Extraordinary scenes from russia this morning.
the head of the vagina group accused the defense minister of attacking his troops and said he intended to replace the russian military's top .
leadership in a speech, pun, denounce the actions and vote to hold its organizers to account. M, P, R, Charles s. Mains in moscow is following all of this and is on the line high.
Charles morning.
so just bring us up to speed. What is behind this fuel between the head of the ordinary group and the defense ministry yeah you know.
for months a hughie precaution, uh, has publicly criticized russia's defense ministry over perceived failure amid the war ukraine, all while promoting the successes of his own, a mercenary group, the ordinary group on the battlefield. Now to observers, the back in fourth snipping seeing part of a larger fight for favor in the remnant and the financial and political capital that would come if IT IT precaution appeared to .
cross the red line in a video posted to his telegram .
account friday. Let's listen the of helping the threat from ukraine last year and doing president later a putin in the country into a flawed invasion. Other words, he's calling into question the rationale. The war itself projection also insisted that deception continues, and he is to the defense minister, sergey shoyu, in personal invoker terms and in a video post a few hours later, precaution went on to accuse soya u and his generals of ordering a strike that killed a large number of ordinary fighters. Although that claim hasn't been independently verified, uh, precaution on the less is calling on his forces to remove the defense minister in the response.
So as you note, this seems to be part of a battle for potts favor. What has the russian president said about all this?
Yeah, you know, for months the debate here has been, you know, is put in intentionally letting this rivalry fester, or is he simply unable to stop IT? Many lean towards the former, if only because IT seemed to be producing Better results on the battlefield. You'll remember that bogner, with some help from russian troops, took the eastern new ukrainian city of book mood after months of fighting that was earlier this summer. Yet in a televised address to the nation this morning, put made IT clear that this time .
progression had finally gone too far. So here.
boutin says those who had organized the military uprising and taking up arbs against russian soldiers had betrayed the country and would pay the Price. Meanwhile, authorities have launched an anti terrorist Operation to restore order and rushes fsb. The federal security services have formally charged precaution with citing an armed revolt that Carries a possible twelve to twenty years in prison if convicted.
So where does this all go from here? I mean, this is all happening against the backdrop of a ukrainian counteroffensive.
Yeah, this is really the other point. In put in speech, he drew parallels with other times in russian history when internal fighting had thrown the country into deep political turmoil, and putin said that at a moment when russia is fighting in ukraine against what he calls the collective west, in other words, against nato, that this was not the time, and yet here we are, in what looks like a full blood crisis, despite putin attempts to stamp out this rebellion of precaution and its vogler mercenary control, several military installations in the southern city of the stove on dawn.
That's a key military hub for the war effort in ukraine. Russia's defense ministries, as organ forces are marching on moscow. Precaution says neither he nor his fighters are about to surrender on the orders of the president, the fsb, or anybody else.
M. P. R, Charles manes and moscow. Thank you so much.
Thank you.
Proceedings to revoke the california a law license of trump attorney john east men began this week.
and they're in the former president's frauen claims about the twenty twenty election under scrutiny as well.
In pr, tom drives bock has been covering this shall oh we? Good morning.
Hey, good morning.
So there were a lot of lawyers working with trump to chAllenge for twenty twenty election. Can you remind us what east man's role was in all of that?
yeah. So if people remember the pro trump rally on january six, just before the capital right east man, was this guy on stage with a kind of inDiana Jones type, had ongles rudy Juliane firing up the crowd and ethra. He made this just baseless claim that the voting machines had a, quote, secret folder of votes that was used to steal the election from trump.
Eastman was also, behind the scenes, the architect of this plan for vice president pants to stop the count of electro al college votes and block bindings Victory. So he was for filing lawsuits that includes some of these claims are fraud and voting a regularities. And also at the same time, he was advancing this legal theory that pants could overturn the election and where he, on sending alternate protrudes lays of electors to the electoral college. After the election on january six, eman wrote an email to rudy Juliane asking trump to add him to the list of pardons he heard was going around, but ultimately he did not receive that party.
So how is the state bar making the case that east men should lose his license? For one thing, the state bar .
argues that eman was either knowingly making false claims of election for, or he was willfully blind to the effect that the information he was providing was false. And that just goes against professional responsibility, ie. s.
For lawyers, they argue. We also heard testimony this week from greg jack up. He was a council device president pants behind the scenes, he was pushing back on ea's plan, and Jacobs stifled.
The east men admitted to him that if they actually tried easter's plan for pens to stop the electoral college count, that the supreme court would probably overrule them nine to nothing. So in other words, the state bar is trying to show east man knew this plan was on constitutional, and he tried IT anyway, jack up testified. He thought easter's plane probably help contribute to the riot too.
So the state bar is still making its case. Do we have any sense of what easter's defense will be? right?
So we have the state are calling several election officials who testifying the election was safe and secure and there was no widespread east man's list of witnesses. Includes some pretty well known election deniers, you know, suggesting he wants to put the election itself on trial in some way. You know, he wants to show that he had a good faith reason to believe there was election front ten and twenty twenty. For example, eastern wants to call mark fitch um this a far right arizona politician, member of the old keepers, prominent election night. He wants to call A C, P, A, not in election expert, uh, who wrote the e book about the twenty twenty election and this guy, Douglas Frank, who's a former high school teacher who now travels around the country doing presentations on why he thinks the election was stolen.
No micon deal the my pillow ga no .
mic deal but duck Frank is is quite close to Michelle.
Yeah okay. So I mean, so this is really kind of the greatest hits of the election and now movement. Any sense of whether that will work? I mean, in the past, judges really haven't had much patients for these sorts of theories. They have not succeeded.
Yes, I talked to legal expert who said he does an appeal battle here. The scheme were alternate or fake program. Pel electors were sent to the electoral college that's already now under federal criminal investigation.
The FBI seized eavens phone last year, and the fraud claims have also been debunked again and again. One of the claims east been relied on came from a guy with a criminal record and aside gig as an amateur ghost hunter. Uh, east man testified a in court this week that he was not aware of the ghost hunting. In any case, i'm eager to see what happens next to we're gonna expect to see eastman present his defense case and then his witnesses face questioning. Under growth.
I get the sense that these proceedings are being pretty widely watched, which seems rare for what is essentially an administrative issue in a single state. Why is that? Do you think? You know.
for the last two and a half years since the right, we've seen a lot of legal consequences for people actually breached the U. S. Capital and entered the building and committed violence. We have not seen really legal consequences in a large part for the politicians and lawyers who let the so called to stop the steal movement. So I think there's a lot of interest in whether the system will impose some legal consequences on a person like john east man or as genest men would like IT, you know, if the judge will fine that he was simply fulfilling his duty as a service advocate for his client Donald .
trump in tom drive box. Thank you. thanks.
The supreme court on friday upheld the bite administration strategy for immigration enforcement.
The strategy put less emphasis on detaining immigrants who are already in the us. Without authorization.
M, P, R, joe rose covers immigration and he joins us now. Hi, joe. Hey, miles. So tell us a little bit more about this case. What was the stake?
Yeah, this is a closely watch case because what at stake is, is really how much authority to buy administration or any administration has to set immigration policy. It's widely agreed that there are not enough resources for immigration and customs enforcement to simply arrest everyone who is in the country without authorization.
So the bind administration said we want to use our prosecutorial discretion to set priorities to focus on suspected terrorists and threats to public safety and on recent border crosses and crucially, under this guidance, simply being present in the U. S. Without authorization is generally not a reason to detain someone. These priorities were quickly chAllenged in court by the states of texas in the visit a, and they argued that the guidelines go far beyond the priorities of past administrations and are basically preventing immigration authorities from doing their jobs. The lower court agreed and block this guidance last year.
Okay, so what are the supreme court decide?
The court ruled the texas. And who is the end of lack the standing to chAllenge these guidelines in the first place, because the states had not shown a direct injury from these enforcement priorities, at least not one that could be redressed by the courts. The vote was eight to one. Justice spread heavin out, wrote the majority opinion, joined chief justice and Roberts and the courts liberals. There were several concurrent opinions from the other conservatives that reach roughly the same conclusion, but by slightly different legal rationales, only justice Samuel, a leader, dissembled finding the texas and luzano should have been able to sue in this case.
This feels like a pretty big win for the by administration.
Is that right? It's definitely a win in the short run because the bind administration can officially begin enforcing these priorities again in the long run. I think it's harder to say in the majority opinion, justice cabinet write several times about how narrow this decision is that the court decided the standing questions on the facts they were before in this case, but that there might be another case where the states would have standing to you. So some legal analysts are saying, do not read too much into this ruling, including Stephen yet layer, who teaches law at cornell university.
The courtrooms decision was pretty narrow from a larger legal perspective. IT doesn't really resolve the issue of one states can and cannot sue to chAllenge federal policies, whether their immigration or otherwise. And so the battle will continue on those fronts.
More on the bite. Administration has been sued a number of times by texas and other states over its immigration policies. What does this ruling mean for in those other instances?
That's really a big question. I me we're talking about cases with a lot at stake. There's a case about the future, for example, of deferred action for childhood arrivals, or docker, you know, that is likely heading for the supreme court.
Dh, by the way, protects immigrants were brought to the us. As children. So this decision on standing could be a big deal.
Certainly, it's going to give the by administration and immigrant advocates fresh ammunition to argue that states that are chAllenging these policies should not get standing in those cases either. What we really don't know is how well that argument is going to work, right? I mean, how much weight lower court judges will decide to give this supreme court ruling?
I think the bottom is that there is going to be more litigation. You know, this is the second time in two years that the supreme court has cited with the bad administration against states in these big immigration cases, but that ruling last year did not stop states from chAllenging immigration policies in court. I don't think this one is likely to do that either.
That's here is joe rose. Thank you so much for .
