The last time the two chambers of Congress met to perform this task was in 2021, the day in which a mob infamously entered the Capitol and interrupted the proceedings.
Capitol Police say they're prepared this year with increased security measures both at the U.S. Capitol complex and elsewhere around Washington. President Biden is headed to New Orleans this afternoon. He'll meet with some of the family members of the 14 people killed in the New Year's terror attack.
The president throwing a wrench into President-elect Trump's plans to drill for more domestic fossil fuel, issuing an executive order to ban offshore drilling in 625 million acres of federal waters. President Biden says his decision reflects what coastal communities, businesses and beachgoers have long known, that drilling could cause irreversible damage to places held dear.
The move also could limit expanding drilling by the incoming Trump administration. Unwinding the order would require an act of Congress. Fox's Jared Halperin, incoming White House Press Secretary Carolyn Leavitt calls it retribution. This decision, the intent behind it, is to exact, intact political revenge on the American people and on President Trump. Wall Street, the Dow is up 158 points. Nasdaq ahead 266. Attorneys asking a New York State Appeals Court to stop Judge Juan Merchan from passing sentence this Friday on President-elect Trump for his business records conviction. New York Republican Congressman Mike Lawler says this is a case that never should have been. In the case of Alvin Bragg, he took what it would have amounted to at worst.
a violation of the FEC and turned it from a federal case into a state case and from a misdemeanor into a felony. The verdict is under appeal. Mr. Trump's attorneys say that should automatically pause the sentencing. Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel are filing a federal lawsuit challenging the Biden administration's decision to block their proposed $15 billion deal for Nippon to acquire Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel.
The companies in a separate lawsuit claim the CEO of rival Cleveland Cliffs, along with the head of the United Steelworkers Union, worked together to scuttle the deal.
