capacity to do this. We have an obligation.

but not the ability to do so, as long as the houses paralyzed while IT has no speaker. So what's the way forward for the U.

We have a glimpse today of life for civilians in what israel's defense minister is called a complete size of gaza.

Israel is responding to an attack out of gaza by hamas, which killed thirteen hundred people. The bombardier and sea has killed more than twenty seven hundred palestinians. And for those who survived, food and water are running out as israel has shot off the supply both and .

paba rawl has been talking with people in gaza. Welcome back the program. Hi, what are you hearing?

IT has been sheer terror and a struggle to survive. Hundreds of thousands of people in northern goes left their home over the weekend following israeli evacuation notices. They drop leaflets from the sky telling people to leave their homes.

And so many people were walking by foot. Children were walking from miles heading, moms were Carrying their babies. And there's no guarantees of safety to the areas in the south that they have evacuated to. Israel continues to bomb areas across the gaza strip, and there have been reports of entire families being killed in the south over the weekend.

And the palestinian minister of health is a third of all those killed since the beginning of this war have been children, and there also people who simply cannot leave and evacuate south even if they wanted to. Doctors and nurses are still treating extreme of wounded from continuous israeli air strikes, including in gazza city's biggest hospital, l shift. We are also talking about more than nine thousand people have been wounded since the start of this war.

Many are on life support. There are people are disabled, elderly。 So I reached a woman named Nancy in gazza city. She's stuck there with a baby and no way to get out. Let's take .

a little n where he told 下面 你们 看到。

那么 近 的那。 So she's saying SHE has no transportation, no cars able to take her out. Neighbor od is full of people that haven't left either.

She's running low on baby formula and diapers and water. And that is the other major crisis unfolding now for goza. People are drinking seawater and contaminated water. And that is because gaza has been under a complete israeli ized for an entire week now with nothing coming in, no fuel, food or water and the main power planet shut down and hospitals on their last days of fuel for generators.

I'm just through everything you've told me, you're talking about the hardship imposed by an evacuation order. In theory, the evacuation order is to protect civilians so that israel's military can do what IT once without killing civilians. But people are saying they're being harmed by that, being harmed by the block aid.

So where does the united states fit into all this? Doesn't the U. S. A. IT supports israel.

but does not want civilian term. Well, we have been hearing for the past two days that there are efforts for dozers board a crossing with egypt to open, and that would allow some five hundred to six hundred americans, palestinian ans and other foreigners to leave. But egypt insisting, if that border crossing opens, aid has to get in from egypt.

But we've just heard this morning from israel prime minister office saying no deal for a ceasefire in the south of gaza has been reached. So no foreigner coming out and no aid going in. Now egypt has a huge convoy of eight trucks waiting there at the border, ready to bring in fuel, food, ambuLances, surgical kits, medications and coLoring tablets for water. Doctors without borders says currently there are no pain killers and hospitals, so you have people and children screaming and pain from full body burns, several land hatred bones. This is the situation now.

Gaza and israel, of course, is by no means done with its Operation. What is IT planning next?

Well, we know there are hundreds of thousands of israeli reserve s at the border, and there's talk of an imminent ground invasion into gaza. And after all of what is unfolded, israel says IT is still only the beginning of its response to the hamas attacks. The U.

S. Has made clear its stands by israel. IT is not calling for calm or urging restraint at this time, but israel has said repeatedly, IT will destroy hamas's and organization, disarm, make IT unable to govern. But how that happens is unclear.

Ah thanks so much. Thank you. That's the battery in.

OK, the White house plans to ask congress this week for billions of dollars in over spending .

your money to help both israel and ukraine to defend themselves. President biden said you was assistance in both cases is necessary. In an interview that aired on .

sixty minutes last night, the united states, america, the most powerful oundle in the history and the world, and the history of the world, the history of the world we can take care of. Both of these are still maintain our overall international defense.

but it's not at all clear that this eight package can pass the housework present.

and senior White house correspondent mark is following this time. Good morning. What is the White house asking for?

Well, at this point, we don't know precisely how much the White house will tell congress they need. But back in August, they asked for twenty four billion dollars to get ukraine through the end of this calendar, and that hasn't come through yet. Now we expect that number to increase, and of course, for the administration to add on military assistance to israel.

We know that officials from the administration were up on capital hill laying the groundwork for this request, and we also know that there is wide bipartisan support within congress. But a relatively small and vocal faction of house republicans oppose more aid to ukraine have held IT up so far. Others have major reservations, and that includes jim Jordan, the current pic of the house republicans to be their speaker. We don't know if you actually get the job. National security council spokesman john corby says that the White house believes they don't have time on their side.

The runway is not forever here in terms of not only Operations on the ground and israel and ukraine, but our ability to continue to provide security distance to both parties.

The president and allies, congress from both sides of the aisle are still looking for ways to get this aid past, and they are not giving up.

But if the runway is not forever, to use john carbis phrase, what are the stakes if the president cannot get the united days to keep the commitment? Well.

every foreign policy expert I spoke within the past couple of weeks of this, but a bunch of them said that both america's allies and adversity are watching closely. I asked leon banana, who served in key roles in both the clinton and obama administrations, whether president bindon's reputation was on the line.

But it's not just the credibility of joe biden, is the credibility of the united states. And the last thing that this country needs to do in a dangerous world is send our adversary a message of weakness.

The argument is that russia and china and iran are all watching the us. Resolve and looking for the alliance that president biden is so proud of helping to build in europe and beyond, looking for those alliances to falter for fatigue.

to set IT. okay. Well, i'd like to know what the public has to say about all this. And if they have any sway, what do americans think right now about the ukraine and eight israel?

Well, a new pbs news hour in pr maris poll indicates that a majority of americans want the us. To voice strong support for israel, but this is also new and the extent of us assistance is not clear yet, so we don't know how the public will land on military aid with ukraine um a new chicago council lump affairs poll finds public support has a slip since the earliest days of the war in twenty twenty two. But a significant majority of americans still support providing assistance. So as a significant majority in congress, but as we said, a small faction in congress can really dumb things up.

M, P, R, senior widest correspondent team key. Thanks so much for your insights. You're welcome. Now in this country, police have linked the war between his real and a mos to what they call a hate crime in illinois, according to police outside of chicago, a seventy one year old man stabbed and killed a six year old boy. He also injured the boy's mother.

And although police have not shown their evidence for this, they say the attacker was motivated by the victim's muslim faith and by the war thousands of miles away. In a statement, president biden and first lady jill biden said, the attack boat stands against our fundamental values, freedom from fear for how we pray, what we believe and who we are. Poll's populist righting government appears to be on its way out after eight years in power.

Yeah, think so. Exit polling shows the ruling law and justice party, which has stely chipped away a democratic institutions, is suffering a dramatic that during this rule the party has had a frosty relationship with its fellow european union .

members that may now change npr, rob schmidt is in poland, capital warsaw. The rob money staff. What are the results so far?

While existing es are showing that while the ruling law justice party receive the highest percentage, the vote around thirty six percent, that is not enough for them to form a government, and that's because the only other party that would form a coalition with all on justice did not get enough vote. So the left center civic coalition, headed by former eu council president and former polish prime minister Donald tools k, is poised to form a coalition government with two other parties. And last night .

to .

declared Victory.

And Steve, he's saying here, nobody can see us anymore. We have won back our democracy. We've won freedom, and we've won back our beloved place.

I could hear the word democracy, even in the polish, there is pretty clear. So how has law and justice, the party that got a lot of votes, but seems to have lost.

responded well last night. The party had yet a sa kitchen ski. Congratulations ted, his party for gardening the most votes. But he did acknowledge that his party would have a difficult time forming government if the examples are correct.

However, people responding otherwise.

shock in jubilation. Steve, political scientist I ve spoken to here, are all surprised by this result. They were not expecting this. Here's political analyst atomic tic.

This is a huge and for the polar democracy and for the polar society as well. I think we are looking at to turn out of seventy three percent, which is a record breaking figure, uh, ten percentage points higher than than during the first three election of nineteen and ninety nine. So this is a tremendous win for for the whole country and for its citizens.

And Steve, I want to underlying something that he said here, turn out yesterday was seventy three percent. No election in polish history has come even close to that, not even in thousand nine hundred eighty nine, when pulls voted out communist from government, voters were in line at some polling stations until three in the morning this morning. And that says a lot about how fed up voters are of this current government.

What made voters fed .

up while law justice has spent the past eight years rigging the judicial system and public media to serve its purposes and to keep itself in power. And in twenty twenty, this largely catholic conservative government also banned abortion in poland. And it's interesting IT was after that when law justice says popularity began to slide and slid from forty two percent to thirty five percent, and IT never recovered. So in essence, the abortion that was, for so many voters.

the final straw. What would this imply for other countries, given that poland is one of a lot of countries where IT seemed that democratic norms were slipping?

Well, populism and nationalism are spreading throughout europe. And should these results hold you to show the world that this trend is not inevitable and that voters can put a stop to IT, as they seem to have here in poland, IT also means that the european union, that again has a close partner in warsi, and that the difficult work of restoring a democracy will begin again for .

the forty million people here import.
