The united states, with help from britain a few hours ago, unleashed a series of air strikes on the hoses. The main military force force backed by government says .
he ordered the strikes because of what he called precedented and reckless attacks by the hoods on commercial ships in the red sea.
The president says his aim is to put an end to those attacks, but the who they are vowing to do exactly the opposite and step up the assault for more were joined by N P. R, national security correspondent greg mary. High grade.
good morning. Labour.
good morning. So what do we know at this point about the strike?
So the U. S. Carried out these strikes from ships from plains, and and included a submarine as well. As you noted, britain took part with their strikes of its own. More than a dozen sites were targeted in the western part of women.
And in these are places where the hood these have been firing missile and drones and more than two dozen commercial ships in the red sea since november. The U. S.
Navy is protecting these ships, have been shooting down the incoming hootie weapons and repeatedly warning the hoot to knock IT off. And for president biden, IT appears. The final straw came on tuesday when the hot launched more than twenty drones and missiles, including some directed at the U.
S. Commercial ship, uh, with the U. S. Navy nearby.
So you mention there that it's more than a dozen strikes Carried out by the U. S. And the U.
K. Where they effective. Will they deter the house from Carrying out more strikes?
Yeah, we really don't know those kinds of details yet. The the strikes took place overnight in the U. S.
Military is likely to get a much Better picture today. Uh, in daylight. The U. S. Navy has been watching closely for two months.
So they should have a pretty good idea about the places the hoods were using to launch these attacks. But even if the U. S. And british strikes were on target and did inflict damage, the hoods are believed to have more weapons and who these today are vowing to Carry out more attacks. And they say they're doing this in solidarity with the palestinians.
I mean, this is a regionally on fire. The war in gaza, there been U. S.
Strikes in syria, iraq, against iranian back militias falling in attacks by them. That would these attacking in the red C. M, an, what's the rescue of real escalation? Yeah.
that's very, really more countries could be drawn into the fighting. A, president biden has been very aware of this. Ince, the israel homos fighting began three months ago, saying repeatedly, doesn't want this war to become a wider regional conflict.
But bitten is now saying he can allow international commercial shipping to be disrupted in this way. Uh, the red is a major shipping lane connecting europe, the middle east and asia. And and ships are having to take this much longer and more expensive route around the southern tip of africa.
So bite is trying to get the hut to back down without ign this larger regional conflict. And it's a real gamble. It's a real risk.
Now, go before let you go. I mean, we've have to talk about iran's role in all this. Me.
what is iran's role here? Yeah senior U. S. Official describes iran as the primary enable of the hoods are saying around provides the weapons, uh, providing intelligence on the ships.
And we should also note iran is the main backer of homos arming that group for years in gaza. It's the main patron of hezbollah, bana. So iran is condemning these us and british strikes and will be watching closely to see what sort of signals iran sins about all moil.
And P. S. greg? Mary, thanks for your reporting, greg.
sure. Thanks later.
Israel today presents its rebuttal to the charge of genocide IT faces in the international court of justice in the hay.
The case is being brought by south africa, long time critic of real treatment of ian. Yesterday in africa, you that israel's response to the hamas attack of october seventh, which according to israel killed twelve hundred, is directed not just at homos militants, but at all palestinians in gaza. More than twenty three thousand people, most of civilians, have been killed in israel response to the homos attack, according to goes health ministry mp s.
Rob shez is covering the proceedings from ber lin and joins us now.
Good morning, rab.
Good night. So south africa said yesterday the quote, level of israel killing is so extensive that nowhere is safe in gaza. The case has got international attention. What's the reaction been here?
I'll start with reaction outside the court itself in the here. And there were hundreds of people rating their chanting slogans for both sides. Impar producer ababa carbajal had a chance to speak to a few of them.
He spoke to teacher shimon keys, who had come there from london. Keys is a jew, and he does not support israel's military campaign. When asked about how he thought israel would respond in court today.
here's what he said. I assume that they will try bring up the same matches that they constantly do, which is you have to help us because the, you know, the whole, of course, never again. But I think that this this line is starting to lose its power. And ella key says .
he agreed with the charge of genocide against israel, given the widespread destruction through gaza.
And how is I know israel will be presenting its defense in court today, but how is israel responding to yesterday's hearing?
All start yesterday when the prime minister, Benjamin, a yahoo, did by saying the hypocrisy of south africa knows no bounds.
Here's his statement of hum b shashi knew him, him, but it's a home.
And then, yeah, he said here, he called the israel defense forces the most moral army in the world, and he said he was doing everything to avoid harming civilians. He went on say that the state of israel is accused of genocide at a time when IT is fighting genocide. And he reiterated that militants on a tober seventh committed the worst crimes against choose sense, the holocaust. This statement is likely a preview of what we are going here today when israel presents its defense to the seventeen judges at the international court. Justice.
okay. So as you mention israel, south africa had to turn yesterday. Israel takes the steam today. I'm assuming they were ruling on this will take quite a while.
yeah. IT may not come for years, but yesterday's south africa devoted much of its three hour testimony to trying to persuade the court to issue, which called the provisional ruling. This is similar to an emergency and junction whereby the court could direct israel to stop its military campaign, gaza, and allow more aid to reach palestinians there. Anything that would show that it's not aggravating this dispute and that provision al ruling could come within weeks.
Now what would a provisional ruling like that actually due to nations typically comply?
Yeah, you know, I spoke to a legal scholar earlier this week about this, whose kept track of international corner justice ruling over the years, and he found that states comply and only half of all provisional rulings. But he also pointed out that because these rulings tend to declare certain values of the international order, if the state refuses to comply, IT reminds the rest of the world which side of that international order that they're on and IT can have long term political consequences. Now we do not know how the court will rule in this particular case, but it's a good bet we'll have more clearly .
in the coming weeks. That's emps berlin correspondent rushes. Thanks for. Thank you.
Taiwan is voting for a new president saturday. The elections are .
a big deal on the self ruled island. Residents there could only start directly electing their leaders in the midnight hundred and nineties. And china is always a big issue. IT wants control over taiwan and closely watching the outcome of .
the elections and years. Emily fang is in taiwan covering these elections. Good morning.
Emily. Good mornings.
So how is this election shaping up?
Well, it's a dramatic when, as usual, elections here are super colorful. They revolve around these ranges that are more like rock concerts. And there's been weeks of dore knocking already the usual mudslinging.
And of course, there's ongoing debate about how to decharge china from influencing taiwan or perhaps even invading. The presidential election so far is really boiling down to two parties. The ruling D P, P, whose canada William lie wants to continue moving trade away from china and build a dogmatic ties um with the U.
S. Against china. Beijing, by the way, despise ed him. They've put out a statement yesterday saying that lie is walking the quote evil path towards formally declaring independence for taiwan and the art sanction is running mate.
And then on the other side and I won, there's the k mt. Party and their candidate, hou e. Once more engagement with china. He wants to deter IT military, but he also wants to trade with china and to open up cultural exchanges. And taiwan voter polls are banned in the about we can have getting up to voting but so far the D P, P, life is expected to win the presidency.
right? And he's the candidate that um wants less engagement with china. What would winning mean for taiwan and first relations with china if line winds well .
in the short term, probably a slight escalation in the existing chinese military activity around taiwan. Beijing already threatened more tea, sun, taiwan's goods if the dpp wins. Both american and taiwan's security officials have been telling N, P, R. Beijing is stepping up its distinct max efforts in, so they're trying to scare or misinform voters into choosing more pro china candidates, and then earlier this week, trying to launched a satellite that went directly over southern taiwan, which LED to this interesting moment at a press briefing at taiwan's foreign ministry.
Is a satellites Carried by a rocket flu over taiwan and deep might fall before there was a national alert being issued.
What you're hearing is an emergency missile alert going out to everyone's phone in ti one, including mine and including that of the foreign isters who had to explain to us that this was not a chinese missile but a satellite launch from china. But in general, we've been seeing trying to take all these peaced meal efforts to try to pressure I want to vote a certain way, but they've stopped the short of actual military, and there is no sign trying to wants to instigate war over this election.
So voting starts in less than a day where you are, Emily, what are you looking out for?
I'm looking out for the legislate results because that looks like no one party will get a majority, which means that regardless for the president is we're going to see a lot of political gridlock on significant budget and national defense issues in taiwan. Um i'm also looking forward to voting actually because in taiwan for security reasons, there is no absently voting. Everything has done in person by hand on paper, and all the votes are counted in public by hand as well, with the results usually coming out that evening after just a few hours.
Emps Emily fang in thai pi, iwan, thank you, Emily. Thank you very. And that's a first for friday, january twelve. I I love .
