A deadline approaching. I'm Paul Stevens. Fox News. Six days until a government spending authority runs out. House Republicans unveiling a spending bill, 99 pages, trying to avoid a government shutdown. Democrats already gearing up for a no vote. The GOP bill would keep the government funded through the end of September. It boosts defense spending by about $6 billion, but it also cuts non-defense spending by about $13 billion.
The legislation includes the largest pay increase for junior listed service members in more than 40 years as well. Democrats, though, have previously insisted that defense and non-defense spending move in the same direction. House Democratic leadership saying the partisan House Republican funding bill recklessly cuts health care, nutritional assistance and twenty three billion dollars in veterans benefits.

The Vatican saying Pope Francis had a peaceful night showing slight improvement in his recovery from double pneumonia. Massive clouds of smoke covering parts of New York's Long Island is wind-fueled wildfires.

It's also been generally pretty dry across parts of the Northeast. Most of those fires, things looking in better conditions, and winds are going to settle down a lot today. At least 80% of the fires now contained, officials say, after they grew to more than two miles long and two and a half miles wide. America's listening to Fox News.

A New Jersey police detective's family in mourning after he was shot and killed Friday. Police charging a 14-year-old with his murder. A second officer still hospitalized and fighting for his life. Fox's Chanley Painter with details. This tragedy has left the family of Detective Joseph Eskana shocked and heartbroken. His mother, Martha, telling the New York Post this, quote,
That was my baby. He always said he wanted to be a cop when he was little, and when he grew up, he took the test. Vargas and other family members were at her 26-year-old son's bedside when he died in the early hours of Saturday morning. Detective Eskana was a five-year veteran of the Newark Police Department. On Friday evening, he and his partner were reportedly investigating the possibility a group of individuals
individuals near McDonald's in Newark had illegal guns. That's when a barrage of bullets rang out. Detective Ascano was shot before he even had a chance to get out of his vehicle.
And police say the 14-year-old suspect was in possession of an automatic weapon that's believed to be the murder weapon. He was also shot during the gunfire and is recovering at a hospital. The Justice Department reportedly investigating major egg producers. This as prices continue to soar. The report says investigators are looking into whether companies are sharing supply and pricing info that could be connected to price hikes.
The latest monthly consumer price index showing the average price of a dozen grade A eggs in the U.S. hit a record high of $4.95 in January. One U.S. city now seeing a major boost in the housing market as thousands of Americans are flocking to Chattanooga, Tennessee, in part because of its
tax-friendly policies. According to realtors, over 10,000 home sales closed in that area last year. Experts say Chattanooga's warm weather climate, low cost of living, and proximity to big cities are all contributing to the rise in folks moving there. I'm Paul Stevens. This is Fox News.
