I am unashamed. What about you? Welcome back to Unashamed. We've been hanging out in John 6 here for a while, Jason. No, here's my description of what's happened the last few podcasts. We've been in a field spinning the wheels because the field was muddy.
And we were trying to, remember that? That was a Duck Dynasty episode. We're just trying to make it more muddy. Is that what we're doing? It was my favorite scene of all Duck Dynasty episodes.
Jace's, there's the headline for this show, Jace's favorite scene in the history of Duck Dynasty. Boy, that's a lot of scenes. My favorite scene, and I don't mean how it came across on TV, because this is... You're talking about you doing it. Well, just... You enjoyed filming this more than anything else that you did. Yeah, because we were having some volatility with the production crew and what to do, and
They were following us, and we were doing some episode, and Willie had this, you know, he has all his toys, and he thought this truck he had was unstickable, which in the redneck world, is that a word? Unstickable. Yeah. Well, it is in the redneck world. That means this thing will go through any mud, and we have gumbo. But Willie was getting frustrated.
Because the TV people were being difficult. And he just decided, because he knew the guy that owned his field. We were driving around the interstate. They were doing what they call, what do they call those things, Al? When they're just, they're giving you like, they're giving you like segue shots where like you're driving on the roads or whatever. Yeah. B-roll, like the B-roll footage. Yeah, I think they call it that. And Willie just, he just, I mean, we were going crazy.
right at or over the speed limit, he just takes a right. Because all the cameras are following. They got drones and all this stuff. Yeah. He just pulls out in this field, and he was just going to do a donut out in the field because he knew the guy. So he thought he ain't going to care. He's like, you want a scene? Do this. And it just became like –
You know, like the epic scene in that episode. But, I mean, Willie just basically did it on his own. He was just tired of driving down the road. And they're like, you know, we didn't get that. He just pulls off. Well, he got stuck, which I thought was hilarious. In his unstickable truck. Yeah. I mean, that's why it was my favorite episode. Because his unstickable became a stuckable truck. Yeah. I'm like, you can't.
You know, it's just a toy that you have. And you don't, you over. Well, everything has its limits. And he didn't realize that there was a limit on what he could get into. Which made him look like an idiot, which is what I really found funny.
But it became a funny episode that really wasn't about what it was about. Willie was frustrated with it. He went and drove down the road over and over. Yeah. He drives out there. Somehow they put that together with the whole episode, and it was just like, you know, and then here I am giving commentary on it because I think I said something along the lines in my little bit. I was like...
When you're driving down the road and you see a vehicle stuck out there, that's what you call freedom.
Because it was a freedom moment for Willie. He's like, you want to say something? I'll just do this. You know, even though he thought he could conquer the mud. It is funny how in the redneck mind that that takes place. Because I had a, you may have been there to watch it, Jace, but I had a moment like that. We were in the woods. I had taken my truck. We had driven down to where we launched the boat.
on our property and I was trying to turn it around. I had my old, this is my very first truck I ever had, but it was an old truck and it was Rick Fortenberry was riding with me and he's on the passenger side, but I was trying to turn it around in the woods, which is not very, you know, it's as easy as you think. And I got hung up on, I got pinned in by a tree, a little small sapling right on the passenger door and,
And I could not get off of it. And so instead of just like stopping and getting out and us figuring out a way to get it off that tree, I just went full redneck. I would just hook, put it in reverse and floor it and then go forward. What was happening was I was trying to get the power of the truck off the tree. And all I did was just cave in my passenger door.
And there's a man sitting there, Rick, you know, our buddy who then by the end of this episode, cause I got off that tree, but it was like, Oh, I'm getting off this tree. And everybody's laughing. Cause I'm like destroying my truck. And,
And then Rick winds up sitting next to me like we're on a prom date. Like when I when finally I get off that tree, I'm like in a like a haze, like I have risen into this place in my mind getting off that tree. And he's sitting right next to me looking at me like, are you insane?
And at the moment, I was. I had lost all sanity. And so I had to go get old Toby, our mechanic, to beat it out with a sledgehammer where I tore my truck up. So I get it. Well, I mean, I think I might have said in that episode or another episode, that's why you see rednecks die in such strange ways.
Because if you challenge their manhood, they're always looking for a story. And it's like, you're like, how in the world? What would he even be doing? You know? Exactly. I had this huge argument with Missy about, we had the little man this past weekend, and
You know, she lets me take the morning shift because she just loves to sleep more than anything. And it's okay. I'm an early riser. And so I fix him bacon and all this. So I notice while I'm cooking the bacon, he's at my feet. You know, the kid's three years old.
And all of a sudden he says, look at this, you know. And I see him like bending down. And I'm like, what could he be seeing? Because Missy had cleaned the house. She always cleans the house the night before because this guy just wrecks the house. And she cleans it. When he goes to bed, she cleans it. I'm like, what could he be? We just woke up. What could he be seeing? And I look down. I peer over his shoulder. He's bent down. And I am not kidding.
He is touching the top of what I would call a tarantula. It was a spider that was big as a 50-cent piece.
And I thought, what are you doing? I mean, the last thing I would do if I saw that big a spider is reach down and touch him. He's three years old. He doesn't know that. I hate spiders. I hate spiders. So I said, what are you doing? And I kind of knocked him back and just killed the spider. And he's like, why'd you do that? Right.
And I was like, okay, look, he wasn't poisonous, but Lulu is terrified of spiders. And we don't, our first instinct, I thought there's a teaching moment that I have to tell this three-year-old, even though I thought, man, you are very brave. So I said that. I was like, your bravery for a three-year-old is awesome. I was like, but in our world, buddy,
When we see a snake or a spider, our first impulse is not to touch it because some of them are dangerous. Of course, he's looking at me like, because then I realized we're reading all these books that these yuppies came out with that have talking animals. Yeah.
You know what I mean? Everybody's a friend. Friendly spiders. Friendly animals. And I actually turned off a video that he wanted to watch. He named it, and I Googled it, and I thought, okay, it was some little creature that was an animal that's talking, you know. And he's got friends, and they're going in the woods, and like, oh, I'm scared, I'm scared. Because he likes that. But at the end, all the animals are friends, but it's like a bear thing.
A lion, a snake. I'm like, these animals aren't your friends. I was like, this is junk. Do not watch it. You need to let him get on that Instagram page. It's called Nature is Metal. I do not let any kid under the age of 18 get on any kind of social media device. This would be healthy, though. This would give them a healthy reverence for the natural world of the animal kingdom.
Because all they do is they show pictures and videos of what happens in nature when animals get together. And it is a brutal world out there. But that's what I'm saying. So I like the adventure spirit because our greatest stories are when something crazy, you know, we did something really stupid or dangerous and survived. Yeah. But, you know, it's crazy.
There is. There may be some arguments about that. But I'm kidding, by the way. Yeah, don't let your kids get on Instagram. That was a joke. So we had a teaching. It may not have landed well, but it was a joke. So I agree with what Jay said. We had a teaching moment. But Missy was more mortified in why I let the spider get into the house. I'm like, what are you talking about? I didn't let the spider get in the house. You don't call one of your –
Your sprayers, you know, the people. One of your sprayers. I'm like, well, how is this my fault? I let him in. I mean, he could have been bitten by a spider. You know, why'd you let him in? Here I am, you know, supposed to be the protector. I was like, look, we had a teaching moment. I did think it was cool. He's probably one of the few three-year-olds, you know, that when he sees a spider, like, oh, look, cool. Let me.
And what I found fascinating is that when he touched that spider, that spider stopped. It was just like, what are you doing touching me? It didn't run off. You'd think it'd run off, you know. But it's like, well, that's never happened to that spider before. And he was kind of trying to process it. And it was the last thing he processed. And I took him out.

You know, some things that happen in a story are difficult to, you know, wrap your head around. And we've been in a field spinning our wheels, which is why I told that my favorite Duck Dynasty moment. I feel like we've done that in John 6. We just were having trouble moving on.
I mean, in one of the episodes we did before, when we were just talking about John 6 and the arguments that are all here for the religious world, and every time Zach would talk, it was making my brain hurt. I mean, I was just like, ugh. So, I mean, I want to get into John 6 today and just read it and kind of give our take, and I think...
We're arguing about things we shouldn't be arguing about because they're very confusing. And so I actually heard a joke I want to share with the idea about this, whether the father draws you or whether Judas was predestined to do this horrible act so that God could work...
something good through it? Could he have repented? It's kind of the argument which I had trouble framing, Zach. I can't recall how we framed that. Is it God predestining us, or is it us choosing God's path, or is it a combination of both? How does that work? Is that how we framed it?
I think so. Yeah. So I heard a good joke on this. The joke is...
How confusing that is to talk about. All right? You got the prerequisite for the joke. Maddie said some of my jokes failed to land. No, what she said was, Jace, would this joke be better than the last one you told? That's the way she framed it. Which means the last one stopped. That's what she said. Yeah. So here's the joke. So you have a guy who believes – I hate to characterize –
you know, somebody like this, but this guy, he believes in like predestination in a way where it's just all determined on, you know, who's in and who's out and we'll leave it at there. So, uh, we'll leave it at that. So he, he dies and he, he's standing before God and he looks up and there's two lines and there's like an angel at the head of each line. And one of them has a sign says predestination and the other says,
has free choice. So he's like, huh. So he's baffled that, oh, both groups are here. But since this was the main thrust of what I believed, he got into the predestination line. So he gets in line, he gets up to the angel, and the angel says, now what are you doing in this line? He's like, well, this is the one I chose. And the angel said, well, you need to go to the other line. That's the free choice line.
So he goes over to the free choice line, and he gets up there, and the angel says, well, what are you doing here? And he said, well, the other angel told me to get here. But you need to go back to the predestination line. That is the joke. Again, I think it was the confusion. I don't know. I feel like it was an epic fail again. That's not funny to you? No.
I'm not saying it's not funny. I think the issue we're having with you, Jace, is your delivery. I thought that was hilarious. No, but just the delivery. You got to hit the last part. I can tell you what you're doing. But he's like, well, he told me to come over here. No, I think it's funny. I think it's funny. I chose this line. What was it? You don't get it? When I heard that, I laughed, and I told it pretty much the exact way I heard it.
Well, what you're doing is on your joke telling, I think we're not expecting what you say to be the punchline because your tone doesn't convey that this is the punchline. It conveys that you're just going through the story further. But the guy that was the butt of the joke –
was confused. That's why the punchline should be confusing. Did you think it was funny, Al? I thought it was funny that it wasn't funny. I laugh. It's the same reason why I used to laugh at Dad on the show because he would say things and then just be deadpan and that was funny, but it wasn't like what he's... So the point is, okay, since I laid that foundation, as we read...
I think we'll kind of address that maybe we're missing something. Maybe we're arguing from the wrong perspective. So I say, let's go through John 6.
Where did we leave off? After the walking on the water? I mean, it's been, we're spinning our wheels, so. Well, we actually left off the last time we were in this text around verse 41. But if you want to restart in verse 25 so we can get that whole context, then we can pick it up from there. Because we got down to that point about...
where he quotes Isaiah 54 and verse 45. That's where I wanted to get. Yeah, that's right. Why don't you read through 51 then? So he feeds the 5,000 with two fish and five loaves. Yep. Which is not possible unless you're God or have God's
Then he walks on the water. And he did it, Jason, knowing, because remember he said he asked Philip about buying the bread. So he did it knowing what he was going to do here. I mean, it wasn't like it was just, hey, watch this. He had a point. So then we come to 25, and they found him on the other side of the lake. We talked about that. Yep. I'll tell you the truth. You're looking for me not because you saw miraculous signs, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Yeah.
Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. Now, we didn't make a point about this next sentence. Own him, the Son of Man. God the Father has placed his seal of approval.
Now, when you hear the word seal of approval, where do you immediately go? Holy Spirit is where I go. Holy Spirit, because if you look that word up and just drop a couple of verses off the top of my head, Ephesians 1. Yep, Ephesians 4. Yeah, Ephesians 4, which is interesting because it says, do not grieve.
The Holy Spirit. I think that's 430. Which you have been sealed. That's right. Another controversial argument. Grieve is a pretty strong word. It's the same grieve word that's used in 1 Thessalonians 4. I looked it up. It says, we don't grieve like the rest of men who have no hope. So, it's just everywhere we go, it's an argument. How can you grieve the Holy Spirit? I thought we had the Holy Spirit.
So I don't want to open up another argument, but I will address that later. So Ephesians 1 says... 13. 13 says, and you were also included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, having believed you were marching in with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit. So now, so do you think in John 6, we're talking about
Going back to his baptism, when he received God's Spirit, and remember when the voice said, this is my son? Yeah, I think that's it. By the way, it's the same word for
that's used with a Roman seal that was put on the tomb. Exactly. So the idea here is it's marked. It's marked as something being official. And so that was the idea. Y'all thought I was doing this off the top of my head, but I really wasn't. Isn't it interesting that Ephesians 1 goes back to this same argument I told about the joke? It does, yeah. It's in the same vein because... And here's where you bury the lead. A lot of people...
Read Ephesians 1.13 and hang out there. And they're like, you've given the Holy Spirit as a seal. It's a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance. And so people talk about what do we inherit, which is cool. And we do inherit everything God has. That's good. So that's awesome. But the lead is something that he referenced in Ephesians 1.
chapter one in verse four, because he says, where does it say he adopted us as sons? Yeah. Verse where is first verse four, I think. Yeah. Yeah. So look in verse four, he chose us in him before the creation of the world. Now, where did he choose us in Christ? The same one who's now talking in John six saying that,
This guy, Jesus, we were chosen in him before the creation of the world.

Which is a key little word. Two letters.
Who's he talking to here? He's talking to the Jewish nation. Would you agree, Zach? In John 6? No, in Ephesians 1, 4. Yes. And you say, well, how do you know that, Jase? Because look, I'm going to do a little word game before I read the rest of 4. He says, he chose us in him.
In verse 5, he says, he predestined us to be adopted. The question is, who is us? Find another us in here. Let's see. Or we. Verse 11. And he made... Verse 12. Oh, verse 9. You skipped one out. He made known to us the mystery to put into effect. Let's see.
Verse 11, in him we were chosen. We haven't been predestined according to the plan. Verse 12. In order that we, verse 12. Now, 13 is a shift. He says, and you were also included in Christ when you heard the word of truth.
You were marked in him. You say, well, who's you? I think it's interesting that verse 11 of chapter 2 kind of defines that. He says to 11, therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called uncircumcision by those who call themselves the circumcision.
Who's that group? The Jews. Remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel. That's a Jew if you're a citizen in Israel. And foreigners to the covenants of the promise without hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ, you who were once far away have been brought near to the blood of Christ.
And here's the point I was trying to make. For he himself, verse 14, is our peace, is our peace, who has made the two one. Well, who's the two? Jew and Gentile. Jew and Gentile. Okay, I think that's important because he thought it was important. In verse 4, yeah, the last two words says, in love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ.
And how was that sealed? It was with the promised Holy Spirit indwelling people, which he's fixing to get into in more detail in John 7, the streams of living water that they were later to receive.
And ultimately, it happens in John, what is it, 20, when it says he breathed on them, think creation, new creation, and they received God's Spirit. So I thought that was interesting. So then back to John 6, verse 28. Then they asked him, well, what must we do to do the work God requires? Jesus answered, the work of God is this, to believe in the one he has sent.
which we touched on a little bit, is sounds easy. But when you start thinking of what Jesus is asking us to believe, especially for them, God became a man, he and the Father are one, and some of the things he said, like, if you want to follow me, bring your cross.
Lose yourself. That's a big point. Give up your family. Because when you get into the debates on this, I think you have to be careful. And this is like, I like to put little...
roadblocks in the way of my own debating skills and affinity to like to debate. And one of those is, okay, does this debate ultimately lead me back to the conversation about who is Christ? Another good litmus test is right here in these two verses, verse 27 and 28. If the debate is leading you to pit works against belief or faith, then
then that's probably not the direction that you need to be going because if you read the text here,
Jesus does not separate the two because he says, do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life. So the idea here is he's not saying don't work. He just said, don't work for that work. Work for this work for the food that endures to eternal life, which the son of man will give you. For on him, the father has set a seal. They said to him, what must we do to be doing the work of God?
Yeah, but then he didn't really answer the question. Well, he does say that the work of God. Well, but he says the work of God. They said, what must we do? And he said, the work of God is to believe in the one he has sent. I think that's just fascinating. But here's where I think this has everything to do with the Holy Spirit, though, is that, and I actually think this solves this so-called dilemma, right?
If we go back to what I said in the previous podcast, that it is the Holy Spirit who reveals everything to us about who Christ is. Like, you don't discover this on your own. Now, that does not mean, in my opinion, that you can't reject the Holy Spirit. I actually think that's what Christ calls blasphemy. You can blaspheme, you can speak a word against the Son of Man and be forgiven in this age and the one to come. But if you speak a word against the Holy Spirit, if you blaspheme Christ,
the Spirit, because then you can't be forgiven. Well, why is that? Because the Holy Spirit is the agent of God who reveals truth to the believer. And if I reject the one who reveals the truth about Jesus to me, I can't be saved because I can't receive what has been revealed. So I think what's happening here is he's centering
God himself at the very central and beginning and the originator of all revelation about himself. It all comes from God. We don't discover it. We don't figure it out. God reveals it to you. And then you have a choice to say, well, yeah, I'm going to believe that. Well, I'm snickering. I'm snickering at you because I agree with everything you're saying, but I think you're participating in the argument.
I don't think so, because I think that we have to see. But you said, is it works or faith? And then you gave something that I agree with. And I'm saying, I think he was saying you might ought to look at Jesus as the Son of God. I think that was his point. It's like, I am, they don't believe God could become a human.
We get caught up in this phraseology about the illustration about the bread. Don't work for... And you're going to see this when we read Isaiah 54 and 55. So we're getting the cart before the horse here. But I'm just saying in this moment, what is the problem here? They're looking like, you know, how'd you get here? Because they can't... They were like, you weren't on the boat before...
And, of course, they don't know. He just walked on water. He's given you these. The real argument here, if there is one, is, is this son of man actually God? Is he God in human form is all I'm saying. I mean, yeah.
You follow me? Yeah. I wasn't saying I disagree with you, but I'm saying you can't help it. It's not a point. The point he's making here is not a point on any of that. The point he's making here is that Christ became flesh. Christ gave his life for the... I'm focusing on the last four words or five when it says, in the one, to believe, in the one he has sent.
which is Ephesians 1, talking about all this, he chose us from the beginning. Who? Where? In the one he has sent. I'm seeing that as common. But he is making the point, though. But he is making the point. Yeah, but they're not getting it. They're not getting it. Because the point he's making is that the Son of Man will give you the food that you need for eternal life, and then...
That's why it makes sense when you go to stand here and start talking about Jesus being the bread of life. I am the food. But at the end, they don't get it. Yeah. That's my point. You're just like, well, here's what they're getting. No, they didn't get it. That one-on-group wants to kill him and the rest of them are wanting to leave him.
Where he literally asked another question, which is going to be on the list. He's like, you don't want to leave too, do you? But to Zach's point, they do get it after he leaves. They get it after he leaves. Which is when the Holy Spirit is poured out on them. What I'm saying, let's just stop before we get into the faith versus works and just let's all agree that he's saying, look, I'm the one he sent.
Right. Yeah. And but but if you think about the flow of the gospel of John and we are getting ahead of ourselves here, but I just bring up the part about the Holy Spirit because it will it will have profound implications because you started either this podcast or previous one with how do they not see it? How do they not get it? How do they not like all that all the stuff is written in the Old Testament? How do they miss it? Well, if you go back and read.
story on the road to Emmaus, like they couldn't see it until he said, here, let me open your eyes. That's true. You made that point last time. But what I'm saying is in this verse, he literally goes back to the verses.

In Isaiah 54 and 55, he literally goes back to them and uses the phraseology, which is not familiar to us. But once you read it, you're like, oh, well, they should have known. This is exactly what Isaiah 54 and 55 says. I mean,
To the word. Should we go back? Yeah, but you can't understand it. Like they understood it looking back because then they had to, later on they'll have received revelation from the spirit. So when Jesus goes into John's gospel later on, he says that,
When he says, I got to leave, but I have to go because if I don't go, then he's not going to come. And trust me, you want him here because he's the one that's going to tell you about everything I said, and he's going to guide you into all truth. So you see the flow. It's like a seamless flow of God revealing to us how...
Christ or how God became king. I mean, that's by the way, before you, Jason, I know you're going to Isaiah 54 with Jesus quotes, but remember, you almost have to do it as a full subset. Isaiah 53 is the actual picture of the one and only son coming to earth.
Yeah. So if you're wondering whether this passage, these three chapters in Isaiah are Jesus, go back and read 53 as well just to set up what you're about to do. Well, and you can actually go all the way back to chapter 40 and read all the way to 55. And you have this kind of...
two-point system, or maybe three, God's going to bring you comfort because he's going to use Israel to produce this king. And the king's going to comfort you and welcome you. So that's basically what he said. I mean, Zach, you brought up the Luke 24. I wasn't interrupting you. I just remember you made that argument. But I'm just making the point in Luke 24 when he said that he opened their minds. Your folks know him opening their minds, but it says he opened their minds to
So that they could understand the scriptures, which when we see scriptures, we think the Bible, but they didn't have the New Testament. They sure didn't have what we're reading now. They weren't making the connections to the scriptures. He's obviously making a connection to Isaiah 54 and 55. But the reason why I bring that up, though, is because I believe that the illumination begins with the
The Holy Spirit. Well, I agree with that, but you're getting the cart before the horse. I'm saying let's just wait on that because I think that's what gets confusing.
Because we're getting the cart before the horse. He's going to bring the Holy Spirit up. He did bring it up here marked in the seal. So you're right. He said, I was marked in the seal by the seal of the Holy Spirit as the Son of God. But John 7, I just want to wait till we get to John 7 because that's when he brings up the Holy Spirit. But he says it hasn't even been poured out yet or whatever the terminology is.
I mean, do you want me to read it and then you can comment on it? Yeah, go ahead. Because I feel like you can't really understand that until you get to John. I mean, it's the way John wrote it. He's giving you a hint. Then later on, he kind of just drops a bombshell.
So I'll go ahead and read it because... What verse? Where are you starting at again? John 7. It's 38. But now if you look at your little heading there in 25, it says, Is Jesus the Christ? Which is the point I'm trying to make here. Are you in John 6 or John 7? I'm in John 7. John 7, 38. But I'm saying John 7, 25 in my Bible has a little heading that says, Is Jesus the Christ? Because it's the same...
uh vibe you know and it it it comes down to verse where is this 28 it says yes you know me and you know where i'm from i am not here on my own which is the same as john 6 and john 5 but he who sent me is true it's the same wording all right so we go on down and get to uh 38
Well, I want to back up to 37. Because the Greeks show up, which is what causes this. This is what I was trying to focus in on. The Jews, in verse 35 of John 7, said to one another, where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Because he had just said, you will look for me, but you will not find me. And where I am, you cannot come. Because he was talking about, fast forward, when he...
Goes to the right hand of God. So the Jews said to one another, where's this man intend to go? Will he go where our people live scattered among the Greeks and teach the Greek? They were thinking somewhere on the planet. He was thinking not in the dimension of the planet. But then he says, what did he mean when he said, you will look for me, but you will not find me. And where I am, you cannot come.
On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, if anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. It's the same vibe. Instead of using the bread, if anybody is hungry, he's got to eat my flesh. Same vibe. John 4 with Samaritan woman. We're talking about liquid and bread. Let him come to me and drink.
Whoever believes in me as the scriptures has said. So he's going back to trying to use their understanding that they obviously missed that these Old Testament scriptures pointed to him. It says the scriptures has said streams of living water will flow from within him. Well, what in the world does that mean? Well, John tells you what it means.
John interrupts the book and says, okay, by this he meant the spirit whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time, the spirit had not been given since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
I just think that that's a crazy, crazy passage. And it must be John felt like you need to put this in order. That's why I was interrupting. I was like, well, don't go ahead and talk about the Spirit because he's fixed to address that. And that's why they couldn't get it because they didn't have the Holy Spirit. But that was coming later. You see? Yeah. Okay. So I think we covered that. So we're going to get to that. So where do we leave off in John 6? Verse 10.
29. Yeah, so my only point of doing that was we're so tempted to go to the Holy Spirit here, but he's like, just hang on. Because he's trying to go back to the Scriptures and kind of play their game and say, you're basing the fact that I'm not the Son of God because you've read the Bible and said, well, God can't become a man. What, are you crazy? Yeah.
And he's like, no, there's some scriptures back there that's talking about me. Well, I think it helps us kind of solve the puzzle if we get into the perspective that Jesus was in in the moment trying to use the verses to show and the miracles and the signs. Hey, this was about me, these verses. Like, what? What? Okay. So where do we leave off? Well, 32 or 30.
When he tells him, he brings up about the manna. Yeah, he brings up the manna. So they asked what he said. This is right after he said, believe in the one he has sent. So they asked him, what miraculous sign will you give that we may see and believe you? What will you do? Our forefathers ate the manna in the desert as it is written. See, it's a biblical argument here. That's what they're having. Jesus is arguing one thing and they're arguing another.
He gave them bread from heaven to eat. And by the way, the argument is, is it about Jesus or not? Jesus said to him, I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. Key phrase there, without talking about anything else, is when he said, my Father. It's like, my Father. It's my Father was the one who gave me the bread. It's like, your Father? You're just a man from heaven.
Where are you from? Galilee? Nazareth? And they're going to say that later in verse 42. Verse 33. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. To your point, Zach, it's about something coming from heaven, not us going to. That's why if we get into faith and works argument earlier, we're missing the whole point here of what's happening here.
All right. Verse 34. So they said from now on, give us this bread. We want the bread that's from heaven to provide.

You got to go back to verse 27 to understand that too. Like he says, the Son of Man will give this to you. I'm trying to give it to you is what he's saying. Yeah, but now they're saying, well, give it to us. He's like, yeah, that's what I'm trying to do. You have to listen to me. Exactly. So 35, then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life. I mean, just flat out, you want to know what the illustration was all about? It's that I am the bread of life.
That's why I've made it out of thin air. Same thing at the woman at the well. It's the same conversation. He just keeps having it over and over again. And he is telling them, you're looking at the very, like you're looking at the bread you should be eating right here in front of you. It's meat. And he actually calls it real coming up. He's like, the bread, the one you wanted to go buy in the market and feed the pig, that's not even real.
He's actually doing something so crazy. They're like, that bread is not real. This bread, speaking of himself, is real. Watch how he does this. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. But as I told you, you have seen me and still do not believe. All that the Father gives me will come to me.
And whoever comes to me, I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my will, but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall
shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. Isn't that good news? In the midst of all this, trying to figure all this out, is that not the greatest news you've ever heard? For my Father, our Creator God, His will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. At this, the Jews began to grumble.
It was the greatest line that you could ever conceive. And at that, they grumbled about him because he said, I am the bread that comes down from heaven. They said, is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, I came down from heaven? Stop grumbling among yourselves, Jesus answered. No one can come to me unless the father has sent me, draws him.
And I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, they will all be taught by God. That's Isaiah 54. And we'll go and read it. But I want to read the last of this section. Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God himself.
Only he has seen the Father. I tell you the truth, he who believes has eternal life, everlasting life. I mean, how many times has he got to say that? I am the bread of life. He says it again. Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.
This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. Therefore, the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves. How can this man give us his flesh to eat? Jesus said, I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
It's about life. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is real food. That's what's crazy. And my blood is real. This is real. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me, I live because of the Father. So the one who feeds on me,
will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever. I mean, he basically says the same thing over and over and over. He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. On hearing this, I think 60 is fascinating. Many of his disciples said, this is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?
Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said, does this offend you? What if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before? He does this again. He starts talking about when he leaves. Then verse 63, because we know what happens when Jesus leaves. What happens? The Spirit is poured out. The Spirit gives life. The flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are Spirit, and they are life.
Yet there are some of you who do not believe. For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe him and who would betray him. He went on to say, This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has given him. From this time, many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. What is happening? You do not want to leave too, do you? Jesus asked the twelve disciples.
Peter wisely said, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God, which is basically at this point the only prerequisite for you to move on, which I think was the whole point. Then Jesus replied, Have I not chosen you, the twelve, yet one of you is a devil? He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who...
Though one of the 12 was later betrayed. We're going to have to lead with that on the next one. But we can frame this whole argument before we get there, because what you're seeing is it's almost like these current Jews, these current Jews that Jesus is dealing with in the first century, they're
are doing the exact same thing that was done way back in the wilderness, right? I mean, first they grumble, then they argue, then ultimately they don't really believe in God, in this case in Jesus, who he is, who he says he is. So he's giving you almost this replay of everything that's already played out that was really even way back then pointing towards who Jesus is. And now he's like, and I'm here now, and you still don't believe.
Which is fascinating because every time you see these disciples, he's talking about this is that larger group. Because remember, there's now thousands of people that are following him around. And they would consider themselves to be disciples of Jesus, just like one time they were disciples of John the Baptist. But they really don't believe him. And that's why it boils back down to the 12. And one of the 12, Peter, steps up and articulates for the rest of them exactly what they do believe.
And then he brings in the point about Judas, which is fascinating because we know even among the 12, there's one who doesn't believe as well. And ultimately, he's going to make a decision for that. So, I mean, that sort of frames the setup, I think, to when we go back to Isaiah, when he talks about what was taught. And we'll have to get into that on the next podcast. Which is a sobering thought because when you think about people who are close to Jesus, I'm talking about in our world.
Man, how could you be any closer than Judas? Yeah. And miss it. Right there. Every conversation. That's why I think it's important to frame this chapter around your narrative versus God's narrative. Yeah. Look, people get it wrong. They miss it. And that's why churches in the name of Jesus has done a lot of damage in our world. But it's also the ones that truly have the Holy Spirit and have surrendered to Jesus...
I believe, reflect the presence of God on earth. I believe heaven comes down.
to earth through spirit-filled people. Which, like I said before, which is why the spirit and the resurrection are the heart of this discussion.
