president biden is meeting with the leaders of japan and south korea. Later today I came, David. That's the presidential .

retreat in the mountains of north west maryland. It's been the scene of a number of diplomatic breakthrough, and this is the first time since two thousand and fifteen that any foreign leader is .

being hosted there. Npr White house correspondent as the hottest will be at camden vid, and he joins us now, hires. Good morning. Good morning. So what's the dynamic like between these three leaders?

Will they get along? But historic south korea in japan have had a rather strained relationship later that dates back to the early twenty. And when japan colonized the korean pony sola in recent years, I will say that the relationships, the bilateral relationship between soul and tokyo has been improving. And president biden himself, you know, is somebody who has really wanted to lean into rebuilding alliances for him that this particular relationship in the pacific is critical as part of a broader strategy to take counter china's influence.

okay. And we just heard Michelle l say it's the first time since two thousand and fifteen that a foreign leaders being hosted there. What does the fact that they are meeting at camp David mean for these talk?

IT brings? So I think, a certain level of intimacy and gravitas. I spoke to the former naval commanding officer at cm. David. His name is Michael georgio. He's kind of been an eye witness to history and he says it's a really quiet, peaceful place to afford personal relationships if .

I were invited to camp day. But I think if I would worry, I value that morning going to the way else. It's like bring someone in your family room.

And later he says that because the camp is this really rustic place, you think cabins with see or shingles. But it's also had a long legacy of diplomacy that dates back to F D. R.

In world war two. Rose vell and poor invited the british prime minister winston churchill there. There is a famous photo of them by a stream. They would go out talking and fishing.

And Frankly, one historian told me they kind of mapped out what the end of the war, what the world would look like when the war wrapped up. Then you've has forward to the cold war, and president ison hower invited the soviet leader. You can accrued travel, which was, of course, hugely significant. But I think of the association that most people have in their mind with camp David.

The most famous diplomatic negotiations are for thousand nine hundred and seventy eight, when president Jimmy Carter invited the leaders of israel in egypt there, that ultimately he LED to the camp David accords know there is no doubt that this White house is trying to tap in to that eighty year history of diplomacy at this site. And I think just by having IT there, IT really elevates the relationship with japan in south korea. Jeffrey horning pointed this out to me to he's with the rain corporation .

by calling this meeting at camp David. IT really is underscoring the historic nature that messaging, that optics, is really being understood in both soul and tokyo.

So what are the specific commitments the countries are making today?

You know, I think they will certainly be playing into the symbolic of camp David. I'd ve been told that they are gona be announcing something called the camp David at principles. Of course, you don't playing into the name there.

They are announcing a commitment to step up security coordination, and that includes more comprehensive military exercises, the establishment of a crisis hotline and a pledge to console each other in he chAllenging moments. You know, really they're going to establish an understanding that a security chAllenge for one country poses a concern to the other within this trial or of relationship. And they're trying to deep in the coordination to make this a durable relationship that can endure domestic changes in any one of these three countries they've committed, of course, meeting annually going forward. I will see how .

this plays out and peers as a how and thinks us my pleasure.

The twenty thousand residents of yellow knife in canada's northwest territories are under evacuation orders as wildfires approached the city yesterday.

car stretched for miles along the two lane road out of town as residents tried to flee. Those who couldn't leave my car waited hours for church flights out of the area. This has been the worst wildfire season ever recorded in canada. There are now more than one thousand fires burning across the country.

Jamie doll is with canada's global news, and he joins me now from yellow night.

Good morning.

Good morning. So firefighters have been battling this wildfire for over a month. How far away is IT from yellow night at this point?

The last update received IT is but putting kilometres nine miles from the city limits, a yellow knife. But with these dry, warm conditions, lack of rain and the unpredictable winds, fire officials are concerned that you could be on the doorsteps of this capital city as early as the saturday.

This evacuation is a massive undertaking, a city of twenty thousand people in two days, getting everybody out.

How's IT going? Yeah, I mean, it's it's tall order, something that nobody and here has ever gone through. We have been seeing a lots of people lining nap outside in an evacuation center, whether to a register for a flight, for a flight out to the southern part of Alberta.

And some people waited in line for hours yesterday, you know, with their children and their pets and sitting under pursuit cases, only to be told at the end of about four hours or five hours for some that they were to go home. There was no more flights into come back this morning. So we did speak with the premier of the northwest territories who said at least three thousand people were airlifted out yesterday. But if, of course, they're hoping that number to grow.

evacuations going slow and steady. Please let so far people in main calm and roads out. We have line ups that the people that need flights, but we're trying to organize IT so we can stay open. As long as we can fly, we will keep people going.

Now the government's providing facilities for people who decide to shelter in place. Have you spoken to anyone who is staying either voluntarily because they can't leave for one reason another.

yeah, we have spoken with a lot of in front line workers, people that have to stay here, some hospital workers as well as, of course, the firefighters, but also government officials. But then there are people that have just decided on their own to stay. Now the great save lake is right here. And some people are just hoping that if you things get really dire, that there's just onna jump in their boats and maybe go camp on an island somewhere until things settled down at the mayor and the premier, everybody just waiting against that, primarily because there's not going to be in these services available and in case some anyone gets into trouble, and that's just going to be putting more stress on the first response that are still here.

I mean, how common is this now? This evacuations happening, how much this climate change excesses in the threat of wild vires is becoming a new Normal.

Yeah, you know, like I ve seen to the fourth fire that i've covered the season that people have been evacuated from. I myself was evacuated. Well, on some vacation, just a few weeks, go with my family.

So unfortunately, I think this is the new reality. There are a lot of old growth force in western canada with a lot of dead fall fuel. And as temperatures warm, this is what we're going to be seeing.

That's a reporter, Jamie doll, of canada's global news. Thank you.

Voters in ecuador head to the polls sunday. The crucial presidential and legislative elections are taking place. Less than two weeks after a presidential candidate was .

assessed for na, essencea had voted to fight the criminal gangs that have undermined safety and equal the country once had a reputation for relative stability, but in this election the biggest issue is crime.

We're joined now by npr. Carry con from her base in brazil. Hi, Carry.

hi. Good morning.

So kerrie tells a little more about fernando v of a sensitive, the journalist who was running for president in equator until he was killed.

Yeah, he was fifty nine years old when he was gunned down. That was what he just walked out of a campaign rally kito. That was on August nine, less than two weeks ago.

As he said, he was very well known. In equal, he was a dogged journalist to, for years investigated political corruption, especially back in the administration of left, his president of fail, korea. He had accused korea of multiple corrupt acts, the absence.

I went to exile for a while for a safety. Then he came back and he want to seat in congress, and he continued that anti corruption crusade. From there he was polling in the middle of the crowd er field of eight candidates. And recently that he was getting threats from the local crime bus tied to mexico's cino, a cartel. Replacing him is his longer friend and fellow journalist, Christian's, or data, who has pledged to continue that same antiquated pt platform that is murdered colleague promoted.

So you mention this local crime boss. I think a lot of people think of safe democracy, a tourist destination. So how bad is this type of criminal gain? violence?

It's quite remarkable to turn how bad the game situation is. Now in ecore, the murder rate there, once among the lowest in the america, now rivals mexico in venezuela off. It's important to look at the geography and note that equal sits right between south america's two big cocaine powerhouses, columban peru.

Its borders, or poorest government spending was recently slashed in the economy, is is suffering. Another thing is that ecuador has few VISA requirements, so people from Oliver can easily come in. And it's a dollar economy which AIDS money launder ing. Over recent years, big international cartels, mostly from mexico and even from albania, have paired with local gangs, and they've corrupted state actors, poor officials and police who facilitate the shipment of all this cocaine. The europe and of court, the united states, the local gangs have deliberated and now extort and terrorized the local population.

So this crime that you're describing clearly a big issue in the election. Do candidates, I, me, what are they saying to voters about how they would solve this? What are the choices voters are are making?

Voters are clearly not happy with their choices. There's a lot of apathy and indecision we're seen in the polls. There was recently a presidential debate with lots of criticism that candidates were long on promises to crack down on crime, but short on details.

The front runners, the only woman in the race, and she's closely aligned with left israfil korea who was convicted of corruption in exile. He could come back if he wins. There is a conservative candidate who is pushing a hard line security plan. He's gaining traction since the sassy ation and there's the same candidates, replacements or reta, whose name won't beyond the ballots and savory printed them. But electoral authority said any votes cast for the murdered candidate will go to zero.

The that's N P, R, A carrick on in riot. Thank you. Carry you will. And that's the first for friday.
