Authorities found two rocks with hair and blood on them, a .22 caliber cartridge case near her body, and a long trail of blood leading from her final resting place about 130 feet up the trailhead. A metal ratchet wrench was also discovered nearby.
Ed Gumm was a convicted felon who had been released from prison in 1986 after serving time for attempted sexual assault. He had access to a .22 Marlin Brand rifle, the same type of firearm used in Kathy's murder. Additionally, he frequented the Thumb Butte area and had confessed to other sexual assaults in the same vicinity.
DNA evidence from a semen stain on the victim's sweatpants was matched to Bryan Scott Bennett through genetic genealogical analysis. His daughter provided a DNA sample, which confirmed he was the likely perpetrator.
Bryan Scott Bennett's DNA was found on the ratchet wrench discovered at the crime scene. Additionally, he was known to carry a .22 caliber firearm, the same type used in Kathy's murder. He also died by suicide with a .22 caliber gun in 1994.
Genetic genealogy was used to compare the unknown male DNA from the 1990 sexual assault to profiles in Arizona's convicted offender database. This led to the identification of Bryan Scott Bennett as the likely perpetrator, and further DNA testing confirmed his involvement in both the 1990 assault and Kathy's murder.
The case fell apart due to a lack of evidence and discrepancies in statements. Despite Renee positively identifying Bennett as her assailant, charges were never filed.
The sheriff's office categorized Bryan Scott Bennett as a serial predator who likely committed more crimes than the four cases they had linked him to. They emphasized that he operated undetected for years and targeted victims in areas he was familiar with.
Sal Sposito expressed relief and comfort in finally knowing who killed his sister. He had thought he would never get an answer, and the resolution brought closure to the decades-long mystery.
When a beautiful co-ed is brutally murdered on a popular hiking trail in Prescott National Forest in the summer of 1987, authorities are stumped on who the killer could be. The investigation drags on for decades until finally advances in DNA technology link a serial predator to multiple cases of sexual assault and murder. This is the second of two episodes covering the murder of Cathy Sposito and the identification of Bryan Scott Bennett.
