Good evening and welcome to Monsters Among Us. I'm your guide, Derek Hayes. Welcome back to another terrifying installment. Now, as I mentioned, my name is Derek Hayes, and I'm a researcher, filmmaker, podcast producer and host, and most importantly...
A collector of spooky stories. And tonight, per usual, I give you a glimpse into my vast collection. So let's not waste any time, and I'll give you the first peek. Coming to us from parts unknown, please welcome tonight's only Anonymous Scholar.
Hey Derek, I'm going to leave this one anonymous. This goes back into the very early 80s and was in the wintertime and I used to be riding with a motorcycle club. And so we had a friend of ours in the club who got shot and he unfortunately passed away. We went up to his funeral. So it was winter and
And shortly after that was New Year's Eve and they always had a big party. And so we were in the clubhouse.
It was late. This was after everybody was done with it. There was a few of us left. It was just a big open room. It was just a big, big open room. Most of the guys were downstairs. It was me and my girlfriend, two of my girlfriends on the couch. And there was one guy at the bar. And so my girlfriends fell asleep and I was sitting next to him. It was, I don't know, it was probably about three in the morning or so.
And I was sitting on the couch next to my girlfriend's. They fell asleep and I started falling asleep too. So I just started nodding off. Whoever was up at the bar was cleaning it, starting to clean up the mess that was there. It was very cold. All of a sudden it was really cold. And so there was two, a big door in the front of this room and then another door out the back.
And of course, I'm in the basement, but everybody was down. Most of the guys were down in the basement. And so I woke up because I thought, geez, who opened that door? Because it was so cold. And I looked up. The door was closed. But I had seen like walk in, not through. I'm not going to say through. He was just by the front doors there. And it was the guy that got shot and had passed away about a month earlier.
And he just walked all the way through. And again, this is a huge room. So he walked from there all the way through and he was smiling. And then he waved and he just walked through and then looked like he went out the back door. Although the back door again never opened. You know, it was cold when you walk through and then that cold disappeared. And I looked up at the guy at the bar and
And he looked at me and I mean, I think we were probably just both shocked. And I said, did you just see that? I said his name. I'm not going to say it now, but I said his name. And he said, yeah. And we just sat there and stared at each other for a long time. So that's it. It was just very strange. Again, it was in the early 80s, but it's something that I never forget about.
I guess it was just very weird and strange. Okay, thanks, Derek. Thank you, caller. I'll tell you what, when I go, if there's any sort of opportunity to haunt someone that I used to know, you best believe I'm going to take it. Nothing would make me happier than to give those folks the heebie-jeebies. Or maybe simply just find a way to say hello. And maybe that's exactly what your friend did here, caller. Maybe he had a window and he took it.
How many of you would do the same? And how many of you have had something similar happen to you? Well, caller, regardless of how, it sounds like your friend did. And we thank you for sharing that experience here with us. Now, folks, we gotta make a living here. So we need to take a quick break. But when I return, more tales of aliens, pale creatures, dark shadows, and even a creature straight out of the movies. I'll be right back.
It literally sets people and communities back. But not just because of a lawsuit on Bundy High. Get a grip. This is what you play for. We're doing that again this year. Now, growing up, there was no place safer than Grandma's house. I spent so much of my time there, it may as well have been my second home. And a couple of times in my life, it actually was. But what do you do when you get to Granny's and you find out
She's not alone. Please welcome Nate from New York.
Hi, Derek. This is Nate. I'm from Westbrookville, New York, a small town near the tri-state area of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. I'm calling about an instance where I believe I saw a shadow person at my grandmother's house one morning. So this was back when I was about, I want to say, six or seven years old. I used to sleep on a cot next to my grandmother's bed whenever I went up and stayed with her.
And it was a relatively small house, nothing fancy. And I remember, like, certain times when I'm there by myself, like, I have to, like, check up on the dogs or something because we lived right next to each other. I would notice that I always get the feeling like I was being washed in the house. So one morning, it was about, like, springtime.
sometime on a weekend because I would normally go up when I was out of school. And I just remember looking in at her doorway and I just see this black, pitch black figure. Like I said, I was only like six or seven years old so I didn't know any better. And I'm trying to think in my head in the stereotypical reaction where, oh, if I shut my eyes and I covered my head, it would disappear. So I'm sitting there for three minutes and
Everyone else was asleep, so I was the only one awake that saw this. After three minutes, I pulled the covers down.
Thank you, Nate.
Now coincidentally, my grandmother always said that her place was haunted. Someone named Charlie, she thought. And if you would have stayed there overnight, I bet she'd start to believe her. Because we'd experience all sorts of strange sounds and odd feelings. Especially in the back half of her house. But you know, regardless of who your grandmother's visitor was, Nate, we truly appreciate you telling us all about them. Thank you again for the phone call.
Now, folks, if you have a story you would like me to share here on the program, just call my 24-7-365 hotline at 888-608-NIGHT. That's 888-608-N-I-G-H-T. Or you can record your story on your cell phone and email it to me at MonstersAmongUsPodcast at gmail.com. And if you are calling in, don't forget the rules. True stories only.
Hey Derek, my name's Chad, I'm from Nova Scotia, Canada. I just have a story I want to tell you guys there.
Back, whoa, it must have been 14 years ago. I was just like 15 years old. I invited a couple friends over. We were outside playing in the woods all day. It started to get late. Me and the boys decided we were just going to have a sleepover at my parents' place. So we were all just hanging out. And there's four of us in total. So we decided to sleep in the living room just above the bed.
Anyways, we were there watching movies, eating snacks, not having a cat in the world like 15-year-olds do. Fell asleep and right around like 2:30, 3 o'clock in the morning, there was a loud bang on the deck. My parents have a ranch-style house, so it has a big jack-in-the-side and a covered porch on the forefront of the house. And there's a patio door on the side of the house with a deck.
So we're looking around. After a few seconds, this white object whips through by the patio doors, peeks the corner, and runs in front of the window of the living room. And this thing jumped clear 10, 12 feet off the deck onto the porch of a parent's house.
and overlooking the porch is my parents' bedroom. So I guess the bag allows us to woke my parents up. They're looking around wondering what the heck's going on. They yelled down to us saying like, "Boys, what are you doing? It's 3 o'clock in the morning. Like, you guys, quiet down. You shouldn't be outside. You should be in bed." They're just like, "Uh, we're all down here sleeping. Just woke us up. We don't know what that is."
Right after that, the object ran by their window and it kind of freaked them out. They didn't know what it was, so they ran up to the window. As they got to the window, we made it across the kitchen. We heard it running across the house, so we're looking at the kitchen window. And man, this thing jumped 25, 30 feet out off the roof.
into the grass, didn't even stumble or nothing and it took off on two legs to the tree line. As it got to the tree line, the air light and stuff wasn't really bright enough to cover that area. It kind of crouched down on all fours.
He just kind of disappeared into the darkness. Slowly though, his hearing man, it really freaked me out. It really freaked my buddies out. It even freaked my parents out. They come downstairs, we were all, I saw them standing there. They kind of interrogated us like, it wasn't you guys, right? Like, made sure we weren't playing a prank or nothing. No, it was, we were all 50 year old boys too. We were in blankets laying around.
didn't know what it was but as it slowed down I kind of got a look at it so did my buddy and so did my mom it was like a seven to eight foot tall bipedal skinny skinny white
really dark, like a deep white, kind of gray colored creature. I didn't see a face or nothing. I just see his back mostly. But like you could see like bones kind of like poking the skin. Like the skin was really like tight over his body. But that was it, man. It really freaked me out. I'm just happy there's other people there to see it and it wasn't just me. Just so I know I wasn't dreaming or anything.
Thanks for ringing in, Chad. There's nothing like getting blamed for the ruckus of a monster. Now whenever I hear a story that I think might be a pale crawler story, and it seems like Chad's here is exactly that.
I always go straight to a handy interactive map on the World Wide Web. It's a collection of dozens, if not hundreds, of sighting reports of tall, lanky, pale creatures. Most seem to know these days as the Pale Crawlers. If you're curious, I put a link in the show notes. So naturally, I did some digging around Nova Scotia on the map. And to my surprise, there were three different encounters reported from the peninsula.
One from Westville, where I witnessed something pale, tall and unusual out the window of their bedroom. Here is a segment of the report: When looking out the window I noticed something very pale white crawling through the tree line. It immediately caught my eye and I kept staring at it. I called my ex at the time to come and take a look. We both got really quiet and we came to the realization that we weren't witnessing a creature that either of us could recognize.
It was human-like in form, very skinny, purely pale and crouched forward with very long arms. It would make a few movements toward the yard and then back deeper into the woods again. Now there was another encounter that took place in Fall River, Nova Scotia, when a landscaper saw something he couldn't quite explain. Here's a snippet of what he saw.
I was out in the back of his yard dumping leaves, dirt and sticks into a pile in the woods. When I heard something rustling by the trees to my left, I turned toward the sound to see a six or seven foot tall bone white thing running away from me back into the woods. And lastly, a third encounter in nearby Ovens Natural Park in Nova Scotia, where a pair of friends got separated in the park. And while alone, one had a run in they wished that they could forget.
Again, here's a brief portion of that report. Then he said he heard someone walking by and he saw this really tall and pale figure stop and look at him and then continue on. For some reason he assumed this was me coming to look for him and that's when I called him and told him I was in the cabin. He said that in retrospect it was inhumanly tall and pale and couldn't possibly be a person.
he was not himself for the rest of the night and didn't seem normal until lunch the next day now obviously these reports don't solve anything or really give any answers but what it does do is prove that chad is not crazy it might not have been a monster that he saw that night but whatever it was he certainly wasn't alone in seeing it so thank you again chad for taking the time to call in now folks this next one is another brush with a shadowy entity
Tori from Colorado, welcome to tonight's program.
Hey, Derek, love your podcast. My name is Tori and I'm from Colorado. I wanted to tell you my story. I've been listening to podcasts for a while now and I've been hearing everyone's stories and I figured, hey, why not let everybody know what I've experienced? So I'm going to start at the beginning. I believe people who do have experiences have them for certain reasons and sometimes they have them a lot.
So my first experience happened around 1995 or '96. I was about six years old. And we lived in this house. It was a two-story home. The basement was always really creepy.
I remember one time the power went out and my sister and I were on the stairs and we completely froze and just freaked out. My dad and his friend had to come down the stairs and grab us. I remember my sister, she was in a walk around this time. I remember she completely fell all the way down the steps and there were probably like, let's say 15 to 20 steps. Tumbled all the way down. She was completely fine. So I believe there were a couple of different forces at play.
Like there usually are. I believe there's always energy at play. Good and bad. So I remember one night I'm sleeping in my bed. We have a bunk bed. I'm on top. My sister's on bottom. And I wake up out of a dead sleep. And I turn my head to the left. I remember I can turn to the left and I can see straight out the door. And there is this black figure standing there. Darker.
Then in the dark, there was no nightlight or anything, but I could see this entity standing there. It was like he had a big cloak and he was as big as the doorway. Possibly some red eyes. I can't remember even seeing any type of facial features.
I just kind of remember thinking, like, is this the devil staring at me, pretty much, until this day I think about it. I just remember I was scared. I covered up my head really fast, and I laid there. I was just getting really hot, and I laid there until I went back to sleep. You know, I passed out from, you know, probably fear. And I woke up the next morning like everything was normal, but that was just one thing.
But yeah, even recalling that entity kind of, I don't know, sends a type of shock through my body, which is why now to this day, I listen to anything my children tell me and I...
vibe off of energies. I know when there's something around and I choose to not be scared because when I was younger, this thing really traumatized me. And now I'm older and I know I'm stronger than whatever that darkness is. And yeah, I just wanted to share my story because I love hearing all the stories. Can't wait to hear more. I binge listen all the time. Keep up the good work and thank you so much. Bye. Thank you, Tori.
Sounds like an awful lot of activity for one little house. And the Shadow Man, a very typical experience. But just because it's a typical encounter, doesn't make it any less terrifying. So thank you again, Tori, for sharing the tale.
check this out live and in person from your favorite seat what's the takeaway now next up is a story that's sure to keep you up tonight rj from idaho welcome to the show
Hi Derek, this is RJ from Owyhee County, Idaho and I wanted to call in with my abduction experience. I've been having a hard time talking about it, well ever since it happened, but I was a kid living out outside of Holmdel, Idaho on the Idaho-Oregon border and one night
after my little brother and I ran into my dad's room because the coyotes would surround the house and it would scare us. So we got in the dad's room and cuddled up next to him and everything was fine and fell asleep. And I woke up and I saw bright lights coming through the windows of my dad's room, which is really unusual because we were surrounded by fields and our nearest neighbor was several miles away.
So there's no noise, no nothing. The lights went off and that's when I heard some footsteps in the hallway.
And they were like soft footsteps, you know, like somebody walking without shoes on. And I sat up in the bed. My dad was still asleep. My little brother was still asleep. And I looked over at the door, and the door slowly swung open. And there were three beings that walked in. One went to each side of the bed, and the third one was at the foot of the bed, and
And I couldn't move, I couldn't scream, but I was sitting up and my eyes were open. I knew what was going on. And this creature, this grey, got up on the bed and started crawling on its hands and knees towards me. And it put its face right next to mine. And I could see into its eyes and the eyes was like endless black. It was like the abyss.
I blinked
And I was still in the same position, sitting up. And everything was gone. The creatures were gone. The door was shut. There was no light, no nothing. From what I remember, I think it was 3 a.m. 3 to 3.15, I think, in the morning. And, yeah, it's been weird. I've been waking up every night at that time. Anyways, thank you, Derek, for getting us...
Thank you, RJ. Well, this was 10-year-old me's biggest fear. Alien abduction. The greys. Those bug-eyed little freaks walking through my wall. Into my bedroom and hauling me away. I obviously watched way too much Unsolved Mysteries as a kid.
because I was convinced that this would eventually happen to me. But I wasn't the only one to have this fear. And some folks out there, like RJ, had a legitimate reason to fear these things. Because apparently, it's already happened to them. Now like in Tori's previous story, just because the encounter you had was similar to many others before it, and I suppose after it, that doesn't mean that it wasn't heart-stoppingly terrifying.
and likely PTSD inducing, and to prove that RJ's experience was not all that unique. Here is another encounter that we thought was eerily similar to his, right down to the involvement of the little brother. The following clip was pulled from the documentary film, Abducted by Aliens, Testimonies of Encounters of the Fourth Kind, which can be found for free over on YouTube.
My very first memory in life is actually of an encounter. I was two years old. I was in my crib late at night and a face came into the room and stared down at me at the foot of the crib. It was kind of skeletal. That's how I was able to put it into some context because at the tender age of two, you don't really have a
a background in saying, "Oh, that's an alien." Well, maybe today's, you know, television. Back in 1973, you know, that was the closest I could equate it to. But it wasn't a dream. It didn't go away. I started to scream and it continued to stare down at me.
And my parents in the other room, I could hear my mother's voice saying, go back to sleep, go back to sleep, it's okay. And she never came to the room. And after a few moments, the face just got up and left the room. I say face, there was a body attached to it, but it was so dark I really couldn't make it out. And I could tell it was on its way over to my brother's room. I'd sure hate to hear the brother's version of all this. Who am I kidding? I would love to hear that.
Just like I loved hearing RJ's tale. Even though it might have triggered a little PTSD for me from the late 80s. Thank you again, RJ, for sharing the tale. Now, folks, real quick before we continue, I wanted to mention the huge sale we have going on in our merchandise shop at MonstersAmongUsPodcast.com. And by clicking the shop tab, we're very excited to announce that my mom back in Ohio is going to take over shipping duties for us, which will free up a lot of time.
Especially for Sarah. And, more importantly, it makes some space available here in our house. But that means we have to ship all this stuff out to Ohio in order to get her set up. And that's gonna be costly. So our pain is your gain. We've put everything in the store on sale. 20% off. In hopes to thin out a bit of the inventory before shipping day.
So run, don't walk, to MonstersAmongUsPodcast.com and click the shop tab. Shop for next Christmas, grab your birthday gifts for the year, or just pick up those items that Santa neglected to bring you. No, I don't think this sale is going to last very long, so do not delay. That's MonstersAmongUsPodcast.com forward slash S-H-O-P. This next entry is reminiscent of something that happened to me when I was a wee boy. But more on that after Pete's entry.
out of Alabama. What's up, Derek? My name's Pete. I'm 44 and I live in southeast Alabama. So the event I want to share tonight took place back in the house that I grew up in as a kid back in Hampton, Virginia. I
Just a little bit of basic background about my family. I grew up in a really religious household. My parents were Mormon, so the concept of good and evil and heaven and hell and God and the devil, it was something that was really kind of on the forefront of just my learning experience as a kid.
So shortly after my family moved into the house, my oldest brother and my family consisted of, you know, my parents. I had two older brothers at the time, one who was 11 years older than me and one who was seven years older than me. But shortly after we moved in, my brother, he started kind of out of nowhere having these really bad behavioral issues.
started getting mixed up in some stuff that ultimately landed him in a youth detention center. And I just always remember multiple times as I was growing up how my mom used to always make this statement, how somehow she felt like the house had something to do with his behavior. So yeah, there was always just this really just...
unsettling, uneasy feeling about that place. My story specifically that happened to me happened when I was about four years old. At the time, I shared a room with my older brother who was 11 at the time. And
And we had this really big bunk bed that was made of pure oak. And the bottom part of the bunk bed had these built-in cabinet drawers for you to be able to put clothes and stuff in. And they probably stretched about halfway into the bed. And the back half of the bed was kind of like this box.
open cubby space where a full person could kind of fit in that space but you didn't have access to it because it was pushed up against the wall so when I was a kid I used to ask my dad all the time if he would
pull the bed out so I could get under there and you know play with my toys and build a fort and stuff but he wouldn't do it very often because the bed was like super heavy and was sitting on top of the shag rug. I slept on the bottom bunk and my brother slept up top and this one particular evening it was in the wee hours of the morning
And I woke to the sensation of feeling fingers running down the back of my neck, running down my back towards kind of small of my spine.
And I was facing, I was kind of facing the room, out towards the room. My back was facing the wall. And, you know, kind of even before I could really realize what was happening, I felt a hand grab me.
the back of my pajama top, like in the center of my back. I firmly grab it and I felt it start tugging me like in the direction of the wall. So I panicked and I tried to climb out of the bed, but the hand was really strong and it kept pulling me back towards the wall.
and I could feel it like trying to pull me like towards the crack. I kept feeling this hand pull harder and harder and the more I struggled the harder it felt like it pulled to the point where it had pulled me flush up against the back of the wall and I felt as though it was going to
pull me under the bed. So I screamed. I screamed as loud as I possibly could.
And when I screamed, the hand let me go. And I darted out of the bed, went through my bedroom door, which was closed, went into the hallway. And as my parents' bedroom was directly across from mine, as I opened my dad's door, he was already standing in the doorway and, you know, came through the door directly into my room and cut on the light. And my brother was in the bed.
with the covers over him and it appeared to me that he had been sleeping. I told my dad what happened and he went and he checked and the bed was pushed all the way up against the wall. So I went and slept in my parents' room that night. You know, my dad blamed it on my brother and, you know, punished him. But all I could think about
was how could he have done it? Because I watched my dad struggle to get this bed out. And, you know, how could a 100-pound boy pull a bed out, get under it, pull the bed back to the wall, try to pull me under it? And within the time it took me to get to the hallway and my dad to cut on that light, somehow replace the bed and get back in it, it's physically impossible.
And this thing really haunted me for years and years after that. Every bed I ever slept in for probably the next 10 to 15 years, if it was up against the wall, I had to sleep on the very edge of that bed as far away from that wall as possible because I couldn't take the risk that that hand would grab me again.
Just one last kind of weird, interesting point I feel about all this. My mom took me trick-or-treating to that neighborhood about 10 years later, and my mom was talking to the neighbor, and she mentioned that the next two owners of that house after us had had these really crazy experiences with the
The most recent owner, I believe, committing a murder in the home related to some sort of infidelity or just something along those lines, domestic abuse or something like that.
Thanks, Pete. That is super spooky stuff.
And like I said, similar to something that happened to me when I was six or seven years old. I too had a bed next to the wall. And one night I had a vivid dream that there was a serial killer of some sort that wore a dirty bunny suit. And he was going around killing people in our area. He called himself Esther, which I still think is very unusual. And he drove this old-fashioned tow truck on which he would transport the bodies.
right out there in the open, on the hook. And he lived in this huge, decrepit old barn, and would hang his victims on the wall using meat hooks, almost like taxidermy. Well, like I said, this was a very vivid dream, and I remember it lasting a really long time. But when I finally awoke, the first thing I noticed was that I was covered in sweat. The second thing I noticed was that I was wedged between the bed and the wall, all the way down in the crack.
So far that I couldn't get myself back up out. So although my experience was not paranormal, it was disturbing. And it sticks with me to this day. So I can only imagine how those fears and concerns can increase with the addition of some unknown, unseen force. So whatever you experienced, Pete, I can't thank you enough for sharing it with us. And part of our engagement...
Alright, time for our next entry. So Elizabeth from the Show Me State, please show us some ghosts.
Hi, Derek and the Monksters. This is Elizabeth from KCMO again. So, I was listening to season 14, episode 5, and there was a lady talking about a silhouette of a man in her doorway, and...
It reminded me, I have two different weird sleep-related experiences. So the first one, I was with my brother when he lived in St. Louis. I was sleeping on the couch in the basement, and I'm not much of a sleeper, so I was still awake.
I was laying on the couch. I just put my phone down and I started hearing footsteps upstairs and I just figured, oh, that's my brother's wife. She's probably feeding her newborn. She'll be fine. And then I just suddenly got this overwhelming sense of dread, like there was something very, very wrong.
And the way that the house was set up is it was less of two floors and more of there was an overhang and then a set of stairs and then you're in the basement. And so I just got this immense sense of dread. And then I heard...
What sounded like someone loudly mouth breathing, probably five, ten feet away from me, and I just froze. And I didn't know what to do. And the breathing went on for probably 20, 30 seconds.
And eventually it stopped and I did the kid's thing all 19 years of me and hid my head under the blanket because I didn't know what else to do. And after about 30 minutes, I finally poked my head out and saw there was no one there. And that uneasy feeling started to go away.
I just thought that was really strange. I looked it up and there's apparently phenomena called phantom breathing. And I didn't get much out of it, but I think you might research better. But my other story took place in a little town called Sedalia, Missouri. And this happened in grandma's house. And she's not my grandma. She's everyone's grandma. And they
They told me that, oh yeah, there's ghosts, there's something spooky in the basement. And of course, I'm third eye blind, so I didn't see anything like that. But I was, again, out on the couch in the living room, and I could swear up and down this is a dream. But, I don't know, something about it was weird, and it made the two people who lived there, being grandma and grandma's granddaughter, feel...
really nervous and they looked at each other when I told them and went like, "Yeah, that happens here." But basically I was on the pullout couch and I heard what sounded like a little kid, I want to say a little girl, I don't know why that's what my brain tells me, walking around in the hallway. And in this dream I picked up my phone and I called my friend.
And I said, "Hey, can you come out here? I heard something really weird and spooky." And they said, "Yeah, I'll be out there in a second." And then I went, "Okay." And then I felt on the bed, little feet take one step, two steps, step over me, and then sit down. And then instantly my eyes opened and there was nothing there, but the bed was depressed like something had just sat down.
Thank you, Elizabeth. Phantom breathing. I've never heard of that term before, but it's pretty obvious what it is. In fact, I believe it was last season when I told you about my step-grandmother's issues in her tiny apartment. Something invisible keeps breathing around her at night, on her couch, in her bed.
Now it'd been almost a year since I'd heard anything about this, but I was recently talking with my dad and he informed me that nothing has changed and that she's still experiencing the strange breathing sounds. Now I hope to make it back to Ohio sometime this year, and when I do, I'll be sure to check her place out. And when I do, you guys will be the first that I tell about it. So stay tuned, but in the meantime, thank you again, Elizabeth, for sharing your tale. Okay.
Now this next call takes us to where I live, Southern California. Please join me in welcoming Ryan to the program. Hey Derek, my name is Ryan. I'm from Los Angeles, but the story I'm about to tell you took place in La Habra Heights, California. I think it was around 2010, give or take. So La Habra Heights is a really small town. It's up in the hills. So the roads are kind of windy and the roads get really dark at night.
And on this one particular night, I didn't really have much going on so I decided to just go for a drive and kill time. And I ended up driving through La Habra Heights at around 8 or 9 p.m. So I'm just driving around, windows down, listening to music, not really wanting to go home yet. And at one point I drive under some streetlights and the light from the streetlights lights up the inside of my car just enough that through my rearview mirror I can see that there's somebody sitting in my backseat.
He was sitting in the middle seat. His head was slightly tilted to the side. He had very little emotion on his face. But if I had to guess, I'd say he seemed upset. And he was just sitting there staring at me through my rearview mirror. The guy was Asian. He looked like he was in his early 20s, which is how old I was at the time.
Honestly, he just looked like he could have been another guy in my group of friends. So anyway, we locked eyes through the rearview mirror for about one to two seconds, and I think I just froze, and we just stared at each other. And in the blink of an eye, he was gone. So before this happened, when I was younger, I've had a couple of experiences where I'd see dark figures in the corner of my eye, but it was always something I could kind of
like rationalized to myself like it was the trick of the light my eyes were playing tricks on me blah blah blah stuff like that so what made this stand out so much from all those other experiences was just how clear this guy looked he didn't look ghostly he wasn't translucent he wasn't wearing clothes from a different time he just looked like like you know like a flesh and blood living person that just appeared in the backseat of my car
So anyway, once he disappeared, I pulled over for a couple minutes just to kind of compose myself. And then I headed to my friend's house. And my friend's mom was there. And I told my friend what had happened. And I guess he had told her. So she came out with some candles and then asked me to let her into my car. So when I let her into my car, she lit the candles, said some prayers in the backseat.
and I guess blessed it. I think she was Buddhist. Not really sure. But the thing about that is, like, I had had that car for a while, so I don't really feel like the figure appearing had anything to do with my car. I feel like it probably had more to do with the road I was driving on. But who knows? Anyway, love the podcast. I hope you can use this. Thanks. Thank you, Ryan. Ooh, that's creepy.
Everyone knows the classic ghost story slash urban legend about the killer in the backseat and the person in the car behind them trying to warn the driver. But this version has a bit of a twist. The killer, in this case, is just a ghost. And you know I have to mention the similarities to one of our most popular calls of all time. Julie's entry from Season 10, Episode 6, where she too saw someone in her car unexpectedly.
In her case, the victim of a nearby fatal accident. And you know, like Julie's entry, this one was pretty damn good. So thank you again, Ryan, for calling it in. Now for tonight's final entry. And as I teased earlier, this covers a monster straight out of a movie. Johnny from the UK. Tell us all about it. Hi, Derek. Johnny from Preston again, England. Got another story for you. This time it's, I think you call them
What do you call it? Stealth. Like people in predator suits where you can see them, but not see them. But anyway, yeah. So I was in the Lake District. If you don't know the Lake District, that's where people go camping. It's where my highest mountain is in England, Scarfell. I was actually near there-ish, 20 miles away, something like that. But anyway, yeah. So gets up. I think I've been in the lakes two days. So I get up in the morning, half six, seven o'clock.
had my breakfast, put everything in my bag to do my next section about 20 miles. So I starts walking up a valley and as I'm walking up the valley I felt like I was being watched. That's the way to describe it, somebody was watching me.
So I'm walking around and then I look up the side of the valley about 100 yards maybe a little bit more and the best way I could describe it was the predator was following me like the you know when he's in stealth and you can see him moving but you can't actually see his shape you can just see a mass and yeah really strange I watched it for 10 seconds maybe a little bit longer and
And I thought, right, I'm seeing things. It's not there. You know, it'd been a hot couple of days, but I was well hydrated. I wasn't food deprived or anything. I always make sure I have enough food and water. I'd actually just eaten and drank.
So yeah, I watched it for maybe 10 seconds. It was just strange. It was just like a moving mass. Like I'm 5'8-ish and this thing, I'd say over six foot. It looked over six foot. It was tall. Everybody's tall to me, but that's a different story. But yeah, it was strange. And I've heard people mention it a few times. I've never actually heard anybody from England talk about it.
I've mostly heard it from your side of the pond America. But yeah, just thought I'd share that with you. Thought it was a bit strange. Thank you. Love everything you do. Love you. Bye. Thank you, Johnny. It sounds like what you saw is what we call the Glimmer Man. Now, I'm not very familiar with this area, so I had my researcher Delaney look deeper into it. And as it turns out, there is a military installment nearby that just might work in advanced camouflage.
The following blurb was pulled directly from her research. RAF Spadum is a Royal Air Force station in Cumbria, England. It is home to the 9,000-acre electronic warfare tactic range, making it the largest RAF base in the United Kingdom. Now, primary EW activities have been developed over time to exploit the opportunities and vulnerabilities that are inherent in the physics of EM energy.
We're talking electro-optical, infrared and radio frequency countermeasures, EM compatibility and deception, radio jamming, radar jamming and deception, and electronic counter countermeasures, including electronic security, EW reprogramming, emission control, and spectrum management. Whatever any of that stuff is. Now of course none of that exactly mentions cloaking, camouflage, or light bending technology.
but it mentioned plenty of things adjacent to that. So who knows what they might be developing there and testing nearby Cumbria. And you know, all of that led me to the obvious question. Are there Glimmer Man sightings in the UK? Or more importantly, are there Glimmer Man sightings anywhere outside of the U.S. of A? Because sure, we receive all sorts of reports from here in the States, but a lack of reports anywhere else in the world could suggest that this is strictly a U.S. thing.
Which could suggest that whatever these things are, they're somehow related to our own government and military. So I asked Delaney to search for UK encounters as well. And to my surprise, she managed to find a few.
The first occurred in the southern reaches of the UK back in 97 or 98. The witness finished dinner and was walking their plate back to the kitchen when they noticed a four to four and a half foot tall figure that they thought might have been a young boy standing there in their kitchen. Here is how they described the entity. The only way I can describe it is the figure of a young or small boy, but it was made up entirely of an almost transparent liquid like water.
The outline was the clearest part, because the difference in how this substance refracted light compared to how empty air refracts light showed up more clearly on its boundaries, where the two mediums were side by side. The closest comparison I could think that reminded me of it was the watery creature from the film Abyss, or like Predator when he turns invisible. Now she also uncovered another witness who claimed to live in the countryside of the UK.
and saw what she thought looked like a cloaked predator-like entity that reminded her of the 3D magic eye posters from the 90s. She even claimed that her daughter has seen the same entity as well, all apparently within their home. And finally, an encounter from Scotland that only occurred two short years ago. The witness was standing at their back door getting some fresh air when they noticed the sounds around them begin to change, as did the atmosphere.
Then they saw two bright white eyes that quickly disappeared. Then they began to make out the familiar shape of a human, or a human-esque figure at least, as it walked slowly across their garden. Now the eyewitness even claimed that they could hear this figure as it climbed the fence on the edge of their property. So there you go. And if my little theory holds any water, what Delaney found just might debunk the idea that this is somehow the U.S. military.
but with sightings outside of the US, the chances are good that it's not all ours. Now whatever these witnesses saw, and whatever Johnny reported, we're thankful to have heard these stories. So thank you again, Johnny, for calling in. And there we are, folks, the end of tonight's program. Unless you want more, of course. In that case, just stick around until after the outro, and I'll see that you get another helping. But until then...

Now tonight's secret entry takes us to the land of Lincoln. Please join me in welcoming Deb from Illinois.
Hey, Derek and Monsters Among Us fans. This is Deb from southeastern Illinois again. I had something weird happen last night. We live in an old church. We've converted it into our home. And we've lived here about 10 years now. And this has never happened before, although we have had some incidents.
experiences and have had friends who are sensitive tell us about the various entities that live here with us and they've always been peaceful. Now last night at 11:30, yes, it's cold out. It's, you know, it's Illinois. It's getting chilly. It's in its forties or whatever in the evening. But at 11:30 virtually no wind. And like I said, this has never happened before.
The bell in our bell tower rang three times. My husband and I looked at each other. Now, we're the only church in the area that has a bell. We're not really a church anymore. We're a home, but still we have the bell. And it was clear as day. I asked our neighbors if they had heard it.
They did not, but they were all sound asleep. I can't explain it. I messaged a good friend and she said that it means something about going full circle. Shout out to Krista for letting me know that. It also means there are angels presence. I read that, but I don't know. Like,
We're trying to sell the house, so maybe it was letting us know that, hey, everything's going the way it's supposed to, and you've come full circle, it's time to move on now. Maybe somebody else can tell me what it means. I would love to know. Thank you, and have a great day. Keep it spooky. Bye. I'll tell you what, Deb. You worry about the why, and I'll worry about the how. And I'm a little worried because I sat and thought about this for a long while.
Trying to figure out what could have caused this bell to ring. And you know, I can only come up with a few explanations. But I will admit, they're all just as far-fetched as the idea of a ghost somehow doing it. So that probably says something. But what if someone shot it with a pistol or a rifle? It sounds crazy, I know, but just drive out in the country. Almost every sign you see out there has a bullet hole in it somewhere.
So maybe someone passing by fired a shot and dinged the bell, just enough to get the clapper to ring a couple of times. Or maybe a falling meteorite did that. But you see the issue there is that the trajectory would have had to have been from the side. Otherwise, you'd assume that the roof would have been damaged in the process. You see what I mean here? None of these quote-unquote logical explanations really seem to solve this mystery.
Now debunking aside, I love the idea of turning an old church into a home. I see a lot of these century-old churches for sale back east, and some of them are extremely cheap. Cheap enough that it always tempts me a bit to buy one and build a home-slash-studio in it. But, after hearing Deb's story, I'm no longer sure that such a great idea exists.
Now, thank you again, Deb, for calling in. And thank you for listening thus far. But you can get so much more Monsters Among Us by joining us in the beyond. After all, it's in the beyond that we share stories, like Lucy's out of Georgia. Hey, this is Lucy. I'm calling in a delivery or a transport story.
I formerly worked at a bakery here in Georgia, and these are some of the paranormal instances I had while as a delivery driver for this bakery. When I first started, one of the first days, like driving out, we're a bakery, so we open up very early in the morning and driving out in the dark, coming up this hill,
And out on the side of the road, about the size of a dog, but this glowing yellow fog on the shoulder of the road standing there. And I watched it as I went past it. You know, it never dissipated and it stayed there. It almost seemed like it had a tail. It just looked like this glowing yellow dog on the side of the road. I'd never seen it since. I tried to explain it.
