 60 million base in it. Is it? But even now, it's not just obviously the financial. It's just the package of attracting players and players staying at the club. You go back pre-season, the draw comes out and you're in it. Yeah.
Arsene Wenger said no they should qualify automatically for the Europa League again but not necessarily for the Champions League especially when you're in the Premier League where five teams qualify I agree with that I think it's something for UEFA to think about and review I agree with him
Because you could have teams like, say, if Aston Villa don't get there, but then you've got Man United. You are right about the league placings, isn't it? Really. If you look at the difference in that. Yeah, to have five or six teams, it's called a Champions League. That's the thing. It's just rallying it more and more. Four teams. Winning a Euro...
He's right about something. If you win the Europa League, you go back in. Don't go to the Champions League because this team... I think that's almost the incentive for smaller teams, right? They could get in through the back door. But United lost loads of league games last year. They're losing loads this year. Spurs are the same.
Why did they change it to Champions League? They changed the name back then to European Cup so anyone could be in it. Do you know something? What I feel is that I do actually agree a little bit with Arsene Wenger just purely because every game we're watching at the moment we just talk about the money at stake because obviously the league's gone Liverpool have won the league and the relegation's gone
If you think about it, no one's talking about winning the Europa League to win a trophy. The UEFA Cup and the Cup Winners' Cup used to be big trophies that clubs could win and you used to think, wow, what an achievement. Now, the first thing that you hear after winning the Europa League is, yeah, you get Champions League qualifications, it's a £60 million game. That's the reward. And everything now is about a £60 million game, a £100 million game. It's like...
Actually, the FA Cup has become devalued. Competitions, really great competitions are becoming devalued because of other competitions. Let's come back to last year's. The FA Cup, I think, has come back. I think it definitely, the magic went for a good few years. I think it's coming back the last few years. No, there's been some good games. I'm just saying that because it hasn't got the financial prize, it doesn't get the same level of what would be probably publicity that the Europa League gets. When we played, did we...
So when has all this talk of money really come into the game? Is it more of the Champions League the way it's changed and then there's been a knock-on effect like when the Championship play-off game is...
forget about the glory it's about how much it's worth to you and so they said no it's great for a club to be up there competing for your supporters once they realised Roy that fourth place I don't remember Arsene Wenger he said years ago fourth place is becoming like a trophy yeah yeah people went well he was criticised just for qualifying for the championship wasn't it it's not enough for Arsene Wenger the thing is you look back at it he was right because you're chasing fourth so you can be in there so you can attract
that money when we played when we were competing was there money chat when we were playing I don't remember chat obviously you know there'd be bonuses but we wouldn't be going lads this is worth X has that filtered into the players now I don't think it has got into the players other than the fact the sense that I suspect now they're heavily incentivised
to be in the Champions League so it will make a big difference so if you're into you worry about United and I don't know if it's true or not Casemiro's wage or Rashford's wage went down by 20% or 25% if they're not in the Champions League so you're adding around £375,000 a week you're going down to £275,000 a week which obviously no but I'm not but would you
we'd be talking in the dressing room about, no, your own personal bonuses, but what it's worth to the club. You know what, when we got to the last stages of like the FA Cup and that, you knew what the bonuses were for that. When you get to a certain level, you think, well, what bonuses? But you don't think about it. You're not thinking about it.
I wasn't thinking about it. I felt like West Ham was about the trophy, though. Is it when a team hasn't won for so long? Newcastle wasn't. Yeah, I do. I feel like maybe when... It is for some teams, isn't it? But for United in Europa League, it doesn't feel like it's a trophy, does it? Then you go back years ago, when the Cup winners' Cup, that felt big for United. They didn't want it. But it's just times, I suppose, isn't it? It feels like... But it's like this trophy, you know, for United, it's almost a silly failure from last season. Yeah.
It's a reward. Wouldn't you accept it as at least a modicum of success? If they beat them? Do you know something? If you said to me, in your what would be poor times or bad times that United have had, and you're winning three and four FA Cups and you're winning a Europa League in a ten-year period, some clubs don't win trophies for 50, 60 years, 40 years. Everton, Villa, Tottenham, Newcastle. So for United to win...
The trophies they've won in the last five, six years, if they're to win this trophy, it's unbelievable, really. So there is still something about United. What do you mean unbelievable? Well, Roy, there is still something about United that even though they're having a terrible time, they're awful to watch, they're changing managers, they're finishing 15th in the league, they are in for trophies always. They are in for trophies. People talk about it so much. We're not the right trophies. I know, but Van Gaal, I get it, but
accepting the thing that you can't always have a successful period where you win leagues all the time that's just life it's football it's over a hundred and odd years we've had this conversation I understand that obviously it's hard to win it but then so when you're saying you're going to compete for cups whatever and go back to United in the 80s whatever
But then be... But you're also then on one hand going, well, you can't win the league, so it's OK to be 15th. Oh, no, that's no good. That's not... No, but to win trophies should never... I don't think it should be disrespected winning a trophy. I think if you're playing for one of the big clubs, you're surely part of your challenges and it's hard to win. I get it. It's...
when we were winning it was hard but you want to be able to compete week in week out this United team can't compete that's what it takes to be judged on your league that's what it is everybody says it's ok winning the FA Cup if United were to win the FA Cup and finish if Man City this year for example you don't win the league but you come second or third and you win the FA Cup I get
that you can't win the league every time but don't go from trying to not win the league and win the cup to be 14 to 15 and losing 15 league matches it's a disgrace he has a disgrace and the players have they went to Brentford why can't you play for two competitions exactly the biggest start of the weekend was United going to Brentford United wouldn't be able to cope with an extra game
Going to Brentford would obviously be physical and it'd be up. United couldn't cope with that, man. United couldn't cope with a game against Brentford. They've got Miners. And they're training up from the first leg. I think he's missing a trick for next season as well because he's got to try and find somehow to win games in the Premier League. So what happens next year if they don't have a league? If they have a league match, what we can't because we've got PSG and you can't focus on this league game. He might sign 45 players this year and...
He might have injuries next year and he might still be with a team he doesn't like but he's got to find a way to win games. Scores you don't have an excuse. We had sports a few months ago managers come up with stuff going when I get all my best players back or United at the moment we make changes and then you keep losing football matches when you have you find an excuse with too many demands it's
Next year, we might be in too many competitions. Our squad can't cope with it. So now you're focusing on one trophy. Your mind set can only concentrate on one trophy. That's the situation they find themselves in. You're the manager of United now and you know pretty much that this season, you'd have to prioritise the Europa League if you were Ruben Amrim. You'd have to, wouldn't you? I'm not saying that, Gary. But it doesn't mean you can't win the Ad League match.
After the match, all the noise is coming in after Newcastle. I'm going back three or four weeks. We couldn't focus on this game today. I think they had Lyon coming up. They
They had a game the other day. We can't focus on Brentford because we've got to say, so what are you to dismiss these matches? I think the thing is, it's like they're not trained to win. The wrong thing is, 75,000 people go to watch you at Wolves at home against Wolves at home and you lose. Wolves is a good example. That could be the kids' first game that's watching United for the first time and Wolves at home, you lose one, they're like,
There's loads now. There's loads of games. But they're not the only club that are doing that at this moment in time, by the way. I mean, Arsenal... Man United, isn't it? Yeah, it is. But Arsenal are doing that, I think, to an extent. I mean, what I'm saying to you is Arsenal should... I don't think Arsenal have tossed the league, I thought. I think they're trying to win games. We're trying to win games, we're running out of steam. I get...
You look at us after 60 minutes, this is what I was talking about in Milan last night, where did they find that? Obviously their bench, but you look at us and we do. Arsenal's edge in the league, whatever team he's playing, the edge in the league is gone because they're focusing on the Champions League. The edge is gone. And the same with United, the edge is gone. Once you take the edge off, Liverpool at the weekend against Chelsea,
The edge was just off the game, they lose. Your edge is off United because of the Europa League. The edge is off Arsenal because of the Champions League. The edge is off... But Arsenal's second ever. United have 40... I was going to say that. Thanks for that, Roy, because I was going to say there is a little difference... I'm just saying, once you take the edge off someone... It's like a bigger edge, though, isn't it? Yeah, but the thing is... It's like a fucking massive edge. Yeah, but you look at Arsenal... Arsenal's is that big. Everything that Arsenal are trying to achieve, what Mikel's trying to achieve up to this point, this is the moment. We're right at it now. This is the moment.
This episode of Stick to Football is brought to you by Skybet.
I got asked a question a few weeks ago and Arsenal fans jumped all over me where I said, if Arsenal don't win the Champions League this season, you can't call this season progression. Do you think Arsenal have gone backwards this season if they don't win the Champions League? No, of course we haven't. You haven't gone backwards? How can we go backwards? How can it go backwards with everything that's happened with the injuries and what he's trying to do? People say, oh, you can't say injuries. But what he's trying to do with that team and what he tried to do, I think the summer before, they maybe didn't recruit well enough.
But up to this point, with the players he's got... That's a big point you've just tried to slip in, though, right? He didn't recruit to cover Favre or Jesus. Well, listen, there's a mistake there. You have to say that. There's a mistake there. And they're paying for it. They're paying for it, but it's not to the detriment of how they've played to try and chase Liverpool down, is it? You think they've played well this season? I think the football's gone backwards this season, right? And I like that. I thought they would be in the lead. No, I don't think it has gone backwards. You don't think the football's gone backwards this season? No, no, no. Declan's probably...
Declan's probably like... Everything goes back to Declan. No, I didn't ask you about Declan Rice. I asked you, has Arsenal's football gone backwards this season? I think it's gone backwards. In what way, Gal? Right, OK. How has it gone backwards? You tell me how it's gone backwards. OK, I will. Tell me now. I'll take you Arsenal over three seasons. So three seasons ago when they lost the league where they found it difficult in that last nine, ten games. Yes. Their football was beautiful in parts that season. It was so expressive, really like...
Full out attack, I thought Martyn and Lien Sacco were amazing and it was like, wow, what football. But it probably had the wrong balance, didn't have enough physical strength, didn't have enough defence.
last season I thought the balance was perfect perfect to get no injuries as well right so you've got basically you've added defenders to the squad you've added sort of like a bit more strength physicality they got the balance right between being a team that was really good in attack and really good in defence this season I think they've gone too much the defensive way in respect of they're actually quite rigid to watch Arsenal now they recycle it a lot we lost Saka for three and a half months he's one of our main guys what are you talking about City lost right City lost Haaland yeah but still yeah but that's going to affect you affect them doesn't it
You can't say we've progressed and we're losing players that are going to help us to travel. Yeah, but never remember in football, sometimes you do hit a brick wall and you do have a season where it's not going to... Just because you finish second and second doesn't automatically mean you're going to win the league the following year. If they make the Champions League final, will you still think that? Oh, no, if that's not the Champions League... No, if they make the final. Because surely that's a progression. The thing is that I think that the squad, what he's got out of that squad up to this point with what he's...
But you see, they don't win anything this year. Is there still something missing mentally, you think, with them? Only because we haven't. They're set pieces. They're really poor at set pieces. Conceding, conceding, yeah. You know what? Of course it would be a massive disappointment. Because you can see there's a...
This attacking set-piece coach, is he defending ones as well? Sorry? Well, he obviously... No, there's another guy for that. No, what I'm trying to say... He doesn't get up when he's conceded, does he? I don't know. But what you have to say is the progression in the last three years, the progression of Arsenal was still moving forward. You know, even the other day, I don't want to make excuses because the manager's not making excuses, but he said when he came out for that first leg, you know, and there were seven players that should be first-team players, that's going to hurt a team like Arsenal. Look at our bench.
I think we had Raheem Sterling come off the bench against them and Wanyeri. These are the players that we tried to go to the bench for. They're good players. Wanyeri's a good player, isn't he? Yeah, Wanyeri's a good player. He's a young player to come on in a game like that. Sterling, unfortunately, it's not quite worked out for him. You know what I'm going to say, though, about changing... We haven't got the depth at this stage when we're tired.
When we say about changing the team up because we're resting players and whatever else, surely then players come in and they want to make an impression to then start the next game. Do you not think we've lost that a little bit? At this stage of the season, your bench is huge. We saw it last night. Was it Euros or whatever? Your players off the bench at this stage of the season are huge. There's no way we've regressed. I think Arsenal have got a great chance tonight, do you?
I think I've got great yeah I'm not writing them off absolutely not this is going to go out tomorrow we know but what's happening so why don't we go righty how are you feeling after the game I'm delighted because I'm happy do you think you'll be happy tomorrow morning yeah I hope what about you you're an egg you why two weeks ago remember we were going would you go and watch the game no no I want to be at home having a cup of tea I'm watching it he's in the stand jumping
You said you won't. Oh, which one was that? No, you went to the Paris game. Yeah, but the thing is because it's not in Paris. I'm not going to Paris. Are we on about with the first leg? It's like the first leg of Madrid. I said I wanted to watch it at home. I'm going to watch the second leg on my own again. But you go to the final if they get in. Yeah.
I'm going to the women's, obviously. I'm at both. Do you want to meet up? Yeah, let's meet up, Jill. Thank you. See if we can do something. Of course, I like watching it like that because when you go, it's too much hassle. Do you think they'll win? I think they could win, yeah. Do you? You know something? What I love about this stage of it, Gal, is that...
You know, you saw, again, I thought Inter were magnificent yesterday and Barcelona. Brilliant game. But the fact is, is that, how can you sit here honestly and say, you can't say that because you're at a stage now and you know more than anyone, you guys, is this is it now. It comes down, where did Inter find that second win, bro, to come back and win like that? Put the centre back up front, scores a goal like a striker. The substitute, the substitute come on for Chazy, and he makes a difference. I was happy Inter won. Were you happy Inter won?
Do you know, I never begrudge a team that win their win. But I thought Barca were brilliant. But Inter showed they were powerful. Lads off the bench, they hung in there last minute. A brilliant game. Amazing game. How many times were you offside? Honestly, but like the... Fuck you. No.
Scorsese in those moments you know when you need your centre forward he had two and three around him holding it doing it getting a foul that's the kind of thing you want to see at that stage that game last night was like two boxes if he stayed outside the fucking 7-0 how good were Baxter by the way Baxter keeping it that Yamal you'd like to play against that line though wouldn't you what do you think about that line guys it's Lamal Yamal yeah he just breezes past Peterborough
Why is he so good? I was watching him yesterday. It's like, he's just, he's so good. He makes it look so easy. Is he 17? 17, 100 games for Barca already. The goalkeeper made some great saves. I know that save, he should never have saved the one when he's just got a tackle. Oh, he's got to score. He has to score. The Chalbonga at the end. But the one where Lamar... When he caught in, yeah, yeah. It was an unbelievable save. Do you think he's like Messi, Lamar?
Yeah, just a bit taller. That's what the comparison is too. But he's got that same... As soon as he goes to take people on, he seems like he beats them all. I think with people like that, they can go any way, can't they? Yes. They can go left of you. They can go where they want. He's trying to go through you. And you've no fucking idea what he's doing. Some of his crossing, you know what I mean? I don't want to dig him out, but some of his crossing, you know what I mean, was too much. You know what other great players, you know what I mean, left footed, Messi was the same. They go where they want. I'm sure coaches go, Shawman is right. He's like, I'm
I'm going where I want to. I don't care where you show me. Even if you double up on me, I'm just going between you. Do you know what I like about him? He never just does the simple things. You're watching and you think, no, he might just sit there. He's always looking to face forward, isn't he? Do something different. I like his passing as well. Little passes inside. Yeah. But it's like, when he gets on it, it's like, if he tries to take on, there's two in front of him, he's still trying to take. And none of them say anything. It's like the manager said, when he gets it, just leave him with it.
let him get on with it he doesn't need coaching does he I hope they don't coach that out of him you remember the emotions of the game last night remember they showed the inter bench a couple of minutes ago and they were like almost crying varsity and the emotions of these managers my goodness Barcelona last kick of the game and they had decent possession yep brilliant tackle decision making did you ever cry as a manager cry as a manager like get emotional oh you got emotional I wouldn't cry as a manager yeah
No. Was he crying last night? I thought you said emotional. Emotional, yeah, but emotional. Happy emotions. Sad emotions. They're not crying. Is Jamal the best teenager that we've ever seen?
Why do we have to compare players with other players? Games are not a game. Is that the question? No, no, no. It's a nice conversation. It's hard when you're doing it now, isn't it? Who's the teenager that you've looked at that you thought, oh my God? Wayne Rooney. Rooney or Giggs? Giggs, Wayne Rooney. Yeah. Anybody else? Michael Owen. Oh, it was Michael Owen. Michael Owen, yeah. Different type of player.
I know I always say him. Was he more 21, 22, was it? You know what, as well, can I go back a bit as well to Emilio Butchegueno for Spain? I remember watching him score four goals for Spain in the World Cup. Yeah, but what is it? 17. Are you sure, Reidy? Honestly, 17. 31. Is that it? 31? Honestly. Normal white side? White side, bloody yeah. 16 in the World Cup.
I mean, Pelé was 18 when he first won the World Cup in 17... 17? 58? Did he win the World Cup at 17? I think Pelé won the World Cup, so obviously we didn't see Pelé play. - Brazilian Ronaldo? - Yeah. He was very good. He was on the billiard line. - Is he? - Yeah, 16, 17. Watching him. When he first broke onto the scene, I know I always mention him, but Phil Foden. - You think so? - Yeah.
it's 17 we're talking about you weren't playing a lot then was it well yeah but still this lad's played 100 games yeah I know and Messi had only played 5 by then I think they were saying yesterday yeah but the level of players we just mentioned you've thrown in Phil unfortunately Phil's not having a great season
You know, it's a different level we're talking there. Is it good or bad to be that brilliant at 17? Is there pitfalls ahead? You'll get burnt out. Wazzle, yeah. You said that about Wazzle, don't you? I was thinking about him. I got asked that the other day and I was thinking about you, Mal. I was thinking, he could easily, though, go and play midfield like Bernardo Silva or David Silva did towards the end of the career. Think about you started. Giggsie. Giggsie went inside. You went in, obviously, deeper maybe a little bit. So you changed. Players with that technical ability have the...
if he can keep sort of relatively fit he's going to lose a yard isn't he when he's 33 32 so can he go and play off the front can he go and play in the soft like John Barns yeah John Barns because he can pass you mile yeah
He can pass. He's passing, he's brilliant. Isn't that mad to think you're speaking about where he's going to be? It's going to be like 15 years' time. But Roy just said, is it a good thing? Because obviously you do end up at 27, 28 losing that yard and all of a sudden it's a bit different. And then you have to play... It's football intelligence. Wasn't you young, Roy, at Forest when you came on from Ireland? No, I wasn't. I was 18. That's still young, though. Yeah, but I wasn't affecting games, I was just...
learning my trade yeah but you're a different position whereas a wide you can see yeah of course but they're affecting the big games big games for Spain
and having a big game I think Jamal could be the best teenager we've seen in the last 30, 40, 50 years well to win the Euros with Spain last year to do what he's doing now 100 games by 17 win the Euros the only thing when you're watching obviously he's got lots to learn is he one of them lads who keeps wanting to his feet will he ever get to the stage where you you know to spin him behind sometimes I think let's remember Roy's 17 he'll probably get that at some stage because it'd be easy well he'd want to do that sometimes when they're that good in the ball they go I don't
He's not going to beat two free players every time. He's going to have to get that movement in his game. Did Messi do that? Did Messi stretch teams? Was he always wanting to dribble past people? I'd say he's the best teenager we've seen, but I don't know if I'm saying that just because he's doing it now in front of our face. He's got 100 games under his belt, won a Euros, played at 16 in the European Championships. I don't think anybody had that impact in the last 34 years as a teenager. I can't think of anybody, but I mean...
It would be nice to have seen him in the final, wouldn't it? Sometimes you're watching the game or if you're Arsenal or PSG, who would you want to face in the final?
I mean, there'd be players sitting there going... How old was Waz in Portugal? How old was he in Portugal? 18. He was 18. Defensively, you mean. He didn't get into games. I know, but I think if he'd just had one little bit of... Barcelona scored three last night, they could have scored seven or eight. Yeah. They made the game a mess, don't they? I know, but it was a great mess. I think if Inter Milan Italian team were disciplined, it would make them miss it, wouldn't it? But the beauty last night with the game, because if you analyse it, it was loads of mistakes, but it was brilliant. It was brilliant.
what an amazing it was fantastic and I think the Champions League has been like that all season I think so without the Champions League I think it would have been a boring season to see that many goals there's only the Champions League you think that format is good then at the start some of the games at the start for the Champions League yeah because I thought there were some big games you don't normally see big games so late on day yeah but again you have to be really bad to get knocked out if you know what I mean the format is still on the big boys still get through and like in any cup competitions yeah
The best part is the knockout stuff. The jeopardy's involved. I like it. With them group ones though, it's like they're giving them a bit of toffee just to give them a taste. I get it. It's nice watching big games. Big clubs playing against each other. I don't want to see big games like last night. Ultimately, they're all still going to go through on different scenes. Or Liverpool finish top and end up getting PSG. It's still nice watching them play against each other. I do like that.
I liked it. But not when it's not knockout scores. I still think that. Like last night, when they're just going for it, you're like, brilliant, they're not going. But we've got two more games. Knockout games are obviously the best. Who wins it then? Who wins the whole thing? I don't know. Who? LAUGHTER
I just want to get there. Inter or PSG? You think Inter or PSG? Do you think PSG are that good? I think they're a good team, yeah. I think Inter, wouldn't I? I'm going to go Inter. Did you fancy Inter all along? Just since last night. Did you? I think I said Inter. You know in the group matches, they only conceded one goal in eight games? I think they only conceded one, Inter. I just felt last few weeks they'd gotten a little bit on there because they messed the league up as well. Who? Inter. Oh, yeah.
alright but do you know when you watched them last night they looked big powerful but look at Strong I thought they looked an old team they had their moments where they looked old but then they looked amazing until they brought the subs on the subs were amazing different I kept thinking I think United playing with their back five and the wing back I was thinking about that right wing back Dumfries for United
I'd like to see him in the Premier League. He's uptown, isn't he? Uptown. We get back to United here. Righty. Dumfries. Talked about Dumfries. How good is he? Unbelievable. Unbelievable. His energy. His energy. I know, but that's his job, isn't it? Do you know what I mean? It's his job. He's so good. He's so good. He's so good at right wing back. He's so good. Right wing back. I know he's not bad. Do you know who United should play at right wing back after some of them crossed the other day? Harry Maguire.
Oh, relax, Jude. Did you see his... I'm joking, I'm joking. I know you're joking. Did you see his skills for that cross? Harry Maguire last week, Harry Maguire crossed the ball and everyone was going, what an amazing feat, he crossed the ball! He was great skilled. He's skilled, he's skilled. He cut inside. He cut inside. It's not bad for 80 million, is it? Someone who can cross the ball.
No, it was good. Give him something, man. That was brilliant for me. I thought it was good. Bilbao were like 60 points behind Paris. You know what? I hope Tottenham and United get to that final because that's the one I will be sitting there watching with relish. And Spurs will get through. There could be a twist. Yeah, but the thing is, I go to Glint. Spurs is the one, isn't it? It's not going to be even though it's 3-1, right? Bilbao weren't very good with it. Oh, dear.
But do you know what? I thought that about Leon in the away game. But they'll come to United, they'll look at it and they'll say, this is the place. Bam, they score in the first 10, 15 minutes. I'll have another bet with you. You're going with Bilbao. I'm going to go Bilbao. A million pounds. It doesn't pay off anyway. Mine was 100. It doesn't pay off, does it? You know what? I want some jeopardy. I don't want it to just go like, bam, bam.
but I do want to see you. I won't mind about you. Was that killer last week when Harrison conceded after four minutes? Yeah, of course it was. Was it four minutes? Was it four or five minutes? Yeah, it was four minutes. Thanks, Kieran.
I was surprised that we dropped off them so much. I thought at home the fans were up and ready to go. I thought, get into them. Get after them. Sometimes you get after them. I'd rather see them do that than you think, well, let's not get after them. I'd rather that than them scoring four minutes. And then all of a sudden, as the game went on, we came into it. It's going to be a good one. It would be hostile, yeah. And they will not stop.
I can't wait for the game I can't wait for the game where are you watching it? at home I really enjoyed that we're coming round we're all coming round I can't honestly I just think that game tonight is just you just know something good's going to happen something good for us something good in the game because I'm coming off of our last two results I'm hoping that they are saving something because when you look at them two results what we've had
It doesn't make you feel good, but at the same time, they have got a Champions League second leg semi-final to go. Something big is going to happen tonight, whether it's Arsenal going out or Arsenal going through. It's big. Well, one of them's going to happen. It's big. Arsenal going out is not that big, is it?
I think it's big. I'll be destitute if we go. It's not big, though, is it? It's not one of the biggest surprises in the world, is it? It's big for Arsenal. You've messed the first leg up, haven't you? We haven't messed the first leg up. We've only won nil down. Bowen. Bowen went shut in. If Arsenal get beaten, are you going to go to your back yard and give it up?
proper tears we'll see I want to see tears are you seriously and your neighbours shout no to it are you serious that you thought they bottled it yeah bottled what oh so bottled it if you bottle it you lose two or three
Seriously, Scoles? No, you just lose. No, we haven't lost those half-time, Scolesy. You have to see how we play tonight. I thought you had to win... All right, the away goal reel doesn't count anymore, does it? Why bottled, though? What makes you think they bottled it? I think they bottled it in a few big games. When? Bottle job. When? You'll get them done. I go back to City last season. No, we can't go back. City away.

Oh, was that the... When you had a chance to win the league.
Yeah, but that's last season. We can't go on. I'm just saying it's the same group of players, really, isn't it? Same manager. I don't like your vibe. I don't like the bigger cage. I love you. It's made me feel terrible. The last big game you won was probably Real Madrid, wasn't it? Yeah. Is it that big? Massive, no. It's fucking massive. It's not massive, is it? It's out of this world. It gave us the belief. It's not that big. It gave you the belief to go and get beat by PSG. 1-0 at home at half-time.
It's not over yet. We have to do this next night in a couple of weeks and then you can give me this vibe.
He's serious here, you know he's serious. I know he's always serious but like... I'm so sure. That City game sticks in my mind from last season. If we beat them tonight... If you had four or five players missing, you're dream, Neil, nothing and you're fucking over the moon on the pitch celebrating. You've got to go to them places to win the league and win. So if we beat them tonight, Scoles, I hear what you're saying, Scoles, if we beat them tonight, does that change anything how you feel about the City because then that surely erases it.
No, because then they've moved on from it. Still bought a bit then though, didn't they? "I can't win. I can't win." Gary, when you're sat at home watching the game, do you have to be by yourself and do you, like, practise your commentary?
I'm just trying to picture you like... Is it John Burrys that used to watch Match of the Day with his gloves on? Really? Yeah, I sit at home with the microphone on. John Burrys. Diving. I heard that his missus, he used to just at any time, his missus would just throw an orange and he would just dive and save it. No way. Watch Match of the Day. Yeah. I sit at home with the sound off with a sort of camera on me with the microphone on, practising my commentary at one end and then watch it back after.
with my commentary on it. Can you watch it as a fan or are you looking at formations? No, I've watched Last Night's as a fan. As a fan, yeah. As a fan. I loved Last Night's game. It's just...
Yeah, I love the idea that something big is going to happen in a game. I'm really disappointed with the end of the season. There's no title race. There's no relegation scrap. It's like, you want a title race? Yeah. That's what disappointed me about... I'm not going back to Arsenal, but that's what disappointed me a few weeks ago about Arsenal, that they were so far away. You're not going back to Arsenal. No, but the fact they're not pushing Liverpool this year is disappointing. And they lost to Wrexham in the FA Cup. 92. Yeah, but I didn't play in the game.
This episode of Stick to Football is brought to you by Skybet.
OK, something else we've not covered before. Trent Alexander-Arnold. Oh, Trent. Is that why Jamie's not here? We're the best. We're the best. I'm going to pay you. What's wrong with you? I ain't going to bring money on the show. OK, he's finally decided to announce it, that he is going to Real Madrid. He's leaving Liverpool. And there was a mixed reception, it's fair to say, from Liverpool fans the other day. I think Jamie Carragher said that he was disappointed.
I think a number of Liverpool fans have said that they're disappointed in him. A number have said, well done, thanks for all you've done. Where are we at with that? I'm delighted. I think he's an amazing challenge for you. Is it a disappointment because he's a Lorcan lad and a Scotsman? Is that more so than his footballing decision? You can't begrudge him the move. It's an amazing move for him. He spoke with such eloquence simply because he's come to a point where it's not about...
them better or anything. It's just on his journey. Yeah. It's just the next step in it. And I honestly, I'm delighted for him. Remember what he was saying about if you could think back, if you had the opportunity, if you had the chance, do you think about, well, if that opportunity came, would I take it? I cannot understand that people are not excited about the fact that he's won everything he can win now. Yeah. And now he's going to arguably one of the best in the world. Yeah.
you know I think that must help imagine if they finished had a bad season it's going to the biggest club in the world people can't be happy for the fact that okay he's come from here and he's going I think because of us though I think if it was a lad from Manchester maybe we might feel a little bit different
A lad leaving United? Yeah, I think so. But do you think in this day and age... What, if he's won all that? No, I think, look, it's hard to accept that when you're at United or Liverpool and you think you are the biggest club, that you basically think that somewhere is bigger than you and the fact that someone who's basically been brought up in that city would leave. I get why Liverpool fans would be a little bit disappointed and upset.
but having seen you know look back to 30 years at United or 20 years at United when players left to go to Real Madrid Ruud left to go to Real Madrid Becks left to go to Real Madrid they were different circumstances though weren't they yeah but players have left big clubs to go to Liverpool before so that's the game and it's not necessarily about the bigger club it's just for Trent but you don't think but if you speak to a scorer I guarantee if you speak to a scorer you go do you think Real Madrid is bigger than Liverpool he goes no of course they're not I'm not going to say that and we wouldn't say that I've just said that Real Madrid are the biggest club but I
You wouldn't say that about United. No. Do you think in this day and age, though, a player stays somewhere for the whole of his career? Like, he's literally been there from, like, an academy. I just think, like... If he's winning. I know, but I think... He's gone to a new league, Jill. He's obviously going to get a brilliant deal, a new culture for him. No, that's what I mean. I think it's a good thing. It's a good thing. I'm like, do you think he stays at Liverpool for the whole career? Can you think of anything negative about that move? I can't think of anything. From a footballing point of view, I understand Liverpool fans thinking...
loyalty and I get that again it's an emotional game but if you step back look at the bigger picture he's a brilliant player he's done well for us I don't get the burning of the shirt I've seen that you know what it comes down to the fact that they've not got money for it yeah there's a bit of that so you think to yourself so if they did get money we didn't have to pay for it but if they got 50 million would they look at it differently yeah but the thing is but that's not his fault what about do you have to look at the management
how can you let a player like that you should have offered him something it's the club's fault they might have done right they might have offered something that was too late we would have heard about it when you're in the last two years make a statement that we've offered him the best contract we've ever offered anybody in the scene it's there if he's not going to sign it we're going to sell him that could have happened and it didn't happen and now yeah but when you're in the last two years right it
They can sell it. All right, yeah, but a player would still be in control in the sense of... Yeah, but then if he says that, Roy, then all of a sudden, then he's got to go through all that rigmarole of the fans. Are you going to sign? You don't want to sign? Could they not have sold him in January? Weren't they selling him at 20 million or something? Yeah, but it wouldn't have been... You wouldn't sell him. Weren't they trying to go for the league and sell him the Champions League 20 million? I can't believe that all the Vets list is because they didn't get money from him. So if they got money from him, would they be happy for him? Because that can't be it.
It surely can't be the only reason why they're so focused. I still think most Liverpool fans would generally be thinking, listen, all the best. I think so. You'll always get a few lunatics and a few idiots who would be upset with anyone leaving. Do you think he plays over the next couple of weeks?
got a big game against Arsenal they got a big game obviously in the last game of the season where they get the medal he might be sub they might bring him off the bench or something they should give him some time for that last game like a good set off I think apparently Schlott's known since March or something that this is when it happened he's not daft he's not signed by no plus you know you look at Schlott he hasn't even got his own players into Liverpool yet he might not want Trent in his team it might be a blessing for him but he'd make him he'd
He'd obviously make him weaker for next year without Trent. Yeah, I think so. But then you don't know who he's going to bring in. I like him, but he won't be as good as Trent certainly going forward. Absolutely not. In a few years' time he might be. Liverpool would be weaker and obviously they'd get someone in the summer, but at this moment in time... He seems to get a lot of injuries as well, that lad, doesn't he? I wouldn't be rushing into signing anybody if I was Liverpool at right back. The only reason I would is because he gets a lot of injuries. Because I think when you watch him, I think he's...
He looks brilliant. Honestly, I remember seeing Trent's first game at Old Trafford when he came in for Liverpool and thinking he did really well that day because he was really young. Conor Bradley's a hell of a player. To be doing what he's doing in his first few games. We've been talking about Trent for the last seven, eight years how brilliant he's come forward. He's a lot to live up to. I'm going to go forward here. Yeah. I don't think they will never replace Trent Alexander-Arnold ever again.
I've never seen a right-back kick a football like that in my life, so I think the idea that they're even going to look for someone who can do what he can do... That means they're weaker already now. Ronald Bradley's different, though, isn't he? He's different. He's not got the technique, but I think he bursts it. He gets it through, yeah. Yeah, but his end product, again, Chelsea the weekend, there was a couple of times he got in, and it was two or three occasions, just not the right passes, and that's fine. Obviously, we're talking about Trent here. Trent would have picked somebody else. He's not played loads of football either, has he? Well, he's defending, though. He does disrupt the wingers, I think. He does get a feeling, doesn't he? Yeah.
Well, he's a better defender now, isn't he? I think that wouldn't be hard, would it? I think we have to wait until he has that full season so he can get himself his Premier League legs or whatever and then we'll see how he goes. Because obviously, like Scoles said, he's had some injuries. But I believe that once he gets going, the way he can link in the midfield, play one, two, get down the wing, he's got great pace. But he won't have as good as end of product. It's not going to be easy for Trent to get into the Madrid team.
Once he's fit, Carver Holligan. The thing about it is, Scorsese, when you're going to a club like that, there's no way you're thinking, right, I'm there to play. I remember listening to Becks saying about... You're there enough to play. You don't think you're there to play? No, no, no, I don't think you're there knowing that you're going to play. You're going to be one of the first teams. You're going there to be in there, to get yourself in a position where you can play on a weekly basis. Yeah.
And that's going to push him, isn't it? Absolutely. And it's Real Madrid. It's not going to be easy. Liverpool will do this, but I would invest heavily in Conor Bradley in the sense that I think if you bring someone in now as a right-back that undermines him slightly and you end up then... Because what ends up happening then is you end up swapping. So I think bringing someone in who's maybe a right centre-back who can play right-back, Joe Gomez, if he was fit, would be ideal for it. But I think with Conor Bradley, I think he's that good
I think he's that good that you would literally, even with Liverpool's left back for the next 10, sorry, right back for the next 10 years, I actually also think, and this is someone who, to be fair, I couldn't cross a ball for shit. Trust me. You're being harsh. No, no, no, no, no. Hear me out. Hear me out. I couldn't cross a ball for shit when I first started as a right back in the first three, four, five years. I practiced a lot at crossing in terms of delivery. When did it start? When did it start to play off? I teed it up under the fucking peg of him. I know.
I knew this was coming. I got to a level where I could put a very good ball into the box on a consistent basis. If I say so myself. Carry on, girl. We made him look good ball. We just ran near a defender. Conor Bradley, when he actually starts to realise that a
cross is only a pass down the line which to be fair he's already a decent crosser anyway he could become an excellent crosser of a ball I like your mentality do you know something do you know what simplified it for me I used to be able to play a really good channel ball into Coley's feet or into Yorkie's feet or into Teddy's feet when I realised that a basic I used to put pressure on myself when I used to go to cross it thinking shit it's a cross you're watching Beckham cross it or you're watching Scholes or Giggs cross it so I used to think when I actually relaxed and thought oh it's just another channel ball thank you
He's just another channel boy. He's just another twin area guy. When did you get to that point though? In five asides last week. When you started fucking heading him in. I'll send you some goals later on this afternoon. So basically, I think Conor Bradley can become an excellent cross river ball is what I'm saying. Even from where he is now. Is he really that bad now? No, he's not. I think he's a good crossing ball now. Is he as bad as you was? Is he as good as Maguire crossing?
Gary, that was a good point you made. I like the down the line for the cross. I like that. I like that, dude. I like that. I think it can become a top right back. Did you just aim for an area? It's not far off in now. Did you aim for a specific area or did you get your head up north towards the edge of the box? So do you just think... I was told this by a coach, Michael Jimmer. He said,
don't try... You're not good enough. What coach? Jim Ryan. Right. He said, stop. You're not good enough. He started off with that and then he walked away. You're not good enough. The mistake I used to make was a couple of things. Technically, I used to have too small a stride up to it and sort of shuffle before I crossed it, which was wrong because it was a bit of a panic. Secondly, I'd made the mistake of looking up thinking, who am I going to pick out? Yeah, yeah, yeah. If you're crossing a ball...
You have to be absolute... You're Beckham, Gerrard or...
Trent Alexander-Arnold, if you can time the ball on a whipped cross from someone from 25 yards away, if someone making a run like that, you are a pretty special player. So basically, this coach said to me, stop looking in the box. You're never going to be able to find that player, right? What you have to do is hit just a good area. A good area and let them be there. And that was it. And I never used it up. Bex used to look up, literally pick someone out running and be able to whip it onto their heads as they were on the run. It's down to the forward now when he was crossing to Bolo, isn't it?
So it's back when you get a bit of space. If it's you, you think... No, your nose. He's probably going to miss kick it, get across the front post and make it look all right. Yeah. A lot of goals are scored from bad crosses as well, but it's just to fall into the area. So the key thing was... When Eric used to say, though, don't cross it for the sake of crossing it. Yeah, yeah. Oh, no, play away. So you'll cross it without looking. Oh, yeah.
Oh yeah, I used to, so basically if I couldn't feed it in and I was going to cross it, if I couldn't feed it into people's feet and I was going to cross it, it was just a case of, right, this is exactly where I'm going to put it. I'm going to put it into the back post. I'm going to put it into the near post. You have to, like Trent is an actual freak. Yeah. That's a freak.
That is honestly a freak watching him cross a ball. That is not... It's ridiculous, yeah. We used to have a city where we're kind of... And it was actually Rodolfo who'd been with Man City men. It used to be like where the ball was, so if it was going to the byline, we knew it was going to be a couple.
if it was a bit wider we knew it would be back post and we knew where the ball was but every area should be covered anyway but we kind of knew where the cross would be going which was good because you're kind of one step back you want that girl I don't want a defender who's pointing it in to be looking up because I'm making moves to try and get to the near so that when your head's down just put it in there there aren't that many good crosses anymore have there
No, you don't really see it. No, there are. It's too condensed now. Everybody's already there. So they get down there and they cut back. Who crosses the ball from there? I was talking about other players like Rhys James and Kieran Trippier and Trent Alexander-Arnold. They're all very good crossers of the ball. United, I'm thinking about United. Is James going to get his game for Chelsea? I think Bruno's a very good crosser of the ball. I think Bruno gets into that right channel and thinks about some great balls. Yeah, he is, but you wouldn't think of him that, would you? How good has he been, by the way, last year? Yeah, he's been good, yeah.
Ever since Roy said something, he's got another gear out of him. He does some things. They're getting great records at United this year, yeah. Fuck's sake. No, but I mean... I wish we had Bruno. Bruno's a talented player, but talent isn't enough. Right, Super 6, Ben.
Right, Ben, let's take us away. Super 6, last week, Gary 13. Wow. Very good. That is an excellent iron. Very good. Roy 8. Wow. What did you get? 13. You're done. You're finished. Game over. There's still time. Absolutely blitzed.
destroyed can you be sneaky yeah but you know what we were unlucky no what we were unlucky what was the you don't even follow the scores when we do them you know what though when we're not doing well and we know we can't catch it we're still going to try and get points exactly yeah we're not writing any games hearing you describe your Super 6 performance is like you sort of describing Arsenal in the league this season you know what I mean unlucky you know all those blamings from one of us David Moyes he won you like 20 points I know
You're giving a loan. You can't talk to me about Arsenal like that when United are doing what they're doing now. Right, here we go. Yes, City. Southampton City. Meany pants. Saturday three o'clock. Have you had a haircut? I have. You've gone for a new kind of new look. I need a new deal. Yeah, that looks good actually. What are you talking about?
- Face of City. - Did Wright get you your trainers? - No, boys. - Is that a bye then? - Irish great man. - What are we doing here? - I think 2-0 to City. - Two? - Yeah, two.
No, no, no, put the two. He said two. He said two. He said two. He said two. Come on. He said it. You have to repeat it. Three or four, mate. Three or four, I think. Three or four. Four? Seven. Were you? Seven. I have a way as well. City run right there, I think. You've just said the same bloody thing. Well, we'll get this. Three or four. Three. Three or four. Three. Three? Yeah. Three. Do we give them three? Yeah, we'll give them three. Has anyone watched Southampton live this season? I've not watched them live. Yeah, they hammered Man United. They could have been three in the lot. Yeah, and they missed it.
You've got to beat 3-1. They hammered him for 17 minutes. United had a reserve game a few days later so they couldn't focus on that. Bold old Glento. I did the game four weeks later. Fulham, Everton. Fulham, Everton. Everton. Everton are done, aren't they? Season over. Fulham are going alright. You're
It's about who's got stuff to play for, isn't it? 2-1 Fulham. Skip the cheers. I'd just dive in there. Nice one. I like that, Roy. Fulham Everton. I'd go for a Fulham win, would you? But I would have gone probably that score.
You can't have the same. It's a new rule. I'll show you one. I think Everton are weird set pieces. Yeah, we'll go 2-2. We'll go 2-2 now. Yes, man. Do you like it? I think this could be it. Wolves at Brighton. It's a weird one, isn't it? It's a weird one, isn't it?
Not playing for anything, are they? What about Pride, Gary? What about your Pride? Your fans you've travelled? Brighton have still got an outside chance. Bonuses. League bonuses. Brighton have still got a chance. Wolves, Brighton. Wolves, form team. Hey, your team are doing well. 3-1. Yeah, we'll go with that. 3-1 Wolves. 3-1 Wolves. Wolves aren't scorned. There we go.
Do you think a draw? 1-1. 1-1. Good sell. Do you think a draw? 1-1. Bournemouth. Bournemouth. Bournemouth.
I'm backing all these, aren't you? Bournemouth, you're the Bournemouth man. Villa. I'll always go for it. Saturday 5.30. Villa do need something. I think Bournemouth beat them. No, I think Villa. I think Villa as well. 2-1 Villa maybe. 2-1? OK, 2-1 Villa. I don't like going against Bournemouth if I'm trying to win. I'm backing all this one.
1-1. Hey, here we go. Look at Forrest. Forrest Leicester derby. Forrest Leicester. They're not going to go to us. Is that a derby game? Yes. Yep. Forrest Leicester. 2-1. Forrest. 2-1 Forrest. Nothing bigger. I think there's a twist in this. Rude. Forrest. Leicester. No. Exactly. Forrest still needs Champions League. They still need to get in the Champions League. They're going to... Forrest. Trying to impress Rude for the Champions League next year.

Do you think he'll stay? I think Forrest will beat him at least 3-0 because it's a derby as well. They're already down. When's this game on? I don't know. This game is Sunday at quarter past two. Is that on the TV? Quarter past two? That's what I've been told.
- I'm not going to rest. - Must be. - You have done a lot of games. - Forrest to win. - Forrest Leicester, Sunday, 2:15. - Leicester win to Wolves, if you wish, and Ruud was fuming.
Yeah, but will he leave? We go 2-0, will we? 2-0 for us. I can't see Leicester. Would Vardy score? Liverpool, Arsenal. Big game. These big games I get excited for. Liverpool were poor the weekend, weren't they, really? No, no, the last two games, obviously, beat Spurs. They've won the league, though. Poor against West Ham.
poor against Chelsea he left his midfield out as well I know Arsenal wins when you won the league if Arsenal win and obviously you still had games remaining what were them games like for you? yeah that's what I mean crap I think they just want this game out no but they're still at home a bit of pride kicks in but Arsenal are not going to be great either are they? no but if Arsenal win if Arsenal qualify will they be I think we'll get excited and it's going to be 0-0
No, not his goals. His goals in this game. We give Liverpool two goals. You obviously think Liverpool can score two goals. We'll take Gilles' nil-nil. 2-1. 2-1 Liverpool. Yeah, come on. We'll take Gilles' nil-nil. To be fair, you've got room for a risk. You're nil-nil, yeah? Yeah, we'll take Gilles' nil-nil. Thanks. No, it's not going to be nil-nil. Oh, my God! If it is nil-nil, I'm joining them. Get back in it, then.
Can I just say, there's a big game, Sunderland-Coventry. Do you think Sunderland can play-offs? I think it's your way leg on Friday. It's going to be a big game. Lampard's done well to get them into play-offs, hasn't he? Sunderland have lost the last five, I think.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said this week that Manchester United should never have sold Scott McTominay. Do we agree with that? That's a community question, that. He's done amazing, though, hasn't he? He's done really well. Italian Footballer of the Year. Scott, he's never going to be able to do what he's doing at Napoli, at Man United. It's a great move for him. Man United couldn't see what, obviously, we're seeing now at Napoli. You can't blame them. What didn't happen, Scott, was him and Fred together. It just wasn't a good comeback. I know Ali praised the two of them.
Beyond me. There was obviously something in Scott. He had more than Fred going on. But as a partnership, it wasn't happening. United weren't competing. I go back to that. But his strength, Roy, his strength seems to be... When you look at Scott... He got tarnished. A bit. Was it McFred? That's what they're using him for. And what he's adding to his game to fear, he's obviously always added...
had a goal in him and he's got that up to another level how many goals has he got in Italy this year and that helps every time we talk about someone scoring goals that's the chat if he wasn't scoring the goals at Napoli we wouldn't be talking about him we saw glimpses of that Roy before we left when Ten Hag moved him forward a bit and he kept scoring there was glimpses of what he could do I get it but you can't keep talking about players who leave a big club and go you can't keep everyone I still think
I think he could have been in the group 100% but if you said he was going to play every week I'm on about United getting back to the top. It's brilliant for him to go and show that he's back. What didn't help was the players they brought in. Sorry, right. Instead of him they've not brought in better so that's why you keep going back to these players. But I think United's recruitment has been that poor that you still talk about people like McTominay. When these players left the club I don't think we ever thought no, that's the wrong decision. One more, sorry. When these players left the club people...
People like McTominay, right? You've got them thinking, oh my God, outrage. I think it's probably the right time for him to leave. £25 million. I think it's probably the right time for him to leave. But I'm surprised how well they've done. You look at people like Anthony. What was the issue at United? Look at Conor Gallagher as well. He's kind of done well, hasn't he? You say what was the thing with Anthony, but I think as much as it was at the time everybody went crazy, that's pirouette on the ball.
That was just like, honestly, I think that that just, he doesn't realise the damage that done to him in respect. I know he scored on his debut day and stuff. And the fee was huge. It was 80, 90 million. And so you see him do that and then since then, it's just, it was just like that. Again, right, do you know we have to look at every player in every situation and
and a right foot for right club he's gone off to Spain maybe that suits him down to run on Spanish football the lifestyle the weather the club have done the job haven't they because he's gone on long done well and they're going to get some money it's worked for United as well they'll probably get a stock back up they might get £50 million from that what is a moment in life that really impacted you here we go how long have you got meeting you guys and doing this
What's that again, Jules? Meeting you guys. Oh, Jules, stop. Talking about it. Don't die. I was. I'm not going. Have you gone? Have you gone? What are you looking at? What's the moment in life that really impacted you? It's a question. Probably birth.
Yours? Yours? That impacted your mum? Yeah, that impacted me. I didn't want to be here. When Arsenal dragged you to Paris and gave you the bad news, that was a bit cruel, wasn't it? Even though your body language has all changed, you've gone on a bit like... I don't know, you forgive him for that. I won't... No. OK, who's going? Roy, come on. I've not got one. What? Give me an idea. Impact?
Everything impacts you. Do you mean a positive impact? Yeah, let's concentrate. Let's do a prop. People have made an effort. Should we make it easier and make it in sport or in football? No. No, let's make them get deep. Come on. You're not allowed to use sport. What moment in your life has really impacted you? Is it on me here? I'm thinking. I'm thinking. Surely having kids...
Yeah, I forgot about that one. No, but becoming a dad... Yeah, becoming a dad, yeah. You lose somebody, yeah, of course. God, I think in United, yous were told to be non-emotional. Come on, let some emotion out. Do you know why we won? Do you know why we won a lot at United? Because we were emotional, Jill. Football's an emotional game. I know. Fights, bust-ups, it is. You saw the game last night.
Brilliant. Emotion in that game, let me tell you. What impact? When someone passes away, obviously your family members... Yeah, that's... Nice. I've never really... I don't know anybody close to me who's died. Is that right? Yeah. Grandparents' goals, you know? Well, yeah, but not, like, immediate. Right.
I think yeah I don't know that probably is immediate isn't it it would be my dad dying to be fair I was going to say I've had nothing like that that was a terrible that's not a good thanks for the question you know what whatever you say sometimes you have to go to that place go to that place nice is it difficult to analyse a friend when you are a pundit and they're a player a manager or a coach I'm going to go I'll go first the answer is definitely yes yeah
This is definitely yes. It's a lot more difficult. I mean, I was literally...
I was dying every single week when Oli was manager United. I was dying every single week on television because the reality of it is, I'm never going to say... You're going back him. You know, he's going to say... Yeah, but you knew at the time he was struggling. You knew at the time he was under pressure. He said those things, but people were saying, should he lose his job? And it was a constant question every week for about two, three months. It's like, I never... To be fair, I'm glad I never broke. You know what I mean? I never cracked. But in the end, you were thinking...
I think there was a time with me with Frank Lampard. I actually said on one, I think I said on the... Was it Everton? Everton. I think I actually said, you know, "It's my friend. "I've got to try and back him here." And then, honestly, the way, the criticism that comes off the back of that, I actually don't care, because in those moments, you do need to have somebody in that kind of public who's willing to do that.
domain who is backing you because they know the content of your character. It comes down to that. You've got people who are giving you a stick who would probably back their friends. You have to back them. Not to the detriment of... Even if they're not your friends, would you ever sit down in a studio and say, someone's got to be sad? There was Gareth as well. Gareth Southgate was hard as well. Especially with the England thing. Yeah, Gareth was... Yeah, Gareth was hard.
Yeah, but you wouldn't sit there anyway and say someone's got to be sacked, would you? No. Have you ever said that about anyone? No, but the point is it's almost like you're even couching your criticism in such a way which isn't in any way... Right.
Right, yeah, of course. So people assume a nature. People say to me now, will Ange lose his job at the end of the season? I say, yeah, I think there's a good chance that he will because I just know the way in which Tottenham work. You know what I mean? That's a way of couching. Not because I think he should lose his job or shouldn't, but just the way Tottenham work, I think Levy will have made his mind up now. Yeah, but you can word it. There's different ways of wording it.
On the other hand, you wouldn't go after somebody either. But that's human nature as well. You'd never go after a manager, even if you thought, deep down, I don't like this guy. You're not calling him to be sacked, are you? He could possibly be sacked. Yeah, and the easy thing is to say he's under huge pressure with his job. But the thing is, remember as well, with you guys, with the Man United guys, under Oli, people were tuning in
just because they wanted to see what you're saying. So then, if you said something that was too... Yeah. Not really critical of him, I'd say, ah, it's because it's his mate. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it is. It is, yeah. In the end, that's it. And I think there's nothing wrong with that. The only thing that worries me sometimes, there is...
pundits out there and people and they do look after people and it's almost too extreme. You've got to give somebody a little bit of criticism because they know them or they're friends with them or they've got the same agent with them or some pundits. Have you ever felt like that in the studio where you've known someone really well in the managerial role where you thought it's more difficult? I mean, Ollie obviously is the obvious one. The obvious one for me was Ollie. I can't think of anybody else where for me it was like... No, but you try and be fair. I think you try and be fair to all the managers. But is there anybody that you felt a little bit like...
I wish he wasn't not a case where you felt uncomfortable but where you felt I wish he wasn't the manager so I didn't have to talk about it you know what I mean no not really that's the way it is no I've never taught I've not taught otherwise but I'd like to think I'd have that mindset Gareth maybe with England yeah Gareth a little bit but I wouldn't be daft you knew Gareth was under pressure after a couple of bad results you'd say he'd be feeling it but you wouldn't be again you wouldn't be going after a manager that's the one thing I wouldn't do after
A six-size player is no problem. Managers, I'd be... Because I've been there and I've done it. I know how hard it is. I find it hard. I don't do many of the women's games and stuff because I'm like... Because of Ian? No. Right. We're here. We're finished. That's it. Optimise your nutrition this year with Factor.
