A report argues for a new way to define obesity. Obesity should not be defined solely by BMI or body mass index, which is a calculation of height and weight. That's according to nearly 60 global experts who contributed to a newly published report in the Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology Journal. The report argues obesity should be defined as BMI combined with other factors like waist circumference as well as health problems that might be linked to a few extra pounds.
Obesity is estimated to affect one billion people around the world. Under the new suggested criteria, 20% of those who used to be classified as obese would no longer meet the definition.
