Deaths rise, winds increase. I'm Deborah Valentine, Fox News. The California wildfires are causing a severe safety risk for both emergency responders and people living in those areas. The death toll now stands at 16, according to the L.A. coroner's office. Here's Fox's John Scott. Fire crews are bracing for more strong winds as they race to contain those deadly, out-of-control wildfires in Los Angeles. At least four major fires are still burning across the region.
Officials warn gusting winds could start new fires and threaten the progress they've made. So far, officials say the fires have burned more than 30,000 acres of land and have destroyed more than 12,000 homes and buildings. More than 100,000 residents remain under evacuation orders. The U.S. Department of Defense is assisting firefighters with infrared imaging for perimeter maps.
California's Governor Gavin Newsom deployed the California National Guard troops for support as well. The special counsel who launched two cases against President-elect Donald Trump has resigned, as anticipated, from the Department of Justice. Fox's Eric Schauner reports. Smith announced his exit in a court filing that was made public. But you know, the move is not a surprise. Smith was expected to leave the department by January 20th when President-elect Trump takes office.
It is, though, still unclear at this hour when the first volume of Smith's report on the January 6th attack will be released. Volume two on the Florida documents case, we're told that will not be released because that is still an active prosecution. Jack Smith brought two criminal cases against the president-elect, one for attempting to subvert the 2020 election results and the other for mishandling classified documents. Both were dropped after Trump's election victory.
Officials say the flight data and cockpit voice recorders of that Boeing jetliner that crashed December 29th in South Korea stopped recording about four minutes before the crash. President-elect Donald Trump criticizing California's Governor Gavin Newsom's response to the ongoing wildfires in the Los Angeles area. Fox's Alexis McAdams has that and more from West Palm Beach, Florida. Trump now announcing six more names of people who are being added to his administration. This comes, too, as he continues to blame what happened in California with those raging wildfires on Governor Gavin Newsom. This is a true tragedy, and it's a mistake of the governor himself.
and you could say the administration.
So Governor Newsom invited Trump out to California to see the devastation for himself, saying they should really put politics aside during this tragedy as people lost everything. This comes as House Republicans from blue states like New York, New Jersey and California are expected to meet with Trump this weekend as he says he wants his entire agenda to be on one big bill. The president-elect primarily wants that bill to focus on his border security agenda.
The Senate advances a bill, the Lake and Riley Act, designed to deport criminal illegal migrants. Fox's Jeff Manasso reports. The Lake and Riley Act, named for a 22-year-old Georgia nursing student who was murdered by a now convicted illegal immigrant, passed through the House and advanced in the Senate, teeing up a final vote, despite opposition from some Democrats, while others support it, like Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman. If you're here, uh,
illegally and you're committing crimes and those things. I don't know why anybody thinks that it's controversial that they all need to go. The Lake and Riley Act would require ICE to arrest criminal illegals and detain them until they're deported and allow states to sue members of the federal government who fail to enforce immigration laws.
