Burned out rubble. I'm Lisa LaSara, Fox News. Families who lost their homes in the Los Angeles wildfires now getting their first look at the damage and seeing if there's anything they can save. As President Biden says, the federal response will last far longer than his time in office. Progress is being made to contain deadly wildfires in L.A., President Biden was told in a briefing with California and federal officials. We're not leaving. We're not leaving until we get it done.
With just 10 days remaining in office, President Biden concedes much of the federal government's role will be the responsibility of the incoming Trump administration. My hope is that they will have at least acknowledged we have some significant experience in this. We've done really well on it. I'm praying that they continue to focus.
The president also says it's likely Congress will need to approve additional disaster relief, but says he does not yet have a cost estimate. Fox's Jared Halpern at the White House. The president warned gas prices could go up as a result of new sanctions against Russian energy companies. It is probable that gas prices could increase as much as three, four cents a gallon.
But it's going to have a more profound impact on Russia's ability to continue to act in the way it's acting in the conduct of war. The sanctions were put in place because global oil supplies and the U.S. economy are in better shape than earlier in the Russia-Ukraine war. In a call with Ukraine's President Zelensky, the White House says the president underscored the importance of continuing to support Ukraine.
President-elect Trump maintaining his innocence before his sentencing in his New York hush money case, again calling it a political witch hunt. I just want to say I think it's an embarrassment to New York. Judge Juan Merchan sentenced Trump to unconditional discharge. The move formally makes Trump a convicted felon, but it allows him to return to the White House without the threat of jail time. Trump's lawyer says that they will appeal. A major piece of firefighting equipment is grounded. There are two Canadian super scooper aircraft helping out on the Los Angeles wildfires and one is now out of service after a drone left a football-sized hole in one of the wings.
The disruption to firefighting efforts is considered a federal crime. Each super scooper can carry more than 1,500 gallons of water at a time. Fox's Jessica Rosenthal, Los Angeles Sheriff Robert Lunas has a curfew on all mandatory evacuation zones. We'll start again at 6 p.m. tonight for houses left standing. The curfew put in place last night after several people were arrested for looting in the burned areas.
Hiring picked up unexpectedly in December. The Labor Department reports employers added 256,000 jobs from 212,000 in November. The unemployment rate dropped to 4.1% from 4.2% in November.
After a deadly shooting at a high school, a school district in Georgia will improve security. A unanimous decision by the Barrow County Board of Ed to prioritize safety. An open gate system, metal detection with a maximum price of $700,000 to be utilized.
