Lawmakers in texas say their federal government is fAiling to enforce immigration law, so they've written a new immigration law of their own.
A greg abbott a signed a bill making IT a state crime across the texas mexico border illegally will hear what I could mean for migrants.
I am a hal Martin that's a Martina. And this is up first from npr music. This is as assembling a task force to try to stop attacks on commercial ships in the red sea. Missiles fired by woozy rebels and gen have begun to disrupt global trade. President bidness, under pressure from republicans to do something .
about IT and in a reversal of vatican, now says catholic priest can offer blessings to same sex couples.
This is a step, and I would say, a significant milestone.
What does that actually change in how our catholic reacting, say, with us, we ve got all the news. You need to start your day.

It's already a federal crime to enter the united states illegally from mexico. Soon it's going to be a state crime in texas under legislation. Texas governor greg abbott sign yesterday .
the measure of state and local police will be allowed to arrest people they believe in the state illegally. Critics of the new law say IT is unconstitional tional, and they worry IT will encourage .
racial profiling. I allowed from the texas news room is here to tell us about what this all mean. So who leon, what penalties are baked into this lation?
So senate bill four IT makes IT a classroom missed the minor for people who cross the organic um and that punish all up to six months in jail. Uh, that's the first offense. Any subsequent offence is a second degree felony. And that jumped up to two to twenty years in prison. And this law scheduled to take effect and early march.
okay. So what's the argument for also making illegal crossings a state crime?
So the biggest take away is governor evident. Supporters say the texas needs to do this because the federal, the by administration, isn't enforcing the law on the books. You watching the governor press conference when he did the bill signing, it's clear that the new law will, in powers, stay in local long force in near the border to cracked down on unauthorized crossings, according to him.
But the way it's written is a statewide bill. So this really applies across texas. And advocates worry this is gonna ode people, civil rights and specifically target mix status families.
That's for at least one members and documented in the rest of the family are U. S. citizens.
Now, the push back could I keep hearing, is that this law infringes on the federal government power to regulate immigration? Is this design maybe triggered a lawsuit that would wind up in the supreme court?
right? correct. So governor abbot says president finance administration isn't doing enough to enforce existing immigration laws and that texas has the sovereign right to do this but he gets to the heart of a twenty twelve supreme court ruling over an area own immigration law in which the court said local police didn't have the authority to arrest people soly based on their immigration status. Legal experts I talk to, they say issues like abortion, gun control, these are domestic issues, but immigration is a federal issue because IT involves co Operations without the countries.
So how does all of this fit into texas republicans, other efforts to try to take control of immigration powers?
sure. IT just adds to the list of what the state is done of the last few years, including Operation loan star, which is a state based initiative that sent thousands of enforcement to the border. You have the governor also order in concertinas wire to be strong up on the northern banks of video organ.
He's deployed the national guard down to the border and know he's also installed a floating barrier over a threats of the the old granda and that's tied up in the appeal court right now after um he was sued to remove this barrier. He's also buy thousands folks to the so called sAnitary cities that are LED by democrats. So this is just one more thing that the governor is doing to sort of a chAllenge of federal governments authority.
So the end, what happens then if federal officials and state officials both want to make a rest to prosecute the same person who gets priority?
sure. That's one of the ambiguity about the people for the state. And federal officials worked together under Operation on star already. But because this .
is a new world, we're onna have to wait, see how that is out.
Reporter the text, new room. thank.
The U. S. Department of defense is sending enabled task force to the red sea to try to prevent attacks on cargo and tanker ships.
Who thy rebels who control part of yemen and get weapons and training from iran have launched missile and drone attacks on commercial ships passing through the red sea in recent weeks.
More am joined by paul mclean, who covers national security for political paul fire. Hooky rebels are waging these .
attack right now. It's, I mean, this time from the homes attack on israel on on october seventeen, the israeli response, the hutu rebels have been sponsored a economically military by iran. So the basically like other militant groups in syria and in iraq in recent weeks that have attacked you as basis there um the kind of taking the margin words from tehran here.
So they said they're going attacking all commercial shipping coming in out of israel. But what they're really doing, attacking any commercial shipping in the red sea has been about twelve attacks over the past month or so a commercial shipping. And these are not ships that have been related to to israel really in any way, is really disrupted commercial shipping in the entire region.
So the U. S. Is responses, this task force, Operation prosperity guardy. And what's that supposed to do?
Yeah, it's a ten nation task force that kind of is falling underneath and existing task force that that's already in in the red sea region LED by the united states based in bahrain, that has a counter piracy mission that has thirty nine nations. They need to contribute chips or or naval officers to to the mission, this task force that the newest one, the Operation prosperity guardian, is ten countries, uh, U.
K, bahrain, canada, france, ideally netherlands, norway, spain in the sahlmann. Now all of those countries are going to contribute ships. The us.
Has several ships in the red. C, U, K. Has one. France has won the canadian, canadian and north region officials told me late monday that they are sending naval officers to the headquarters there, but that doesn't look like we'll be providing ships.
Spoke to someone yesterday who mention how some of things that are being shipped in these quarters or are things that people use every single day. So a disruption could be pretty, pretty major on how are the attacks affecting .
trade already. Bp, the oil giant tits, said that they're going to do contel their shipping in the region. Marsk has done the same.
The norwegian ship builder union and a german formers. I've also either said that they will try to go around the red sea or curtail shipping. So we haven't seen the effects yet, but it'll be pretty quickly. I think that over the next week or toward or several weeks. So I really started seeing some, some disruptions and supply chains and things like that moving from .
the medicine into the indian ocean. Quick, go notice that the U. S, okay, addressing all this with a multination task force instead of, say, maybe attacking, uh, who thy controlled sight in yemen is the idea there maybe to to prevent this from becoming a larger, bigger conflict?
Yes, the different states have those to attack inside the economy. There's been peace talks to in study and the hoods in women that that we don't want to see disrupted, but we just move the ice and Howard aircraft Carrier off the cost of them. And so attacks may be forthcoming.
I mean, the U. S. Is a definitely position to act.
Military palmer glory covers national security for political power. Thank you. Thank you. right? The vatican, an, with approval from pope Frances, has issued a declaration allowing catholic priest to bless same sex couples.
The new ruling Marks a change in the church's position on same sex relationships, but the declaration makes clear that a blessing does not mean approval of same same marriage, and IT doesn't permit prieto official at them.
So what doesn't mean for answers? I'm joined by dinner. Ritchie hoo covers religion for M.
P. R. IT was just two and half years ago.
The catholic church said IT could not bless same sex unions because, quote, god does not bless sin. Do you know what changed? Well.
there have been rumbles of a statement and coming down that would reverse that ruling. You mentioned in october, the vatican published a letter that pope reno wrote earlier this year, saying blessings could be studied if they were distinct from the sacrament of marriage. And bishop conferences, primarily in europe, have been working on these sorts of blessings.
Now, pretty limited declaration, how much does IT actually change?
The new document is very clear to say this is not recognizing or even blessing same sex marriages is a blessing for the couple, not the union. It's not a literal ical ceremony. IT can't be part of a church service, but IT is a blessing. And the document itself says a blessing requires that what is blessed to be confirmed took god's wp. And that blessing the same sex couple should not be a subject, should not be subject to an exhaustive moral analysis.
OK got a lot of family members were catholics, and we had a lot of conversations about this. So what's the reaction been from catholic, or why?
I don't know about your family, but it's been very mixed. There are those who say it's not that big a deal. The united states conference of catholic bishops put out a statement saying the churches teaching on marriage has not changed and this declaration of firms that but I also talked to marian dud berk, who head dignity USA, which is a cathode L G B T Q rights organza and SHE says, even though it's not a full recognition of marriage, he says he does recognize a secretary in relationships between people of .
the same gender. This is a step, and I would say a significant milestone. And what we all know is a long journey to fall equality, fall inclusion, full access to all of the churches segments.
So what's the push back to the change?
Well, I talked with father gerold murray, the pastor of church of the holy family in new york city.
That's a disaster because the church is changing the way that approach is model sin. Another words, the church teaches that the law of god has been laid down by Christ. And that does not include the approval of homosexual activity.
So then, is this creating, or at least highlighting, may be a divide within the church?
Well, father murray at church of the holy family would say yes.
because the pope is supposed to lead us in the fate, not change the fate.
They should note, this document does not require priest to do any sort of blessing IT just offer as the option. But there are people like marian duty berk of USA who says, the church has been divided for a while, and this is the right .
path to take. I have seen many, many people leave the cathode church because of the exclusion ary practices and teachings. I look at every one of those departures as an amputation in the body of Christ.
And what maybe extraordinary is just how quickly this change happened. I mean, this overturns a very direct statement of just two and a half years ago, which apparently in vatican time is the blink of an eye.
The bridge of contributes to nps coverage of religion. Do not thank you very much for reporting on this.
You're welcome.
