Israel's treatment of details is met harsh disapproval as the images circuit on social media and television.
Meanwhile, the us vetos united nations resolution calling for a ceasefire in gaza.
and with johns is now from television. Frank, thanks for being with us. It's good to be with these goat, please. For those who haven't seen them describe these images and what the reaction has been.
and I think of the most striking ones, with this video panning, dozens of men, they're sitting on on a street and the heads are out there, and they are underwear and their israeli soldiers milling about on the sidewalk. And egypt's foreign minister called the images catastrophic and said they degraded the man. And the international committee of the red cross also expressed a lot of concern.
How do the israelis respond?
Well, the army here, they're saying they discovered these in an area where civilians were supposed to be evacuated weeks ago, and they're now saying they are checking to see, you know, who of them might actually be a most fighters. Israeli TV air, the footage, which is thought to been taken by soldier's, but not entirely clear now, gaza resident detailed news organization that these men were sheltering with others in a school in northern gaza, and israeli forces just rounded them up and then force them to scripture their.
why would soldiers work them to strip down? Well, this is, apparently.
this is a, this is a common practice by israeli military forces, particularly. You see this in the west bank and they say it's to make sure there no bomb vester weapons and and we have seen similar images of this, uh, people in detention before. But I was talking to a man named lab. He's a retired brigadier general with israeli army a and I asked him about these images. This is what he told me.
These people should not be precise, because there.
And why do you think someone might have put them out out?
He might seem created is good to raise the, the, the moral in island. Maybe good is a kind of you against emphasize Brown .
is just speaking for himself, not the military. And we still don't know exactly where these images came from.
Is there any way to verify if they are in fact to much fighters .
not yet know israel has effectively about on journalists going to gaza um but it's clear already that some other people in these images are not from a mos and bs confirmed that one person shown is infected journalist for a media outlet close to cutter and our colleague lily foto SHE spoke with the united nations aid administrator in the united states and he actually recognize some of his own family members in the images and said, there's no way they're working for her.
Mos, uh, this man's name is honey. ama. don. He's based in washington and the honey said he recognized his brother my mood in the back of an israeli army truck and and he said, there's no way his brother could be working with a lot.
I an, I know my brother, he's kick and around two meters, you alone to be a fighter. You know, he's just a shopkeeper in gaza.
honey, he found the images revealing, and he also thinks they contain a political message.
I'm beginning to understand, this war is not just on how this is just a much bigger war when our, you know, our own existence, our own identity, and this is the images that they make, communicate, that were defeated people.
Frank, of course, the war began with a moscow, about twelve hundred people in southern israel, in a surprise attack on october seven. Since then, israeli aster EXO killed more than seventeen thousand people in goa, corcoran to the health ministry. there.
We know the U. S. Has been trying to put more pressure on israeli to reduce civilian casualties, which he is really, really .
responsible. Like, well, I think they are listening, and they say they're doing what they can, and they have to listen to the americans because the americans are providing the weapons. But israeli analysts this week told me that they think the us.
Is going to give more time to israel to cripple moss, even if IT costs more civilian lives and and generates more anger and criticism of the U. S. And israel here and and overseas and .
pays for lag foot until I V. Thanks so much for being with us.
Good to talk, scot.
The F, D, A approved two new treatments for the blood disorder, known as sickle cell disease.
It's big step for many people who suffer from the element.
as well as for the gene editing technique that's behind the treatment .
and be our health correspondent. Robs dan joins this, robs banks.
Being with this.
all my page is got. And of course, sickle sell is a genetic disorder, causes red blood cells to become to form single shaped. What are the effects of IT?
Yeah, it's a terrible disease. These misshapes single shape cells, kate, nurse the body with oxygen like they're supposed to, and then the shape and cells caused unpredictable tax of excitation pain and serious health problems are usually cut. Patients live short. The only cure is a bone marrow transplant in both patients just can't find a suitable donor for that.
How do these genetic treatments work?
So doctors remove cells from patients bodies, genetically modify those cells in the lab, and then infused billions of the modified cells back in. The patients with the modified cells produce a healthy form of a protein sick patients need called hemoglobin that creates Normal red blood cells and leave its the symptoms. One of the new treatments uses a more conventional approach, a modified version of a virus to ferial gene into patient cells.
The other uses the gene editing technic notice crisper to edit the gene in the cells. Thought you're right, remember of Victoria gray of four special ppi. SHE was the first six patient to get the gene editing trip in two thousand nineteen. N, P, R, broke that story and had exclusive access. The chronicle or experience i've talked with her about yesterday is approval.
I've had a new beginning. I no longer have to go to the hospital um because the means of your pain, i'm no longer tire and was like the energy and most of all I no longer have to fear dying and leaving my keys behind without a mother my life is limitless. Now is a real transformation.
Most of the patients who will undergo book trips so far.
It's so wonderful to hear her say that are there negative impacts for many of these treatments?
Well, you know there's still lots of questions. You know, one of the question is, will these treatments actually translate into a longer lifespan for patients? Could there be any long term artifacts that just haven't shown up yet? In fact, there are is already some concern that the approach that uses the virus may increase the risk for blood cancer.
And another big question is, will patients be able to get these new treatments? They're expensive. One will cost two point two million dollars per patient, the other three point one million, and they're very complicated and difficult to go through. So IT will be hard to get from many patients, especially less afternoon patients in this country and the millions of patients in africa and asia where sicle cell is most common.
All of this being noted rap, how significant a moment is this for gene editing?
It's a big deal. You know, it's a pretty remarkable how quickly generating went from being experimental techniques, something that is actually helping people. I talked about this with Jennifer douda from the university of california, berkeley. SHE shared a nobel Price for helping discover crisper.
It's only the beginning.
It's an amazing time.
Gene editing is already being tested for a long list of diseases ranging from real, vey rare genetic conditions like muscular defy to more common health problems like cancer and heart disease.
And very health correspondent robs time.
and thank so much .
you best got.
Even though president bidens planned to cancel student debt failed in court, a different approach .
is yielding results. A new repayment plan .
called for nearly three million borrowers. Mufty payments will be zero as november.
And there is corry Turner. John, just cry. Thanks for being with us.
Thanks for hame scape.
Thanks, of course, for saving an available education. How are these zero dollar payment possible?
So bare with me here for second. IT is fundamental a repayment plan, that basis of barbers monthly payment on the income. So the less they make, the less they have to pay each month.
Now this isn't a new idea, but what is new is saved as a lot more generous than anything that's come before. And that's true in a few different ways. So for example, monthly learn payments are not based on all of a barr's income just on what is considered extra or directionally.
And one thing that saved does is that increases how much income is considered off limits. Short hand, that means a lot more powers will now qualify for essentially a zero dollar monthly payment because the federal government says you don't have any directionally income. Like we said, the intro of the five and a half million bwh who are now enrolled in save, more than half, almost three million of them have one of these zero dollar monthly payments. I should also say, Scott, save stands out because whatever interest is not covered by your monthly payment, especially for zero dollars, that interest now gets wiped away.
But let me ask your council on something that one of our producers here has student loans in world and save and discovered that her monthly payment just came down by about twenty dollars. Let me you on the pot.
why? Let me get my Crystal ball here. No, actually, there are two potential explanations here, Scott. First, as part of this huge transition of tens of millions barbers back to repayment, I will say loan services and the education department have made a lot of mistakes when IT comes to calculating barbers monthly payments under safe.
So sadly, that wouldn't surprise me if that's the explanation, but there's another explanation and that is everyone and rolling and safe needs to understand that probably the biggest change it's really going to save borrower's money hasn't even happened yet. So this is pretty nerdy, bare with me here, that monthly payment math that we were talking about earlier, I said save messes with IT in two ways. So as we said, IT exams more of powers income from being considered directionally.
But then right now, barr's payments are ten percent of that discretionary income of whatever is left right will in july next year twenty twenty four for undergraduate bours, that's gonna drop instead of ten percent of your direction. Ary income, it's gonna go down to five percent, which might down a little weird initiated. But what a means for bowers is basically it's going to cut their monthly payments in half. So folks like you're producer thinking my payments and all those laws, I thought I would be just weight.
嗯, that sounds generous, but how much is are .
going to cost? So we know from the pen warton budget model that the Price tag could be as much as for heard and seventy five billion dollars across ten years, which is a lot of money. And it's one reason why many republicans are, I think it's overstating IT to say, furious about the save plan congresswoman virginio fox, who's the republican share of the house education committee scotch hates, saved with the heat of a thousand sun. I honestly like on the house floor earlier this week, he said, safe is, quote, president budd's game of ruling by executive decree, pinning the tab on the taxpayer SHE called the reckless inflationary and illegal. In fact, house republicans just tried to overturn the safe plan, but a similar effort has already failed in the senate, and president biden has made clear, even if he does get to his desk, he will be to IT amp.
Curry Turner.
