Republicans in a state that already requires an ID to vote are hoping to send a constitutional amendment on it to voters. Wisconsin Republicans in the state Senate have already passed a law that would enshrine a voter photo ID law in the state's constitution. The state's Republican Assembly is expected to approve it as well. The deadline for lawmakers to vote on this so the law can be placed before voters on the April ballot is January 21st.
Republicans say the goal is to make it harder for Democrats to overturn voter ID in the state in the future. Also in April, there will be a vote that could tip the balance of the Supreme Court in a more liberal direction.
