She has served as the Afghanistan bureau chief for both Agence France-Presse (AFP) and The Associated Press between 2009 and 2017. O'Donnell holds a Master's degree in War Studies from King's College London and is a columnist for Foreign Policy. Her work has been featured in various prestigious publications worldwide. In 2007, she authored "High Tea in Mosul: The True Story of Two English women in War-Torn Iraq," which explores the lives of two Englishwomen in Iraq during the war. In 2022, during a reporting trip to Afghanistan, O'Donnell was detained and threatened by the Taliban, an experience she has publicly discussed to highlight press freedom issues in the region.
