Shira Gill defines an intentional life as being radically intentional, not just with physical possessions but also with time and resources. It involves clarifying what is important, cutting out clutter and distractions, and focusing on the few things that truly add value to one's life.
The biggest obstacle is the overwhelming volume of commitments, possessions, and responsibilities. People often accumulate too much without a system to edit or cut back, leading to feelings of drowning in 'too muchness.' Decision-making around what to keep and what to let go is particularly challenging.
Shira emphasizes the importance of having clear values and intentions. When chaos arises, such as unexpected events or disruptions, being anchored in these values allows for quick recalibration. Flexibility and the ability to reset are key to maintaining intentionality despite life's curveballs.
Adjusting volume involves intentionally increasing or decreasing the amount of something in your life, whether it's possessions, commitments, or relationships. It’s about finding the right balance by asking whether you have too much or too little in a particular area and making adjustments to align with your goals.
Decision-making is difficult because people tend to focus on what they are losing rather than what they are gaining. The brain has a negativity bias, making it hard to let go of items or commitments tied to memories, identity, or fear of regret. Shifting the mindset to focus on the benefits of letting go can make the process easier.
Shira suggests creating an inbox for paper clutter, a centralized place for all paperwork that needs attention. She also recommends a 'get it done day' to batch errands and tasks, and automating repetitive tasks like scheduling appointments or sending emails to save time and mental energy.
Starting with tiny actions minimizes resistance from the brain, which is wired to avoid perceived risks. Small, consistent steps make it easier to establish new habits and build confidence. Over time, these micro-habits can grow into larger, sustainable routines.
The life audit process involves ranking each area of life on a scale of one to five based on fulfillment and satisfaction. After ranking, individuals jot down reflections and note small, actionable steps to improve each area. The goal is to identify where to focus energy and attention for the coming season or year.
Shira suggests identifying which relationships to nurture (turning up the volume) and which to reduce energy investment in (turning down the volume). She recommends clarifying relationship deal breakers, systematizing meaningful connections, and implementing small habit shifts to strengthen relationships. The 'parking lot test' helps assess whether interactions leave you feeling energized or drained.
A key takeaway is to ask, 'How might my life be better with less?' This question encourages a shift from accumulating more to focusing on fewer, better things. Reducing volume in possessions, commitments, and relationships can lead to greater clarity, fulfillment, and alignment with personal values.
