Not far from the tourist shops that ring the thunder in falls is a long, quiet path that snakes through the city of good neighbors. You collect Green, sweet and sometimes deadly. And I just .

remember they're being a cent of of fear.

Once there was a Young family in buffalo, new york, a transported chemistry professor named Stephen diver, his four children and her mother, his wife, john diver, she's been a runner .

for a long time and and he was just trying to stay in shape, he said. It's a great stress reliever, something you do for yourself, something you do to give you a Better perspective on things.

Her older sisters remembered growing up with her, the baby of the family back insult lake city .

SHE had a very strong personality. SHE knew what he wanted, and SHE went after .

IT and what Jones diver wanted on the fine september morning in the year two thousand six, was to see the children after school drop the Youngest one of daycare and drive down to her favorite run long path, the wine's declarations. One of the safest towns in america, the bike path they call him.

I had asked at a safe place and he says, so it's really safe. People go there all the time. He says, there's a wooded area.

I don't go up to the woods era. I always turn around and come back. We ve talked about as someone tried to grab us, what would happen and SHE says, so I D give him a .

fight and nice saints, all I would.

And then I looked to nice, but what about your little kids? And SHE SHE just said, full still would have to take care. But when we laughed off, that was the last time I spoke to her person.

September twenty nine, the day jone divert disappeared. IT was later in the day when Stephen diver learned Jones had not picked up his son from daycare. He called nine one one.

I'm gone because my wife didn't show up to take up my child at high school. And i'm concerned that you might be at how much you might be clasico somehow. Your new sir, my name, Stephen diver, i'm her husband. And then he called IT again when he realized where his wife had gone.

So I called before .

about my wife thing in the back past and SHE is somehow out there. SHE he has and returned. SHE has been returned. Okay, but she's probably late injured.

Red, I saw her vehicle at the bike path and we going to drive out on the bike path and find her because she's out, out there. He told the deputies. He searched all up and down.

The bike path went far longer than the usual two. And I have miles. His wife usually ran. In fact, he said he saw her.

S, U, V, A full bottle of water on the console at the entrance of the background, which was strange, because when they went back to look for the car, IT wasn't there. They found a three miles away yet. Jone's husband claimed up and down that he didn't move in. A dozens of law enforcement officers are coming the clearance bike path tonight looking for a missing mother, and it's been nearly thirty .

hours since the.

The news of the mysterious s disappearance of a middle class professor wife, a mother of four, was no small thing in Butler.

very big deal, and is a search comments.

Charlottes beat the bushes up and down the eight mile stretch of the bike path. They cover the area with a and search dogs, but they could not find a trace .

of jone diver. And we really did no idea.

And arch was called SHE wasn't to be found. But of course, he was two days after .

he went missing a another before from car rent has been found dead.

A volunteer had joined a search party organized by Jones husband. The volunteer called out the alert, found the body. Alan, presently then a detective with the era county share self, has arrived. Soon after.

he was about suddenly any feet from the bike payer and another twenty feet into the brush.

and she's been strangled. LED.

is that what? IT, that's correct.

Yes, he was. But there was something significant, a potential clue in what was not done by the murderer.

the manner which he was closed. He had not been raped.

In fact, there was no trace DNA evidence found on her body. Nothing to indicate her attacker. The next step seemed obvious. Since IT wasn't a sex related killing, investigators started looking at the people closest to john diver. How CoOperative was .

the husband was not extremely cool at all.

You know, when people don't CoOperate quite often that way.

that suspicion that that's correct. And ultimately, his response in the whole things a little different than I used to.

Why had jone's s. SUV been moved, apparently after her death? What did her husband's Stephen? no. And why wasn't he CoOperating? The investigator suspicion soon leaked into the press devines questions Stevens culpability, ninety two percent of cases were a woman is a killed IT turns out that is a male that he knew, knew, knew well, not right.

And a lot of families don't know, you know, what's going on within marriages and a and things and and you find out later that that that could be the case. We certainly didn't think so. And we we love Steve and the and the family.

So when this notion that hit the public that maybe should look at, they just seem you what little less .

yeah we didn't think that was right.

But then the investigation seemed to stall and far away in salt. Like city Jones family waited for news and waited what was rather hopeless.

Less at first, too, as they just had no clues on what IT happened. He was just there, and they didn't know nobody had seen anything. They didn't have anything to go on, you know. And IT was just A A terrible feeling .

then IT was october, and the early storm blanket at buffalo under two feet of snow, the hope of finding zone diverse killers seem to be buried to. There was just one thing that all along had bothered, detective Bruce ani, something about the way Jones was killed.

double ligature Marks around her neck.

I've got a feeling going on. His gut reminded him, eric have an old case that had hunted buffalo for more than twenty years, the bike path rapist, a man tied to nine rapes, including two murders. Twenty two year old Linda yelm, A U.

B. Student, was sexually attacked and struggle. But IT couldn't be. After all, Jones diver had not been raped.

And besides, the last that heard of him was way at nineteen ninety four. The case has never been solved. The man was probably dead by now or in jail.

There were millions to the bike paths rapist, but we were not. He absolutely sure the time, whether was a copycat or was at just another homicide.

IT was in november, six weeks after Jones murder. When a strange DNA result came in, IT came from a spot, a spec, a wife of something, human swap from the steering wheel of Jones S. U.

V, three miles away from where her body was found. Someone had been in there and that someone was not Stephen diver. So what checking information is that this case is tied to other known cases, the zone diver murdered, tied by DNA evidence to the bike path rapist. The new evidence cleared. Stephen diver, of course. But more astonish was rare, that microscopic piece of DNA would its powers of revelation, even then staring unseen fates in a prison so far away, but not yet fates, have a way of brewing for a while at the moment, I jumped out hard and clear with something truly morbid. Jones diver had been killed on someone's anniversary.

That was the data. The lindy's en death, which was an amp's back in the .

nineties after twelve years of hybernation, was buffalo's bike path rapist announcing his return.

Buffo was a giant ones whose rail system, the second biggest in the world, hold steel one way, finished goods back again. But times change, promise fades. Buffalo's railways languish and became a modest resurrection bike, pares miles and miles of them, winding from the city through places like delivery park and clarence and safe, secure.

And her now haunted by a man they called the bike path rated. And now, like some almost forgotten ghost, after a twelve year absence, he was back. Authorities called the similarities haunting. Like to Charles viewing is a forensic psychologist of the university of buffalo.

He consulted campus police nineteen ninety when the bike path rape is killed for the first time, and now said viewing, I believe that was a way of saying to the police, it's me. I'm back. You still haven't caught me.

So now the old failed investigation cough back to life, and the cops reopened the frustrating old file that puzzled LED them from more than twenty years. They had the assailant's S D. N. A. Yes, but he was still out there, working in the .

past for a long time.

In buffalo, there is a statue of David, and if the story is true, IT was cast as a direct copy of the original by Michael Angela. The bike path runs right passed IT. The highway just beyond that is a very public place. And yet that is where more than twenty years before he killed zone diver, police believe the bike path rapist struck for the first time.

the forty four, a woman who is jogging, raped and strangled and strangled in such a way that almost every blood vessel in our eyes was burst orrible ally strAngely and .

left on the pad remarkably. That first rape with you and one nine hundred eighty six survive, as they all did at first. All of the women attacked in the morning in broad daylight.

vt. M number two was a seventeen year old girl. He was raped and strangled as the double of this.

a red man. Then a detective was all too familiar with the bike path. Rapist resume from her work at the buffalo police sex offence unit.

The next victim was a Young girl, and railway tracks in buffo raped and strangled. The next victim was also in buffalo. IT was another Young girl, the same railroad tracks.

And there were more survivors to find.

he told me he put down on the passenger side of the floor.

Denis Foster still Carried ligature scars on her neck when we spoke with. There are.

almost twenty years later, put the world my neck and just held IT. And he told me if I moved there, I screamed he would.

The rapist took her down to a wooded creek sign, force her down on a rock, stripped off her clothes.

And that's when he write me. And he strangled means and left me there.

Remember getting tired, I black out .

and I was unconscious when .

he regained conscious. Now he says he stumbled naked into the road where a neighbor saw her and call police.

He left me for dead because he didn't want me to identify him.

Six rate victim survived. And then on september twenty nine, nineteen and ninety, the violence escalated. The bike paths rapist became a killer. Lady yale's body was found yesterday along the other create bike path. And amhurst, the twenty two year old ub soft had been trading for a marathon. The bike path rate was killed again in one nine hundred and ninety two body, nine year old, major, major, a prostitute for body discarded beside the railroad track in one thousand and eighty four, he struck again, raping a fourteen year old on our way to school, raising the bike path, raps told. And nine rapes, including two, then you simply stopped, disappeared until two thousand six, when he killed jone diver on the anniversary of his first murder.

Ironically, heard disappearance and death came sixteen years to the day Linda yang was killed on the amr fike path.

Now there was a new urgency to solve the twenty year old case.

Police say they were dedicated a team to hunting down the rapist and killer.

So for the first time ever, four police departments, the buffalo police, the amherst police, the state police and the cody sheriff, joined in a special task force to find the man now tied to ten attacks, including three murders that spend more than two decades. The public demanded IT and who knew of the killer would strike again.

We started going backward, looking at cases that happened prior to the diver homicide.

Denis delano was a cold case specialist with the buff ble police department of the time. The detective had a bit of an attitude.

I have to turn over every IQ we can. We're going to exhaust all possibilities to get at the truth.

But every test force member knew this.

that the diver homicide was linked to the other crimes. If we saw that crime, you have to sound the rest.

For years, law enforcement had known that DNA evidence from seven rapes, and now three murders was left by one man. But who F, P, I profiler said the bike thrip was most likely worked at night. And what investigators now knew from modern DNA analysis was that the killer was of his panic origin.

But what struck delano was his M. O. The distinctive signature he left.

All of them had double legal to marked on their neck. A lot of them were, are told to put the night of of clothing over their face and eyes.

Then, as detectives work through the yellow old files, they know came across something very strange, a completely different file of rape cases, which occurred in the same place by the statue of David a few years before the first known attack by the bike path rapist.

We wound up making a spread sheet. All of the crimes, they're all basically identical. The only difference that we could find was that gun was used or a knife in the first set of crimes. And a literature was used for one hundred eighty six to two thousand six.

But here's what made that case so strange. Somebody else was convicted of the earlier crimes near the statue of David, a Young man named Anthony. Oppose the way, wouldn't be so Young anymore. You'd already been in prison for over two decades. And yet when delay, when the others compared the rapist crimes with those of composer, IT made the hair stand up on the back of .

their next no later to manor's m that the perpetrator was doing were all identical in .

in other crime.

When he was leaving, he told them the wait a certain month of time, uh, give me twenty minutes to to get away. Give me ten minutes to to leave. Give me five minutes.

Could there have been been two rapists with a virtually identical M O on bufo o bike path at one taken over and perfect limitation, the psychopathic crimes .

of the other IT was very uncanned the way they just in the match.

The jone diver murder tied by DNA evidence to the bike path rapist, the return of a ghost, one of the safe towns in amErica regnie. A cold case that are harder dairy county for more than two decades.

and if he's been able to self control. And so for twelve years before the next crime is somebody that's very cautious.

After twelve years of dormancy, the bike path rapist was back. We have an arrest in this case. But now a test force desperate to find the bike path rapist, discovered in some of its must, the old case file something very strange, a quite separate case of rape back in the middle, in this very same place, a woman jogging past the statue of David.

and suddenly a man came up behind her, put a gun to her head, dragged down into the bushes and raped.

Scott Brown was a reporter who covered the story three rates all around the same area. And the arrest of the apparent raves, a Young man named anti compose, I think the community kind of let out of side a capossela twenty nine, a sketch hani, who lived at home, one of the five children, marian Albert proposal, who spoke with us in two thousand and seven, Anthony was asleep, said barry. When the police came to get him.

he said, mother, what? I'll be back because you figured you and do anything. You know that he will be back.

Young composer was charged with three counts of very rule attacks with a knife and a gun. The prosecutor was able to put together a very solid case with the eight of one of the victims identified opposite from a photo lineup. Composite was convicted of two of the rape, sentenced to thirty five years in prison. And the prosecutor personally thank the eyewitness for her courage in coming forward.

I think the case shows that if you're the victim of a violent crime, particularly rape, that if you come into court and you testify that the jars will do the right thing.

the victim thought so too.

If enough women can get up there and say this has happened, then maybe rape in in sad amy and all these horrible crimes will become a thing of the P. S.

And the composer family watched as the authorities took at the off to prison. Oh my god, every day, every night, when you go to bed, you don't think of anything else. You think IT what's happened to your family every day? Married, prayed every week.

Albert and mary drove to whatever prison anthy was being kept in for twenty two years. Five times he came up for parole. Five times was denied. You know, they did offer a chance to get out. All we had to do was confess, Younger .

brother said, can you do IT because theyll get you out earlier he said, why should I tell him and I didn't do IT.

And now, after twenty two years, members of a task force looking for the bike path, rapist and killer, found himself staring at the composer case with brand new eyes.

The truth didn't seem to match the circumstances.

I just didn't the dive. why? Because after proposed, you want to prison.

The rapes continued. These new ones couldn't have been him yet. They are in the same place, same M, O, horrifically .

strangled and left on the pad.

The detective was convinced IT had to come back to that little area right around the statue of David, in fact, to that bit of brush right on the side of the bike path. Supposedly there were two separate cases, but why hadn't anybody noticed that the location of the crime was exactly the same, that the method used was virtually identical? These crimes had to be the work of one man.

As investigators, you look for the truth, not necessary. The perpetrator, you're looking for exactly what happened. What is the truth of that situation, that crying um and that lead you to the perpetrator? Now want you know the truth.

You can pretty much figure out who did watch when in this case nothing seemed to add up and we check kept going over and over again and and I just kept coming up the same way. There is something wrong here. And, uh, again, as an investigator, the pieces don't fit.

You just keep investigate. That's what you do. You do. They do IT.

Maybe the trial transcript would offers some solid evidence that those rapes attributed to oppose I were somehow different than the others.

but there was no other evidence linking him to those crimes other than I. Witney identification was .

IT possible proposal was missing dentists ed by a rate victim that he was sent to prison for crimes committed by somebody else.

That's that's when we took a right out, the ata correction, the solid interview, one IT didn't take long to talk on to know I wasn't the type of person that can do hinz crimes.

Their job was to catch a rapist and killer joe diverse killer. Not a fret about an old resolved case. Still, they put together what they learned about composer and took you to the district attorney, and in my experience, in jail, but not likely to react very positive.

Clark was .

the district determination. Then he told the detectives, there wasn't much as office could do. The law requires hard evidence. The statute is very, very clear as to watch required in order to overturn a jury verdict. So detectors follow their instincts. Perhaps rape kits, slides of evidence from the opposition case stored in the volts of the medical center would have traces of DNA. And that might exchange act composes.

and we had hoped, kind of medical set our heads on slides, and we're told there was .

no such thing, no DNA, no proof of anything. And Anthony opposite stayed in prison.

我想 一 meanwhile.

in the search for the bike path, rapist detectives seem to be dime.

Now we have a serial killer rapist out there and an innocent man in jail. So we all the sudden, we found ourselves in the middle of two investigations.

And that's about the time they discovered in the old composer file a clue.

And I said that this is our guy.

In the month after a Jones diver was murdered by buffalo bike path rapist, the task force manhunt produced two bizarre discoveries in a case file that have been gathering dust for more than twenty years. One, the possibility that Anthony composer, a convicted rapist, was an innocent man, and to a clue, buried in the old composition file that never quite been track down.

He was invoking a rape many years ago in the rape victim, impossibly, in IT was in this, the opposition focus, possibly the expected Anthony composer of that.

Did that rape occur?

One thousand hundred and eighty one?

And what was the clue tucked away in the file, a license number from the back of a car, given the police by a woman who reported to been raped by the car driver.

we came across the fact that the victim had spiteful her attacker two or three days after the attack. SHE was pretty sure at the time I was her attacker.

SHE took down the license number at the time. Way back in one thousand nine hundred eighty one, the owner of the car had an but now when detectives checked again, he turned out the owner had been hiding a guilty secret all those years. He wasn't in the car, but someone he knew was.

And he said, detected looking for me said, yes, I am. He says, is this about something that happened many years ago? Yes, and I didn't even pride supply because my nepal timeo sanchez was driving the vehicle.

Sanchez, remember, DNA had revealed the bike path rapist was most likely of his spanning characters. So could this sand chips be the man they were searching for? First, some investigative grunt work. A mistake now would be disastrous.

We took his panic names that were previously investigated narrow those down through a state police resources. Which ones were arrested prior for prostitution? Because FBI did a profile years ago and said that most likely the suspect frequent prostitutes.

There were eighty four names on the list, and one of them was a tmo, sanchez.

And I said, this is our guy.

Was he this alt. timeo. Sanchez had been arrested twice in buffalo for solicitating prostitutes, but that was years and years ago. Now detectives decided not to interview sanchez unless they can find hard evidence .

to connect him to the rapes on the bike path. We decided to DNA3, decided all of us and said, you know, if we knock at the door and say, hey, can we have a DNA sam? He's going to say, see a later goodyer.

And now he's going to look at over shoulder. IT was a saturday night when they got their chance. Sanchez took his wife out on the date to a restaurant that was the moment to find that hard evidence, DNA evidence. Investigators asked the waiter at the restaurant not to touch the couple's glasses. When they left.

he left a glass and a napkin.

But would the glass or a napkin, you would enough DNA for some kind identification? Investigators rushed the glass in the nap into the forensics lab, and then the weight began.

So now everyone's at the office. All the chiefs are there, all the entire task force, everyone from ams, the state police, the share of department. IT was like waiting for a baby to be born. We were literally covered around the phone.

and IT was him. And now we .

all know who this guy is. We got to figure what to do the next .

morning with january fifteen and two thousand and seven l tmo sanchez locked out after his night shift, got in his car and drove away. Squad cars pulled in beside them, and sanchez just stopped by the side of the road he did not resist. It's the break.

The long enforcement and people living around the clearance Spike path had been waiting for. The official announcement was approves. Understandably colorful.

the monster has been known as the light that right is .

has been taken into company, and then gradually became a horrific surprise. The DNA link sanchez crimes, beginning years before anyone had even heard of the bike path rapist, beginning in fact, years before anthy opposer, still sitting in prison, was convicted of two of those very rapes. Centres, forty nine years old, was charged initially with two counts of murder.

In the second degree, he pleaded not good day, and in the hours and days after his arrest, all of buffo watched, both horrified and astonished as they learned about alt meo sanchez, who really was he? Was that actually possible? A man of his standing and reputation could have committed such awful crime. A great many people in western new york can relax the bike path.

Rappers has been .

taken into custody. This pressure off the street in the city of good neighbors, IT turned out the suspected bike path rapist stand killer was just that, a good neighbor, or living among them, he is a ten tious guy.

The most wonderful family, we just love them dearly. They have just spend the best neighbours anybody could want a beautiful wife, beautiful children, two boys. And l has always just been so gracious and kind.

IT was simply beyond imagining our timeo sanchez has accused of raping and killing women for decades, was a regular guy who lived the quiet medical class life .

in the buffo suburbs. Red is murdered was a house away.

Forty nine year old delt mo sanchez had owned his own house for years. He held also for many years a steady, respectable job working the night shift at a brast factory.

Like any family on any suburban street, he is always the first one that signed up for the know charity things and and volunteer to help out you talk.

Sanchez's families police is wife of twenty five years, had no idea, not a clue, until the headlines and news reports brought their whole world crashing down. SHE had no suspicion, nothing.

No, he was absolutely dumb founded. They were going on vacations. Their sons were both grown up. They were spending more time together. She's em very Normal.

How could you be the man finally arrested after more than twenty years of brutal attacks, rape, murder? The ugliest of human behaviors turned out to be a married church, going dead. A literally coach, some of whose players called him with affection.

Uncle l, the Better he acted, the more model of citizens he was, the less likely IT was that he would ever get quite. Forensic psychologist Charles viewing was among the few who were not surprised. They don't wear signs.

I'm a killer. Uh, most of them are fairly ordinary people is investigated. Search for information to back up the D N.

A evidence. They were astonished to discover that in the evening of the very day he allegedly murdered joe d. Sanz was attending a party with his wife.

That's the kind of person we're dealing with when we talk about a psychopath, somebody who can commit a crime like this. And hours later, it's miles and miles aways as if IT never happened. When the investigators interviewed some tires, they were confronted, they said, by a wall of self control and denial.

He was dancing a lot. I think he was properly preparing for years.

and he didn't crack.

No, he did not create. But with that.

all the DNA evidence linking sanchez to those seven rape cases and three murder, there was little chance he was going to walk, then distrust the turney. Frank Clark told us in two thousand and seven in the public eye, when you have this DNA, which takes the probabilities to the tens of billions, I mean, the public just assumes DNA that him guilty case over.

And the citizens of buffo and the suburbs of western new york let out a collective sigh of relief, or at least almost all of them did. Denise Fosters thought on T. V.

the new showers face? I just .

like .

when in the town, I know with him and the tall.

flooded right back. How do you .

know I remember the face .

that clear?

yes. Did to bring .

IT all back to? Yes.

when we spoke to her .

twenty two years later, denies told us the terror still linger, the rock, the rape, the strangulation, the blackout, the naked, stumbling for help, but hadn't gone away. Even the physical scars were still there around turn neck.

I've had nightmares about .
