After running across Australia, Nedd felt a desire to push his physical and mental limits further. He considered running the length of the UK, but found it too hilly, ultimately choosing the 1,000-mile track challenge. This decision was partly driven by his naivety and stubbornness, as he had only started running a few years prior.
Nedd focused on strength training to prepare his body for the strain of consecutive long runs. While acknowledging the value of expert advice, he emphasized the importance of learning through experience. He admitted to not being fully prepared for the record attempt, but emphasized the relatability of his approach, juggling work and training.
Nedd's initial goal was to run 160 kilometers a day for 10 days, aiming for 10 kilometers per hour. He used a "master lap" strategy, running two laps in each of the eight lanes to break down the mental challenge. He would eat or rest after each master lap. Due to injury and sleep deprivation, he later shifted to an 18-hour running, 6-hour rest schedule.
Despite being a good sleeper, Nedd experienced severe sleep deprivation due to the stress of the event and daylight savings time changes. This lack of sleep impaired his decision-making, leading to a critical point on day five where he experienced heart palpitations, nosebleeds, and near-collapse. This forced him to re-evaluate his focus on the record and prioritize sleep.
Nedd developed tenosynovitis in both shins, requiring him to wear dictus bands for support. He also experienced severe knee pain due to loss of hip mobility, forcing him to alternate walking and running for the final 400 kilometers. Despite these challenges, his blood tests post-run were relatively normal, highlighting the power of his mental fortitude.
Nedd has faced criticism from purists within the ultra-running community due to his perceived lack of experience and unconventional approach. However, he maintains that his focus is on inspiring positive social change and promoting a message of living life to the fullest, rather than adhering to traditional running norms.
Nedd's anger stemmed from the lack of joy he experienced during the run, contrasting with his previous experience running across Australia. He felt he had placed undue pressure on his support crew and hadn't fully embraced the positive aspects of the event, despite the significant funds raised for charity.
Nedd experienced physical exhaustion, shock, and sleep disturbances in the days following the run. He found it difficult to turn off his need to move and exercise, leading to further sleep issues and a sense of unease. However, he embraced this downtime as a necessary part of processing the experience and appreciating its positive outcomes.
Nedd is passionate about addressing homelessness because he believes everyone deserves basic necessities like shelter, food, and access to resources. He aims to raise awareness and support organizations like Mobilize, which facilitate collaboration between existing charities and government agencies to provide effective solutions.
