The marriage of the Lamb (Christ) and his bride (the Church) symbolizes the ultimate union between Jesus and his followers. The bride is clothed in fine white linen, representing purity and righteousness. Those invited to the marriage supper are blessed because they are the bride, signifying their eternal relationship with Christ.
The angel refuses worship from John because angels are servants of God and not worthy of worship. This emphasizes that worship should be directed solely to God, not to any created beings, including angels.
The sword coming out of Jesus' mouth represents the word of God, which is his weapon for bringing justice and victory over his enemies. This imagery echoes Ephesians 6:17, where the word of God is described as the sword of the Spirit.
The millennium refers to a 1,000-year period described in Revelation 20, often interpreted as a time of Christ's reign. Views differ on whether this is a literal or symbolic number and whether it is past, present, or future. These interpretations also influence perspectives on Satan's binding and the resurrections described in the text.
Those whose names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life are pardoned from judgment because their sins are covered by Christ. This ensures their eternal salvation, as opposed to those whose names are not in the book, who face eternal torment in the lake of fire.
The New Jerusalem is the future dwelling place of God and his people, described as a gold cube roughly 1,400 cubic miles in size, adorned with precious jewels. It symbolizes perfection and restoration, with no temple because God himself is the temple. The gates are never shut, and it is always illuminated by God's presence.
The river of life flows from God's throne, and the tree of life grows on both sides of the river, bearing fruit each month. This imagery represents eternal life and restoration, reversing the curse from Genesis. Unlike in Eden, the tree is no longer forbidden, and there are no curses attached to it.
Jesus emphasizes his imminent return to remind believers of the certainty of his coming, the reality of judgment, and the eternal blessings awaiting those who follow him. This urgency encourages believers to spread the message and remain faithful.
