This episode is the second of three for us as we continue to discuss mentally obsessive thoughts and reactive, impulsive, and compulsive behaviors along with what we can do to foster or abandon this addictive tendency. The two ending questions from our first conversation were: Alyssa: How does this relate to forgiveness? Sturgis: How do feelings work in relation to thought?As you walk through your day consider what you hear and you will know what fits since it will not require obsessive thought to maintain it. This often occurs as your awareness grows beyond your first impression. Your experience will value your considerations as worthy of attention, or not. This is not to suggest it will be pleasant to look at what is happening accurately. When food is rotten is smells bad to alert us that it is not safe to eat. Nature works in our favor. Food for thought works the same way. To feel good about feeling bad is maligned and the natural inner conflict will remain as long as we think what we need is to feel better about wrong thoughts we are entertaining. As wrong thought is seen as the cause of feeling wrong the choice to adjust our thinking can become obvious. Feeling wrong dissipates when we stop fighting what we are doing. Obsessive thinking will persist as long as we resist what we are doing. Problems are corrected by focusing on the cause rather than treating the symptom or effect. Responsibility, Freedom, and Choice are core principles of human functional capacity. Principles are inherent in human experience and fundamental to virtue and value. Principles are not negotiable they are fundamental and ever-present no matter what we think. Principles do not suffer when we deny them, we suffer as a sign we know better since we are naturally principled. We are apt to say we're sick when we have a runny nose taking a day off work or canceling engagements to get better and keep others from potential contagion. Yet when our thoughts run in chronic circles it is not as common that we take time to discuss or diffuse the contagion. Addiction doubles down on the problem as the solution. Our bodies are designed to eliminate waste, constipation is an unhealthy condition. Obsessive thoughts are mental constipation. Pain is our guide to what is wrong, to help not harm. Thoughts that have no substance do not become substantive when we pay obsessive attention to them. Not re-choosing, repeating, re-acting to a reactive thought is always possible.
