Hector, who was 22 when Renee was 16, was abusive and manipulative. Renee's father went to jail because her ex-husband, Hector, cooperated with the government and ratted on him. This betrayal devastated Renee, as her father was her lifeline and identity. Losing him was a major trauma that led her to severe depression and further substance abuse.
