A once powerful senator has reported to prison to begin serving an 11-year bribery and corruption sentence. Former New Jersey Democratic Senator Bob Menendez has reported to Skullkill Prison in Pennsylvania, home to a medium and minimum security prison. Menendez, who was once the chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was convicted of helping the country of Egypt get access to U.S. military aid and of helping some New Jersey business owners avoid criminal investigation, as well as doing other favors for them.
Investigators found hundreds of thousands of dollars of cash stuffed into clothing and shoes in his closet, as well as gold bars given to him by the business owners he helped.
Menendez has maintained his innocence and said he hopes President Trump cleans up the judicial system, calling it corrupt. A new survey looks at what it takes to be considered middle class. If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. It's pretty much true of New York, where to be considered middle class will take an income of $54,000 to $164,000. The website GoBankingRates calculated every state found Connecticut and New Jersey even more expensive, $64,000 to $194,000 to be middle class.
The definition is making two-thirds to double the median income. Almost as expensive in Hawaii, Maryland, and Massachusetts. You could live better in South Dakota, Montana, and Tennessee.
