Last night was a good night for supporters of abortion rights. Yeah.
a handful of states holding elections. Abortion access appear to be a winning issue more than a year after the U. S. Supreme court overturned .
robie wade N P, R, Sarah Cameron is what the snow for a look at the results. Good morning.
ara m, so let's start with the big one.
ohio. And we're calling at the big one because there was a ballot initiative that people on all sides of the issue happen, keeping an iron. What happened?
Well, ohio s voted to put protections for reproductive rights, including abortion, in their state constitution, after a long fight that later many months. And ohio is now the seventh state since the jobs feed Jackson women's health decision last year from the supreme court that voted to support abortion rights in one way or another through about initial. So we've seen this in state after state.
And IT shows that voters, even in red states, can use the ballot box to push back against abortion restrictions. They think you've gone too far. I talked to Kelly hall with the fairness project last night that a group that advocates for the use of ballot measures to advances progressive policies.
ohio is the first state that I really think we could put in that red column that he said, we can go on offence and we can win. And that is an inspiring example that shines a light on the path for other red states. So again.
what we saw there was a red state with a republican governor and republican legislature passing aversion protections. And this means a state law banning most abortions after six weeks in ohio won't be .
able to take effect. So let's go to a gini now is often seen as a bell water status, as a purple state. Talk about the issue there, what was at stake and what happened?
Yeah, abortion wasn't directly on the ballot in Virginia the way that I was in ohio, but the issue was really central to the campaign. The entire legislature was up for reelection in Virginia is off your election. Democrats held on to control of the state senate, and they flipped the state house, which had been controlled by republicans. Now that was important, Michelle, for abortion rights supporters, because the republican governor, glen yang kin, has supported a proposal to be on most abortions after fifteen weeks. As IT is right now, Virginia is the only state in the south that has not restricted abortions since the overturning of robi wade, and IT looks likely to stay that way, at least for now.
So what are the races?
Have you been watching? You know, another important one was kentucky governors raised another red state, but with a democratic governor, the democratic and combat andy busher one reelection after facing a chAllenge from the states republic, an attorney general, Daniel Cameron Cameron, had defended kentucky near total abortion ban and bushes campaign released an emotional ad in which a Young woman talked about her experience being a victim of rape by a family member and pointed out that can tucker's abortion lot doesn't contain rape or incest options.
So again, we have a red state here. As we mentioned last year, voters rejected an effort to amend can tucker's constitution in a way that would have been unfavorable to abortion rights. And those voters this year have reelected their democratic or so.
So before we let you go, what are the take ways do you see from these results anything that might offer clues about what to expect next year?
Well, all indications are that voters are still being motivated by the abortion right issue that a good sign for democrats. The democratic congressional campaign 的 tee released a statement celebrating the Victory in ohio and looking ahead to next year, warning that many republicans still want to pass a national abortion ban, if they can. And so expect more of this next year. Also expect more bd initials in states like arizona and florida potentially.
That is ampal Sarah, my camera. Sarah. Thank you.
Thank you.
Staying with politics, twenty twenty four republic and presidential hopefully will face off in a third debate tonight in miami.
Now they'll be the smallest late of candidates to take the stage yet the republican national committee says only a handful of candidate qualified here .
to tell us more about what to expect from tonight's debate. Is in peers actually loop, as in my m, good morning. Actually, good morning. First, lets talk about who did qualify to participate in tonight's debate, who we're going to see.
sure. So only five candidates have qualified this time around things to strict or qualifying rules from the republican national committee. So former south lana governor nicki hili, floria governor randi santis, business man bag romsdal mi south lana, senator tim guy and former new jersey governor Chris ristal will be on on stage tonight.
North to the governor, dug burgan, who was in the first two debates, did not qualify this time around. And former arko governor isa hugin, who appeared in the first debate, hasn't qualified for these last two. And of course, we won't be seeing former of vice president my pens on stage tonight .
because he recently dropped out of the four and getting there shouldn't be a problem. But I take IT he's not onna make IT no.
no, he's not. Donald trump has not qualified for any of the republican debate so far, even though yet he's pulling in the lead and has huge fun raising numbers. He is not met all the qualifying standards, specifically one that requires each candidate to pledge that they will support whoever wins the nomination.
Trump has flat out refused to sign their pledge. He has also said that he doesn't want to elevate his opponent by being on stage with them. But just like the last few debates, he's planning some sort of counter programing, if you will, he's holding a rally relatively close by.
In high alia, hiya is a predominant cuban american party town. Language is a subset of voters trust on really well with in twenty twenty, trump outperformed expectations, specifically among the ino voters and south ordas. So this is an important basis of supporters that he is expected to bring out onions and as you mentioned.
is close by for him. So of the people who are on the stage, who are going to be on the stage, nicki hai, former south, are on the governor, former U. N.
Ambassador, should know, appointed by truck. She's been getting a lot of buz in the media first. what? Why is that? And how big of a deal is this debate for her? Well.
he is definitely candidate to watch night, right? She's been steadily gaining support in the polls. Importantly, she's been doing really well in match ops with president biden in swing states.
And you know, what's done IT is a lot of them have started with strong debate performance. Often you will see the crowd primaries that candidates will get a lot of moment and with something like a good to be performance. And I just sort flame out.
But here he has been a bit of anonymity that SHE has been consistently gaining ground in this race right now. I think SHE is perhaps the lead alternatives to trump among the state of candidates that are left. And there were high expectations that for the governor on descanted, st.
Would probably feel that role. But his campaign has had a lot of pit falls, and he had some pretty lackluster performances. And the last few debate, for that reason, I actually would expect that hail will set her sites on rd. sances. In fact, her campaign has already released an add taking ame at him.
So what do we expect the candidates to talk about tonight, you think going to be the focus?
Well, you know, this is the first debate since israel was attacked, right? And i'm sure what is happening in middle east, as well as how president biden is handling the crisis, will come up all the affections of the democratic party that have been split on how to deal with israel as IT continues to bomb gaza, the humAnitarian crisis there, republicans have been pretty uniform in their response. And this is one of those issues where there isn't a lot of infighting in the republican party, which gives them an opportunity that is set a contrast between themselves and the democrats are not necessarily a contrast between each other.
that is. And fears actually look has actually thank you.
你好, thank you.
The U. S. Has struggled to contain the spread of many common sexually transmitted infections in a new report to us home, one of the most devastating consequences.
the number of babies born with syphilis, is ten times what IT was a decade ago. Congenital civilis can cause steel birds and miss carriages or IT can lead to long term health problems for the child like the formed bones, blinds, definite and developmental delays and pig will .
stone us with us now to talk more about these numbers from the centers for disease control and prevention will good morning.
Hi, Michelle.
This trend is really troubling. Could just tell us about what's gone on here?
yeah. I mean, the first thing to know is that sexually transmitted infections in general are on the rise, and that's especially true for safe less. I was actually looking at cdc data that show cases have just been climbing for years among adults.
And when IT comes to congenital civilians at this new report shows there were more than thirty seven hundred cases last year. About two hundred and thirty of those resulted in stubs. I called a doctor, Edward hug keys in expert on st. And a professor at university of alabama at birmingham.
This is the most tragic example because these are innocent by standard. Is implemented of a much broader problem regarding our chAllenges and controlling sitst.
Right now, rates of siftings are the highest theyve been since the sixties. And the result is that some cases don't get caught during pregnant y because there are also big gaps and maternal care in this country.
You had talked more about that if you were doing like, why weren't these cases caught before they could do this kind of harm?
Yeah, I mean, we have a few ideas. IT appears about forty percent of the cases last year were among people who did not have care. And this reflects what I heard from health officials on the ground. A like doctor natacha bag this syrian, she's the chief medical executive for the state of michigan. A congenital civilities is entirely preventable if it's treated during pregNancy, begetter rian says they make sure to review each case to understand why a mother was not treated.
They may not have an O, B, G, Y N or midwife. They may be women who get their care intimately in urgent cares for emergency departments, and many of them did not have civilians testing done during pregnancies.
So clearly, testing is one problem, and the cdc is responding to this by encouraging broader screening of sexually active women in their partners and using rapid tests and treatments and settings like emergency departments, even prisons and jails. But another disturbing finding in this report is that about half of the cases did get picked up. There was a positive test, but for whatever reason, there was just not adequate or timely treatment.
But this is obviously like a big chAllenge. But what else needs to be done? Yeah.
it's a tough time right now. A sti prevention fell, by the way, side during the pandemic. Here's David harvey.
He directs the national coalition of S. T. D. directors.
The numbers are going up every year, and we have yet to see the willows exercise by our political leaders to do what IT takes to turn the situation around.
he says. This new report just underscores that complacency on the federal level around controlling st. For example, there were hundreds of millions of dollars for public health that were sighed away earlier this year during debt ceiling negotiations. And on top of all of this, Michelle ders, currently a shortage of the only antibiotic that used to treat simplest during pregNancy, cdc says it's not aware of anyone who's pregnant not getting the medication because of the shortage. But the supply isn't expected to be fully restored until .
next year that amperes will stand well. Thank you. Thank you.
Another story were following the house voted last night to ensure democratic representative, where he added to leave of michigan for her reMarks, were related to israel and palestinians. Four republicans voted against censure, but twenty two democrats joined the majority of republicans to pass IT, saying to lee, promoted false narratives regarding the october seventh commons attack on israel and for calling for israel's destruction.
The measure said IT deletes use of the phrase from the river to the sea in an ad. Some view IT as a call for the elimination of israel to leave the only palestinian american and congress, said her colleagues were distorting her reMarks and trying to silence her and others speaking up for human rights. Let me be clear, my criticism has always been of the israeli government in net yahoo actions. And that's up first for wednesday, november eighth.
