The weekend attack on israel by hundreds of mouse fighters has touched off a war with heavy, casual.
israeli media say, fighters associated with the moss killed at least seven hundred people in their homes at a dance festival on the streets in army bases. Video show militants surrounding up men, women and children, taking them from southern rael and moving them to gaza. Israeli has launched air strikes into gaza, killing more than four hundred people there. And this is only the beginning. A third day of war is underway.
Imperance, Daniel astrium is with us now from televise. Daniel, hello. Hi me. So IT just seems as if there are new developments every hour. What can you tell us about what's been going on there this morning?
I mean, just a few seconds ago, Michelle, I heard very loud boom at the window here in television. There have been as sirens, a sirens, rocket fire towards central israel. But the army told reporters this morning that israeli troops, we're still battling hamas militants in at least seven israeli residential communities, one israeli family was still being held hostage by hamas men, and that hamas militants still continue to influence from gaza into israel. Um i've been seeing all three of the country, even in central television police, setting up checkpoints with their guns locked aimed just in case you know, someone shows up, uh, a militant perhaps IT is unfair to people here. Just the depth in the scale of these events so much .
has been making IT known that they have taken passages back to gaza. I think all of us saw these images this weekend. Do we know anything about how many hostages there are?
Israel saying at least dozens are being held hostage in gaza, their reports that that could be even more, maybe even in in the hundreds. We don't have a clear number, but hamas has released a video of an israeli grandmother parade on a gaza street.
We've seen hamas videos of Young children they say they're holding, and many israeli simply don't know, are their relatives dead? Are they taken of? And especially when IT comes to this dance festival arrive this weekend that hamas attacked their reports here of at least two hundred and sixty people killed there, which would be the deadliest single attack on civilians and israel ever. I spoke with a hova mazel, her twenty one year old daughter A D was at that festival and she's missing.
I don't know if he's did. I don't know if he's hurt. I know nothing. I I don't know if somebody captured her. We started getting receiving, like from I, from that. They are keeping my daughters and they they say that they have my daughter, my beautiful daughter, and they hear screaming of girls.
SHE doesn't feel her fake calls, but we've been speaking to others rael I, who receive videos of their loved one's captive inside gaza. There's just a lot of confusion about what happened. Israeli authorities aren't publishing a lot. They're not publishing the names of civilians killed or missing. It's homos, Michelle, that's putting out the stream of videos.
This has been launching heavy air strikes on gas that there are two million people. There are people in tight quarters. Its dense.
What are they facing? Well, they are facing no electricity in gaza cities. Since yesterday, electricity has been cut there because of the israeli bombings, and israel also cut off its electrical supply to gaza.
Gaza main hospital says it's running low on supplies. Israel bomb at least one thousand targets in gaza, including many mosques overnight, and our producer in gaza, ana zabala, visited one of them. Uh, the mineral was completely toppled on to about a dozen neighbor homes, which were partially destroyed.
And as he was walking through the rubble, he found one man, hardman. He was scavenging what he called from his home, his favourite pair of pants, A T shirt, glasses, a phone charger in a photo album. And he said that he was in bed at night when a pieces of the wall fell on him. In the israeli attack.
he told us he escaped .
with his family, but five were killed in that attack. He saw people under rubble, and he said they got no warning from israel's army, which sometimes the israeli army does give warnings to gaza civilians before the attack in a briefing, and israeli army spokesman was asked about that and said israel trying to avoid civilian casualties, but at the same time, he said didn't give israel a warning about its attacks and that, quote, israel, to change our paradise.
That is. Imp, Daniel estrin, intelligent IO, thank you. welcome. How did homes fighters plan and Carry out such a large attack and keep its secret until the end?
Yes, you think about the different aspects of this attack, the parade lighters, the fighters getting over around walls. The scale of the attack likely took months to plan, and israeli security forces had all that time been focused heavily on.
So to trying to understand this, we have empty national security correspondent greg miry on along with us now. Greg, good morning.
Good morning to share.
So you're joining us from sea ireland, georgia, and you're there because you're attending a conference of current and format national security officials. I'm sure this wasn't on the agenda to begin with. But what are you hearing there?
We all miss out a real sense of shock. Corn officials are saying pretty tight lip, but the former officials say they're just done for a number of reasons. I think, first of all, how did all these weapons get into gaza? The homos arsenal has always seem to have limits in the past, and yet homos has fired hundreds, perhaps even a couple thousand, rockets into israel this time.
Second, how did israel's domestic intelligence agency should, but not know about these plans, are sort of this long standing belief that israeli could listen almost any phone call or communications in gaza? IT has a large number of palestinian format working for them there. And how come the israeli military wasn't Better positioned when this attack began? Israel Normally has a very robust force on in southern israel outside gaza.
So yes, those are all the questions we have. Can we answer any of those questions at this point? I mean, do we know anything about how did they do this in such large numbers, at such scale and with such coordination?
right? Well, remember, guys, is a small territory, maybe five miles wide, twenty five miles long, and israel has this very sophisticated border fence that even includes an underground wall to guard against him as the militants digging a tunnel.
The fence is they done in the past, but is our colleague, Daniel astern has reported militants cut through the fence, are blasted through the fence and multiple points, and in the past, just a single breach would have been considered a major fAiling. And israeli soldiers at the border of written on social media that that militants overtook their base, killing soldiers, and there were fewer troops there because that was a holiday h over this weekend. And there's also a talk of of what role homos named patron iran might have played. We know they've had this very close relationship for many years, but not clear what around did, if anything, at this point.
as a great, you've cover the region and you've cover this conflict for many years. Can you tell us a bit more about how homos has developed these capabilities?
Yeah, the palestinian first launched a major uprising in two thousand against the israeli occupation. And that's when homos began firing these rockets. They were crude, homemade weapons.
They travel just a few miles. Very inaccurate. I remember the israeli military saying at the into the day, he must fired ten rockets in five had israel.
Well, what about the other five couple? Parents didn't make IT out of gaza. Couple probably landed in the medical rani, an sea, so homos s even cutting down light poles and using them as their launching tubes.
So a lot of these rockets were just made an auto repair shops, but bit by bit a mosque. Better. They get technical help from abroad. And of these parts have been smuggled in the southern gaza through these tunnels to egypt. Now they have this huge arsenal capable hitting .
deep inside israel. That is grey. great.
Thank you. Sure thing. The show.
While the world focused on violence in israel, in gaza this weekend, a series of earthquakes struck western afghanistan.
So far, the taliban government says more than two thousand people are dead, and rescue efforts are ongoing.
On the line with us now to tell us more is P. S. International correspondent dea hai. She's based in mumbai and covers afghanistan.
A welcome.
So it's been more than two days since the earthquake. S, what can you tell us about the what's the latest information you have for us?
Well, today there was an off to shock, actually, thousands pouring into the streets of heroic. That's the biggest city in the area. But by far the hardest place was from saturday.
It's the remote street called in dejan. We're about a dozen villages. Where are you is to rubble, most of the casualties of women and children, a lot of the number outside farming the land.
When this happened, and I spoke to universe field officer for western afghanistan, sadig brahimi says the dead included more than five hundred children. He says the death toll is likely to be far higher because people are quickly burring. They did. They aren't formally reporting them. He says so many women and children died because when the first earthquake struck, they rushed .
into their homes on the body, their homes, and unfortunately, earthquake continued and the house is started collapsing. And that's why the fatality among the women and children is the highest.
They thought bombs were falling nearby because that was their reality through two decades of war between western black forces in the taliban.
It's af, especially on such an awful weekend already. Are people still looking for survivors?
Yes, IT breaking for me. And he described to me village that he saw.
it's shocking to see that not a single building is actually standing just rubble on the ground. And people were actually digin trying to see if there anybody trap, uh, to get them out.
He says people are using shovels. They've got nothing else, but mostly they're not finding people.
So you have been telling us about the worst affected area.
what's IT like in other areas. The earthquake also shocked the western city of heroic, and since then families have been sleeping in cost, mosques and talks. The thing is, the taliban had actually banned women from entering talks a while ago, and they've loosen that restriction now. Ibrahim from the taliban officials have also claimed, asked for hell. And that suggests how big this calamity is and how dial.
So is international aid coming in? The taliban have been .
reluctant to accept IT. Yes, some a is coming in through the united nations, the world held organization, and and the taliban is also on the ground. Theyve dispatched the whole army court to health.
Ordinary afghan are donating food, blankets. Even they are on blood. The reaction is, once the emergency phases over, will money come in to help people rebuild their lives?
That is mp S D D A. Thank you so much for your reporting.
