George Hennard felt isolated and paranoid due to his strict upbringing, frequent moves, and inability to form lasting relationships. His paranoia was fueled by his belief that a secret group of White women was conspiring against him, preventing him from dating and finding work.
George's relationship with his father was strained due to his father's strict, authoritarian parenting style. His father expected a lot from him and corrected his behavior with beatings, which led to George feeling humiliated and isolated.
George's mental instability led to multiple incidents in his military career, including being red-lined before commanding officers, assaulting a crew member in a racially charged argument, and refusing lawful commands from his superiors. These incidents resulted in his suspension and probation.
The turning point was when George was caught with marijuana on his ship and subsequently lost his sAiling license. This loss devastated him as his identity was closely tied to his work at sea. His mental state deteriorated further, leading to increased paranoia and erratic behavior.
George's obsession escalated from stalking and spying on the Bug family to writing a disturbing five-page letter to the daughters, mistakenly sending it to the wrong address. When he realized his mistake, he called the family, leading to a confrontation with the mother. Despite his apology, his behavior continued to escalate, including flashing his headlights at one of the daughters and standing ominously in his driveway as she passed by.
The final straw was the realization that his father's mansion, which he had been working on, was being sold. This, combined with his ongoing paranoia and mental instability, pushed him over the edge, leading to the Luby's massacre.
George meticulously prepared by arming himself with two semi-automatic pistols (a Glock 17 and a Ruger P89) loaded with nearly 100 rounds of ammunition. He wrote a final letter to his sister, put on a specific outfit, and left his home for the Luby's cafeteria, planning to arrive during lunch hour.
In 1991, a horrific massacre rocked the state of Texas that left 23 people dead, 27 people wounded and so many more lives changed forever. But this massacre was truly like no other, and the warning signs had been present for years. Join us as we examine what led up to one of the most infamous mass shootings in American history. Warning, this is an incredibly disturbing episode, and listener discretion is advised.
