What would you do if mysterious drones appeared over your hometown? I started asking questions. What do you remember happening on that night of December 16th? It actually rotated around our house, looking as if it was peering in each window of our home. I'm Gabe Lenners. From Imagine, iHeart Podcasts, and Lenners Entertainment, listen to Obscura, Invasion of the Drones, wherever you get your favorite podcasts.

When I smoke weed, I get lost in the music. I like to isolate each instrument. The rhythmic bass, the harmonies on the piano, the sticky melody. Hey, careful, babe. There's someone crossing the street. Sorry, I didn't see him there. If you feel different, you drive different. Don't drive high. It's dangerous and illegal everywhere. A message from NHTSA and the Ad Council.

I'm Mark Seale. And I'm Nathan King. This is Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli. The five families did not want us to shoot that picture. This podcast is based on my co-host Mark Seale's bestselling book of the same title that features new and archival interviews with Francis Ford Coppola, Robert Evans, James Caan, Talia Shire, and many others. Yes, that was a real horse's head. Listen and subscribe to Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli.

Having a great day. Sunshine all the time. I'm here in LA. It's nice, right? And you know, don't be like, well, let's talk about sunshine. The rest of us are freezing. I lived in Toronto. Okay. For many, many years. I lived in Canada for a billion years. Edmonton. Hello. You can't get colder than Edmonton. It's like minus 78 in March. So I've earned this. Okay. I don't want to hear any of this. Like she has no idea. Or I love seasons.

I love seasons too, but it is very nice to be sitting here in February with some sunshine after all of my cold Canadian springs. Love you, Canada. This is no reflection. I can enjoy the warm weather and miss Canada. Two things can be true.

All right, you guys know how these loft meetings work. You send in all of these wonderful questions and thoughts and ideas and experiences you've had around the show. I read them, I delight in them, and then I do my best to answer everything.

Hi, Hannah. I'm deep in my 300th kidding kind of watch of New Girl. And it occurs to me this show never mentions Jess can sing. She does sing on the show, but like her vocals are never celebrated. No one is surprised by her talent.

I was wondering if that was a show decision, like is it a wink to the audience who knows Zoe's abilities? Or was this a Zoe decision to focus on acting and not singing on the show? Thanks for making an incredible podcast. It's been fun to relive this series with your commentary and behind-the-scenes stories, Rachel M. You know, it's so funny. You know, we just did the recap for X's and...

I think Zoe says something in it that just made me laugh where she says something like, "I have a natural instinct for comedy." I fell out so much because I was like, "Y'all cheeky writers doing a little inside joke for yourself." She says that as Jess, but obviously, Zoe has a natural talent for comedy. I think it's the same with the singing. I remember reading the pilot, right? Where she goes like, she sings to herself, "Oh, what?" Remember that from the pilot?

And I was like, they have to make some reference to singing. Like, especially when this show came out, like Zoe was front and center with her band. Everybody knew what an incredibly talented singer she was. And she was on tour and she was doing like wonderful. So I think they were really smart to make Jess, not Zoe,

You know, just be like a replica of Zoe. They created a distinct character in Jess, but you've got this talent in this actress. She can sing and everybody wants to hear her sing. Right. And so I think that they found a natural way, which is to make it like her little like anxiety quirk.

right that she does she kind of sings herself if she's feeling nervous you know and she doesn't have to you know be like a belter or sing a big song and everybody be like wow what a voice you know because it's like a nervous tech that she kind of does and I thought it was so smart of the show and I remember that in the pilot and I remember being excited being like oh my gosh I'm gonna get to hear Zoe Deschanel sing on set you know and you know and she did it in this perfect way that fit the character but also I think like satisfied the the fans and

who wanted to hear Zoe sing. So it was super smart, really delicate, really nuanced how they kind of wove that in character-wise. So I think that's the, I mean, that's how I felt about it. I think that was probably their thinking of like, how do we use this natural talent and what everyone's going to be like hoping happens and not just make it non-existent, but she can't be like some phenomenal singer like Zoe is.

How do we make it work? And I think they did it perfectly. No surprise. New Girl. All right. Next question from Monica G. Hannah and Lamorne. I am loving this podcast. Cece and Winston have been my favorite part of New Girl from the beginning. Oh, or I guess like the second episode. Would you guys ever considering doing a spinoff series like Winston's a cop, Cece runs a modeling agency, and sometimes they sell crimes together using the models as undercover agents. Is this a pitch? I like this pitch.

LOL, it's a stretch, but I love the two of you back on my screen. Well, Monica, I think this is going to have to do. Watching Lamorne and I do a podcast together, I think we solve kind of like small new girl crimes, tiny mysteries, you know, like the bear. You know, we investigate like cops and we look cute like models. I don't think...

We would do a spinoff series together. But I do feel like Lamorne and I, with our friendship that goes back one billion years now, we basically never not work together. We've always found a way to work together. And the reason why that is

so intentional is we'll always be friends forever till we're, you know, 200 years old. But, you know, life is busy, right? Life is busy. And the way these jobs, these acting jobs work is they're

really long hours and they take you different places. And so then when you're trying to see your friends, when you work in this industry, it often is quite difficult because you're, you know, working crazy hours and you're far away from each other and you get moved around. And so you see each other not so often, but if you can find a way to work,

work together, then you get to hang out with your friend all the time. And that really was the, like one of the reasons we really wanted to do this podcast because we're like, we miss each other. But if we could figure out how to hang out every week, then we get to see each other. Um, you know, Lauren and I are used to sharing a trailer for a decade. We're used to seeing each other every day and, you

and being really honest with each other and very transparent about things. And so we had to figure out a way. And this podcast was that. We get to hang out every week. We get to tell the truth. We get to make each other laugh. We get to connect with fans, which is a passion for both of us. So yeah, I feel like this is the spinoff, girl. You're here. We're doing it.

Celia D sent in a letter. It says, Hey, Hannah, my sister and I were talking about Schmidt the other day, as you do.

She insisted that Schmidt had to go back to Elizabeth for two reasons. First, he had to resolve his own issues around his internalized fat phobia and fear of not being good enough. And second, so he could be a better man for Cece. I think if a guy cheats once, he's bound to do it again, but I still kind of root for Cece and Schmidt. So confusing. What do you think? Did Elizabeth make Schmidt a better man for Cece or did he just hurt two wonderful women by acting like a child? I will say this.

Look, for the show, for the story, wonderful, of course. Makes perfect sense. Elizabeth gave him some growth. He needed the growth. Elizabeth is wonderful and smart and honest and strong and cool and gorgeous and sexy and all the things. In real life, as a human, not in a fictional show where you have to build drama and story points. No. No.

I am not here for anybody to learn on anybody by hurting them. So I think he just hurt two wonderful women by acting like a child. I'm not here for it. Not going to support it. I don't think that it's like something that we should, I, you know, I watch Love Island. Everybody who knows me knows that I've watched Love Island. I love it so much. That show, anybody who's been on Love Island, I am a fan. Um, the thing that makes me the craziest is the, um, we need a test.

We need a date. Say, I'm not 100% sure on this relationship I've got going on. I think I still need to explore dating other people. That's being a mature human and saying what you really mean. But to say, I need to go and make out, sleep with, get emotionally invested, whatever it is, with someone else so I can see if this is real is some mojo. Okay? Okay.

So, um, I love that by the way, you guys are like dissecting and analyzing Schmidt. I do love that. I love that this show is not just like, Oh, what a laugh is also like, let's look at relationships. Let's look at this man's growth. Was he justified? Did this make sense? What was this really about? I love that. That's what this whole podcast is about. Like what?

Let's dig into these characters. Next, we have Anya. Anya. Lamorne and Hannah, I have a question. Are Coach and Cece remembering a different makeout than the rest of us in the series?

the sisters episode because as you've said it it wasn't that good lol was that scene written because you guys had such an awkward time and does the fact that cece and coach become friends prove you can be friends with your ex does one date count as an ex i'm gonna count it anyway thanks for the pod it's been a constant comfort on my long drives to work what's on you so funny you say that because i have thought a lot about it and i think that that was written

Because that was the truth of what happened between Damon and I.

Damon and I don't have chemistry like that. We have best friend chemistry. We're super close friends till, you know, now, today. We don't have chemistry like that. And so it was so awkward to shoot. It was a total disaster. We were laughing too hard. He really did hurt my tooth. And so just in new girl fashion, they write things into the show. I had forgotten that we then had to recreate as characters the things that had happened in real life.

So funny. I don't think that this proves that you can be friends with an ex because I don't think that Cece and Coach are exes.

Right? They're not. They're just like two people that kind of like walked along and then like bumped each other's faces and then like kept moving. So no, I do think that coach though, it seems like had some real feelings. Like he was in to it, but she was never into it and they never dated and they never had that kind of connection. So I think they were always friends, absolutely always friends. And then tried something that ended in like literal injury and

that was that so I think they just kind of realized exactly what they were I'm glad that you're listening to this on long drives to work it's funny to from where I live to where I would shoot at Fox I did New Girl there I also did a show called Not Dead Yet on the same lot and sometimes on the same New Girl stages so that was a trip but I would have long drives to work and I would put on my favorite podcasts too and so it's so nice to know that that you know we're doing that for other people to keep them company on their drives that's cool

Have you ever looked into the night sky and wondered who or what was flying around up there? We've seen planes, helicopters, hot air balloons, and birds. But what if there's something else? Something much more ominous that appears under the cover of night? Silent. Unseen. Watching.

They may be right above your car late one night as you cruise down the road, or look like mysterious lights hovering above your home. Drones. Or are they? We used the word drone because it was comfortable to other people. One minute it was there and one minute it wasn't. Oh, that is beyond amazing.

Creepy. Do you feel like this drone was targeting you specifically? Yes, absolutely. Listen to Obscurum, Invasion of the Drones, on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Mark Seale. And I'm Nathan King. This is Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli.

The five families did not want us to shoot that picture. Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli is based on my co-host Mark's best-selling book of the same title. And on this show, we call upon his years of research to help unpack the story behind The Godfather's birth from start to finish. This is really the first interview I've done in bed. We sift through innumerable accounts. 35 pages isn't very much. Many of them conflicting. That's nonsense. There were 60 pages. And try to get to the truth of what really happened.

And they said, we're finished. This is over. The cannoli's not going to work. You've got to get rid of those guys. It's a disaster. Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli features new and archival interviews with Francis Ford Coppola, Robert Evans, James Caan, Talia Shire, and many others. Yes, that was a real horse's head. She says, hey, I'm sorry to write about something that annoys me. Oh, don't apologize for that. It's my favorite thing. I want to know. I want to know what annoys you. That's like the best. We're not just here for the compliments. Love this already. But it's bothered me for years and I need to let it out. Let's go, Ellie. Why does new girl introduce siblings once and then never again? When

Winston's sister is in one episode and you never hear from her again. Then we get two episodes with just his sister and then she's tossed out like yesterday's garbage. My three siblings, though we live all over, are a really important influence in my life and it just seems so strange to never get a call or even a mention on the holidays. I realize it's not your department, but what's going on with that? Thanks, Ellie.

Here's my thought on it because I thought about it too when I rewatched the sisters stuff. I was like, I feel like the core of New Girl, and I appreciate this so much, is that it's about that stage, age, era of your life where... Sorry, my allergies are making me crazy. I was talking about this last week. Allergies in LA. I feel like...

This whole show was created about this time in your life where your friends are your chosen family. You know, like you see that brotherhood between the boys. You see the sisterhood between Cece and Jess. And you see that kind of family dynamic with all of them. And I think that that was just always like the core of the storytelling, the core of the heart of this, like the show was about

was how they relied on each other as chosen family. They weren't living with their brother and sister anymore where that's who you called. You called this, you know, this chosen brother, this chosen sister. But you're also still in that age where you're like, you miss your mom and dad. Yeah.

Like you become like a little kid a bit, which is why I think you do see some of like the parental stuff. Not a ton, but like a bit more than we ever like hear of all the siblings again and again. I like that they're referenced. I like that you kind of get a little more backstory on these characters, like who their siblings were. And then you can kind of get a little information of probably what their childhood was like. But they didn't want it to be the focus.

I feel like this is just about chosen family that that moment in your life where you've moved out of your parents home Away from your siblings, but you're not married. You don't have kids yet And you've got roommates and they become the people you rely on and I think that was always just what the story was always about That's what new girl is. And so they always had to stay true to that. That's my theory Just a theory, but that's my theory on that
