states and situations denied on deadline. You looked into his eyes.
did you know to me? His eyes were called, like, what is he hiding?
Did I shoot my wife? And muscle? no.
The informal case of alex murdoch. Now, a whole new look at the story. You think, you know, was there point?
That's always cern. Every case .
investigators speak out in their first and interview we had over eighty ages, two hundred years ago.
we had drones, had airplanes, the phones tell us a story. This is that .
aha moment is.
Never shared, he was .
videos never broadcast before. My mother and brother had been shot and killed.
Just total panic. But I think you could be possible.
That can be, what did you think when you saw your form a boss and friend and hand us? I cried because .
that's not the person that I need.
Alex made the comment.
You know what a tank where we weave?
He moved that web so tight, but we real IT perfectly untangle that web.
You're inside this heartbreaking mystery like never before. I'm less or hold. And this is deadline.
Here's craig melin with the murdoch murder inside the investigation.
The air downs' feels different before IT rains vg. Heavy armanus. The night of june seventh, twenty twenty one, was like that the colting county corner says mark t.
Murder and her son paul. Both investors were still piecing together a motive for the test of paul and Maggie murdoch. IT was a night that would change so many lives, including this month, agent David owen, who would drive straight into the storm during .
that investigation, that the only time that I was truly alone was when I was in mca.
Leave in the office and go in hole, or from home to the office, I go home and i'm just sitting much here trying to unwind and i'm like, what in a this? What else going going to go back? Who else going going to talk to and wake up in the middle night? I need to do that report, mentally exhAusting every day, twenty one months, june seven of time, I got the phone call until the jury came back with the I work.
don't IT for more than .
two years now, the alex murdoch case has dark inside the headlight. You may think you've seen and heard IT all, but you've never seen this today. For the first time, the team of investigators that crack the case speaks out, telling details. Only they new. You'll hear about their dramatic discoveries.
I knew when I heard his voice, I knew I was really excited because I can prove then I let was lying .
to me the moments they change the case.
I'm nine nine present. sure. That was mister, like talking.
Well, keep poking knife. So you pull the poking knife and you can, you bend down and and we look at the puncher and we put our knife up to IT. And IT just seems .
to match the moments that nearly broke them.
My mother passed away the day I was set to testify, took that afternoon to collect myself. Think about how we're going to proceed.
And they are cat and mouse game with the most daunting adversary they've ever faced.
Did you kill magi? I kill him.
Now that response struck me like, wow.
if he was willing to steal from those people, there is no telling what he would do to his own family.
Plus, just today, I like murdoch back in court. I agree .
that I wrongs took all of that money you on and did all of those crows.
While allegations of jury time brings all what .
we had filed today, supported by swarm testimony of jurors, is that the clerk of court and improper private communications with .
the jurors and the judge steps down. It's the story you really don't know from the only people who can tell. Did you know in that moment that the case had been .
blown wide open? Oh, yes.
South CarOlina, low country, is a watery landscape, often admired for its beauty, but its tiny towns and tightened working class communities are some of the poorest in the state. The murdoch family has lived a very different life in the river houses, beach houses and format states, while managing the legal affairs of generations of their low country neighbors. You actually knew the murder twenty years?
yes.
Belonged to beats. Simpson met alex murdoch when he sought his help on a friend's legal case. He later I heard her to work as a house sky at his home known as mozel, a sprawling seventy hundred eager property in the low country where he lived with his wife, Maggie, and two sons, buster in paul. So you would cook, yeah, you would clean, clean.
do laundry, whatever SHE needed, run irons for her.
Blanka became a part of the murdoch family fall, and especially close to alex wife Maggie, who sung said could be a little stand office. What was SHE like .
when he was just me and her? IT was like he was a totally different person and he was in guarded SHE would joke around SHE had this loud laugh SHE would SHE was silly SHE loved to dance.
Blanket made dinner for the murdoch s on the faithful night of june seventh, twenty twenty one. Why did you cook dinner that night instead of Maggie?
Maggy was at the doctor's appointment and he had a nail appointment.
had a yeah.
So he said, i'm running laking you go here and cook w's, I get sure.
Blanka left dinner on the stove and head IT out. How could you imagine that life as he knew that would never be the same? Because just after ten pm. That night.
I have alex and.
Seven that his wife and child was shot, everyone for you most about.
he told the dispatcher he come home to find Maggie. Paul shut near the dog, kills some distance from the main house. There was anyone else worse .
to be your health? No, mam, please. Here.
when deputies from the nearby colors and counting shares department arrived, they found the man who seemed to strop.
I haven't seen as secure at a whisky fox whisky mine, both guns up to the head.
Hello, you.
look.
IT was a seriously scene. Fifty two year old Maggie and twenty two year old paul had both been shot multiple .
times close range.
The man who took over the crime scene that night was special agent David owen of the south airline of law enforcement division, known is that the chAllenges in his colleagues would face and the burden they would Carry were obvious right away.
I get there and realized that I was not like murdoch ious wife and son, the one who his father was, who his grandfather was, how prominent the law firm was.
That's a lot of weight. But investigators had no idea that night how much of a roller coasters the next two years would be was like.
what what is he hiding?
Why is he lying? Was their point in the investigation when you thought you might get away with IT?
That's always been a concern. We didn't know what we didn't know. That was a very bizarre case.
In the aftermath of a brutal double homicide, every moment in the investigation counts, and in this high profile case involving the area's most prominent family, police knew their every move was being watched more than that, every experience before.
That is paul man, his mother. That's one of the .
reasons why the state's most experienced investigators we're brought in immediately explained to me how much evidence you actually had had to process. Well, when we talk about the data that was involved, mark kill has been the chief of sled for more than a decade. He almost never gives interviews, but the Young precedented coverage of the murdoch case let him to talk to us about the work his team did.
You know, we start again in IT from media outside of south CarOlina. And the national media obviously was very thank you for answer the phone once or twice colony shaves, keep the chief on speed dial to help with their biggest and tough. And why would a local law enforcement agency ask the south come in, a law enforcement division to come in and take IT over? We created as an assist in ages.
I do as I mean, we're still a real state and we still have a lot of small counties that do not have the ability to have all techno expertise and manpower that they may need for some crime. Chief KO knew the murdoch family's reputation. They occupy a prominent position among law enforcement.
In fact, alex father, grandfather and his father practically wore the law in six low country. Country is as powerful prosecutors for nearly one hundred years. What was your impression of the family? And I would respect they were great prosecutions, and their influence didn't in with the elected office.
The murdoch's founded one of the state's most powerful law. S alex worked there as a personal injury, a ury. I didn't know already very well.
I knew who he was. Sled investigators took over shortly after they arrived on the scene. What becomes the first order of business trying to protect the crime scene? The senior special agent, David owen, has been in law enforcement for close to thirty years and worked with sled for nearly a decade. When he arrived around midnight, he had to order himself in a crowded crown.
So a prommers ing tape up EMS fire apartment was still, they are trying to set up lights to help us illuminate the scene, so that we investigated a lot of dogs barking.
The murdoch bowling seventeen hundred acre property included a cabin dog, kids, les, and even a landing strip. At what point does David and realize this was not going to be just a one of the mail murder case?
Pretty soon after I get there and realized that I was I like murdoch's .
wife and sun, but could knew the murdoch's reputation well at home and at the law firm. SHE met alex in nineteen ninety seven after he helped her friend on a case, he started working with them doing translations on cases with spanish speakers. SHE says he had away with people that made him at home anywhere.
He just had that personality he made you feel um. Like you were, you know, a good friend. He never treated me like hired help or anything like that. Never once.
And when alex eventually did need someone to help around the house and with his kids.
he, hey, Maggie is looking for somebody SHE needs help. Do you know of anybody? I total I said, hey, I do you. I said, I can help her. At first he was like, no, find me somebody else.
Yeah, he thought .
I was beneath you. I guess he did. I didn't .
see IT like that black got close to Maggie and pool.
Paul was a little clown, always the doctor in the house. Since he was little, he would just do silly things. He was just one of those kids that he was really hyper. And but he had a good heart.
He says Maggie had a great sense of humor and neck for southern traditions.
SHE was just funny SHE had this southern bell, you know, type thing also SHE knew when to SHE always wanted everything. Perfect attention to detail. I learned a lot from her.
David owen was hearing more about Maggie paul now, too. He examined in the crime scene what had apparently happened to to Maggie pull.
Both were shot in the head and that they were faced down.
As he took .
IT all live, he realized there were already problems at the crime scene with people walking in and out.
I've got crime sy experience have been an investigation since two thousand. Two, it's inevitable every time you won to a crime scene, you're bringing something in and or you're taken something out.
The fact that that you were not the first agency on the scene, did that put you at a disadvantage .
from the time the Normal one call came in until the time I got there? As two hours lost.
what about the sheer number of people who were there at? Is that something you would have changed?
yes. Why had I known that many people were that close to the scene? I would have push him back further, because you don't know what you don't know. You don't know what you have.
Investigators recovered two spent shotgun shell casings around polls body. His mom was killed with what appeared to be an assault rifle, but agent owen learned that no weapons were found near paul or magic, which met there was a killer or killers on the loose. He needed to talk immediately to the grieving husband and father, alex murdoch. What was that like? D, I approached .
and I produced myself, told him who I was and what I was there, and I said, I need to sit down, adult to you. And he understood .
alec .
got into the car with agent owns the whole would soon be asking.
what's going in all in your world that could bring something to like this upon your family?
In the early hours of june eight, twenty twenty one, south CarOlina, a law enforcement division special agent, David owen and ali murdoch, got out of the rain and into ow's dodged ranger.
And you go by alex.
Yes, I hate. They had to do this, I understand I totally understand.
Oh and showed me his portable set up mobile commands into if you yes or what do you do in here a little .
bit of everything when I mount in the field, do an interviews if there's no secure area or safe area to interview somebody um not use my car did you know you're .
recording yes so on my .
visor Normally put my body camera clip IT on there and I angle IT towards to seat the person on interviewing but .
to see t you're sitting in this is that same seat .
where he was I pulled up and I could see him and was bad .
and so began a test match that would consume agent owes every waking moment for the next year. What are you hoping to accomplish in that? In the first interview.
you know, assis, and was he having any trouble at the property had have been any burglaries, any attempted break, any large things in the area um that would give me something .
to try to track down and tell you and i'm overly suspicious of off the top of my head was there anything .
about his demeanor that that struck you during that that first conversation in in .
this car he was fiji. I mean, he was always moving around him, you know, cleaning his glasses, doing something with the sense.
But then alex said something that seemed like a big deal.
What comes to my man is my son paul was in a boat, rick, couple years ago.
Agent oin remembred that case. Well, the nights motorboat crash on nearby archers quake IT happened in february twenty nineteen. Paul murdoch and five of his friends had taken alex boat out, but on the way home, they crashed into a bridge.
Several passengers were hurt, and nineteen old mile beach was thrown from the boat. SHE was found dead. Almost a week later.
Paul was accused of driving drunk, causing the crash. His blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit. Murdoch family housekeeper blank up remembers the time after that crash vividly was the mood any different .
now IT was a little suber at times you know IT was you could see IT but they try to keep basically you know the spirits up I know Maggie struggle with IT um because that's her baby .
boy in April twenty nineteen, paul was invited on three counter boating under the influence, causing death and great bottling injury. He faced a maximum of fifty five years in prison. He pleaded not guilty, blanka says. The negative publicity and tiny hammonton made Maggie feel alienated.
I think that's where he was having a hard time with people that he did were friends, you know, good friends, all of a sudden morant there.
the boat reck had torched.
The murdoch's reputation in the hampton and community in the petrol car with agent o and alex now seem to be suggesting the double murder might be an act of revenge against paul.
There's been a you know, he was charged with being arrested for being a driver. There's been a lot of negative policy about that. There's been a lot of people on land just really know of any .
direct threats from people on the boat.
I don't know of any direct rates between any other people on the boat specifically, but I do think there's been a small amount of yep, yep, between a couple of but not recently.
about a half hour into the interview, alex other son burster .
arrived and wing finishes later.
The first interview was, so when you SAT with him in your car at first time, he was not prime suspect.
Number one. No, he was not any death investigation that i'm a part of or that I lead. I'd look at the person who found the bodies or body, and I look at those clothes to little seats, but they know most bottom.
oh, and still had enough to get started.
That gave me people to go out and try to interview people involved in the boat case, and just started try to brainstorm of what happened, what could have happened, who could have done this?
Now, members of sled would start spreading out. They had possible suspects to find.
So we had asked them, hey, you know paul's dead where we are.

As the sun rose over a colors and county on the morning of june eight, twenty, twenty one, the murdoch families housekeeper blanket was getting ready to go to work. Then alex murdoch called a call, he will never forget what you .
all you tell me they're gone. Be, they are gone. And I like SHE go back there.
Never did IT cross my mind that he was talking about them being dead. I did not associated with that and think he's like, no, be there did. And like, but .
it's a .
maggy power. Their dead bunker .
arrived at mozel later that morning. What did you see .
when I walk through the door, all the lights out? I left them off. He was just a weird chili feeling walking in there.
Agent David owen was still at mobile that morning, overseeing the crime scene. In the light of day, he realized the property would be a nightmare to search.
Seven hundred acres. A lot of that was swamp land. A lot of IT was planet pounds.
Plenty of places for killer or killers to hide weapons and other evidence.
You have two different ammunitions used to kill him. So mean, automatically you're going to think, okay. Well, possibly have two shooters. It's not very often that one shooter uses two different guns and a double murder.
O and deployed a large team of agents to search for suspects and .
gods everywhere that we could gain access to all that property that was searching. We searched. We had drones, nothing.
Meanwhile, at the house, alex friends and law partners helped other slight gents gather and inventory more than a dozen family guns to see if any were missing on the property shooting range. Investigators sifted through spin shelves to see if any of those match the ones at the murder ship.
In, scientists at the state lab started to analyze materials, found that the crime scene as they came in by now, senior special agent ryan Kelly had joined the team. He spent ten years as a detective and trusted before coming to sled in two and twelve, his job, locate some of the remaining survivors of that fatal boat crash. Why was making contacts with the picture on the the boat a priority early on?
It's important to identify individuals as soon as possible that .
mid hard questions for the parents of nineteen nine old male beach who was killed in the crash.
So we had asked them, hey, you know paul's dead where we are and and that was something that we didn't take lightly.
Agent Kelly and his fellow agents. I also collected DNA samples from all four survivors and some of their parents that included key and beverly cooks on Anthony. Is IT true that Anthony actually had to give .
a DNA sample? yeah.
Was he considered a suspect?
He was never considered a suspect. But all of the boat occupants, and I guess malay's family were, I don't know if.
would call IT a person of interest. Move on to body.
Yes.
that's what they told us. We were quick to locate the families. They were extremely gracious and helpful. They all met and gave us their wear bounce. But out of the incident, and we can't went from there.
How quickly were you able to eliminate those folks .
within a couple days?
But that didn't mean the scrutton of the boat, SHE was over far from IT. Did you know when the double murder happened that I was going to reopen this room, that he was going to bring renewed attention to the boat accident?
I mean, shortly after the shot wore off, yeah. I mean, what was coming?
why?
I always felt .
like the boat crash .
was going to bring something to light.
and they didn't take a law. The ripples of that boat crash had reached every member of the murdoch family. Never before seen video. Investigators would peel back the complicated layers of a family that was now at the center of a tragedy.
Yeah, there's still marry. They are still living together for that. They don't have any problems.
The murdoch family was very well known in the low country, of course, but not much beyond then magian paul or murder. And the murdoch's name was being broadcast.
A Y an update to a high profile double micio .
in learning diurbanu new details on mysterious double homicide in south america. All that attention put pressure on the investigation, but chief kill maintains his team tried to shut out the noise because this was a prominent family that was well connected. Did that affect the strategy behind the scenes at all from an investigative standpoint? IT didn't me, and IT has IT display IT.
Three days after a magan, paul were gun down. Investigators simultaneously, alex murdoch's brothers john in Randy Alice called them right after he called nine one one. These interviews are airing here for the first time.
This is john poland. They have been, have been shot, have been heard, and is just total panic. And he said, please get here passage.
You can get dressed quite as a good. Help could hardly talk. You could tell what I was really bad wrong.
IT was just a frantic, frantic phone call from him. But in those phone calls, and I think IT was in the first one, he said, mag. Ging a part have been shy.
Both brothers raced to the scene at night on the way they called in help from their friends in law enforcement.
Greg cook has wanted a fire chief enham ped, but most importantly, he's one to alex s very good friends, and so he knows the location. And so. I had to telling what happened. I started drive and obviously I was being good friend and chief and you say, and I said, I said, chief, I said, there's been something bad happened. I said, please meet me on the road and and help get me there.
Randy arrived first and spotted alone.
I found him that we just hope crated. And and then when we stop, I can see see a White sheet. And you mean I knew who I was under sheet were when a lot, but. I think you could be possible that could be little.
The brothers seem to still be in shop, of course, just jumped out IT this rand two.
We was very they were john Marvin told the investigators he had a close relationship with paul and the employment at his equipment rental business that summer.
Did you ever witness any any behavior .
that was bad behavior? No, no, no, no. That he's he.
He was an asset. He was a joy. I mean, customers love talk and doing.
but both brothers acknowledge pause role in the boat accident.
Paul made some bad decisions one night and leave LED to a grave set of circumstances. He put his friends in a bad, bad situation.
Still, they were quick .
to defending and when .
IT came to Maggie, the brother said the murdoch marriage was solid .
for that they don't have any problems.
Can you think of any relationship Maggie may have been in that um .
anybody that that in her circle not that .
i'm aware of at the same top in another car, investigators were speaking with alex remaining sun, twenty five year old buster murder. In this never before seen interview, buster recounts the call. He got telling him his mom and brother were dead, and he said, something terrible has happened. I could tell that he was emotional. He goes on to tell me that my mother and brother had been shot and killed.
You get that lose. Does your mind go to thinking about how that could have happened?
Yes, and just didn't understand how really comprehend. The investigator asked if his brother paul had any enemies.
You have any, any thought about anybody? No, sir.
I know people. I know people dislike them due to the accident, but I couldn't single out any that would do what do. But busters said he thought his brother was the likely target of the attack. Do you, after your brother and your mom happened to be down there, I would say, if I had to have to take, that's probably what I would be. I think that someone was probably trying to kill my brother, that my mom was probably just there.
Think that was.
yes, no. Of course, police had had already ruled out those involved with the boat crash, but alex murdoch was about to suggest another possible connection between the boat crash and the murders.
I'm a defender in a civil case involved .
in that would lead investigators to secrets. Secrets I IT kept not only from them, but from his wife. Can you set at one point that Maggie told you Alice didn't tell me everything? Any idea what he was talking about?
Alex murdoch had lost half his family, and for all practical purposes, his home he couldn't bear to spend another night at mol. So he asked the family housekeeper, er blank a to stay there. Are you afraid to stay there?
Remember that evening everybody had left, I had already left into the attorney, stayed behind because I don't wanna leave me in the house .
by myself longer brought her own gun for protection. Bud felt he was important that the home was kept just as your .
friend Maggie liked IT. I was just trying to make sure that I did things the way that SHE SHE liked things, you know, just to kinder, yeah.
I don't want anything .
at a place I knew how SHE was, you know, very detail. And you're doing .
all of this while you're also grip in the loss of a friend.
And we time I would think about crying, or I won't do IT in front of her mother. I would run in the laundry room and closer with all the people there.
Alex, still dropped by from time to time block up, says he seemed inconsolable.
He would have like episodes of crying if somebody would come around him and say, hey, you know, you need anything or he just would begin to cry.
Of course, investigators, we're still combing the property, searching for suspects, looking for evidence, conducting interviews and starting the major process of gathering digital evidence they'd hoped would establish a timely of the murdoch ch family's movements. That faithful night, what did you have from that night to go on?
We had polls phone that night. But of course, that takes a process to get into that film the next day that, say, within twelve hours, we found maggy phone on the roadside.
Meanwhile, agent owen climbed back in the car for a second, interviewed alex murdoch at the exact same time his brothers and son were being interviewed by other agents. What was the goal of the second interview here in in the car?
Try to get more information. I got very limited information that night of the homicides. We had time to let the death of his wife and son start the thinking. So a little more clear picture in his mind.
And so the second round of ovens cat mouse game with alex begin, I got .
kind of a basic overview. Yes, r and IT was pretty traumatic.
That's okay. Yes, I know you need to ask me.
ask me what you need to. Oin wanted to lock down alex account, where he and his wife and son were that night.
The more detailed the Better.
So paul, he said, paul arrived home before Maggie. The two of them rolled around the property.
We looked around for, you know, just doing things we like to do out there.
A T video of his dad rustly with the sample. Alex said they spent two hours together. Maggie ran errands that day and planned on staying overnight at the family B, C, but already texted her, asking her to come back to moza. By that evening, the family was sitting down to black as dinner of country fright day.
Maggie have gotten home, and, you know, we set down, we ate supper, which we're usually supper together.
After dinner, alex said he took a nap in Maggie. Paul went to the dog kinds on the property.
I was watching TV looking at my phone, and I actually fell a sleep on couch.
He guessed he woke up around nine and drove to check on his mom. About twenty minutes away.
I left my moms and I went back home. I got to the house when, and sad, nobody was there. I got in the car. I went back into canals.
That's where he said he found them shot to death. He downed none, one one. Just after ten P.
M. Ali was emotional again as he spoke about finding his wife and size. But then he brought up something that seemed like IT could be a big clue. Fender.
in a civil case involved in, I told you about the boat, right? yes. And there were some motions coming up in that on thursday, and I was mostly just getting ready for those names.
In the wake of that twenty nine boat accident that killed their daughter, Melody beaches family had file a wrongful death suit against alex and others.
It's a loss that theyll never get over.
Mark tenley is the return.
Y they really wanted to make sure that this didn't happen to somebody else's daughter or son. So IT was about accountability.
tsl. Y was demanding alex financial records to determine how much money alex portion of the lawsuit could be, but alex have refused to give them up. Blanka says Maggie felt like alec was hiding things about the civil suit from her, too.
When they would discuss paul, you know, the boating accident. Magi felt that he wasn't telling her everything he knew a little bit, bit and pieces, but he would only give her just enough, you know, to to kind of calm her down.
Alec was due in court where he'd be forced to answer questions about his finances on june tenth, twenty twenty one. Maggie paul, or murder three days before that hearing. So what kind of information would he likely have been compelled to turn over?
I was asking for all of his account information, checking account, savings accounts, retirement accounts, tax returns, everything.
O en. Realized this was an important moment in this case. What did you learn about the civil law IT and the affected that might have had on him?
The atterley, is on the civil side going against that like they were out to get them to make payn.
The beach family's lawsuit demanded millions from out. Blanker said that the lawsuit deeply impacted the family, especially maggy.
SHE said. Now now they want thirty million .
where we're onna .
get IT we're exactly Alice always handle the money. Blank says magic thought they were well off, if not rich. But investigators were starting to figure out that alex murdoch was hiding something big.
Something was alright. He wasn't being truthful.
In alex murdoch's two interviews with David, he given a time line of events for the night of the murders. After dinner.
alex states that he coasts asleep on the couch, playing on his phone and watching TV and takes them out, and that Maggie went to the kinneys and he wasn't sure a White pole went, but asked that he went to the kind of cesare. He later found them.
Alex story didn't put him at the kindles until after ten P. M. But early in the investigation, agents had spoken to a witness who blew that time line right .
out of the water.
You've likely heard his name rogan given is the first time you're seeing his police interview. Rogan was boarding his dog at the kindle and got a call from paul that night. Paul calme IT went in eight forty four.
Gibson told investigators he heard others in the background. One of them was alex murdoch. I heard .
miss magi and believed to be what was mister alex in the background? Can swear that I was mister alex, but I believe there was most. Dela, how well do you know? mr. L i'm like a third.
so .
recognize tty. Yeah I said that was talking the and I was like when a minute that's after .
they head dinner and alex told .
me he stayed .
in the house while managing into the kinds you believe poll thread because .
why would he like the information he .
gave us was unsolicited. Nobody prompted.
didn't say that, and there was no way to confirm what rogan said, only he had heard. Further complicating matters, in a second interview with investigators, rogan was less certain he had heard alex voice, but IT was still on David ow's mine when he asked alex to come to the sled officers and speak with him for the third time. IT was August eleven, twenty twenty one, two months after the murder.
You can do this. I can .
do that. Agent oven again asked alex about what he, Maggie and paul were doing earlier on the night they were killed.
What was conversation around the dinner table?
Normal relist man can't say exactly.
but alexa peat, his familiar story of taking a nap and driving to his moms before going into the kills.
And you didn't go back down there after dinner until you were return trop from visit and .
your mother yes, sir.
Then agent o, and confronted alica what rogan hit said, but didn't mention rogan by name.
I get that .
information.
that pause on phone. And Maggie was hurt in the background and you were heard in the background. And that was prior to none. Yeah.
I rogan gibson asked me if I was up there. He said he thought I was me.
Was IT .
you at nine a lot? Yes, sir. No, sir. Now, if my times are right, who do you think I could bit? I have no idea wen .
was surprised that alec volunteer rogan's name so quickly, and but he seemed prepared to knock down rogan version of events. IT made him suspicious for him .
to drop rogan gibson name prety pretty much chinanet anew. Sly, when I ask to him about the information and .
he knew so open, decided to go for brook.
did you kill me? I kill him. how? No daily do .
you know .
we did? No, I do not. Who did did you keep on?
No.
I do not keep on with that.
Alec and his lawyer left, but owen says that wasn't all what's .
not on videos had to escort amount of the building and he turned around him. He says, David, understand why you have to ask these questions. I want to thank you for doing your job. And he shoot my hand.
Were you surprised .
after I just accused to him the killing his wife and .
sign here you but while open had his suspicions, he lacked the evidence to prove alec was at the scene of the crown. Rogan recollection by itself wasn't enough, plus they hadn't found the murder weapons or any blood evidence implicating out what was the lowest point of the investigation for you. What was that point .
where you thought we get nothing?
Probably late August to twenty one because I I interviewed him on August a lemont s to twenty twenty one. And you the information not really drawing out, but just not having any tangible evidence to move forward on other, they are just going on out and shaking trees and talk to the people.
Still, oin couldn't quite shake that third interview, something about alex demining nag that him to me.
his eyes were called, especially looking back at the August eleventh interview when I asked me, feel killed his wife and son and he said, you think I kill my wife and son? I don't kill my wife and son. Just know that response struck me like, wow, yeah.
eden is ow's faith in the investigation was running low. Chief morquil remained resolute, was there pointing the, of course, of the investigation. When you thought we may not get to anybody on the same, I never really felt that I believe all alone we would might arrest. And that faith would be rewarded because another call was coming that would below the case wide.
And somebody to stop to help me. And when I turned my back, they tried to shoot me.
Investigator's stopped. Maybe I, like, was right all along. Maybe someone was out to get his family. And maybe .
whoever murder Maggie pal is back.
As the summer of twenty twenty one wound damn, alex murdoch was struggling to hold IT together. Friends say he was englished hardly sleeping. His long time housekeepers blank, who was worried about IT, was he still texting you? Yeah, what would he text .
mainly about his clothes and stuff like that? Because at that point I was staying at mozel and bring in his laundry over to the little house empty. I would just go with they make sure that he had food in the house, snacks because he wasn't eating much yet.
Things in alex life are about to get worse.
And now one one was emergency.
the scorching hot saturday of labor day weekend. Alec was on the side of the road and once again called nine. There had been another shooting, he said, but this time he was the target.
Okay, what's going on? I stop. I got a flat car and somebody start to help me. And when I turned my back, they try to shoot me.
Sled senior special agent ryan Kelly was running errands that day.
I've got a phone call from my supervisor and he's like, you're not going to believe this is like alex madox man shot the head and Michael are .
kidding me that they actually they try to suit you.
A good, similar and drove out to a feel where he met up with paramedics and officer was there too. Body came really.
I had a car go flat up, pulled over, and with they pay a lot of petition, they turned around, came back nice, acted like, and I turned my head and.
Until now, investigators had been closing in on all but the shooting, stopped them in their tracks to have him .
be the victim of a violent primaries. Shot the head. That's pretty significant. And I was a good maybe whoever murder Maggie pail is back.
Alec was air lifted to a savanna hospital. Agent Kelly drove down there to meet you. What sort of update you again?
Where else was me and transported to what is condition was ah because really didn't know you. Consider a headroom that it's going to be oh, that's going to be pretty significant. We don't know if you need be able to speak to us.
Kelly was stunned when he walked into the E. R. Alex appeared to be more or less fine. I mean.
he'd suffer a gunshot one. But IT was a gLances. IT struck the bottom of a skull, rode up the corporation of a skull accident through the top, so he suffered very minor injuries for guns.
Agent Kelly wanted to see the scene for himself, so he drove to soca hati road, where the shootings took place. So you get to the scene along side the road there.
What do you say our crime is there? We had other other agencies with there.
Alex story was that his car had gotten banged up when he blew out his tire. The first thing Kelly did was check the underside of the S. U. V.
B. So I was looking for that and he wasn't there. So I was like that that isn't makes me sense.
Neither did the lack of damage to the tire itself.
We get back to the the real driver, one that he said that he had had gone flat is probably fine. Nothing, nothing wrong with IT. So we start looking at IT and get up close. And we noticed on the side wall a little APP be a punching marner.
IT was a small slit, maybe an inter too long. Kelly had a good feeling.
will keep pocket knife. So you put a power knife and you can prevent down. And and we look at the puncher, and we put a knife up to IT. And I just IT just seems to match.
The next day, investigators got out their metal detectors and low in the hold within.
like an hour off, they find a nike and really like, uh, it's clue.
Investigators pull surveilLance video from a nearby church, hoping to get a look at the shooter. Alex said the man who shot and had been driving a blue pickup truck and there was a blue truck on the video. But IT wasn't exactly as alec descant Alice .
had given us a very, very distinct description of a blue and color neuromodulation vy truck. We don't see that truck on the video, but we see an older, almost like sanford son beat up truck. That's blue, but it's got like a like a gold or yellow quarter panel that should have stood out to alex, his memory, but he didn't.
Investigators were convinced that alex was like what had really happened out there on that country road. IT was time to confront alec with their discoveries.
You mean your phone name?

Investigators were all but certain alec murdoch hit, lied about the roadside shooting. There was no evidence he'd blown out his tire. Lab tests on the knife they found suggested alex had punched in the tire himself.
We took the DNA sample in the knife to columbia, and they were able to quickly identify alex's DNA on the knife, which was really the linchpin of everything falling apart.
They also managed to track down the men in the blue pickup. The owner of the truck was a former client of alex named curtis edy smith. Agent Kelly founded strange that alex hit bara hospital employees phone to call curtis from the emergency room like this is insane.
Why would alex be calling the guy from the hospital who was there saka H. E. The day he was shot?
Kelly needed to talk to alex again, but that was the moment alex made in a standing clean. He said he had a twenty year addiction to opioid and he had entered an out of state rehab facility. The news was a shocked to his friends and to investigators.
Did you uncover any evidence that would indicate that he had developed this massive oppoa addiction? No, but black cup, says alex drug problem was no surprise to her. Had you known that he'd been to read before .
he didn't fled out mention IT. But I knew that there was some the talks issues.
Do you know .
you could see that you could tell he would get jittery, he would get sweating?
Agent, I feared they wouldn't be able to talk to alex for a long time. But a week later, can we got a call from alex? Lawyer dick harp lean, a state senator and one of the most well known defense tourneys in south CarOlina.
Hey, we're ready to do a an interview, Michael. great. We had that way and you said, no know. We have due over the phone. We have a limited about the time .
we can only do over the phone.
That's stand. We had to make the call cycle. Let's do IT a jan. This is ryan Kelly sled.
How are you up? Kelly? Before we start, I just want to tell you apology to you for lion, you in the house file, because IT a very bad place. Then.
while agent Kelly listened over the phone and recorded how putting an interviewed alex, leaving him through a head spinning new version of events, the roadside shooting, alex said that was actually his attempt to kill himself not only had he's been distorted about losing his wife and son, but right before the shooting, i'd been fired from his family's law firm for stealing.
Previous day the news come out about of your evidence, or taking climate money, or offer money accurate, that's create. I thought that I would make IT easier on my family for me to be dead.
So alex came up with a scheme. He asked Carter Smith to kill him so IT wouldn't look like a suicide and his son bossed could collect ten million dollar life insurance policy. Curtis wasn't just a former client, alex said he was also his drug dealer in accusation curtis later denied.
And you asked him to shoot you this career.
do that phone call with decor putting. And alex, would you like what are absolutely.
i'm like, you're kidding me. Sometimes the best thing to do is if somebody y's talking, just shut up and listen. So dick at alex, confessing to all of these crimes, you enter into an agreement basically to have him kill you. Uh, so your son would then read the insurance benefits.
yes.
Alex was charged with insurance raud conspiracy to commit insurance raud and filing a false police report. Carter Smith was also charged, but says he knew nothing about the insurance scheme and did not shoot out IT. What did you think when you saw your form of boston and friend and handcuff for the first time?
I cried, it's like you're morning, the loss of another friend because that's not the person that I knew. I still felt bad for him.
I really did. But alex, legal troubles are only beginning. The stata twenty general office had uncovered a web of fraud and the sea going back decades by the end of the year, prosecutors, indeed, alex, for dozens of financial crimes alleging that he stole millions from his partners at the firm and also from clients. He pleaded not guilty to investigators. IT all made him look very capable of killing his wife and son if he's willing .
to steal from the most vulnerable of people and live this extraversion lifestyle. And he's one hundred percent able to to kill magnian paul to continue his visage.
But they still couldn't prove alec was at the scene of the crop. One source of information they'd never been able to tap was paul. Cell phone IT was locked and no one knew the code. Brit dov, who runs sled computer crime unit, was test with the cracking. But IT came with a major risk if we .
attempted to, to just punch in numbers, eventually we could have locked the phone in. The only way to forgotten open would have been to a reset of IT, and basically would wiped out any information contained on there.
So in march twenty, twenty two, duv reached down to the secret service. They offered to send the phone to a company with the software to crack IT. That company cautioned IT could take years. IT could run .
potentially up to .
seven years or longer and an attempt to obtain that pass code. So the secret service took a chance, punched in polls, birth date, and that they called .
me early that morning and said, hey, we got into the fine. We got the extraction. You want to come pick you up.
Love you. Just where to look among the thousands of polls, videos he served in on the night of the murders. And there IT was eight forty four P.
M. Moments before paul death, when I played IT. The first thing you see the dogg in the keno.
And then you hear voices. You hear three distinct voices in IT. There was paul, give up, give them. And Maggie. And the third to his ear, IT, was .
unmistakable.
I like murdoch.
I listened to a three to four times. I was in disbelief at the time. Mediately got on the phone to David owen.
Wen said he practically fell out of his chair.
I was really excited .
because I .
can prove that I was lying to me.
Did you know in that moment that the case had been blown wide open?
Oh yes.
First day to twenty, general Allen Wilson, the discovery was a game changer.
The aha moment for me was the kino. Video IT showed that he was there within minutes of their murder, and IT gave me the comfort factor that I needed to be able to and die.
Angela four, teen, twenty twenty two. Alex murdoch was indeed for killing his wife and son. He pleaded not guilty.
How alec murdoch was .
headed to try IT was a completely circumstantial case.
A lot of people didn't believe that there would be a conviction, either because of who they defend IT was, or because of the evidence they knew of. And so at the beginning, there was a distinct possibility that we would lose the case.
The investigation was far from over. Some of the most critical evidence against alex wouldn't appear until the jury was already seated.
I mean, that weekend was crazy.
You pull in all school.
That is great.
A mere six months past between alex murdoch, entitled and the start of a double murder trial for prosecutor creative waters that in a time frame, but it's almost unheard of.
the defense ask for speedy trial and I think a little but to their surprise.
with even one, do you think they thought that the state wouldn't .
be ready in time? I think they thought there was no way, and we would ever be able to pull IT off that quickly, and was actually the same speed to bring into trial.
Insane, yes, but water said the time cranch was also motivated.
Let's just go ahead and do this thing.
On january twenty fifth, twelve jars settled into their seats in this historic carton county courtroom, the same room where generations of murdoch who tried cases, including the man at the defense tape, alex murdoch, how had this man who d seemingly had IT, all ended up here?
People, I think, have a hard time because they try to apply their own rational, logical, Normal thought processes to what is inherently irrational and illogical and abNormal. You're going to hear some of what was going on alex murdoch, life lying after that day stuff.
In his opening statement, prosecute waters planted the seed for jurors that the events of june seventh could not be viewed in isolation. He believed the wings had been swirling around alex murdoch for years, a gathering storm of secrets, lies and coverups, all culminating in murder you're going .
to reach in escaping .
book conclusion that alex murder magin pole.
that he was the storm, that the storm was coming for them, that they got as result of.
according to waters, the first day luge hit alc and february twenty nineteen, when drove that boat into a bridge, killing mellerby beach, the lawsuit that followed thread to drown in by exposing his alleged financial missed.
All those things were coming to ahead. Paul in the boat case had become a significant liability to him.
The prosecution's most crucial testimony, of course, was that cell phone video that placed alec at the kindles calling the family dog barba just minutes apparently before paul Maggie e were shot. Half dozen witnesses were asked to identify the voices on that video. The answer was always the same.
as did you recognize on that video?
Paul mu magi muran osm.
pol mortmain I and l. Muri, the murdoch's housekeeper .
blank was also a key witness for the prosecution.
I was nervous ahead, seen him face to face, a head tag to him. So when I walked down and I could sense like he was trying to get me to look over, I couldn't do IT block .
was emotional, as he described, deriving at mosel the morning after the murder.
I was hard because I know SHE wasn't going be coming back.
A main part of blancs testimony centered on what alec was wearing. The day of the murder, IT appeared. He wore at least three different shirts. Sled got one of them, this White t shirt, which prompted a question, had alex gotten rid of a shirt that might have contained evidence a few months after the murders, belonga says alex pressor to remember him wearing a particular shirt that day.
He was pacing back and forth in the in the living room and he said, I got a bad feeling. He said, something's not right and then he said, well, you know, there was a video that was out and he said, you remember the shirt I was wearing? I didn't say anything, but I was kind that on back because I don't remember that I felt more like he was telling me, you know, this is what I was wearing. He didn't sound like he was asking me, what was I wearing?
Did like you is odd yeah.
it's was like I had heart burn when he was .
asked to me that prosecutor waters beliefs, alex thought he could manipulate blanka into saying what he wanted her to say.
I think that was a prime example of the influence he was used .
to wielding influence. The state believe he used to steal millions of dollars from victims, financial crimes that were about to be exposed by the civil case against him. And that's why prosecutors are alex killed his wife and son. He believed their death would make him a sympathetic defendant, deflect attention away from his financial crimes, and perhaps derail the civil case entirely.
Alex real skill is an was not the academic side or the preparation side, but what he did understand was the emotion of a case. He understood the supply factor.
If prosecutors thought evidence of murdoch's financial crimes would provide a motive, they counted on their last witness to prove opportunity.
Special agent Peter rodosto.
That's a special agent. Peter rodoin unveiled the digital tour of force using cell phone activity and GPS data. He built a time line of the night of the murder IT showed alex had time to kill and to get rid of guns and close. Well.
you've been working on this document right here .
roughly about a year on this document. I think the biggest thing that the timeline did for the jury was to show that at eight forty nine magin, paul stopped Operations .
on .
their phone was just that aha moment of, yes. Now we know that this is when they died.
but when the trial began, rudolf ski's time line was missing some key information. Then, half way through, general motors finally handed over long waited digital from alex suburban berdos. I had just one weekend to make sense of IT all.
I don't get IT until around seven o'clock on saturday, but by the next morning we had everything planted in, ready to go to the defense, ready to go the ages office you .
pulled in old school all night.
That is great.
The data showed how fast alec was driving that night when he passed the side of the road where magic was found. He was going forty two miles per hour, slow enough to throw IT out the window after passing .
that location. As the defense vehicle start to accelerate.
IT does the suburban sped up to seventy four miles an hour, reaching his mom's home at nine twenty two pm. He stayed there twenty one minutes long enough to establish in an ali ba, and perhaps the scored evidence. He then spent back to moza, reaching eighty miles per hour. Those high speeds got rodosto y's attention wasn't a sign. Alec was frantic after committing the murder.
Why are you going so fast if you didn't know something occurred? And it's just, you know, a Normal visit to your mum's house because during the day earlier, he didn't reach those speeds. I think he reached the max of sixty coming back from the office and go to the office.
That was a red for .
three story.
We're in so many .
out there too. I called nine one one just seventeen seconds after he arrived back at the kinds that didn't give them enough time to check the bodies, as he said he did before placing the call. With that, the prosecution arrested. In now, IT was the defensive turn to make its case, which IT would do by going on the attack against sleds investigation and presenting an unforgettable witness at the center of IT. All I am .
going to test, I want to test.
Attorney alex murdoch was now defending alex murdoch, his defense resting in the hands of two lawyers with decades of trial experiencing jim griffin, dicker poly.
This is out more. And alex was the loving father of paul, and the loving husband he left came back and found his wife and child dead. He didn't know who did that.
He did do IT. He is presumed innocent.
Much of the defensive case consisted of attacking sds investigation should the police .
be walking through the scene.
Do we know what other evidence they may have?
Destroy, have no audio .
special agent .
David ow's work was also criticized by the deficit.
And you never searched the almeta property for any signs of murder evidence, guns, let me close or anything until well after sometime in middle de september's acra. That is great.
Owen had been consumed by this case for nearly two years and was also dealing with his own personal tragedy.
My mother passed away the day I was set to justify. I took that afternoon to collect myself and think about how we're going to proceed. SHE actually was admit to the hospital with double lemonia the day the trial started.
And I told her, I said, you know, these are going to long days. And he said, don't worry about coming to see me. I know what you .
have to do. That meant .
explaining and defending slides actions during cross examination, including the fact that the two different guns used to kill Maggie hall had never been found.
No murder weapons were found in the residence. Is that correct? Is create and no murder weapons were found on the property.
At most problems are correct. That is correct. Sled failed miserably in investigating this case. And had they done a component job, ali would have been .
included when you would hear the defence all but say, sled bundle this case from the beginning, they must handle the crime scene. These bundling idiots can solve anything.
He does get aggravating to hear that, but that's defense one to want. Tacked the investigation, attacked the crime scene. Let's, let's tell the world they screwed IT up. They get IT wrong.
Of course, why people probably remember most about these cases, alec murdoch's two days on the witness stand.
I am going to.
this was his community. This was his circuit. I felt that he, he would be convinced in his ability to sort of being forward and just in the eye, and convinced them, much as he had done in many a closing argument.
I would never hurt, and I would never hurt paw, ever, under any circumstances.
Keep IT. But how would he explain away the cellphone video that placed him ethic kinneys with bubble just moments before paul and Maggie was shot?
Were you, in fact, that the candles at eight forty four pm on the night magan power were murder?
I was.
did you law a slide age and o and a deputy law rotton on the night of june seven?
I did like to.
So why did he, like he said, he is addiction to pain killers .
was the reason I wasn't thinking clearly. I don't think I was capable of reason. And I love about being and down there. And i'm so sorry that I did. What a time would where we weve .
the first time I ever heard him say that he was on that kino video was when he got up on the stand, the video was daming, the video was damming. And I think also what was damming was he was lying about lying. And I think the jury .
saw that when the time came for waters to cross examine alex, he knew the eyes of the world we're watching. Did you watch or or read any of the the coverage or the analysis during the trial? Not really.
There's going be a lot of criticism, but you just can't let the get off your game. I still get to look at those jars and the eyes. This is a south co. On a jury. A south co. On a case is not hollowed wood, and you've been able to lack quickly and easily and convincingly if you think it'll save your skin for well over a decade, doesn't that true?
I have lad, well over a decade that kind of wanted him .
to continue to perfect his lie in front of the jury, for them to watch him lie in real time and sort of work on that, which is why I let him answer a lot of questions, that, are you a family and I latter?
A family and I latter. You mean, like, did I shoot my wife and muscle? Yes, no.
not. Do you think putting him on the stand hurt their case?
I don't think that helped.
After six weeks of trial, the case went to the jury, and IT will rise less than three hours later. Guilty verdict. The next day in the very courtroom, where's father, grandfather and great grandfather had prosecuted cases before him.
Alex murdoch was sentenced for killing his wife and son, a sentence for term for the rest of your natural life, judge clifton newman, who has served on the bench for more than twenty years, had a question for alex about something he said on the stand over tangle web. We wave. Could you mean by that?
No, that continue that.
And the question is, when will be in a once turn? Life now would be spent behind bars or would IT turns out the alex murdoch saga is far from over.
The conduct that the jurors have reported to us is highly and proper and Frankly, illegal.
The trial had been a national spectable, with viewers south CarOlina a and around the country tuning in to watch alex murdoch meet his fate. The result of all that coverage, unexpected fame for some of the players, including the investigators.
I was in costco last week. As i'm checking out one of the clerks as you look for a year or you want TV and I said, no, no, no on TV and where you look just like the guy from the alex murdoch case. Busted .
prosecutor .
creating waters had his likely created in yn, you've got women making cruciate doll of you celebrity.
I'm a minute fourteen and forty five seconds of the fifteen.
After the verdict, I SAT down with three jurors, James mcdowell, amy Williams and wool and generate.
Well, we found the .
testimony about alex time line and financial schemes compelling. They also pay close attention to his performance on the stage.
You could feel him lying. You could feel him, you know, making these emotions and turning IT on and off. He would go to the sob, you know, he just be sobbing, and then he should be done.
He don't believe the tears.
He didn't have any tears.
Alex murdoch appeal his conviction. And then in september, has a turny dropped a bomb? They filed a motion declaring alex should receive a new trial because the jury had been tapered with .
what we had filed today, supported by sworn testimony of jurors, is that the Clark of court had improper private communications with the jurors.
The tampering ing accusation stem from alleged conduct by the cock of court, Becky hill, according to alex eternity, some jurors stated that during the trial, the clerk told them not to be fooled by evidence presented by the defense. Wander also said they felt pressured by her to reach a quick guilty verdict. The clerk, Becky hill, denied all allegations in the states reply tenders suited statement, saying they were not pressured into a decision by Becky hill.
All I can say is that we found found a very strong motion in rebuttal to what they said. And IT tells a very different story. We're going to defend the trial. We're going to fend our work product and were going to fend the hard work of the men and women in law enforcement who help us get this conviction.
The motion has yet to be ruled on by the court. The defense also asked the judge clifton noon and be removed for matters related to the murder case, saying he may be called to testify about the alleged jury tampering ing. They also cited the today show interview the judge did with me after the verdict, where, according to alex lawyers, he expressed his personal belief that alex committed murder.
You think that he'll be haunted by his his wife and son? No, I think so. I cannot imagine him having a peaceful night knowing what he did. I'm sure if he had an opportunity to do IT over again, he'd never do IT. Um he was driven by whatever caused him to do what he did and he you hold lot going on. Yesterday, judge newman recused themselves from the murder case, but he was presiding in court earlier today when alex reached a plea deal for the state grand jury's financial.
I play guilty.
You are he'll be sentenced for those later this month, while the courtroom drama in the murdoch case continues, the team who put him away says they stand by their investigation.
My brother calls me and he tells me that he's sitting in a restaurant. And you over hear someone say, I never dreamed that this guy would get convicted of murdering his wife and son. I just thought he was above the law and then they said, this case has renewed my faith in south karoline, a criminal justice system. And I said, man, that is probably the best compliment I could ever get.
