Air in stone with allies has been riding out the storm in palm springs. Air in lots of concerns about high winds, heavy rain, the mountains maybe causing some floods, either in coastal cities or desert communities. How bad as IT been?
Yeah, there was significant flooding across the region. But as expected, mountain and desert communities, especially the sandburr dino mountains and the cochlea valley here where i'm at, saw the heavy est impacts. And most flash flooding here in the the soils are so dry that they can't absorb this much water at once.
And many streets are actually part of the flood control system here. So they are expected to flood during heavy rains, but there hasn't been as widespread and impact to life as officials originally worried. IT seems like the public largely heard the message to prepare ahead of time and stay home, which helped the light. So that old ad, Better safe than sorry, seems to have been the wisdom of the.
yeah, I went nowhere on sunday. Normally I be out, but I didn't. Now a lot of rain all over something. california. What can you tell us about where this storm has maybe packed the biggest punch?
yes. So this is the first tropical storm to actually land in southern california in several decades. So it's fair to say most residents across the region have no living memory of what IT is to experience something like this.
The storms have broken daily rainfall records across southern california. So from downtown L. A. To palm springs, here in palm springs, for example, we saw more than half a years worth of rain in just one day. And as you know, schools in the region have also decided not to start class today. Roads have turned to rivers, and there have been dangerous, muddy to brief lows in burn scars and waterways.
A emergency responders have had to rescue and evacuate dozens of people, including a mobile home park here in the coach ella valley and the homeless and campmate along the sd ago river and the city of palm springs. Even how it's nine one one call go down though, though people can still text. But you know, the worst of the storm was largely within what governments and emergency responders have expected and prepared for, and there really haven't been widespread threats to life.
And then in the middle, the day yesterday, just as everyone getting ready for all the weather, all the wet weather there was at the earthquake, which, of course, here and I slept right through, was the hashtag heroique. Tell us about that.
Yeah, that's gala fora for you, right? eh? Yeah, a heroic ake. It's been reported IT was a five point one magnitude earthquake near ohi inventer account that's about eighty miles northwest of L. A.
And know there were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries and IT also wasn't related to the storm. IT wasn't related to the tropical storm. IT was just a goold fashioned coincidence.
It's got to be a six to wake me up, unfortunately. So what's the day .
ahead look like at this point? We're only dealing with pregnant of the storm, which we're anticipating will be downgraded to a tropical depression and is is expected to continue to die down this morning. Skies down here in palm springs are expected to be back to their usual Sunny by early afternoon through monday.
It'll be moving up into nevada, into the pacific northwest, dying out on the way. So one, southern californians wake up today. The damage assessments can begin in full.
absolutely. Erin stone with member station elias. Thanks a lot here.
things say.
Automobile, a reformist candidate, beat all the odds and is now the country's president elect.
Berto evo has been an anti corruption cruise der. In a notoriously corrupt when we're people, I can have been persecuted by ruling elite. Remarkably though, IT appears that he won in a landslide with a twenty percentage point lead M.
P, S, ater put out. That is on the line with us from water on a city either. Let's start with the streets. What's been the reaction to the results?
Well, look right now, it's very quiet because it's early morning here. But just a few hours ago, IT was one big party, thousands of watermelon, and took to the streets, and they waited for the president elect to emerge from a hotel balcony. And I just want to play some type of what I was like.
There works in the sky with modern cyclists. People have the gotten more and flag. This is a moment for a lot of million people.
I think a lot of people here feel that they have a defeated of government that have been taking power for the last few years. We did IT. We are the number.
But SHE says that what she's feeling right now is that democracy has been. depended. 我 还要 飞。
So at the end there, I asked her, do you think tomorrow will be different? And he said, we have faith, and we vote IT for him on faith.
So tell us about this outsider who won by a huge margin. Mean, who is he? What is background?
What does that mean for the country? But is a congressman, but of a tiny party that no one really knew until a couple of months ago. He's an academic, a biologist, and he's the son of what they are, Alice, first democratically elected president. He was also the unlikeliest candidate to win the selection. And that's because, one, he had no money.
He was the only candidate who didn't have billboards here, and two, he was running an anti corruption campaign in a country where the ruling class had been going on a hunt for people fighting corruption over the past few years, independent prosecutors, judges, journalists, civil rights offenders. I have been fleeing automatic because the government has been using public institutions to persecute them. And every analyst i've spoken to says, but not what I look, has the chance to be a circuit break. Er he has the chance to stop watermelons democratic backslide. And in his Victory speech.
that's exactly what he said. He said the votes were counted in what the .
people say is enough enough with this corruption.
I think is though there's always a lot of hope for change in some light american countries. What are the chance? Is there a real change .
coming to waterloo? Well, I mean, president, like Better matter would have a tiny minority in congress. So he's going to have to make deals to govern.
And he also has a justice department that he won't really control and then in the past few days has been threatening to bring charges against him. It's worth noting that those threats have been widely viewed as being politically motivated. And then there's his rival. And that thought has not yet conceded. But the president of the country has congratulated ted at law and said he's ready to help him with the transition.
That's M. P. S. either. But about that in what about city things for keeping track this?
Thank you.
Lawmakers in tena sea come together this week to talk about public safety.
The governor called a special session of the legislature this after three nine year old children and three adults were killed in a school shooting in nashville less spring in the days after the killings at the covenant school, hundreds of high school students walked out their classrooms in protest, and large crowds demonstrated for gun control and tennesse capital. W.
P, L, and political reporter plays gaining. It's been covering all this. He joins us now from nash field blaze. The special session was supposed to be about gun reforms. Republic and supermajority in the legislature has been saying for weeks that they want to focus on other public safety concerns. So is meaningful gun reform even on the table?
No, nothing meaningful at all. Actually right now in the state, there's no permit needed, so Carry for anyone eighteen or order in no penalties for unsafe gun storage. In the tiny sa.
Bureau investigation shows that the state leads the nation in guns dollar from cars. The biggest thing around guns is expected to happen. This legislation around the promotion of the state paid PSA that will encourage owners, gun owners, that is, to lock out their guns.
Paired with that, the governor wants lawmakers to pass a law that will let the state hand out free gn logs on request and make sales of guns. Guns saves tax free. One thing that many people wanted to see was a red flag law to take guns away from people who are considered a dangers of themselves or others.
But republicans have called the idea a non starter, and it's not expected to get heard during the special session. I should mention that this is going to be a short session. We're hearing that it'll .
rap up on thursday now. okay. So quick are not talking about guns and what will they be talked about?
Yes, the main topics will be mental health judge sentencing. In background jex. There is one mental health bill that would require treatment facilities to notify law enforcement IT if they released in individual who was involuntarily committed for psychiatric care.
There's a proposal that would raise the age at which youth can have their records extension and lower the age in which they can be sentenced as adults. Now, juvenile crime in the state is down, but crime committed with a firearm is up. Tennesee R.
T. Has some of the strict as juvenile since. And think in the country and for background checks right now, IT takes longer than the state would like for information to gin into the system. So they just want stricter reporting requirements. That way, someone who isn't supposed to have a going can go out and buy one before their name is enter into the system.
I remember last spring, there were a lot of demonstrations inside the capital. Lot of Young people are especially were demanding gun reform. What do you hearing about what they might be planning now?
Yeah, there are several ralles already scheduled. I know some are taking place this morning ahead of the start of the afternoon session. One is LED by represented Justin jake pearson, who was a member of the sydney y three. Those are the three democratic lawmakers who let a gun control process and on the house floor, pearson in represent of Justin Jones, who went back their seats after they were just except over that process, are definitely expected to be there. Now i'm not sure how large these demonstrations will be um less march after the government schools shooting, there were thousands of people outside and inside the capital is signs that that will be that large but you really never know in the parents of the school children, dren who were killed said that they will be present. And since the shooting, they've held several press conference calling for the reform and they've had several meanings with lawmakers as well.
Plays gaining in national.
