Their family members, including Susan Forey, a former New Hampshire State Police commander, noticed they were unusually out of contact. Their phones were left behind in their apartment, and they were not answering calls or texts.
The apartment was eerily quiet and appeared undisturbed. Their phones, wallets, and purses were left inside, the bed was made, and a window was open.
They used location data from Steve's third cell phone, which showed it left the apartment at 2:42 p.m. on April 18th and pinged on the Marsh Loop Trail. The last known location was a heavily wooded area off the trail at 3:47 p.m.
Both were shot multiple times. Steve was shot four times in various parts of his body, and Wendy was shot twice near her head and neck. Their deaths were ruled as homicides.
Nan saw the Reeds walking on the trail around 2:45 p.m. on April 18th. Shortly after, she heard five distinct gunshots at 2:54 p.m., which she described as loud and close. She later encountered a young man on the trail who appeared suspicious.
She described him as a white man in his late 20s or early 30s, about 5'10", slender, with short brown hair and a shaved face. He was wearing khakis, a dark blue jacket, and carrying a black backpack and a brown plastic grocery bag.
Their clothing was bunched up in unnatural places, indicating they were likely dragged. Additionally, a patch of ripped fabric matching Wendy's pants was found between the blood trail and their final location.
Logan Clegg, a 26-year-old unhoused man with a dark past, was identified as a person of interest. He was arrested in Vermont and later charged with the murders.
Logan's appearance matched the composite sketch of the suspicious man Nan had seen. He was also linked to the burned-out campsite and the purchase of items found at the site. His Glock 17 handgun, with Sig Luger 9mm ammunition, was found in his possession.
Logan Clegg was convicted of all charges, including four counts of second-degree murder. He was sentenced to 50 years to life in prison for the murders and additional time for other charges.
When a retired couple vanishes on an afternoon walk behind their apartment in New Hampshire in the spring of 2022, it's all hands on deck to find them. When the horror of what happened to them is revealed, it sends investigators down a rabbit hole of clues which lead to the doorstep of a young man with a dark past.
