He calls me, and I can hear him telling them that he found me. I can hear her crime. And then I saw cme. And IT was just like, oh my gosh, like she's just been waiting for us all these years.
SHE grew up in a spring loving family, but couldn't help wondering about her roots.
What am I really? I was wanting to know where my people came from.
So like millions of us do every year, he took test her results. George dropping. Now.
oh my gosh, a revelation with .
implications for the entire family.
You think when I .

Michael has a family nickname extra.
Yeah, I call that like every day you're good OK next.
would you grow up here .
a mile away from my house? wow.
Yes, always. I like.
great. I mean, I was able to walk to school and we had lots of sports and and sister fighting and sharing clothes and all that good stuff.
She's a working mother and wife and scheduled juggler for her husband, the soccer coach and three kids who all play soccer.
Have you taken new P. E close?
Yes, he is a socket. Mom.
love you. Hey, love you.
But one thing .
was missing from .
her very full life. And Michael was obsessed with IT. Her mother was adopted, so there was no record or connection to her mother's biological side of the family. For Michael IT was a gaping hole.
I think, just from the time I was a little, you know, when you were in elementary school and you build family trees and I could only build like one side, i'd never knew who the other side of me was.
And while they are close, Michael mom was not willing to help solve the mystery.
SHE never had a desire to find her family. SHE had really good parents, but they passed away before as born Michael.
Father jim, on the other hand, had a family trait that was full and rich in details.
We had my answer, and uncles and I had tons of cousins.
Jim and Michael's mother divorced years ago. He is an army veteran who worked in the enforcement and sales. What do you like about raising cattle?
I love the smell. I love their domino. He runs a few .
head of cattle on the outskirts of yahya. And I was eying a predictable retirement of leisure and gram kids. How would you .
care to use your life? Now I was blessed because i've got got in IT. We go to church, we pray night, our kids go on the churches. And IT can be any Better to Michael.
Her father's family history had not been issue. As best you could tell, all had been accounted for.
Me.
when did you decide you wanted to get a DNA test?
Probably a couple years ago but I was just a little bit nervous um because my mom is adopted and I was really sensitive to .
her feelings, busy with her job as a recycling coordinator, the idea of a DNA test to learn about her mother's side of the family, but occasionally come up with one of mics co workers woman who was adopted, encouraged Michael to get that done.
So I sent away for a DNA kit and I had the kit for maybe a couple months actually before I actually test IT because I I was nervous. My Michael workers are kept. And did you do IT? How can we have have done your test? And so finally.
I did IT.
How do you do so? You just been in a tube. And four to six weeks you have your results started showing you all your second and fourth cousins. And now you has been a year and half, and I have over eleven hundred fourth cousins or sooner. That match me just on this one test.
But the initial results of the search left Michael wanting more what he did not have was the genetic trail to her mother's birth parents, or any other close relatives on that side. Who did you think might be out there?
My family, for my mom's side, I think a huge part of me just wanted to know, like, hey, when I celebrate same Patrick .
day and my irish, frustrated and eager to learn more, SHE widened her search. SHE sent her DNA information to another company with two million different profiles in their database. DNA is like a history book written into yours cells.
And only now, in the beginning of the twenty first century, are we learning how to read the book. What does this one do? So here we're extracting DNA will extract bena.
Greenspan found that a company family tree, DNA. He explains, genetic matches are measured by something called santamaria. The higher IT goes the closure, the matches. That's exactly right. So for example, between a parent child, there's about thirty three hundred cena Morgans and common Michael center DNA to family tree IT didn't take but a few hours for the computers to find a match.
You know, I share the story with people. I get just as excited again.
The evening after Michael sent in her DNA SHE remembers being restless.
I decided that night that I was onna check. I was in my bed and got on my ipad and was looking. And I saw a match.
match. No second cousin twice removed. The edge .
online immediately started rushing through me and I just like, oh my gosh, i've I found my mom parents. That's where my head went immediately like, and there are still alive.
Michael told no one that night, but show the results to her friend at work, the one who encouraged her to do the DNA search.
She's like, oh, Michael, there's an email address. Google the email address. I google the address.
And is this nonprofit group that helps email asians from vietnam? And I thought, what I thought about, I like this is a scare. But like, how do they do? Like my mom .
always songa.
Thousand thousand, yes, right now. Yeah, then we will send you you know a million later.
But this was no scam. The group was a non profit organization called emigrations without borders.
And it's helping people from vietnam. B left um children from the vietnam war. I was like, oh my I we'd both like look at each other and like good bse. I'm getting them right now.
And like, oh my gosh, Michael and her coal worker had found something big.
When we come back for Michael and her family, the first in a life changing string of surprises.
I was just like, what is this?
Is this real? A revelation ation triggering a remarkable .
conversation? I can hear her crime, and then I star crime.
It's a new day in yaka, washington, an area where snow capped mountains crowned the horizon. This is home to Michael hints who made the discovery of a lifetime.
There's no way that's that's not real, that IT really happened.
What do you know? And the initial disbelief came for good reason. Her DNA match was closer than anything he had ever dreamed of.
Michael sent a note to the mysterious email address included in her D. N. A results, a cautious .
note without giving out too much information. But I I knew to know what .
they're about.
saying that we had a matches and then I had to wait. IT was like, twenty four hours. IT was a long time. I was like, the the next day I would just like, oh my gosh, what is this?
Is this real? Michael DNA test had hit a bull side, her mind raced, where her mother's biological parents alive. Was there an ant or an uncle or a cousin? Was this the news? He had your and four, the man with the answer was Jimmy Miller, who lives in spoken washington.
Where were you born on? Miller runs in organization called emigrations without borders. He sends DNA is to the economists who believe they were fathered by an american.
How many emigrations do you think are still in vietnam? About five hundred. Only five hundred, five hundred. One of those five hundred was the match Michael hints had just discovered.
What is IT like for you when there's a real connection to be, is just like a win a lot, win a lot of the news Jimmy had to share would change lives. He reached out to Michael, to teller. SHE had a half sister halfway around the world in vietnam, her name lin talk.
and he's talking to me about, yes, this is, this is what's, you know, this is who he is. This is her story. We did a DNA test like four years ago. I would have been over four years that he had taken her DNA test and .
before he knew IT, jimmie said, I can get in on the phone.
I'll be the translate because i'm sure he doesn't speak english and like fifteen minutes later he calls me, he did like a party line and he's calling viet not woke them up and I can hear him telling them that he found me and then I can hear her crime and then um I saw crime and I was just like, oh my god, I was like she's just been waiting for us all these years and. And so they were saying he was telling them that this is your sister Michael, and this is.
this is your sister land. Yes, there was a bull eye from Michael DNA test a sister. But the big surprise the match was on her father's side of the family tree IT never .
once cross my mind that I would be anybody from my dad. I did. I know everybody, right? No, I just didn't even think I automatically assumed .
that would be for my mom. In tears, Michael had a question for her new found sister.
I asked her if he wanted to know anything about her dad.
and lin just said on, I just wanna know the photo of my that so I wanted to know how my dad look like that, then said, and when then said that I just tears my eyes, you started cry. Yes, stock to cry. For Michael, everything was coming into focus. Her father was a vietnam veteran, and IT was now obvious there was more to his war story than anyone had known.
I told her, you know, he's a wonderful man. He he was in vietnam for the war. and.
Was just really emotional. I mean, and I could just hear her crying. He didn't even talk still.
Sten Michael knew what he had to do next, but he wasn't sure how. You know that you have a sister in vietnam, you've spoken with your sister and vietnam. You've cried together. Yes, on the phone morning going to tell your father.
Coming up, Michael shares the stunning news .
with jim .
for this father, a shock that will leave him shaken to the core. When data continues.

Now when did you call your father?
So I called him the next day. I just thought I have to do IT, and I don't know if i'll get up the courage.
Michael height said, just learned he had a sister in now sitting in a grocery store parking lot. He knew he had a call the mic.
I was like, hey, dad and I have been doing that geneology stuff and he's like, yeah, yeah, did you find anything and I said, yeah, I think I found something. I think I found a sister look like you like loud.
Do you remember that .
phone call? Yes, he explained that he had done a DNA and that there was a lot of hit, and I just kind of check.
And I think he thought maybe he was like my mom for a previous relationship. That's to my head I said, dad, she's yours and he says, what? And I said, she's feta and then he just like, started cry he couldn't like, hardly talk is like, what are you saying?
Jim was suddenly thrust back in time to a place he preferred to forget.
The american military command today confirmed reports that united states dead in the vietnam war are not total, more than thirty thousand.
The year one thousand nine hundred sixty eight, the vietnam war was at its peak. And so we're protests against IT. Yet many Young americans, like jim hints, volunteered, deserve. He was a, when did you decide to join the army?
I graduated may of sixty eight, and my cousin and I and a friend decided we were going to go to the buddy program. And we went in. In november of sixty eight.
Hints was first stationed in germany, but soon came the orders to go to vietnam.
You're wondering, know what, what's going to be like? And I going to come back.
The Young G. I was assigned to a security unit for an army road building crew northeast of sagon.
When I moved into the security betune, there was probably about twelve guys in the bonker that I was that, and I think there was four, five, what we call those girls doing their laundry and staff. And after a couple of weeks, the girls come up to me and said that they had a girlfriend. I would like to come work. Would I like the to have a house girl?
He said, jet, her name was tony ton. And SHE worked for jim doing things like laundry in picking up around the bunker. But their relationship was also one of affection.
These are pictures of tainted with jim from his grab book. She's wearing a necklace he bought for her. James family had all seen the pictures. Tani was no secret wearing in love with her.
I would say yes and no, because I knew there was a time when I was going to go home. I tried not to be, but yeah, I will probably died for if so we tried to hurt .
was at a sexual .
relationship. IT turned out that way. One friday night, the ti told me that the the congress becoming into their their area and to resupply, which they are just go in and breaking the houses or business ses or whatever .
jim told tty SHE could stay with him on the base war brought them together that weekend. But not long after that jim was sent home. He left the tnm and twenty behind that had ever occurred to you in a million years that you might have a child that, no, not, you know, not to know. Michael says her father was truly Stuart.
He's like, wait a minute, can be mine because I was at home and so then he started doing the back dating like, oh my god, he would have been maybe like six, eight weeks, maybe. SHE didn't even know at the time that he was pregnant.
Michael asked her dad if he would take A D. N. A test too.
He didn't DIY one.
He did two, though I didn't take long for jim to wonder if they were necessary. Michael and then swapped photos. And Michael sent a picture of lean to her father. And in IT he saw himself.
I saw her teeth were like mine. There was a space on a near cheek boy.
And I said, ky, believe that's .
probably my daughter.
His DNA results then confirmed IT jim heights had fathered a child when he served in vietnam. Jim also learned, sadly, that tune, the girl he left behind had died just a few years after they'd been together. Their daughter lin was raised by her grandparents, who pretended he was adopted.
Jimmy Miller explained to the heights what lens life had been like and how difficult IT was after the war to be an emirates. N when we go out, the people name, uh, have half and go back to your country. Es, sometime we go out, and all kids through rockers were being us. For jim, the pain was compounded, first not knowing about his daughter at all, and then learning what a hard life he had to endure.
I just feel sorry for that. You had to go over forty plus years without a mother, then i'd be terrible.
Jim and his second wife, Jerry, have a blended family that includes five daughters, their husbands and a parcel of grandkids. Jerry about melt IT when jim holder, his news.
he had his own kids and I had my kids and we raised them all together.
you know but um when we .
thought out about land, he said that man was our daughter together because you know his kid to have them mom and I know they they seem as a step mom, but lyn has not had a mm that he was four and so I was very special to me to think that there could be our daughter together that we never had but while .
behind is welcomed to the discovery of a daughter, a sister in vietnam, lyn had a request Jerry wasn't sure red jim could fulfill.
I don't think he realizes, like some of the painted Carries, like from the war.
lynn wanted jim to come to vietnam, a place to which he vowed he would never return.
coming up an extraordinary journey as the hints travel thousands of miles and a few last emotional feet to meet land.
偶尔 也 被骗。
So what else missing?
You need a picture .
because .
I don't need IT.
How do you pack for a trip you thought you never wanted to take? If you are, jim and Jerry hints IT is with purpose and no small amount of trepidation.
and had forty six years to like, dream about, but her parents might be like. And so i'm afraid we can live up to those big dreams.
Their lives have changed since learning jim fathered a child in. And all the time since you serve there, did I ever occur? E, you to go back? No, never.
But this is because of James, the economise daughters plea. He and Jerry are traveling to the other side of the world. Some people would feel like the florida pulled out from underneath. I don't have the sense that you feel that way.
She's my blood. And and when my job is to .
take cover, jim's daughter .
Michael, with DNA test set off, the whole chain of events .

gets them on their way. The circumstances of this journey, a far cry from the last time jim hints fluid vietor, back then he was on his way to war.
Thank you. So this .
time he's on his way to meet the child he never knew he had.
I'm not gonna say why did that happen sooner or why did that happen now? It's happening, guys with us and we're full.
After three flights and more than twenty four hours of travel. They had straight to a hotel to meet lin. The drive across town through midday traffic reveals a modern day con now called how chemin city, where for a Young and ambitious population, the war is not even a memory. Jim has had weeks to think about what he first wants to say to his daughter teter.
And I says a real close.
He's anxious. He so wants to get this right.
I don't know if it's the right word, but I was going to say what I think is sorry and that .
was in my i'm sorry, sorry for not being a father to her waiting in a hotel. Lava across town is lin by her side. Her husband, key and perhaps most excited of all their seventeen year old daughter, new.
The van arrives, and within seconds, jim and his wife Jerry are crossing the street with only one thing on their minds to embrace their new found family. New can't wait, and it's quickly engulfed in Jerry. Well, jim makes A B line for line.
I don't love you. Space and time evaporate in an incident months before these people were unknown to each other, yet tears and emotions flow freely. Tears of joy, to be sure, but also some tears of sorrow for time lost.
I've been waiting forty five years, lin says, hugging the father he always hoped to find. For reasons only people in their circumstances could understand. They seem reluctant to let go.
The ties that bind formed quickly, yet language remains a barrier. Lyn speaks no english, key speaks some, and IT is left to seventeen year old, knew to be the family interpreter. Ask your mom if this seems real. This seems like it's actually happening, or is this a dream?
And the dream comes.
True for jim, my. baby.
Back in the ahma, Michael and other family members got updates with videos jim and Jerry posted to facebook. What are you seeing?
IT was no a drunk in rush. You know, we're like, are they there yet? And we see them like crossing the street, and we are all like online at the same time. And if I was just crazy and then you're trying and felt like we were just right there.
This is James len's first family dinner was setting a rooftop restaurant in hot men city. The modern skyline provides a glittering backdrop, and american pop music echoes up from the streets below.
where. There nose.
well, there is much of the past to discuss. There is a higher prior lean. And her family want to emigrate to the united states as soon as possible.
He wants to spend the rest of her life close to the father he never had. And jim, Jerry now want that to to make that happen, they'll need the help of this man. Johna lawyer ran the VISA section at the U.
S. Consulate in vietnam when we visited primarily in vietnam. Uh, life has been an up pill kine from day one.
Think about IT, a born in a world torn country, raised in an empower one bleed at school for looking different. Back in the one thousand and eighty images of levan min are disabled, homeless. Emirate's boy captured the america's attention, prompting the U.
S. Congress to pass the admiration homecoming act, allowing for those in vietnam fathered by usg to immigrate to the united states in the initial years. Appearance alone could get you to the us.
Now the bar is higher. Much hier DNA evidence between an emerge and their father and even they're sibling is the gold standard. Lyn has that, but paperwork and documentation from her childhood is spars.
And sometimes inaccurate corrections take time. Jim, Jerry want their vietnam's family to come home with them. But for now, they must wait for the U. S. consults. decision.
We're hoping that they would give a smaller timing of when then then her family can come to amErica .
because we .
really have no idea at this point.
In the meantime, there is an emotional journey to complete to James .
past coming up at the next stop, something jim just wasn't prepared .
for that I was that .
when deadline continues.

A few days later, lenin, her family, threw a big block party for jim and Jerry, complete with carioca. In the emotional rush to meet his daughter and her family and the rush to get permission for them to move to the U.
