Doug's Fitbit data showed only 12 steps in a three-hour window when Nicole VanderHeyden was believed to have been murdered. This evidence proved he was not physically active during the time of the crime, supporting his alibi. The device was worn correctly, as it registered minimal movement, likely from routine activities like checking on their child or using the bathroom.
George Birch's DNA was found on Nicole's body and the cord used to strangle her. Phone data placed him at all locations associated with the murder, including her house and the field where her body was dumped. Additionally, he was seen Googling the case 64 times, and his car was linked to the hit-and-run incident that occurred shortly after the murder.
Doug was initially suspected due to his volatile relationship with Nicole, her text messages accusing him of abuse, and the suspicious timing of his 911 call reporting her missing. Investigators also found blood-like stains in his garage and a shoe with a zigzag pattern that matched injuries on Nicole's body. However, these findings were later disproven by forensic evidence.
Nicole VanderHeyden died from strangulation and blunt force trauma. The autopsy revealed she sustained 241 injuries, including signs of sexual assault. The severity of the injuries was so extreme that dental records were required for identification.
George Birch had a prior arrest for murder in 1998, though he was acquitted. This history, combined with his DNA at the crime scene, phone data placing him at key locations, and his suspicious behavior after the murder, painted a compelling picture of guilt for the jury.
Nicole's car was initially suspected as the vehicle used to transport her body, but Progressive Snapshot data proved it never left the garage that night. This evidence helped clear Doug Dietry and shifted focus to George Birch, whose vehicle was linked to the crime scene.
In May 2016, 31 year-old Nicole VanderHeyden, a mom of three, was found dead in a field. Initially, her boyfriend was suspected as they had been in a fight, but his FitBit data showed that he was elsewhere during the murder. That's when they realized someone else's DNA was on Nicole's body.
