The fear of man can resurface due to vulnerabilities and temptations that arise in different seasons of life. It’s not a one-time overcoming but a recurring challenge that may need to be addressed multiple times.
The Bible refers to 'fear of man' as the desperate quest for the approval of other people, which can lead to making decisions based on human approval rather than God’s will.
Consequences of fearing man include spiritual dryness, irrational anxiety, emotional isolation, bad decisions, sin, denying Christ, compromising values, and people-pleasing, which can rob joy and intimacy with God.
Fearing man can lead to denying Christ, as seen in Peter’s denial of Jesus three times before His crucifixion. It involves prioritizing human approval over God’s will and commands.
The story of Barabbas and Jesus illustrates how people chose a criminal over the sinless Savior, showing that fearing man can lead to valuing human opinions over God’s perfect will.
In the church, the fear of man can manifest as seeking approval and avoiding criticism from fellow believers, which can be a challenge for those who have previously overcome fear of man in the world.
Romans 5:7-9 states that very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, and even for a good person, someone might possibly dare to die. However, while we were still sinners, Jesus died for us.
The fear of man can lead to making decisions based on the approval of others rather than God’s will, resulting in spiritual dryness, bad decisions, and compromising one’s values.
Repentance is crucial in overcoming the fear of man. It involves acknowledging the sin, surrendering it to God, and asking for His strength to overcome it.
The devil manipulates people into fearing man through tools like money, careers, being canceled, or not having friends, which can lead to compromising one’s values and prioritizing human approval over God’s will.
