This latest war between israel and homos has killed more than four thousand people, making IT the deadliest of five gaza wars, and things .
could get worse once israel expected ground invasion begins. Will hear what the situation is.
I am Michelle mart. That's a Martina, and this is up first from npr news. Some western countries are calling for an investigation into the explosion at a gaza hospital that killed hundreds of people. Israeli and palestinian officials are blaming each other for the incident that has made a mass protest across eruptions. So what do we know .
about what really happened? And congress remains paralyzed because for the second time, ohio congressman jim Jordan failed to get enough votes to become how speaker, where does this leave his bid for the gavel? Stay with us. We've got all the news. You need to start your day.
Western leaders are showing unified support of israel and its war against homos. Yesterday.
U. S. President will biden visited television and met with israeli prime minister Benjamin t on yahoo o and his war cabinet. This morning, british prime minister russia soon a landed in israel, the visits fallout. Nearly two weeks of war since homos launched a surprise attack that killed at least fourteen hundred people, israel has retaliated with air strikes in gaza and has killed thousands more.
For more were joined by mp r. Jatoi in jerusalem. So I was a world's visit for president by, and what are the many takeaway?
There are three. The first was a firming again, his unweave ing commitment to israel's security by in met with grieving families and first responders and television, he acknowledge the pain here and set the scale of those october of attacks for a country the size of israel was like fifteen september eleventh attacks. And then that leads really to the second take away, which is he also had words of caution for israel.
There are diverse opinions here about israel's treatment of palestinians and the war, but there's also spread anger and a feeling that israel's survival is dependent on wiping out hamas. So president biden said he understood there must be justice. But he also said, quote, while you feel that rage, don't be consumed by IT.
After nine eleven, we were enraged in the united states while we saw justice and got justice, we also made mistakes.
and he followed that by also saying that the vast majority of palestinians are not homeless. And the timing of all of this was less than twenty four hours after a catastrophic blast at a hospital in gaza, where thousands of people were sheltering. The palestinian health ministry says around four hundred and seventy people were killed in that last many, if not most, were children.
Israel blames an air militant rocket but palestinian, the rest of the ddd east, including the governments here, say IT was israel. And so the suffering of palms, inie and gaza is on display every day that this war continues. And that leads to the third take. Away from bid's visit. He got israel's war cabinet and the prime minister to agree to let some humAnitarian aid into gaza.
So when my that get in.
bitten says that could get in friday, israel bomb the roads leading a goths border crossing with egypt, a huge convoy aid trucks is ready to go in. So there, those repairs on those roads could happen today. But bitten says IT will only at most be twenty trucks at first, and the U.
N. Will do the distribution inside gaza. And he warned that if any of that goes to hames, the aid will stop.
Israel also says this aid is only for southern gaza, so gaza biggest hospital and everyone in the north might not get any of this aid. And israel IT did not say if fuel could enter. So that means hospital generators could still shut down.
The only electricity for most people on goza now is coming from generators. I talked to this name at hand in gazza city where, uh, israel told people to evacuate SHE says there is nowhere else to go south in these so called safe stones aren't safe either. Empires producer down their sock kids being pulled from the rubber of their homes in recent days. But let's listen to what I have told me about how .
hard things are at the last time that the drinking water is yesterday in the morning. Think here is, get worse every day. Day is harder than the lost. There is no blaze here and gather. We can go.
We keep saying israel's expected ground invitation of guys and the president has coming gone. When might that happen?
Well, there are hundreds ds of thousands of reserves have been called up at israel's border. But in recent days, israel has indicated there may or may not be a ground invasion. I think there is real fears this could lead to heavy losses among israeli soldiers and intractable situation in gaza, and that this could also draw other militant .
groups and involve the region. Thank you. We stay in the middle with the ongoing dispute over who was responsible for that deadly explosion at the gaza city hospital on tuesday.
That's right. More information about the incident is emerging, but it's far from conclusive, and the israeli and in palestinians are still blaming .
each other to break down. We're joined by M. P.
R. National security correspondent greg mary. Okay, the explosion, greg. How much do we know about what happened .
and what cost IT? Well, there are photos, videos, eyewitness accounts. The M I M P R colleagues have been going through all the available evidence. But what we don't have yet is clarity.
Uh, photo show an explosion dug a relatively small hole in the concrete in the parking lot of the olie arab hospital. A couple cars were destroyed. Uh, fire burned several down to the middle frame.
Um the hospital has broken windows, pock mark walls and some missing roof tiles, but the hospital didn't have in any real structural damage. A A palestinian doctor there at the time of the explosion spoke to M, P, R and describe a horrific scene with many people killed just outside the hospital. But he said, no one was killed inside the hospital. Just a few people wounded.
You said outside the hospital, why are there so many people outside of the hospital?
Well, you know, of course, the hospital's full of patients wounded in the war, so relatives and friends were present, but many other gaza, several thousand came to the hospital grounds, hoping IT would be a safe place to shelter. Uh, large group was gathered in the in the court yard at the time of the blast, according to with multiple .
witnesses there OK. So all the people who died were outside of the hospital. Does any of this any clues to who may fire this weapon?
Well, if nothing for certain, but weapons experts say that the limited size of the blast in the parking lot suggested a smaller weapon was used, so that could be a rocket fire by the palestinians. Also, video show a large fireball at the moment of impact, which could be rocket fuel that the israeli, say a militant palestinian infection, islam mic jahr, not a moss fired tin rockets toward israel. They say one of those rockets misfired and crashing into the hospital grounds. And that's the cause of all these casual .
and palestinians, I would assume, are not going with that version.
right? absolutely. They say israel has been striking almost every corner of gaza with relate less air strikes that have killed many civilians, and that this was just part of that bombing campaign.
Now we should note that israel air strikes are often conducted with very powerful bombs and missiles, and they tend to leave very large craters that can take down a large section of a building, in some cases, the entire building itself. But israel also has smaller weapons in its arsenal. So it's not yet possible to rule in or rule out all the various possibilities here.
yeah. And during his visit to israel yesterday, president by said that he supported the israeli version of event so what reason great did you give right?
The president said that this was based on information he received from the pentagon um but neither he nor the pintado on provided any details. President of biden said he again thought I was an arent palestinian rocket. And at the White house, the national security council said in a brief statement that IT appeared israel is not responsible based on the intelligence available at this point, but they stress that they were still looking for further information.
right? The P. R. Greg miry.
Thanks for thank.
It's dasia vu all over again in washington, the house of representatives again held a vote to like a new speaker and again, republic anoma jim Jordan failed to secure the votes to get the gavel and the .
ohio congresswomen actually lost support. On yesterday's second ballot, twenty two republicans voted for someone else that's up from twenty on tuesday.
N, P, R, congressional respondent dua walls joined us. Now, a kind, like watching ground. How's day right? Kind of feels that way. You think anything i'll change today. Will the house finally elect a speaker?
We could see that same movie again. I mean, a third ballot for speaker could happen later today, but right now, no republican has the two hundred and seventeen votes needed to be elected speaker. There is no sign that any of the twenty two members in that top group that voted against Jordan are gona change their votes. One of them, arko republican Steve walmart, predicted a third ballot would get, quote, a lot worse for Jordan.
And you know, there's been some real blow back to the strategy of jim Jordan's Alice trying to wear people down and and get them to vote for .
Jordan is really backfired. And even last night, congresswoman marian net Miller mix from iowa, who supported Jordan on the first ballot but voted against him on the second, denounce the tactic from Jordan allies and actually shut out fellow members of congress pronouncing them. He said he received death threats and said, one thing I cannot stomach or support is a bully.
Jordan condemn the threats, but something he's not enough. A lot of these hold outside this pressure campaign from brightening media, targeting lawmakers, flooding their offices with calls is a reason why the resistance is hardening. And perhaps .
spending our talks get any more serious about democrats maybe working with republicans. And I kind of as a power sharing agreement.
there are some who are pushing this idea that patric mckenney of north CarOlina, he's the speaker protection who's presiding over the election, could get new authority to do things like bring up bills to avoid a shut down later to approve aid. Israel, a growing group of republicans, say it's important now to have a temporary speaker, at least for some period of times of the house can function. McCarry insists he's focused on getting a republican majority to elect a republican speaker, but he seemed to crack the .
door open to his role. Maybe changing a my role here is to be determined, but i've constructed that is nearly as the rules say I should, and we can transact business until we like to speakers.
But any resolution to do this would have to pass the house with democratic support. The minority leader hocking Jeffery y. says. He's open, but the details would still have to be worked out in terms of how long machinery could serve and .
what he could do. Now I know president biden is going to address the nation from the oval office, and I can ask for money war in ukraine and israel. What does this this function in the house you remain for? Congress approving those requests mean the .
hurdles just that much higher. Without a speaker, nothing can happen. There is brought by person support for approving money for israel and for ukraine. Senate leaders for both parties want to tie them together. But jim Jordan and a lot of other house republicans voted against any more money for ukraine. That's a big reason why some republicans who support aid continuing or running out are more openly talking about this idea of installing a temporary speaker at mp.
r. Deo walsh. Thanks for keeping up with a solar do.
