In 1932, Charlie Pollard, a 26-year-old farmer in Macon County, Alabama, joined a government-sponsored medical program that promised free medical care, meals, and even a death benefit. However, this program turned out to be a horrific experiment studying the untreated effects of syphilis on African American men. Despite the discovery of penicillin, a cure for syphilis, the men were denied treatment, leading to immense suffering and death for many participants.
