Tens of thousands forced from their homes. I'm Lee Sillisera, Fox News. Another wildfire in Southern California has exploded in size. It just broke out this morning. Cal Fire revealing the Hughes Fire near Santa Clarita is more than 5,000 acres just hours after igniting with 0% containment.
The fire in the Angeles National Forest near the 5 Freeway, roughly 40 miles north of downtown L.A., sparking evacuation orders. California Highway Patrol noting a number of roads and several northbound off-ramps of the 5 Freeway have been shut down because of heavy smoke.
California Governor Gavin Newsom says state resources have been deployed to the Hughes Fire to assist in the federal response, adding we will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide the federal government with whatever it needs to extinguish this fire. Fox's Kristen Goodwin, the National Weather Service, says gusty winds are expected to last through tomorrow and it could rain this weekend. Red flag warnings are in effect in L.A. and Ventura counties, and fire crews are concerned that the Palisades and Eden fires could break their containment lines.
At least eight people have died as the Deep South gets hit with a once-in-a-generation winter storm. Ten inches of snow has fallen in New Orleans. Houthi rebels say a captured cargo transports crew has been released after being held for more than a year. The 25 crew members of the Galaxy leader were taken captive on the Red Sea in November 2023. Their release comes, according to the Houthi rebels, as a result of talks mediated by Oman. They also say the decision was meant to support the current ceasefire in Gaza.
The Bahamas-based ship was taken by force originally because of ties it had to an Israeli billionaire and was one of more than 100 commercial vessels targeted on the Red Sea. The Houthis' actions may also be to send a message to President Donald Trump, who is weighing redesignating them a terror group.
