Hey, guys, in today's bone's episode, I wanted to spend some time in osla catching up with some people i've grown really close to over the past year. The rest of ryan duke and bow duke came as a shocked to all of us. But how was the town of a silla reacted? I first cut up with duty vsi from the osler star. How did he feel when he heard the news?
I was definitely surprised. I'd never heard of an duke. Orb duke. Obviously I need some family, but I did no him. And of course, I know some iranic family, but not close family, not at the time at least. IT was a shock that was strange too, because by the time I got to the course, which was, you know, about three or four hours after I knew, I think I are multiple stories involving rand do in bodo, including no one I just told you about the somebody come in four in two thousand and five with around dogs name.
Why do you think these stories are coming out now? Why all the sudden when there's these two names? Are these stories just surfacing?
That's one of the most wildering ing things about this case is that, you know, there's that old saying that two can keep a secret of one of them is did that's one of the reasons I thought that there was just one person you know, i'm hold is two people.
What do you want to happen for the community when IT comes to the truth coming out, which may happen if there's a trial? Where do you see things heading? Well.
I do you think there's a little bit of how much too much fear over IT right now? There are things are on which I don't always prove of, because people are investigating people left and right and not sort of things. And IT be one thing if we knew these people in love, but we don't know the context.
So but this has happened with other people. There have been plenty people, regardless of intent or anything else, who have been picked apart by the community. And I said the community, I mean, not just the local community, but also had the online community.
I mean, I know that there is no way to cover something like this without hurt feelings, and it's tough. There are so many moral decisions that have to be made, and I don't think people realize that are out sadder. I mean, i'm sure you realized, I know you do.
A lot of moral choices have to be made writing about this case. And sometimes you make mistakes and sometimes you don't. You regret what you do. There's the names I told you before, not of sources, but names i've told you before, that I I sometimes read them because I just like what I tell him, that name.
I feel i'm sure i've done the same thing somewhere on the line.
People have a lot of feelings about how theyd like this thing to turn out. I think there, and maybe it's the family that wants to, are people close to family that they want? I think they want the truth, but I think they also wanted to be overwhelmed, right? And I can understand that, but I don't think they'll ever really be closer to the case unless it's a trial.
Who decides what is over? I don't .
think anybody does. I think IT will never be over if there's not a trial certainty and never will be of anyway because it's going to become you know, I think they're be multiple books writing about IT. The problem I see with the trial, though, there is a part of me that selfishly are others SE won't there to be a trial for that very reason? I do think that that's the only way they will be closer.
yeah. But I worry that even with the trial, we won't learn the truth. And I feel like it's more likely that if there's a trial, IT will be, as you taught about most recent case even is that IT will be, ryan defend, say, and boat did IT and the prosecutors say ryan did IT and both trying minimize involvement of the other.
So basically, I think there is a very good chance that we have two competing laws rather than the truth. And I don't think the truth is going to come out in australia that but I could kids look through the crack, you know him as a corner here of the truth of the corner layer, until the rest of us can figure out because the evidence will be presented. I know anybody invested in this case in anyway is gone to stop looking for the truth. You might put the truth aside for five months until of us, you were walking through the grocery store and you see a book about the case, you know pick up, start reading.
We're in IT right now. Yeah, we're neck deep in IT. There's no turning back. That's the way I see IT. We can't run from the truth just like anybody else can't.
I don't do a lot of digging because people come to me and with more than I can handle, more than I can right about the list, three weeks for this stuff that i've had told to me already.
Okay, if ryan duke .
played guilty, how would IT affect the town?
I think there be a lot about, a lot of, or I knew he did IT not people, obviously, they didn't know he did that too much to go. But I think people that would be saying, I know, I know you, yeah, I don't see, I don't know. I think they would be the ones who aren't really that deep into the case, who see other people who are red up on the boards and listening to every episode. Those people will be, I think, maybe disappointed, maybe be altered.
People, nature want that to be more to the story of bigger, more elaborate reason for things.
Well, I do tell what happened. Our eyes would go to what happens with modus. That's what would happen.
You know, does he go to trial as he played guilty? Does he get nothing? Does he get to slapped on the rest is get no time and get the maxims?
I don't imagine anything of consequence is gna happen with this case, ran's cases as a judicis. I don't know what will happen, but I think everybody will be very curious. Horse scenario is I got a trial and everybody gets off.
Assume they had thing to do with that. But I think you would be very bad for this community if IT turns out that box still has a pleasant and has immediately from prosecution. I think that there will be a lot of people very upset about that.
Let us say that ryan do does maintain the not guilty blue, and the court system takes forever. How would that affect this community?
Well, I have a friend and who has been in jail for three years here without trial or bond. Now he's been in jail for three years, more than three years. why? How has the military for three years? Yeah, that's a long time, really long.
So why would this case be different? Because IT is different. Because I have the if I had to guess, I would say, come me about a .
year if ryan duke, the quilter a how did he live here in this town that long? And go a notice like that. Well, I sometimes thought .
about how we not really want safety, what we want, the illusion of safety. I mean, I fit the not at the house of a guy whose was convicted a murder before I felt completely safe. Really, really. Yeah, he was a one of my dad's friends. So I believe he kills money in jail.
And G I mean.
IT is multiple inside murder in the area. I mean, so we probably unfortunately come in contact with people who have killed other people more than we know you. You bring that this question about, okay, well, if franz's the killer, how do we feel about living in the same community with him?
I think most people thought that IT was somebody from the community. We ve always fit that way. There are a few people who thought that of some money from another town, but not that far away. I mean, I never heard anybody say I think IT was a stranger in some degree.
It's not that they give a surprise, but when you find out dam the person really was here the whole time, it's just kind of crazy to think about .
IT is one of the things i've thought about. You know, you have this idea of a small team, I mean, word, and one of the smallest schools in the state being to wait room. The smallest counties in the state population was. And you have this idea, these small towns where everybody knows everybody. The thing about a small town is not that you know everybody, is that everybody is one week away, you know, somebody that knows them, you know and .
that's how IT is. But that's not true. And let's say later, oh.
that's why I felt lonely in this place. There's no connection in the people.
If you're fascinated by true crime, diving into a mystery, piecing together clues and figuring out what really happened, I have something pretty cool share with you. It's a game called hunt, a killer. Imagine this.

Are you feeling overwhelming with all the supplements out on the market? There's a lot of misinformation, and that's why guns took the time to understand a proper duced to ensure nutrition is optimized and safe. Are you currently taking multiple supplements a day while Green isn't a multivariate, a Greens gummy I or a probiotic? It's all of those things, and then some at a fraction of the Price and bonus IT tastes great.
There are eight dummies in each daily snack pack because you can't fit the amount of nutrients and guns into just one gumming plus IT makes for A, I personally have been loving an excuse to basically eat coming back in the morning. No artificial colors of labors. IT tastes just like a fruit sack.
Vegan, not free, gluten free and daily free. Generic multi vitamins only contain around seven and nine vitals, whereas with grows, there are twenty plus vitamins and minerals and sixty plus whole food ingredients. And grouse ingredients are backed by over thirty five thousand research publications.
You wanted a supplement you could enjoy. Well, with bruins, this is in a chore. It's something you can look forward to go to Greens that co, to get up to forty five percent off. That's G R U N S that co, and use the code tender foot at check out.
Where do you see things heading as the season on to grant comes to an end, as hopefully justice is served and this trial comes to an end, as things in the court come to an end? Where do you see things going? What happens from here.
I don't know, until ran in both cases are both been adjudicated, one where another. I don't think IT ends. And I think if either or both of those cases have been adjudicated without a going to trial, then I think there's very good chinese that there are still be.
People can't wait around for the information to become public and you know, the case file, I worry that they're gone to use excuse of there may be more convictions. We're going to keep this case open, to keep IT open and keep IT close from us until all that's taking care. O is not going to be over and people are gonna talking about IT and people are going to be wondering about IT.
This can be front page news stories and also little star, and you're going to do updates on the case when there's news to report. And i'm probably going to put stuff about on my blog and it's probably onto be specials. I mean, I said earlier, even with the trial, I think is the only way there will be closer in a lot ways.
That's true. I don't miss anything I will ever fully end IT almost seems like the case really opened up when the rest happened. We heard all these things and and we looked at all these avenues over the years of what could have happened to her and who might have been involved in almost all of that was turned out.
The window when that ran dx arrest was announced because none of IT fit not only hit rpt IT, also hit the gas fatal, because everything became like bigger, obvious, because I was like, there was so much new information. It's a border in case IT is. And I know part of the reason why has gotten so complex is because it's been seven years and because you've been eleven years of speculation and people saying things.
But even one thing if and this is why I one of the reasons I felt the gag order because I think that is probably a large monitor to the gbs story. I got my doubts about different parts, but I think there's there's a kernel of truth to IT, but we got this little bit of story and of a certain the speculation boomed because everybody's like trying to figure out how that story could be true. And of course, you know, when that happens, there's other people saying why I didn't meet you, including me, including you, and said they're speculation about those reasons he couldn't meet to you or why some money might be line just rumor and speculation flooding into field.
The vacuum created by secure acy is just crazy. If the gbr had have gotten up there and told us a full story, it's believable that make sense. Now part of the problem is I don't think they have that tell us. I think they have bits and pieces. They have a kernel of a story that is enough, they think, to prove a murder conviction and and IT may be but there's no guarantee that will ever know the truth.
My next token o seller was the mayor's office.
The last time .
he spoke on the podcast was, coincidently, exactly a week before ryan dux arrest. I ask him to walk me through the day.
found out I got a call just the night before the press comfort from our police chief. Just let me know that an arrest had been made and that there would be a press conference LED by the gba, and then I should be there at the courthouse.
So I do that much before everybody else, but I really have tried to make sure, even though people say out what the the police chief works for you, yes, in some capacity, but the same time I don't want to fear because i'm not law enforcement. I've been very careful. Just to give them is much easier because chief Billy hancock is an amazing guy and very trustworthy.
And so he makes me very easier to let him do his job because he does not so well. But I want to the court house actually walk over with the members they are. So the police department, and I actually was in a side room kind of behind you saw where we came out from behind the the judge's bench, actually, terrorist father and stepmother, they were there, the press converse said they were that side of room.
And I got a chance to speak with them and actually pray with them if they were able, against some closure, which I think to some extent they did, nothing could change the fact that a tragedy happen. That was someones daughter IT gives something to have some answers about IT and have some kind of knowledge and and again, conclusions. Obviously, the press conference that day was, I guess, time stood still a little bit or everything else get pushed the backburner because that became the highlight.
There was obviously some shock, ryan duke having not been on the radar, the theories and possibilities that obviously weren't true, if it's right and do that really shocked everybody because I was like, okay, everyone had their theory, whatever. And then, you know, auto la, field gb, I comes in and IT makes this arrest in IT just can took everyone completely by surprise in a course than there is also talk about that the media attention is not something we're used to in the low solar georgia. If they are not keeping up with IT on their own, or you know, in the news, they can always tell when something regarding the terrible and state case is occurring at the courthouse SE, because theyll be a couple of news or the media.
Evans, right, set up and in cameras outside, everything is amazing to me. I mean, I knew this was A A big story beyond irwin county, beyond osler. But when i'm going into different places to hear people that ask me about this, when I say the words osla georgia, and people ask me about you because they heard my interview previously on the product, so you get quite a fan base.
And people in far away places, you know, way up and north georgia, will I say, do you know dusty vaca? Yes, I do. He's a friend of mine.
As far as the towns reaction, probably for a lot of people, the shock of IT still brought some level of, I can't think of another word besides resolution. And I got to asked, I got to reviewed a couple times. But some people, after that press conference, I got asked the same question, and I said, this doesn't change the fact that a tragedy still occurred here.
IT just brings about some closure. And if that can help the healing process for the family and for the city of sila, then today was A, I guess I can see a good day, but at least that allowed something to happen that was positive. I'm really glad because I believe this the whole time that i've getting to know or local law enforcement and interactivity with gba agency come through, I remember saying very specifically that they never consider this a cold case.
And I think that was a testiment to their persistence and professionalism. And while something bad did happen, they reach the conclusion and figured out what happened. And now responsible parties will be held accountable.
And while I didn't change the fact the bad things happen IT IT gives us, I guess, a Better sense of comfort about our city, certainly, and about the the guys that keep us safe. I'm sure there were some people that were starting to lose faith that there would be, and that's just natural as human. So while they were persistent and keep go, and so to have that faith restore a little bit that okay, if we keep at this sometimes is gona shake loose and IT 点。

following the press conference, I got a flood of information from people who all the sudden had all this information on ryan, duke and this other guy. But dukes, at that time, bodies had not been announced. Remember being in the ocean star with dusty Donald? And you were there for a brief second.
And I was kind of asking out loud, should I mention both duc's name, or should I sensor IT? And you canna talk to me a little bit and gave me some good advice and basically said that, why would I jeopardize the integrity of what i've done so far? The whole body of work off of one hunch is IT worth IT to do that.
Do you remember that conversation? Ah yeah actually, what do you think about that? Now that is kind of came for circle. And hey, we were actually the right.
I would give you the exact same of advice, even knowing that the outcome is different because at the time IT wasn't, I remember my thought process and talking you about that. I guess my fear for my city, just after the press conference, was the one of the very positive things that happen with having some kind of resolutions, some answers here is now I, who had been a faceless perpetrator, now had a name in a face.
And so theories about people, I mean, some of which you got into in your podcast, there's there's names of of people that are in osler were either maybe they were suspects with law enforcement or maybe they were just suspects in public opinion. Those people, very clearly that they were the help point of the press governance, were innocent. And so the positive thing about the press conference was that was resolved.
And people who you know, again, mostly in the court of public opinion, not an actual laender cement circles, they'd been suspected. Well, they can no longer be suspected. My fear was okay. Now, this story, and even in your podcast, IT took a sharp turn in a direction that nobody expected. And I was worried that was just gone to stir up a whole new set of rumors and suspicions.
And if if all we did was change the names of the people we suspected with scant evidence, that we would just be doing the same thing and we wouldn't have learned our our lesson to be careful about, because in any town, you know, people love to characteristic and small towns, but you go to any community and they're people who really enjoy gossip, right? And just, you know, take a little bit of fact and extrapolate IT out as something that may not be true at all. Just play in telephone actly.
So my fear was, here's a bunch of rumors about this person that may or may not be connected. But until you actually have a connection, you start publishing that stuff. Know if you put that on your podcast.
If dusty puts on his bag, then we may be doing the same thing just to a super group of people. And so that was my fear. So i'm really glad that you held off on that.
And then of course, later when those things did have a little more substantial evidence improve and there was some connection taken. And at that point, you're just reporting fact you didn't have anything gained by taking the long shot and throwing someone's name out that they have nothing to do with IT. You would have been able to move on with the podcast, just changed the names.
You've just put that person's name out there to a million people and didn't go back and cleared up, but that's why i'm glad you were more careful with that. You certainly could have put some stuff out there before because I bet you've heard other names besides his and that microphones got a lot of power at there in your hand. So asked people would be careful with that, a fear as I watch out for my city if this is the only thing people know about a sala and you hope we can show on the other side and appreciate you have done that on on a couple podcast. Just try to point out some of the here's just a Normal community where this bad thing happened.
What resolution are we looking for this point? Know what is the next step in a resolution for this community, obviously.
to hold guilty parties accountable. And that's not just our city. That's what people want in general, is people be held accountable for what they've done. And i'm sure this is a as far as the information in the story, I think what people would like is the play by play of exactly what happened because the information we have is from the warrants. And I bet you industry assy of study those and critique the wording and things like that is .
not much to study, far.
far more than I have. Yeah, what we want as human beings is to get all the details that go, oh, so that's what happened. And then once you know, there's this ability to move on, or I guess in some cases, that really would be to satisfy A A curiosity, wow, this is a Terry thing that happen.
How could IT happen? What was the play by play? I don't know if. And win will give that.
Is that the next step?
I think that's what a lot of people want. I think that maybe a long time before that level of detail comes out, if ever you know there's only there's one person on trial and he just pleaded not guilty. And I don't know that the background behind the scenes reasons and what's going on back there.
So like I said, I think that's what people desire. I don't know to what degree that will happen, but for now, it's they found the guilty party and it's about holding that person accountable. IT is an ongoing thing, but IT does not define us.
And that's that's the thing you and I i've talked about us for us. You've got a million listeners right now. And the only thing they know about to siller is this is where terrible ants that disappeared.
And now we have a few more answers. S that you started a podcast, and if that's all they know, that their whole impression of a sylt, then they're missed. And a huge, huge part of IT, you know, would love for you to come down the last atlay october to the Georgeous sweet potato festival we've held here since the early sixties.
We just celebrated the second annual printer music fest, dave preter from the hit doo samon and dave, who's in the rocket and role, R. B. Hall of fame and the georgia music of fame.
He grew up here. Two years ago, we had a dave prater day hering him. There's a science ge. You come in to tom, say, and welcome to still a home of dave.
Preter had such a good time with that and was such a community building event we tried to Carry IT on. So now there's preter music first, which you can find out more information at W W W up printer music first top com. And the proceeds from the event.
From the last two years, we were able to put together a scholarship fun. There was a scholarship committee, e and we awarded three graduating seniors from our own county high school who are looking to go into a career music, a scholarship. This is something we hope to do for decades to come.
So we had a bank wet, we had a worship service. And then he was actually just last friday night, we had high school course, the high school jazz ban and a live ban play. We blocked off part of the street.
Everybody had a good time. That's so sylum. This ends up being what we're known for, but there so much more to us.
So I guess that's just like I talk about the last time we said, is, is we are a community of good people. Our small city may be a little different culture than some big cities. And that's okay.
We're not for everybody. Big cities are of everybody either. So I guess that's what I want to make sure people take away, is there's a lot more to us than this. But again, i'll just go back to i'm sure there are people in other places that may have actually give IT up on something like this after twelve years, and we didn't.
I called up marries gowen to get an update on his reaction. One thing i've learned about marries throughout this podcast is that this case has deeply affected him. He lives in breathe. This case, I asked him how he felt when he heard the news, and this current state of mind.
even though we knew the answer, was that terror had possibly suffered horrendously and was they are murdered. They were fear that I had sad because the truth was horrified as we had imagined, and that I suspected all along because of the clues left in her home. An empty is that we could not rewind the clock to happy or days in a siller before terror went with.
From the beginning of a decade ago, a new terror have been murdered because of the signs of struggle in her a bedroom. I said by then that there was at least two people involved, and I was correct. So when I was also examined in her house and her personal belongings, I began to develop an emotional connection with her through my crime scene experience and training.
Even tiny clues, such as a necklace clasp found in the foreboding ds, gave me a picture of this woman, the Young woman and the net mayor. They visited her the out to overnight. And I, despite wanted to find closure for her family and peace and justice for terror, as this case became more personal.
The difficult is in trying to solve IT affect at me personally, every day for all these years, I have lived this case with emotional roller coaster that I experience ed about chasing hundreds of leads, many, often dead ends. I endure death threats being stopped by someone obsessed with the case and fatten cancer while trying to find justice for terror. Back in April of two thousand six, upon returning to north care elana from a salem, have a set at my desk one early morning working on the case.
And I received a call about one forty A M. The person on other, and said, you Better back off or your day. And I took IT this as a threat.
And the next day I contacted the gbr agent, gera rothwell, on who told me the fellow report with my local search department here, which I did in, and then I gave him written permission to pull my homework. One records he did and he just is, showed the phone call. But IT was unknown.
There was no number, so they couldn't do anything. And the end, during one of my weeks that I was in a staying at a siller, I was staying at the river bean blue grass park just outside of a sila. And I will stay in in a daughter gates's and and need is R V.
That they allowed me to use. And I was about three A M. One morning when I was a walken about this roar and sound and lights shine IT through of the back of the cartoons.
And so I pull back the curtains a little bit, and I saw this big truck seat on top of the hill with the head light shine right through the window onto the bay. Grab a lion at ah and he stated about three four minutes or in the engine. I don't think that this really had anything to do with or connection to bow or dukes or iran.
I think IT was people or someone from the area from mozilla who just didn't want A A stranger poke in its nose around. In this case. IT also now appears to be that there was a number of people that knew hood meriti a for all these years and never came forward with this information. IT has become evident to me that a number of of people in a silan knew new about the matter for years, and as order, like the town, played a huge part in cover up the crime. If this is true, this is disturbing and this is just sad.
