Celeste had a history of long periods without contact, and her social media posts suggested a busy life with a new baby and college classes, leading friends and family to assume she was simply preoccupied.
Celeste is a 27-year-old Black woman, 5 feet 2 inches tall, 110 pounds, with brown curly hair and brown eyes. She has ear, nose, and tongue piercings, and a prominent dreamcatcher tattoo on her right upper leg.
Information can be reported to Maine State Police via the tip form or to the Auburn Police Department’s anonymous tip line at (207) 333-6653.
Celeste struggled at home and in school, often staying with friends and experimenting with drugs and alcohol. She had several run-ins with the law, including felony charges at 19 and 20.
Stephanie and Celeste had a strained relationship, with periods of no contact. Stephanie witnessed domestic violence by Celeste's boyfriend, leading to further tension and eventual cutting off of communication.
John Benton has a documented criminal history in Maine, including convictions for domestic violence assault and aggravated assault against other people. However, he is not charged with any crimes related to Celeste's disappearance.
Despite posts about her son and college enrollment, friends reported seeing signs of abuse during video calls, and Celeste's sudden cessation of contact after these posts raised suspicions about the authenticity of her online persona.
The case remains under diligent investigation by Detective Mike Chavez and his team, with ongoing efforts to uncover new leads and evidence.
Free, confidential support is available through thehotline.org or by calling 1-800-799-SAFE. The Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence also offers guidance and resources for those affected by domestic abuse.
It wasn’t unusual for Celeste Doghmi to go long stretches of time without talking to her friends and family. She’d lost touch with her mother and many of her close friends, but as far as they could tell by posts on social media, her life was busy with a new baby and starting college classes.
But when Celeste’s mother in Germany received a phone call in the spring of 2023, she learned that Celeste hadn’t simply lost touch – she was missing. She’d been missing for two years.
